One in every eight women is susceptible to breast cancer, at some point of time in her life. Early detection and effective treatment is the only rescue to reduce breast cancer mortality. Accurate classification of a breast cancer tumor is an important task in medical diagnosis. Machine learning techniques are gaining importance in medical diagnosis because of their classification capability. In this paper, we propose a new, Genetically Optimized Neural Network (GONN) algorithm, for solving classification problems. We evolve a neural network genetically to optimize its architecture (structure and weight) for classification. We introduce new crossover and mutation operators which differ from standard crossover and mutation operators to reduce the destructive nature of these operators. We use the GONN algorithm to classify breast cancer tumors as benign or malignant. To demonstrate our results, we had taken the WBCD database from UCI Machine Learning repository and compared the classification accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, confusion matrix, ROC curves and AUC under ROC curves of GONN with classical model and classical back propagation model. Our algorithm gives classification accuracy of 98.24%, 99.63% and 100% for 50–50, 60–40, 70–30 training–testing partition respectively and 100% for 10 fold cross validation. Unmanned aerial systems, especially drones have gone through remarkable improvement and expansion in recent years. Drones have been widely utilized in many applications and scenarios, due to their low price and ease of use. However, in some applications drones can pose a malicious threat. To diminish risks to public security and personal privacy, it is necessary to deploy an effective and affordable anti-drone system in sensitive areas to detect, localize, identify, and defend against intruding malicious drones. This research article presents a new publicly available radio frequency drone dataset and investigates detection and identification methodologies to detect single or multiple drones and identify a single detected drone's type. Moreover, special attention in this paper has been underlined to examine the possibility of using deep learning algorithms, particularly fully connected deep neural networks as an anti-drone solution within two different radio frequency bands. We proposed a supervised deep learning algorithm with fully-connected deep neural network models that use raw drone signals rather than features. Regarding the research results, the proposed algorithm shows a lot of potentials. The probability of detecting a single drone is 99.8%, and the probability of type identification is 96.1%. Moreover, the results of multiple drones detection demonstrate an average accuracy of 97.3%. There have not been such comprehensive publications, to this time, in the open literature that have presented and enlightened the problem of multiple drones detection in the radio frequency domain. Abstract: Feature selection and classification techniques have been studied independently without considering the interaction between both procedures, which leads to a degraded performance. In this paper, we present a new neural network approach, which is called an algorithm learning based neural network (ALBNN), to improve classification accuracy by integrating feature selection and classification procedures. In general, a knowledge-based artificial neural network operates on prior knowledge from domain experience, which provides it with better starting points for the target function and leads to better classification accuracy. However, prior knowledge is usually difficult to identify. Instead of using unknown background resources, the proposed method utilizes prior knowledge that is mathematically calculated from the properties of other learning algorithms such as PCA, LARS, C4.5, and SVM. We employ the extreme learning machine in this study to help obtain better initial points faster and avoid irrelevant time-consuming work, such as determining architecture and manual tuning. ALBNN correctly approximates a target hypothesis by both considering the interaction between two procedures and minimizing individual procedure errors. The approach produces new relevant features and improves the classification accuracy. Experimental results exhibit improved performance in various classification problems. Abstract: This paper introduces two robust forecasting models for efficient prediction of different exchange rates for future months ahead. These models employ Wilcoxon artificial neural network (WANN) and Wilcoxon functional link artificial neural network (WFLANN). The learning algorithms required to train the weights of these models are derived by minimizing a robust norm called Wilcoxon norm. These models offer robust exchange rate predictions in the sense that the training of weight parameters of these models are not influenced by outliers present in the training samples. The Wilcoxon norm considers the rank or position of an error value rather than its amplitude. Simulation based experiments have been conducted using real life data and the results indicate that both models, unlike conventional models, demonstrate consistently superior prediction performance under different densities of outliers present in the training samples. Further, comparison of performance between the two proposed models reveals that both provide almost identical performance but the later involved low computational complexity and hence is preferable over the WANN model. Abstract: In this paper, an intelligent transportation control system (ITCS) using wavelet neural network (WNN) and proportional-integral-derivative-type (PID-type) learning algorithms is developed to increase the safety and efficiency in transportation process. The proposed control system is composed of a neural controller and an auxiliary compensation controller. The neural controller acts as the main tracking controller, which is designed via a WNN to mimic the merits of an ideal total sliding-mode control (TSMC) law. The PID-type learning algorithms are derived from the Lyapunov stability theorem, which are utilized to adjust the parameters of WNN on-line for further assuring system stability and obtaining a fast convergence. Moreover, based on H ∞ control technique, the auxiliary compensation controller is developed to attenuate the effect of the approximation error between WNN and ideal TSMC law, so that the desired attenuation level can be achieved. Finally, to investigate the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy, it is applied to control a marine transportation system and a land transportation system. