Previous research exploring the effects of tactile feedback in standing balance protocols may have generated results that misrepresent the modulatory capabilities of cutaneous afference on generating motor output responses. The neurosensory mechanism of textured foot orthoses to maximize the activation of cutaneous mechanoreceptors is through repetitive foot sole skin indentation. Thus, the purpose of this experimental protocol was to investigate muscular activity amplitude changes during the stance phase of gait, specifically when walking on level ground and when stepping onto a raised wedge, and while wearing textured foot orthoses compared to orthoses without texture. Twenty-one healthy young adults were fit to a standardized neutral running shoe and completed five level and wedged walking trials wearing both orthoses. Kinematic, kinetic and electromyography (EMG) data were recorded from eight lower limb muscles. The results of this study revealed EMG suppression of lower leg musculature during stance when walking in textured foot orthoses, and this was most pronounced when lower leg musculature is typically most active. Mentally visualizing objects, understanding relationships between two- or three- dimensional objects, and manipulating objects in space are some examples of visuospatial abilities. Numerous studies have shown that male participants outperform female participants in visuospatial tasks, particularly in mental rotation. One exception is solving jigsaw puzzles. Performance by seven- to eight-year-old girls was found to be superior to that of boys of the same age (Kocijan et al. 2017). No study, however, has confirmed this finding in an adult population, where sex differences are often detectable. Seventy-nine young adult participants were given four different jigsaw puzzles and the Shepard and Metzler mental rotation test (MRT) with two main goals: First, to investigate possible sex differences in jigsaw puzzle solving, and second, to explore a potential relationship between mental rotation and jigsaw puzzle solving. We hypothesized that female participants would outperform males in the jigsaw puzzles but males would outperform females in the MRT. The findings confirmed this hypothesis. Notably, the male performance in jigsaw puzzle solving was attributed to their sex and mediated by their higher MRT scores. These results yielded two key insights. First, they indicate a dissociation between these two visuospatial abilities, jigsaw puzzle solving and mental rotation; and second, female and male participants capitalize on their distinct cognitive strengths when solving visuospatial tasks., (© 2024. Foot orthoses (FO) are a commonly prescribed intervention to alter foot function during walking although their effects have been primarily studied in the extrinsic muscles of the foot. Furthermore, enhancing sensory feedback under the foot sole has been recently shown to alter extrinsic muscle activity during gait; however, the effects of FOs with enhanced sensory feedback on plantar intrinsic foot muscles (PIFMs) remain unknown. Thus, the purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of FOs with and without sensory facilitation on PIFM activity during locomotion. Forty healthy adults completed a series of gait trials in non-textured and textured FOs when walking over hard and soft flooring. Outcome measures included bilateral joint kinematics and electromyography (EMG) of four PIFMs. Results of this study highlight the distinct onset and cessations of each PIFM throughout the stance phase of gait. PIFMs remained active during mid-stance when wearing FOs and textured FOs facilitated muscle activity across the stance phase of gait. Increasing cutaneous input from foot sole skin, via the addition of texture under the foot sole, appears to alter motor-neuron pool excitation of PIFMs. Future academics are encouraged to increase our understanding on which pathologies, diseases, and/or medical conditions would best benefit from textured FOs., (© 2023. The attenuation of sensory inputs via various methods has been demonstrated to impair balance control and alter locomotor behavior during human walking; however, the effects of attenuating foot sole sensation under distinct areas of the foot sole on lower extremity motor output remains poorly understood. Thus, the purpose of this study was to attenuate cutaneous feedback via regional hypothermia under five different areas of the foot sole and investigate the resultant modulation of kinematic and muscle activity during level walking. Electromyography from eight lower leg muscles, kinematics, and location of center of pressure was recorded from 48 healthy young adults completing walking trials with normal and reduced cutaneous sensation from bilateral foot soles. The results of this study highlight the modulatory response of the tibialis anterior in terminal stance (propulsion and toe-off) and medial gastrocnemius muscle throughout the entire stance phase of gait. The topographical organization of foot sole skin in response to the attenuation of cutaneous feedback from different areas of the foot sole significantly modified locomotor activity. Furthermore, the locomotor response to cutaneous attenuation under the same regions that we previously facilitated with tactile feedback do not oppose each other, suggesting different physiological changes to foot sole skin generate unique gait behaviors., (© 2023. Sensory feedback from the foot sole plays an important role in shaping human locomotion. While net muscle activity and kinematic changes have been correlated with electrical stimulation to five topographical regions of the foot, it remains unknown if these responses are similar with tactile stimulation. The purpose of this study was to use texture in foot orthosis design, applied to five distinct regions under the foot sole, and measure joint kinematics, location of center of pressure, and muscle activity of eight lower leg muscles during level and incline walking. Fifty-five healthy adults completed 48 walking trials in textured and non-textured foot orthoses. Study results confirm that tactile stimulation is stimulation-site and gait-phase specific in modulating lower leg muscle activity during walking. For example, texture under the lateral forefoot consistently generated a suppression of EMG and texture under the lateral midfoot always generated a facilitation. In early stance, adding texture under the medial midfoot or calcaneus facilitated extensor muscle activity and suppressed flexor muscle activity. Texture under the lateral midfoot or medial forefoot facilitated tibialis posterior activation. These results support the topographical organization of cutaneous mechanoreceptors in foot sole skin while considering how texture can be used in foot orthosis design to target lower leg muscular changes during locomotion., (© 2022. Visuospatial functions are particularly vulnerable to the aging process. Decline of these processes can seriously affect an individual's functional independence and quality of life. Effectively assessing the spatial abilities of older adults is, therefore, crucial for identifying strategies to maintain cognitive functioning. The purpose of the present study was to use ecological tasks more comparable to activities of daily living to assess spatial ability in older adults. Three hands-on tasks (a visual search task, a low- and a high-mental rotation demand tasks) and a version of the well-known paper-based mental rotation of figures test (Shepard and Metzler, Science 171(3972):701-703, 1971) were given to 60-79-year-old female and male participants. The hands-on tasks required participants to locate, manipulate, and arrange real objects (i.e., toy bricks) in space. Age had a negative impact on visual search but not on mental rotation ability. Male participants outperformed females in the mental rotation tasks, but a trend for the opposite (better performance by females) was found for the visual search task. The results suggest that spatial abilities are not a monolithic construct and that sub-categories of this construct are affected by age and by sex differently. While visual search function is susceptible to decline during old age, mental rotation ability is not. In addition, unlike the paper-based test, the hands-on tasks were found to be age-appropriate with a feasible level of difficulty for all participants. Several tests of mental rotation ability have been used to investigate its development and the origins of sex differences. One of the most used tests is the mental rotation test (MRT) by Vandenberg and Kuse. A limitation of the MRT is that it is a pen-and-paper test with 2D images of 3D objects. This is a challenge to the ecological validity of the MRT because mental rotation typically involves physical 3D objects that are also physically manipulated. The purpose of the present study was to compare mental rotation ability as evaluated by the MRT to three new tasks with physical objects (toy bricks) that were physically manipulated. The different tasks allowed us to vary the processing demands on mental rotation while standardizing other aspects of the tasks. Fifty-nine females and twenty-eight males completed the LMR and HMR conditions (low- and high-mental rotation demands, respectively) of the brick building task (BBT), a visual search task, and the MRT. As demands on mental rotation for the BBT increased, performance decreased and a sex difference, with males outperforming females, increased. There were correlations between all tasks, but they were larger between the versions of the BBT with the MRT. The results suggest that spatial skill is an assembly of interrelated subskills and that the sex difference is sensitive to the demands on mental rotation and dimensionality crossing. The benefits of the BBT are that it is ecologically valid, avoids dimensionality crossing, and the demands on mental rotation can be manipulated.

