Text-line extraction (TLE) from unconstrained handwritten document images is still considered an open research problem. Literature survey reveals that use of various rule-based methods is commonplace in this regard. But these methods mostly fail when the document images have touching and/or multi-skewed text lines or overlapping words/characters and non-uniform inter-line space. To encounter this problem, in this paper, we have used a deep learning-based method. In doing so, we have, for the first time in the literature, applied Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) where we have considered TLE as image-to-image translation task. We have used U-Net architecture for the Generator, and Patch GAN architecture for the discriminator with different combinations of loss functions namely GAN loss, L1 loss and L2 loss. Evaluation is done on two datasets: handwritten Chinese text dataset HIT-MW and ICDAR 2013 Handwritten Segmentation Contest dataset. After exhaustive experimentations, it has been observed that U-Net architecture with combination of the said three losses not only produces impressive results but also outperforms some state-of-the-art methods.

Computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) in medicine is the result of a large amount of effort expended in the interface of medicine and computer science. As some CAD systems in medicine try to emulate the diagnostic decision-making process of medical experts, they can be considered as expert systems in medicine. Furthermore, CAD systems in medicine may process clinical data that can be complex and/or massive in size. They do so in order to infer new knowledge from data and use that knowledge to improve their diagnostic performance over time. Therefore, such systems can also be viewed as intelligent systems because they use a feedback mechanism to improve their performance over time. The main aim of the literature survey described in this paper is to provide a comprehensive overview of past and current CAD developments. This survey/review can be of significant value to researchers and professionals in medicine and computer science. There are already some reviews about specific aspects of CAD in medicine. However, this paper focuses on the entire spectrum of the capabilities of CAD systems in medicine. It also identifies the key developments that have led to today's state-of-the-art in this area. It presents an extensive and systematic literature review of CAD in medicine, based on 251 carefully selected publications. While medicine and computer science have advanced dramatically in recent years, each area has also become profoundly more complex. This paper advocates that in order to further develop and improve CAD, it is required to have well-coordinated work among researchers and professionals in these two constituent fields. Finally, this survey helps to highlight areas where there are opportunities to make significant new contributions. This may profoundly impact future research in medicine and in select areas of computer science.

Intensive review of AI applied as estimators in chemical process systems.Provide guidelines to select and design AI-based estimators.Discussed the advantages, limitations and compare each algorithm.Future suggestions and directions of the research. The versatility of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in process systems is not restricted to modelling and control only, but also as estimators to estimate the unmeasured parameters as an alternative to the conventional observers and hardware sensors. These estimators, also known as software sensors have been successfully applied in many chemical process systems such as reactors, distillation columns, and heat exchanger due to their robustness, simple formulation, adaptation capabilities and minimum modelling requirements for the design. However, the various types of AI methods available make it difficult to decide on the most suitable algorithm to be applied for any particular system. Hence, in this paper, we provide a broad literature survey of several AI algorithms implemented as estimators in chemical systems together with their advantages, limitations, practical implications and comparisons between one another to guide researchers in selecting and designing the AI-based estimators. Future research suggestions and directions in improvising and extending the usage of these estimators in various chemical operating units are also presented.

Multi-Criteria Decision Aid (MCDA) or Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) methods have received much attention from researchers and practitioners in evaluating, assessing and ranking alternatives across diverse industries. Among numerous MCDA/MCDM methods developed to solve real-world decision problems, the Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) continues to work satisfactorily across different application areas. In this paper, we conduct a state-of-the-art literature survey to taxonomize the research on TOPSIS applications and methodologies. The classification scheme for this review contains 266 scholarly papers from 103 journals since the year 2000, separated into nine application areas: (1) Supply Chain Management and Logistics, (2) Design, Engineering and Manufacturing Systems, (3) Business and Marketing Management, (4) Health, Safety and Environment Management, (5) Human Resources Management, (6) Energy Management, (7) Chemical Engineering, (8) Water Resources Management and (9) Other topics. Scholarly papers in the TOPSIS discipline are further interpreted based on (1) publication year, (2) publication journal, (3) authors' nationality and (4) other methods combined or compared with TOPSIS. We end our review paper with recommendations for future research in TOPSIS decision-making that is both forward-looking and practically oriented. This paper provides useful insights into the TOPSIS method and suggests a framework for future attempts in this area for academic researchers and practitioners.

