Market research carried out in a simulated supermarket test and focus groups (both in 1993) show that shoppers are more likely to buy irradiated ground beef when they have been informed of benefits and safety of irradiation. Educational and marketing strategies intended to inform should emphasize safety, which is the major concern, but also should include coverage of benefits, and should use nontechnical language. Consumers need to know that irradiation in the appropriate range will not make food radioactive or cause cancer. Nonprofit bipartisan groups inspire greater trust in consumers.