Individuals constantly adapt their locomotion to navigate through complex environments. However, little known about anticipatory strategies used by children during adaptive locomotion. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of manipulating visual and somatosensory information during a multiple obstacle crossing task between children and adults. It was hypothesized that compared to young adults, children would have difficulty with anticipatory motor planning and online control during a multiple obstacle crossing task when sensory information was manipulated. Children (N = 16, [Formula: see text] = 9 ± 1.07 years) and young adults (N = 16, [Formula: see text] = 22 ± 0.96 years) walked along a 7 m pathway towards a goal while avoiding stepping on one, or two virtual obstacles placed 5 m from the start. Visual information regarding the number of obstacles was either presented at the start of steady-state locomotion, or two steps prior to the first obstacle. Each participant completed 36 trials, 18 on flat ground and 18 on foam terrain. Results indicated that in comparison to young adults, children's foot positions were significantly closer to the first obstacle when visual information about the obstacle was delayed. On flat ground, children demonstrated similar Trail foot positions relative to the first and second obstacles, suggesting children planned for the avoidance of the obstacles separately. On foam terrain, children performed similar to young adults, such that their Trail foot position relative to the first obstacle was significantly closer to the obstacle compared to their Trial foot position relative to the second obstacle. The results suggest that children plan for the avoidance of multiple obstacles differently compared to young adults. When stability is challenged, maintaining forward progression of locomotion overrides the planning of obstacle crossing, such that children perform similar to young adults. Therefore, it appears that children have difficulties with online control and anticipatory motor strategies during a multiple obstacle crossing task.

