Abstract

The effect of d-norgestrel, 30μg, on the oral glucose tolerance test was studied in 49 Thai women. There was a significant elevation of the blood glucose level at 60minutes during the test in women who had taken d-norgestrel for 6 and 12months. Insulin levels in the blood were significantly elevated over control levels in both groups of women at 90,120,150, and 180minutes during the test. There was no difference in the results obtained at 6months and 12months. There was also no significant difference in the fasting blood glucose or insulin levels in the three groups of women. The results indicate that d-norgestrel at a daily dose of 30μg has an effect on carbohydrate metabolism in Thai women.

At 60 minutes, women who had taken d-norgestrel for 6 and 12 months showed a significant increase in blood glucose levels (p less than .05). There was a significant increase in blood insulin levels at 90, 120, 150, and 180 minutes in both groups (p less than .05). However, fa sting blood glucose or insulin levels were not markedly different. It is concluded that d-norgestrel, at the dose studied, affects carbohydrat e metabolism in Thai women, and it is suggested that this may be a characteristic effect of 19-nor steroids.