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed WNN-based ITCS with PID-type learning algorithms can achieve favorable control performance than other control methods. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Automatic communication signal recognition plays an important role for many novel computer and communication technologies. Most of the proposed techniques can only identify a few kinds of digital signal and/or low order of them. They usually require high levels of signal to noise ratio (SNR). In this paper, we investigate twofold. First, we propose an efficient system that uses a combination set of spectral characteristics and higher order moments up to eighth and higher order cumulants up to eighth as the effective features. As the classifier we used a multi-layer perceptron (MLP) neural network. In this stage we investigate different learning algorithms of MLP neural networks that some of them, such as quick prop (QP) learning algorithm, extended delta-bar-delta (EDBD), super self adaptive back propagation (SuperSAB) and conjugate gradient (CG) are proposed for the first time in the area of communication signals recognition. Experimental results show that proposed system discriminates a lot of digital communication signals with high accuracy even at very low SNRs. But a lot of features are used for this recognition. Then at the second fold, in order to reduce the complexity of the recognizer, we have proposed a novel hybrid intelligent technique. In this technique we have optimized the classifier design by Bees Algorithm (BA) for selection of the best features that are fed to the classifier. Abstract: Kernel-based nonlinear characteristic extraction and classification algorithms are popular new research directions in machine learning. In this paper, we propose an improved photometric stereo scheme based on improved kernel-independent component analysis method to reconstruct 3D human faces. Next, we fetch the information of 3D faces for facial face recognition. For reconstruction, we obtain the correct normal vector’s sequence to form the surface, and use a method for enforcing integrability to reconstruct 3D objects. We test our algorithm on a number of real images captured from the Yale Face Database B, and use three kinds of methods to fetch characteristic values. Those methods are called contour-based, circle-based, and feature-based methods. Then, a three-layer, feed-forward neural network trained by a back-propagation algorithm is used to realize a classifier. All the experimental results were compared to those of the existing human face reconstruction and recognition approaches tested on the same images. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed improved kernel independent component analysis (IKICA) method is efficient in reconstruction and face recognition applications. Abstract: Several algorithms exist for testing linear separability. The choice of a particular testing algorithm has effects on the performance of constructive neural network algorithms that are based on the transformation of a nonlinear separability classification problem into a linearly separable one. This paper presents an empirical study of these effects in terms of the topology size, the convergence time, and generalisation level of the neural networks. Six different methods for testing linear separability were used in this study. Four out of the six methods are exact methods and the remaining two are approximative ones. Abstract: This paper presents a procedure to add broader diversity at the beginning of the evolutionary process. It consists of creating two initial populations with different parameter settings, evolving them for a small number of generations, selecting the best individuals from each population in the same proportion and combining them to constitute a new initial population. At this point the main loop of an evolutionary algorithm is applied to the new population. The results show that our proposal considerably improves both the efficiency of previous methodologies and also, significantly, their efficacy in most of the data sets. We have carried out our experimentation on twelve data sets from the UCI repository and two complex real-world problems which differ in their number of instances, features and classes. Abstract: Freeze drying is the best drying technology regarding quality of the end product but it is an expensive method and the high costs of process limit its application to industrial scale. At the same time, the freeze-drying process is based on different parameters, such as drying time, pressure, sample thicknesses, chamber temperature, sample temperatures and relative humidity. So, the determination of drying behaviors, such as moisture content (MC), moisture ratio (MR) and drying rate (DR), of the freeze-drying process are too complex. In this paper, to help the freeze dryer designer and simplify this complex process, the use of artificial neural networks has been proposed. An artificial neural networks (ANN) model has been developed for determination the prediction of drying behaviors, such as MC, MR and DR, of apples in the freeze-drying process. The back-propagation learning algorithm with variant which is Levenberg–Marquardt (LM) and Fermi transfer function have been used in the network. In addition, the statistical validity of the developed model has been determined by using the coefficient of determination (R 2), the root means square error (RMSE) and the mean absolute percentage error (MAPE). Abstract: There are irrelevant features that are redundant or significantly degrade the learning accuracy in the real-world complex classification tasks. This paper presents a new hybrid learning algorithm based on a cooperative coevolutionary algorithm (Co-CEA) with dual populations for designing the radial basis function neural network (RBFNN) models with an explicit feature selection. This approach attempts to complete both the RBFNN construction and the feature selection simultaneously. The proposed algorithm utilizes the Co-CEA’s divide-and-cooperative mechanism, which utilizes the evolutionary algorithms executing in parallel to coevolve subpopulations, corresponding to the hidden layer structure and the dominate features respectively. The algorithm adopts the binary encoding to represent the