Previous research has established that the left cerebral hemisphere is dominant for the control of continuous bimanual movements. The lateralisation of motor control for discrete bimanual movements, in contrast, is underexplored. The purpose of the current study was to investigate which (if either) hemisphere is dominant for discrete bimanual movements. Twenty-one participants made bimanual reach-to-grasp movements towards pieces of candy. Participants grasped the candy to either place it in their mouths (grasp-to-eat) or in a receptacle near their mouths (grasp-to-place). Research has shown smaller maximum grip apertures (MGAs) for unimanual grasp-to-eat movements than unimanual grasp-to-place movements when controlled by the left hemisphere. In Experiment 1, participants made bimanual symmetric movements where both hands made grasp-to-eat or grasp-to-place movements. We hypothesised that a left hemisphere dominance for bimanual movements would cause smaller MGAs in both hands during bimanual grasp-to-eat movements compared to those in bimanual grasp-to-place movements. The results revealed that MGAs were indeed smaller for bimanual grasp-to-eat movements than grasp-to-place movements. This supports that the left hemisphere may be dominant for the control of bimanual symmetric movements, which agrees with studies on continuous bimanual movements. In Experiment 2, participants made bimanual asymmetric movements where one hand made a grasp-to-eat movement while the other hand made a grasp-to-place movement. The results failed to support the potential predictions of left hemisphere dominance, right hemisphere dominance, or contralateral control.

Tool-use has been found to change body representation. For example, participants who briefly used a mechanical grabber to pick up objects perceived their forearms to be longer immediately after its use (e.g., Cardinali et al., Curr Biol 19(12):R478-R479, 2009; they incorporated the tool into their perceived arm size). While some studies have investigated the long-term effects of tool-use on body representation, none of these studies have used a tool that encapsulates the entire body part (e.g., a glove). Moreover, the relationship between tool-use and the body model (the representation of the body's spatial characteristics) has yet to be explored. To test this, we recruited 19 elite baseball players (EBP) and 18 age-matched controls to participate in a hand representation task. We included EBP because of their many years (8+) of training with a tool (baseball glove). The task required participants to place their hands underneath a covered glass tabletop (no vision of their hands), and to point to where they believed 10 locations (the tips and bases of each finger) were on their hands (Coelho et al., Psychol Res 81(6):1224-1231, 2017). Each point's XY coordinates was tracked using an Optotrak camera. From these coordinates, we mapped out the participants perceived hand size. The results showed that when compared to the controls, EBP underestimated hand width and finger length of both hands. This indicates that long-term tool use produces changes in the body model for both, the trained and untrained hands. We conducted a follow-up study to examine if 15 min of glove use would change perceived hand size in control participants. Novice baseball players (participants without baseball experience: NBP) were recruited and hand maps were derived before and after 15 min of active catching with a glove. Results showed no significant differences between the pre and post hand maps. When we compared between the two experiments, the EBP showed smaller hand representation for both hand width and finger length, than the NBP. We discuss these results in relation to theories of altered body ownership.

