Background The aim of this paper was to compare the effects of demography (population aging and the increasing fraction of tertiary educated) and behaviour (intra-cohort ageing and inter-cohort change) on long-term change in the fraction of daily smokers (FrS), using a counterfactual framework. Methods Using aggregated data on smoking prevalence, education and population size from Norway 1978 to 2017, the probabilities of smoking for men and women were calculated using a pseudo-panel approach. From these estimates, four counterfactual scenarios of FrS were constructed by holding the age effect, the cohort effect and the distribution of age and education constant over time. Results FrS decreased from 45 to 14% among men, and from 33 to 14% among women over the study period. Holding the age distribution constant did not have any substantial effect on FrS. Holding the distribution of education constant led to a five percentage points increase in FrS among women, but not among men. In the case of no intra-cohort ageing, FrS would have been 11/12 percentage points higher among women/men. The corresponding figures for no inter-cohort change were 13 points for women and 27 points for men. Conclusions If the age distribution had remained stable over time, FrS would have been almost identical to the current level. In contrast, if smoking behaviour had remained stable over the life course or between birth cohorts, FrS would have been substantially higher than it is today. Background: Norway has achieved a noteworthy reduction in smoking prevalence over the past forty years. In 2015, 13% of Norwegians aged 13-74 smoked daily and a further 9% smoked occasionally. One of the objectives of the Norwegian 2013-16 national strategy for tobacco control is to achieve a reduction in the daily smoking prevalence to<10% by 2016. This paper aims to estimate how long it will take for Norway to achieve the 10% smoking prevalence. Methods: A dynamic forecasting model using smoking prevalence data from national survey data on the prevalence of current, former and never smokers in the Norwegian population from 1985 to 2012 was used to estimate future smoking prevalence in the Norwegian population based on a continuation of current patterns in smoking cessation and initiation rates. Results: The result suggests that Norway's smoking prevalence among men and women will continue to decline if current trends of smoking initiation and cessation continue. Our model predicts, based on figures for 1985-2012, that the prevalence of current daily and occasional smoking among men and women will not fall below the 10% mark until 2029 for men and 2026 for women, if current trends continue. Conclusion: Smoking is likely to remain an important public health issue in Norway for many years. New strategies are needed to accelerate the decline in smoking in Norway. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Few studies have examined alcohol-related sickness absence among young employees, although young adults are known to drink quite heavily. There are substantial differences in drinking patterns between men and women, yet gender differences have rarely been the main focus in research on alcohol-related sickness absence. Thus the present paper aims to examine gender differences in the prevalence of alcohol-related sickness absence among young employees in Norway, and in the associations between drinking patterns and such absence. Further, to examine whether the prevention paradox applies to alcohol-related sickness absence among both genders. Methods: A sample of employed young adults, 49.7% male (N = 1762, mean age = 28.3; SD = 1.9), was obtained from a general population survey of Norwegians. Self-reported measures on alcohol-related sickness absence and various drinking measures were applied. Results: Men reported absence from work due to drinking almost twice as often as women. There was a statistically significant gender difference in the drinking–absence association only for one of the three alcohol measures, indicating a stronger relationship among women. The heaviest drinkers (about 6% of the sample) reported a disproportionally large share of alcohol-related sickness absence (19%), yet the vast majority of such absence was found among the moderate drinkers (81%). Conclusions: Alcohol-related sickness absence is more common among men than women. This gender difference may reflect differences in drinking habits rather than the likelihood of being absent after drinking. Background: OECD countries over the past two decades have implemented a range of labour market integration initiatives to improve the employment chances of disabled and chronically ill individuals. This article presents a systematic review and evidence synthesis on effectiveness of government interventions to influence employers’ employment practices concerning disabled and chronically ill individuals in five OECD countries. A separate paper reports on interventions to influence the behaviour of employees. Methods: Electronic and grey literature searches to identify all empirical studies reporting employment effects and/or process evaluations