Background: Due to current increased life expectancy, the quality of life (QoL) of senior patients is gaining in importance. The aims of this study were: to estimate QoL in a group of patients, aged above 64 years, that is cared for by general practitioners (GPs) in Krakow, Poland, and to find relationships between elements of QoL and the results of comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) and other important medical and social factors. Methods: We designed a cross-sectional, questionnaire study among patients who attended GPs' surgeries from April 2018 to April 2019. To examine the patients, we used the Euro-Quality of Life Questionnaire (EQ-5D-5L) and eight scales forming CGA: the Activities of Daily Living, the Instrumental Activities of Daily Living, Mini-Mental State Examination, Geriatric Depression Scale, Timed Up and Go Test, Mini Nutritional Assessment, Clinical Frailty Scale and Athens Insomnia Scale. Results: The lowest QoL was observed in dimensions of pain/discomfort and mobility, where 70% and 52% of patients, respectively, reported problems in these areas. Only 91 (21%) respondents had highest results in all five dimensions of QoL. The average score in the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) of the EQ-5D5L (representing self-rated health on a given day) was 62.36 ± 18.98 points. Statistically significant relationships were observed between QoL and age, physical activity and multimorbidity (in all cases p < 0.001). The results of QoL were correlated with every aspect of CGA, while the strongest relationship was noticed between scores in the EQ-5D-5L VAS scale and scales assessing depression and frailty (p < 0.001; r = -0.57 both). Conclusions: Our study showed that in senior patients in Krakow QoL was relatively high. Seniors mostly complained of pain/discomfort and problems with mobility. Moreover, dimensions of QoL were connected with the results of CGA. During visits, GPs should specifically question patients about the above mentioned aspects of QoL. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: Oral health and diseases are significant components of general health. However, oral health-care remains at the lowest of older patients' priorities. The inability to obtain dental care can result in progression of dental disease, leading to a diminished quality of life and overall health. Teledentistry (TD) provides an opportunity to improve the quality of oral health services. The aim of our narrative review was to analyze the usefulness of teledentistry as a part of telemedicine to improve oral health in the elderly. Materials/Methods: The PubMed database search was done for: teledentistry, oral health, oralhealth related diseases, elderly, older adults. Results: The applicability of TD has been demonstrated from children to older adults. Older adults have many obstacles in getting oral health care, including low income, lack health insurance, frailty, anxiety, depression, mobility problems or other handicaps. Available data suggests that the usefulness of TD in the provision of oral care in elderly people living in residential aged care facilities. Moreover, TD procedures were found to be as accurate as traditional face-to-face dental examinations, they was cost-effective and well accepted among patients and caregivers. Conclusions: TD might be a very useful tool for professional education, improving access and patient satisfaction of dental care. However, such TD modes would be difficult to widely implementation in community-dwelling older people who cannot access dental care. Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of multimorbidity and co-existed diseases in hospitalized patients with heart failure (HF) in relation to age and gender., Methods: The nationwide cross-sectional survey had been conducted in Poland (April-November 2013), in 260 randomly selected hospital wards. A trained nurse contacted with one physician, drawn from the list of all doctors working in the selected hospital's wards, who completed the study questionnaires regarding to clinical characteristics of the last five HF patients, who were discharged from an internal or cardiology ward., Results: Mean age ± SD of the patients was 72.1 ± 10.1 years, 50% were female but the women were significantly older than men. Criterion of multimorbidity met almost 100% of the HF patients. There were no significant differences in the number of co-existed cardiovascular (CV) and non-CV diseases according to gender, but different clinical profile of HF men and women was observed. Women more frequently had thyroid disease, peripheral artery disease and cognitive impairment, whereas men was characterized by higher prevalence of cardiac, pulmonary and hepatic diseases. The co-morbidity significantly increased with age, notably due to increasing prevalence of non-CV diseases. Diabetes, chronic kidney disease, hypercholesterolemia and anemia were the most common non-CV diseases. Among HF patients, 83% suffered from three or more co-morbidities., Conclusions: The study confirms, that multimorbidity is a considerable problem in patients with HF. Besides age, multimorbidity pattern is strongly dependent on gender. The multidisciplinary approach is warranted in particular in elderly subjects who su er from HF.

Presented studies were conducted to assess the influence of alternating (AC) and/or static (DC) magnetic fields (MF) or combined with puromycin (PMC) on U937 cell line viability. The magnitude of DC MF was enclosed in the range (2 ÷ 6) mT. In case of AC MF, four frequencies were set: 12 Hz, 25 Hz, 35 Hz, 50 Hz and magnetic induction value was adjusted to 6.5(rms) mT. The reaction of samples exposed to MF and/or PMC was presented as cell viability coefficient S defined as a ratio of viable cells in the sample to viable cells in the relevant control sample, analyzed by flow cytometry. For PMC treated sample the percentage of viable cells decreased about factor 3. MF alone did not influence cell viability regardless of the type of exposure while simultaneous action of ACDC MF mode and PMC significantly influenced viability of U937 cells. The viability coefficient S was in the range of (0.13 ∓ 0.07 ÷ 0.64 ∓ 0.20) and exerted a non-linear relation with frequency of the AC MF component. The maximal lethal influence (S = 0.13 ∓ 0.07) was observed for DC MF = 6 mT and frequency of AC MF equal to 35 Hz. Observed bio-effects were confronted with the physical models assuming the Ca2+ ions transport disturbance and/or protein complexes dysfunction in cells due to MF action.