Research has shown that the kinematic characteristics of right-hand movements change when executed during both speech production and processing. Despite the variety of prehension and manual actions used to examine this relationship, the literature has yet to examine potential movement effects using an action with a distinct kinematic signature: the hand-to-mouth (grasp-to-eat) action. In this study, participants performed grasp-to-eat and grasp-to-place actions in (a) a quiet environment and (b) while processing speech. Results during the quiet condition replicated the previous findings; consistently smaller grasp-to-eat (compared to grasp-to-place), maximum grip apertures appeared only when using the right hand. Interestingly, in the listen condition, smaller maximum grip apertures in the grasp-to-eat movement appeared in both the right and left hands, despite the fact that participants were right-handed. This paper addresses these results in relation with similar behaviour observed in children, and discusses implications for functional lateralization and neural organization.

Individuals use visual information to guide their avoidance behaviours. More specifically, individuals may directly perceive the time prior to colliding with an approaching obstacle (i.e., time to contact, TTC) to determine when to avoid. In addition, individuals use body-scaled information to control their movements. These avoidance behaviours differ when avoiding a human obstacle compared to an inanimate object. As such, the purpose of this experiment was to examine the avoidance behaviours of individuals during a head-on collision course with an approaching person. Young adults (N = 20, [Formula: see text] = 22.25 ± 1.5 years, 10 males) were instructed to walk along a 10 m path towards a goal located along the midline. A female confederate positioned along the midline walked towards the participants to one of the four predetermined final positions: (1) along the midline in the participants' starting position; (2) stopped along the midline 2.5 m from her starting position; (3) to the left of the participants' starting position; and (4) to the right of the participants' starting position. Results revealed when the path of the confederate was certain, individuals used a greater TTC to determine when to change their path in comparison with when the path of the confederate was uncertain. Males were found to avoid significantly earlier (i.e., larger TTC) than females. However, following a change in path, sex did not impact the avoidance behaviours of the groups, but rather, the environment was the regulating factor.

Adaptation to an abrupt change in the dynamics of the interaction between the arm and the physical environment has been reported as occurring more rapidly but with less retention than adaptation to a gradual change in interaction dynamics. Faster adaptation to an abrupt change in interaction dynamics appears inconsistent with kinematic error sensitivity which has been shown to be greater for small errors than large errors. However, the comparison of adaptation rates was based on incomplete adaptation. Furthermore, the metric which was used as a proxy of the changing internal state, namely the linear regression between the force disturbance and the compensatory force (the adaptation index), does not distinguish between internal state inaccuracy resulting from amplitude or temporal errors. To resolve the apparent inconsistency, we compared the evolution of the internal state during complete adaptation to an abrupt and gradual change in interaction dynamics. We found no difference in the rate at which the adaptation index increased during adaptation to a gradual compared to an abrupt change in interaction dynamics. In addition, we separately examined amplitude and temporal errors using different metrics, and found that amplitude error was reduced more rapidly under the gradual than the abrupt condition, whereas temporal error (quantified by smoothness) was reduced more rapidly under the abrupt condition. We did not find any significant change in phase lag during adaptation under either condition. Our results also demonstrate that even after adaptation is complete, online feedback correction still plays a significant role in the control of reaching.

A crew of two rowing together in perfect synchrony is an example of a task that requires each performer to maintain meticulous timing when coordinating their movements with the other. At the individual level, temporal coordination of the limbs has been observed in bimanual pointing movements even when made to targets of different distance. Timing of the arms is not independent; rather there is a natural temporal coupling. The aim of this experiment was to investigate whether the temporal characteristics of pointing movements can be observed under joint conditions. Sixteen pairs of participants made short and long, unimanual and bimanual pointing movements. In the unimanual and bimanual solo conditions, participants made the movements alone. In the joint condition, each participant contributed one arm to the joint "bimanual" movements. Absolute temporal coupling at movement initiation and termination was measured by the differences in reaction time and total response time. Relative temporal coupling at movement initiation and termination was measured by correlating reaction time and total response time of the left and right limbs. Pointing movements had synchronous movement termination in the bimanual solo conditions and asynchronous termination in the unimanual solo and bimanual joint conditions. The initiation and termination of the arms were not correlated in the unimanual solo condition (initiation r = 0.01, termination r = 0.03). Small-to-medium correlations (r = 0.19, r = 0.24) were observed in the bimanual joint condition, and they were larger than the unimanual solo condition (p = 0.022, p = 0.063). As expected, there were large correlations in the bimanual solo conditions (r = 0.91, r = 0.81). Our findings suggest that absolute temporal coupling does not occur between individuals, but there is evidence for relative temporal coupling in the bimanual joint condition.