of government policies aimed at changing the behaviour of employers conducted between 1990 and 2008 from Canada, Denmark, Norway, Sweden and the UK. Results: Few studies provided robust evaluations of the programmes or their differential effects and selection of participants into programmes may distort the findings of even controlled studies. A population-level effect of legislation to combat discrimination by employers could not be detected. Workplace adjustments had positive impacts on employment, but low uptake. Financial incentives such as wage subsidies can work if they are sufficiently generous. Involving employers in return-to-work planning can reduce subsequent sick leave and be appreciated by employees, but this policy has not been taken up with the level of intensity that is likely to make a difference. Some interventions favour the more advantaged disabled people and those closer to the labour market. Conclusions: Future evaluations need to pay more attention to differential impact of interventions, degree of take-up, non-stigmatizing implementation and wider policy context in each country. The aim of this paper is to describe the impact of the pandemic on injuries. Data from National Injury Surveillance System of Norway and Portugal during Covid-19 period were analyzed. In Norway hospital data on injury diagnoses were collected from a national emergency preparedness register established during the pandemic. The number of injured patients per day in the period 1 January-30 June 2020 were identified. The change in patient volumes over two three-week periods before and during the lockdown by sex, age, level of care, level of urgency, type of contact and type of injury were analysed. In Portugal we described the temporal trend in 2020 of the Home and Leisure Accidents(HLA) among vulnerable groups(0- 19years, 65years+), who needed attendance in Emergency Department(ED) of the National Health Service Hospitals. In 2019 and 2020, 240 538 HLA episodes were recorded in the age groups of interest. In Norway, there was an overall reduction of 43% in injured patients during the first three weeks of lockdown. The decrease in patient contacts did not differ by sex, but was most pronounced among young people. Substantial reductions were observed for both acute and elective treatment and across all levels of care and types of contact, with the exception of indirect patient contacts. The change in patient contacts varied considerably by injury type, with the largest reduction observed for dislocations/sprains/ strains and a lower decrease for burns/corrosions/poisoning. Similar trend was observed in Portugal on home and leisure accidents episodes rate registered in children and young people up to 19 years decreased by 24,0% during the 2020 year. In groups of 10-14 years the greatest significant decrease of 35,2% was observed, followed by groups of 5-9 years with a decrease of 24,1%. In 65-74 years an increase of 13,2% was recorded, with the highest increase(19,1%) among people aged 75+. Implications for the health systems and health policy planning will be discussed. Background: In this paper, we investigate cross-sectional and prospective relationships between various socioeconomic indicators and different health behaviours among boys and girls at ages 13-21, and whether socioeconomic status (SES) is related to changes in health behaviour over time. Methods: The study is based on a 10-year, two-generation prospective cohort study of health and lifestyle factors among a sample of Norwegian adolescents and their parents. Data presented here were collected at the ages of 13 (baseline), 15, 18 and 21. Parental and adolescent reports of socioeconomic factors were assessed along with a number of health-enhancing and health-compromising behaviours, both as single behaviours and as part of health behaviour indices. Results: Relatively few significant relationships are observed between parental occupation and adolescents' reported health behaviour when the latter is analysed as single behaviours. A significant, but weak, social gradient in health-enhancing behaviour is observed when measuring health behaviour as composite indices rather than single forms of behaviour. This is apparent both when applying parental SES variables or adolescents' own educational aspirations as proxy measures of their socioeconomic status. Conclusion: Future investigations of the presence of a social gradient in adolescent health behaviour should focus on composite measures of health behaviour. Further research is needed on potential mediating mechanisms behind the SES-health behaviour relationships in youth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Information about several papers discussed during the Oslo meeting of the World Health Organization (WHO) held in Oslo, Norway on April 1-2, 2009 is presented. During the event, participants discussed and tackle health related issues including increasing official development assistance, investing in health to improve wealth, and protecting health budgets. Moreover, attendees also reviewed major issues that plagues the health communication industry in Europe.