In order to determine how data mining techniques (DMT) and their applications have developed, during the past decade, this paper reviews data mining techniques and their applications and development, through a survey of literature and the classification of articles, from 2000 to 2011. Keyword indices and article abstracts were used to identify 216 articles concerning DMT applications, from 159 academic journals (retrieved from five online databases), this paper surveys and classifies DMT, with respect to the following three areas: knowledge types, analysis types, and architecture types, together with their applications in different research and practical domains. A discussion deals with the direction of any future developments in DMT methodologies and applications: (1) DMT is finding increasing applications in expertise orientation and the development of applications for DMT is a problem-oriented domain. (2) It is suggested that different social science methodologies, such as psychology, cognitive science and human behavior might implement DMT, as an alternative to the methodologies already on offer. (3) The ability to continually change and acquire new understanding is a driving force for the application of DMT and this will allow many new future applications.

Although there have been quite a number of theoretical and practical studies where axiomatic design (AD) principles have been used in the last few years, there is a lack of a comprehensive literature survey which evaluates and classifies these papers. This study provides a recognizable overview of literature on AD principles from the past 20 years and introduces a novel classification scheme covering 63 papers. Each article was classified into four main groups, namely the type of the axiom, the application area, the method, and the evaluation type. Findings of our paper indicate that most of the studies in the literature are application-based papers which use typically the independence axiom. While product design is put forward in the application area, the crisp approach is widely used as an evaluation type. A rise in the fuzzy evaluation based research studies using the information axiom for multi-attribute decision making problems has also been noticed.

Text mining is a semi-automated process of extracting knowledge from a large amount of unstructured data. Given that the amount of unstructured data being generated and stored is increasing rapidly, the need for automated means to process it is also increasing. In this study, we present, discuss and evaluate the techniques used to perform text mining on collections of textual information. A case study is presented using text mining to identify clusters and trends of related research topics from three major journals in the management information systems field. Based on the findings of this case study, it is proposed that this type of analysis could potentially be valuable for researchers in any field.

This paper surveys knowledge management (KM) development using a literature review and classification of articles from 1995 to 2002 with keyword index in order to explore how KM technologies and applications have developed in this period. Based on the scope of 234 articles of knowledge management applications, this paper surveys and classifies KM technologies using the seven categories as: KM framework, knowledge-based systems, data mining, information and communication technology, artificial intelligence/expert systems, database technology, and modeling, together with their applications for different research and problem domains. Some discussion is presented, indicating future development for knowledge management technologies and applications as the followings: (1) KM technologies tend to develop towards expert orientation, and KM applications development is a problem-oriented domain. (2) Different social studies methodologies, such as statistical method, are suggested to implement in KM as another kind of technology. (3) Integration of qualitative and quantitative methods, and integration of KM technologies studies may broaden our horizon on this subject. (4) The ability to continually change and obtain new understanding is the power of KM technologies and will be the application of future works.

This paper outlines the development of a knowledge-based system (KBS) which integrates environmental factors into the supplier selection process. The system employs both case-based reasoning (CBR) and decision support components including multi-attribute analysis (MAA). Traditionally, when evaluating supplier performance, companies have considered factors such as price, quality, flexibility etc. However, with environmental pressures increasing, many companies have begun to consider environmental issues and the measurement of their suppliers' environmental performance. The framework presented in this paper was developed from an analysis of environmental management practices in a number of companies along with a thorough literature survey. The paper then outlines how the most important parts of the framework were computerised using KBS techniques. An evaluation of the system implemented in a multinational company is presented along with proposals for future system enhancements.