There is a movement preparation cost for bimanual asymmetric reaching movements compared to bimanual symmetric movements. This is likely caused by the complex spatiotemporal coupling of bimanual asymmetric movements. The spatiotemporal coupling of bimanual reach-to-grasp movements has been investigated, but not the potential movement preparation costs. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the relationship between movement preparation costs and spatiotemporal coupling of reach-to-grasp movements. Twenty-four participants made unimanual, bimanual symmetric, and bimanual asymmetric reach-to-grasp movements in four-choice reaction time tasks. There was a movement preparation cost for bimanual symmetric reach-to-grasp movements compared to unimanual movements, which was not previously seen for reaching movements. Coordinating two symmetric grasps probably caused this bimanual symmetric cost, as we have previously shown that there is no bimanual symmetric cost for reaching movements. It was also surprising that the complexity of movement preparation was comparable for bimanual symmetric and asymmetric reach-to-grasp movements. However, the spatial coupling of bimanual asymmetric movements at movement initiation suggested that they were prepared as bimanual symmetric movements. Online control was then used to modify these symmetric reach-to-grasp movements into asymmetric movements. Preparing bimanual symmetric reach-to-grasp movements in advance instead of asymmetric movements likely prevented a bimanual asymmetric cost.

Reach-to-grasp movements feature the integration of a reach directed by the extrinsic (location) features of a target and a grasp directed by the intrinsic (size, shape) features of a target. The action-perception theory suggests that integration and scaling of a reach-to-grasp movement, including its trajectory and the concurrent digit shaping, are features that depend upon online action pathways of the dorsal visuomotor stream. Scaling is much less accurate for a pantomime reach-to-grasp movement, a pretend reach with the target object absent. Thus, the action-perception theory proposes that pantomime movement is mediated by perceptual pathways of the ventral visuomotor stream. A distinguishing visual feature of a real reach-to-grasp movement is gaze anchoring, in which a participant visually fixates the target throughout the reach and disengages, often by blinking or looking away/averting the head, at about the time that the target is grasped. The present study examined whether gaze anchoring is associated with pantomime reaching. The eye and hand movements of participants were recorded as they reached for a ball of one of three sizes, located on a pedestal at arms' length, or pantomimed the same reach with the ball and pedestal absent. The kinematic measures for real reach-to-grasp movements were coupled to the location and size of the target, whereas the kinematic measures for pantomime reach-to-grasp, although grossly reflecting target features, were significantly altered. Gaze anchoring was also tightly coupled to the target for real reach-to-grasp movements, but there was no systematic focus for gaze, either in relation with the virtual target, the previous location of the target, or the participant's reaching hand, for pantomime reach-to-grasp. The presence of gaze anchoring during real vs. its absence in pantomime reach-to-grasp supports the action-perception theory that real, but not pantomime, reaches are online visuomotor actions and is discussed in relation with the neural control of real and pantomime reach-to-grasp movements.

The ability to coordinate the simultaneous movements of our arms is limited by a coalition of constraints. Some of these constraints can be overcome when the task conceptualisation is improved. The present study investigated how the movement preparation of bimanual reaching movements was affected by integrated visual feedback of the responses. Previous research has shown that the preparation of bimanual asymmetric movements takes longer than bimanual symmetric movements. The goal of the present study was to determine whether integrated, Lissajous feedback could eliminate this bimanual asymmetric cost. Fifteen participants made unimanual and bimanual symmetric and asymmetric reaches with separate feedback, where there was a cursor and a target for each hand. Participants also made bimanual symmetric and asymmetric movements with integrated feedback; a single cursor and a single target represented the locations and goals of both arms in this condition. The results showed a bimanual asymmetric cost with separate feedback, and that this cost persisted with integrated feedback. We suggest that integrated feedback improved continuous and discrete bimanual movements in other experiments by facilitating error detection and correction processes. We hypothesise that the bimanual asymmetric cost persisted in the present experiment because the uncertainty associated with choice reaction time prevented the facilitated error processing from improving the preparation of the next trial.