feature subset and the matrix-form mixed encoding to represent the RBFNN hidden layer structure, and a complete solution is formed via collaborations among the two subpopulations. Experimental results illustrate that the proposed algorithm outperforms other algorithms in references in terms of the classification accuracy, and it is able to obtain both prominent features and good RBFNN structure with higher prediction capability. Abstract: Monoblock centrifugal pumps are widely used in a variety of applications. In many applications the role of monoblock centrifugal pump is critical and condition monitoring is essential. Vibration based continuous monitoring and analysis using machine learning approaches are gaining momentum. Particularly artificial neural networks, fuzzy logic were employed for continuous monitoring and fault diagnosis. Noisy time series prediction is attractive and challenging since it is essential in many fields, such as forecasting, modeling, signal processing, economic and business planning. Radial basis function (RBF) neural network is considered as a good candidate for the prediction problems due to its rapid learning capacity and, therefore, has been applied successfully to nonlinear time series modeling and forecasts. However, the traditional RBF network encounters two primary problems. The first one is that the network performance is very likely to be affected by noise. The second problem is about the determination of the number of hidden nodes. In this paper, we present an M-estimator based robust radial basis function (RBF) learning algorithm with growing and pruning techniques. The Welsch M-estimator and median scale estimator are employed to get rid of the influence from the noise. The concept of neuron significance is adopted to implement the growing and pruning techniques of network nodes. The proposed method not only eliminates the influence of noise, but also dynamically adjusts the number of neurons to approach an appropriate size of the network. The results from the experiments show that the proposed method can produce a minimum prediction error compared with other methods. Furthermore, even adding 30% additive noise of the magnitude of the data, this proposed method still can do a good performance. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: This paper presents an overview of a data analysis method based on self-organizing maps (SOM), a well-known unsupervised neural network learning algorithm, which was applied to a lead-free wave soldering process. The aim of the study was to determine whether the neural network modeling method could be a useful and time-saving way to analyze data from a discrete manufacturing process, such as wave soldering, which is a widely used technique in the electronics industry to solder components on printed circuit boards. The data variables were mostly various process parameters, but also some solder defect numbers were present in the data as a measure of the product quality. The data analysis procedure went as follows. At first, the process data were modeled using the SOM-algorithm. Next, the neuron reference vectors of the formed map were clustered to reveal the desired dominating elements of each territory of the map. At the final stage, the clusters were utilized as sub-models to indicate variable dependencies in these sub-models. The results show that the method presented here can be a good way to analyze this type of process data because interesting interactions between certain process parameters and solder defects were found by means of this data-driven modeling method. When descriptions of data values are too detailed, the computational complexities involved in mining useful knowledge from the database generally increases. This gives rise to the need of tools techniques which can reduce these complexities and mine the valuable information hidden behind the database. There exists number of such techniques viz. decision trees, neural networks, rough-set theory, rule induction, and case-based reasoning which are able to meet the aforesaid objective up to some extent. Each of these techniques has its advantages and limitations that motivate researchers to develop new tools for the mining tasks. In this paper, we have developed a novel methodology, genetically optimized cluster oriented soft decision trees (GCSDT), to glean vital information imbedded in the large databases. In contrast to the standard C-fuzzy decision trees, where granules are developed through fuzzy (soft) clustering, in the proposed architecture granules are developed by means of genetically optimized soft clustering. In the GCSDT architecture, GA ameliorates the difficulty of choosing an initialization for the fuzzy clustering algorithm and always avoids degenerate partitions. This provides an effective means for the optimization of clustering criterion, where an objective function can be illustrated in terms of cluster’s center. Growth of the GCSDT is realized by expanding nodes of the tree, characterized by the highest inconsistency index of the information granules. In order to validate the proposed tree structure it has been deployed on synthetic and machine learning data sets. Moreover, Results are compared with those produced by standard C4.5 decision trees and C-fuzzy decision trees; further student t-test is applied to show that these differences in results are statistically significant. In this paper, a novel multi-hybrid predictive neural network model is proposed based on complex deep learning algorithm, which integrates empirical wavelet transform, random inheritance formula error correction algorithm, deep bidirectional LSTM neural network and Elman recurrent neural network with variational learning rate. The prediction model is selected according to the sequence frequency after EWT feature extraction, and the prediction results are obtained by separately predicting and reintegrating. On the basis of individual model, the structure of deep bidirectional training, random inheritance formula and variational learning rate are proposed, which further ameliorate the performance of the model and achieve more effective data information capture. Simultaneously, the examination of variational learning rate provides us with a feasible parameter selection. The proposed model achieves high-precision prediction of crude oil futures price, and stands out in the multi-model comparison analysis and q -DSCID synchronous evaluation, with superior prediction accuracy.
