On the basis of recent investigations, a newly developed analytical procedure is used for constructing a wide class of localized solutions of the controlled three-dimensional (3D) Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE) that governs the dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) in the presence of a spatio-temporally varying external potential. The controlled 3D GPE is decomposed into a two-dimensional (2D) linear Schrödinger equation (called the `transverse equation’) and a one-dimensional (1D) nonlinear Schrödinger equation (called the `longitudinal equation’), constrained by a variational condition for the controlling potential. The latter corresponds to the requirement for the minimization of the control operation in the transverse plane. Then, the above class of localized solutions are constructed as the product of the solutions of the transverse and longitudinal equations. A consistency condition between the transverse and longitudinal solutions yields a relationship between the transverse and longitudinal restoring forces produced by the external trapping potential well through a `controlling parameter’ (i.e. the average, with respect to the transverse profile, of the nonlinear inter-atomic interaction term of the GPE). It is found that the longitudinal profile supports localized solutions in the form of bright, dark or grey solitons with time-dependent amplitudes, widths and centroids. The related longitudinal phase is varying in space and time with time-dependent curvature radius and wavenumber. In turn, all the above parameters (i.e. amplitudes, widths, centroids, curvature radius and wavenumbers) can be easily expressed in terms of the controlling parameter. It is also found that the transverse profile has the form of Hermite-Gauss functions (depending on the transverse coordinates), and the explicit spatio-temporal dependence of the controlling potential is self-consistently determined. On the basis of these exact 3D analytical solutions, a stability analysis is carried out, focusing our attention on the physical conditions for having collapsing or non-collapsing solutions. Two-dimensional stability of a controlled Bose-Einstein condensation state, in the form of a nonlinear Schrödinger soliton [JETP Lett. 80 535 (2004)], is studied for the condensations with both repulsive and attractive inter-atom interactions. The Gross-Pitaevski equation is solved numerically, taking initialy a controlled soliton whose “effective mass” is several times bigger than the critical value for a weak collapse in the absence of a potential well, and allowing for reasonably large errors in the experimental realization of the trapping potential required by the theory. For repulsive and sufficiently weak attractive interactions, the controlled state is shown to remain stable inside a breathing potential well, for a time that is an order of magnitude longer than the characteristic periods of the forced and eigenoscillations of the soliton. We present one-dimensional (1D) stability analysis of a recently proposed method to filter and control localized states of the Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC), based on novel trapping techniques that allow one to conceive methods to select a particular BEC shape by controlling and manipulating the external potential well in the three-dimensional (3D) Gross–Pitaevskii equation (GPE). Within the framework of this method, under suitable conditions, the GPE can be exactly decomposed into a pair of coupled equations: a transverse two-dimensional (2D) linear Schrödinger equation and a one-dimensional (1D) longitudinal nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) with, in a general case, a time-dependent nonlinear coupling coefficient. We review the general idea how to filter and control localized solutions of the GPE. Then, the 1D longitudinal NLSE is numerically solved with suitable non-ideal controlling potentials that differ from the ideal one so as to introduce relatively small errors in the designed spatial profile. It is shown that a BEC with an asymmetric initial position in the confining potential exhibits breather-like oscillations in the longitudinal direction but, nevertheless, the BEC state remains confined within the potential well for a long time. In particular, while the condensate remains essentially stable, preserving its longitudinal soliton-like shape, only a small part is lost into “radiation”. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Using the tomographic probability distribution (symplectic tomogram) describing the quantum state (instead of the wave function or density matrix) and properties of recently introduced tomographic entropy associated with the probability distribution, the new uncertainty relation for the tomographic entropy is obtained. A hydrodynamical description of coherent instabilities that take place in the longitudinal dynamics of a charged-particle coasting beam in a high-energy accelerating machine is presented. This is done within the framework of the Madelung fluid picture provided by the Thermal Wave Model. The well known coherent instability charts in the complex plane of the longitudinal coupling impedance for monochromatic beams are recovered. The results are also interpreted in terms of the deterministic approach to modulational instability analysis usually given for monochromatic large amplitude wave propagation governed by the nonlinear Schrödinger equation. The instability analysis is then extended to a non-monochromatic coasting beam with a given thermal equilibrium distribution, thought of as a statistical ensemble of monochromatic incoherent coasting beams (“white” beam). In this hydrodynamical framework, the phenomenon of Landau damping is predicted without using any kinetic equation governing the phase space evolution of the system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The nonlinear coupling between light beams and non-resonant ion density perturbations in a plasma is considered, taking into account the relativistic particle mass increase and the light beam ponderomotive force. A pair of equations comprising a nonlinear Schrödinger equation for light beams and a driven (by the light beam pressure) ion-acoustic wave response is derived. It is shown that the stationary solutions of our nonlinear equations can be represented in the form of a bright and dark/gray soliton for the one-dimensional problem. We also present numerical results which exhibit that our bright soliton solutions are stable exclusively for the values of the parameters compatible with our theory. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An investigation to deepen the connection between the family of nonlinear Schrödinger equations and the one of Korteweg-de Vries equations is carried out within the context of the Madelung's fluid picture. In particular, under suitable hypothesis for the current velocity, it is proven that the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation, whose solution is a complex wave function, can be put in correspondence with the standard Korteweg-de Vries equation, is such a way that the soliton solutions of the latter are the squared modulus of the envelope soliton solution of the former. Under suitable physical hypothesis for the current velocity, this correspondence allows us to find envelope soliton solutions of the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation, starting from the soliton solutions of the associated Korteweg-de Vries equation. In particular, in the case of constant current velocities, the solitary waves have the amplitude independent of the envelope velocity (which coincides with the constant current velocity). They are bright or dark envelope solitons and have a phase linearly depending both on space and on time coordinates. In the case of an arbitrarily large stationary-profile perturbation of the current velocity, envelope solitons are grey or dark and they relate the velocity u0 with the amplitude; in fact, they exist for a limited range of velocities and have a phase nonlinearly depending on the combined variable x-u0 s ( s being a time-like variable). This novel method in solving the nonlinear Schrödinger equation starting from the Korteweg-de Vries equation give new insights and represents an alternative key of reading of the dark/grey envelope solitons based on the fluid language.