Changing direction during walking is a common task humans encounter every day. This destabilizing event requires the central nervous system (CNS) to quickly produce an appropriate response, maintain stability, and propel the body in the intended direction. Previous research has demonstrated that 'individuals with multiple sclerosis' (IwMS) with mild balance impairment display differences in gait characteristics during clinical tests compared with controls. The current study used dynamic stability margin [DSM, difference between COM (i.e. the weighted average of the central point of an individual's total body mass) and lateral BOS (i.e. the most lateral border of the foot that is in contact with the ground)] calculations in addition to gait kinematics to determine whether dynamic stability differences during a steering task were present between IwMS with mild balance impairment and 'healthy age-matched individuals' (HAMI) as well as between IwMS with mild balance impairment and 'community-dwelling older adults' (OA). All IwMS reported mild balance impairment with expanded disability status scale scores ranging between 1.0 and 3.0. The steering task required participants to walk 3 m towards a pressure sensitive trigger mat that would illuminate one of five lights to indicate the future direction of travel (i.e. straight, 45° or 60° to the left or right of the midline). Results revealed that IwMS displayed reduced walking speed and cadence during the approach phase in addition to a smaller DSM range (i.e. COM remained close to lateral BOS) during the entire steering task when compared with HAMI. However, when compared to OAs, IwMS did not display differences in any of the gait kinematics or DSM calculations. Findings suggest that the IwMS displayed a conservative gait strategy in order to maintain stability during the steering task. Lack of dynamic stability differences between IwMS and OAs indicate that both groups use similar strategies to adapt locomotion as a result of impaired somatosensory quality and/or processing.

A major presenting symptom in 'individuals with multiple sclerosis with mild balance disability' (IwMS) is poor postural control, resulting from slowed spinal somatosensory conduction. Postural control deficits in IwMS are most apparent when vision is removed and the base of support is reduced such is the case during tandem and single support stances. The current study used center of pressure (COP) measurements to determine whether postural control differences exist between IwMS and either 'healthy age-matched individuals' (HAMI) or 'community-dwelling older adults' (OA). Postural control was evaluated using a Romberg standing task, which required participants to stand with their feet together and hands by their sides for 45 s with either their eyes open or closed. Results revealed that COP velocity root mean square was greater in IwMS and their COP position was closer to their self-selected maximum stability limits (e.g., greater Standing Index proportion) when vision was removed compared to HAMI. Conversely, IwMS displayed similar postural control characteristics to OA. The current study highlights two novel findings: (1) the utility of novel COP measurements to assess differences in the level of postural control in IwMS; and (2) the benefit of assessing postural control levels in IwMS to not only a population with a fully intact and functional postural control system (HAMI) but also to another population that is thought to experience postural control deficits (OA).

Information used to determine the action strategies necessary to successfully pass through apertures is based on the dimensions of the individual and the mover's action capabilities (Warren in J Exp Psychol 10:683-703, 1984; Warren and Whang in J Exp Psychol 13:371-383, 1987). Previous research has demonstrated that when children must pass through small spaces, they will produce a shoulder rotation at apertures 1.6 times their shoulder width and smaller (i.e., critical point) and their avoidance strategies are based more on dynamic than geometric measures (Snapp-Childs and Bingham in Exp Brain Res 198:527-533, 2009; Wilmut and Barnett in Exp Brain Res 210:185-194, 2011). The question remains as to whether similar strategies exist when children are given a choice in their obstacle avoidance strategy. The current study aimed to determine the action strategies employed by children when confronted with a non-confined obstacle avoidance task. Specifically, the study intended to identify the aperture width that elicited a change in action (e.g., a shoulder rotation or a change in travel path). Children (N = 12, mean age = 7.1 years, ±0.2) were instructed to walk along a 10-m path toward a visible goal located at the end of the pathway and avoid colliding with the two vertical obstacles placed halfway (5 m) down the path on either side of the midline. The space between the obstacles ranged between 0.6 and 1.8 times the participant's shoulder width (presented in increments of 0.2). Results revealed that when the aperture was too small for straight passage, children choose to circumvent the obstacles rather than rotate their shoulders the majority of the time. However, unlike young and older adults (Hackney and Cinelli in Gait Posture 37:93-97, 2013a, Exp Brain Res 225:419-429, 2013b), this strategy was not used consistently. Instead, changes in travel path were highly variable both across participants and within trials. This variability suggests that a true critical point cannot be established for children in this non-confined task. Variable actions at the time of crossing were significantly correlated with the medial-lateral center of mass variability during the approach to the obstacles. These results further support the idea that children's actions may be more affected by dynamic factors than geometric measures.

Young and older adults demonstrate differences in action when passing through confined spaces (Warren and Whang in J Exp Psychol Hum Percept Perform 13:371-383, 1987; Hackney and Cinelli in Gait Posture 33:733-736, 2011). However, it is unknown whether or not these differences in actions exist during non-confined multiple obstacle avoidance tasks. The current study aimed to determine: (1) the differences in actions between young and older adults when given a choice in path selection and (2) establish the variables that may account for these differences in action. Older adults (N = 12) and young adults (N = 12) walked along a 10-m path towards a goal and avoided two vertical poles placed halfway down the path on either side of the midline (ranging between 0.6 and 1.8× shoulder width). Results revealed that in non-confined space, both age groups use body-scaled information to determine the passability of apertures and maintain similar Critical Points to those reported in confined aperture crossing (1.4 for young adults and 1.6 for older adults). Variability of the medial-lateral centre of mass movement (i.e. how much the trunk moved side to side) between the groups most likely accounted for the larger aperture sizes (i.e. Critical Points) required by the older adults to pass through the apertures. Therefore, it appears that body-scaled information may include an individual's knowledge of both actual body size and body sway magnitude.

It has been proposed that the two hands play different roles during bimanual object interaction. The right hand takes on an explorative, highly precise, manipulative role while the left hand supports and stabilizes the object. Does this division of labour influence hand use during visually guided grasping? Three experiments were designed to address this question: right-handed individuals put together 3D models using big or small building blocks scattered across a tabletop. Participants were free to build the models; however, it felt comfortable (Experiment 1) or they were required to build on a large (Experiment 2) or small (Experiment 3) base plate. In Experiment 1, the right hand was preferred for grasping while the left hand stabilized the building model. When participants used the large base plate (Experiment 2), right hand use for grasping decreased and left hand use increased. The plate provided freedom to the left hand from having to stabilize the building model, but it also interfered with right/left hand movements directed towards the opposite side of the grasping hand (contralateral movements). To investigate which of these two factors would explain the change in hand use for grasping, a very small base plate was used in the last experiment. Results showed similar right hand use values to those seen in the first experiment (without the use of a plate), even though the left hand was 'released from its stabilizing duties.' The results predict a left-hemisphere right hand advantage in the control of grasping.

Eye and head rotations are normally correlated with changes in walking direction; however, it is unknown whether they play a causal role in the control of steering. The objective of the present study was to answer two questions about the role of head rotations in steering control when walking to a goal. First, are head rotations sufficient to elicit a change in walking direction? Second, are head rotations necessary to initiate a change in walking direction or guide steering to a goal? To answer these questions, participants either walked toward a goal located 7 m away or were cued to steer to the left or right by 37°. On a subset of trials, participants were either cued to voluntarily turn their heads to the left or right, or they underwent an involuntary head perturbation via a head-mounted air jet. The results showed that large voluntary head turns (35°) yielded slight path deviations (1°-2°) in the same or opposite direction as the head turn, depending on conditions, which have alternative explanations. Involuntary head rotations did not elicit path deviations despite comparable head rotation magnitudes. In addition, the walking trajectory when turning toward an eccentric goal was the same regardless of head orientation. Steering can thus be decoupled from head rotation during walking. We conclude that head rotations are neither a sufficient nor a necessary component of steering control, because they do not induce a turn and they are not required to initiate a turn or to guide the locomotor trajectory to a goal.

Neck/shoulder pain has previously been linked to repetitive work and muscle fatigue. We have shown that asymptomatic people performing repetitive upper limb tasks display signs of shoulder fatigue and of whole-body compensatory strategies. However, the role played by the proprioceptive system in the production of these compensatory strategies has not been studied. A group of asymptomatic adults (n = 18) performed a repetitive pointing task at shoulder height to fatigue. Before and after fatigue, they performed two position sense tasks, eyes closed: a single-joint task where they abducted their shoulder to the perceived horizontal and a multi-joint task, where they stood and placed their finger at the perceived location of a target in front of them at shoulder height. After fatigue, subjects made larger shoulder errors by raising their elbow higher above the horizontal (~ +1.3 cm) than before fatigue; however, their finger position accuracy was not changed, despite all subjects performing the movement in less time (~ -0.18 s) while fatigued. There were no gender differences in shoulder or finger position accuracy before or after fatigue; however, there were gender differences in the perceived finger-target location and in the temporal characteristics of the finger movement toward the target. Results suggest that healthy individuals are able to develop strategies to compensate for fatigue-induced deficits at one joint to maintain the endpoint accuracy of a multi-joint task constant. Gender differences in movement strategies and perception of endpoint location may play parts in the previously reported gender differences in work-related neck/shoulder symptoms.

Repetitive movements are common to many daily activities but often lead to the development of fatigue. We have previously shown that fatigue leads to changes in tridimensional spatial characteristics of the whole body. However, temporal aspects of these posture and movement adaptations have yet to be investigated. Healthy subjects (N = 14) performed a continuous reaching task by pointing between two targets placed at shoulder height, at 100 and 30% arm's length, anterior to the subject's midline until fatigue (assessed using the Borg CR-10 scale). Whole body kinematics and upper Trapezius EMG were recorded and analyzed at 1-min intervals to document the progression of fatigue on outcome variables. For all upper limb and postural variables analyzed, changes began to occur approximately midway to fatigue and were followed by an increase in Trapezius activity from baseline. Reach-to-reach variability of joint average positions and range of motion (ROM) increased in multiple directions for shoulder and elbow parameters. Reach-to-reach variability of the center-of-mass ROM also increased in several directions. Changes were also observed in within-movement inter-segmental timing. The peak velocities of elbow and endpoint occurred closer together in time during fatigue while the shoulder peak velocity occurrence showed a greater reach-to-reach variability. Our results suggest that the effects of fatigue on repetitive movement kinematics can be observed across three temporal dimensions of the task: (1) within individual movements, (2) from one movement to the next, and (3) as fatigue develops. Each observed change is discussed as a potential contributor to task-specific control strategies to prolong task performance.

Neck/shoulder pain is linked to movement repetition, awkward postures, and muscular fatigue. Studies have examined the influence of pain and fatigue on movement characteristics, but few report spatial and temporal characteristics within- and between-dynamic movements. The combined influences of fatigue and pain on these parameters are examined here. A shoulder-injured group (PAIN) (intensity >3/10, duration >3 consecutive months) and an age-sex-matched control group (CTRL) (n = 16 in each) performed a repetitive reaching task to voluntary termination. Kinematics, heart rate, and muscle activity were recorded. Group comparisons were made at the beginning and end of task. Both pain and fatigue changed movement parameters with CTRL subjects adapting to fatigue with increased arm movement, while the PAIN group increased center of mass (CoM) and minimized shoulder movement. Fatigue was associated with decreased arm relative variability, while pain caused increased arm and decreased CoM relative variability. Time to peak velocity tended to indicate increased joint coupling in the CTRL group only. Together, this suggests that despite initial differences in movement strategies, both groups tend to move toward more fixed movement strategies at the end of the task. Those of CTRL are more fixed temporally and spatially (in the arm), whereas the PAIN group adaptations are primarily spatial in nature and appear to focus on controlling CoM.
