Thermal papers, commonly used for printed receipts or lottery tickets, are omnipresent in our everyday life. They are regarded as semi-porous substrates, and yet can be critical to analyze when looking for latent fingermarks due to their thermosensibility. The aim of this study was to investigate a development sequence that would better combine the adequate detection techniques in order to maximize the chances to develop latent fingermarks left on these substrates. Different methods of development have been compared on test substrates: black magnetic powder, Lumicyano™, thermal development, ninhydrin and 1,2-indanedione/ZnCl2. Whitening stages and thermal development have been focused on, tested and optimized. The results of these preliminary tests enabled the study of three development sequences. They have subsequently been compared to the one currently used in the Gendarmerie's laboratories and the best results have been provided during pseudo-operational comparative trials by one of these sequences, consisting in 6 stages. WET UCIO is an inexpensive carbon-based powder suspension, reportedly as effective as commercially available formulations for latent fingermark detection on the sticky side of adhesive tapes. However, the surfactant solution used in WET UCIO is not readily accessible outside Europe, limiting its use in Seychelles or other non-European jurisdictions. In this study, the UCIO formulation was modified based on a 'frugal forensic' approach, by replacing the surfactant solution with an in-house sodium dodecyl sulfate solution prepared in 5 % aqueous ethanol. A comparative assessment against Wetwop™ using eight different pressure-sensitive adhesive tapes found that the modified formulation was at least as effective as commercial powder suspension. Adhesive tape is one type of common item which can be encountered in criminal cases involving rape, murder, kidnapping and explosives. It is often the case that a suspect deposits latent fingerprints on the sticky side of adhesive tape material when tying up victims, manufacturing improvised explosive devices or packaging illegal goods. However, the adhesive tapes found at crime scenes are usually stuck together or attached to a certain substrate, and thus the latent fingerprints may be hidden beneath the tapes. Current methods to detect latent fingerprint hidden beneath adhesive tape need to peel it off first and then apply physical or chemical methods to develop the fingerprint, which undergo complicated procedures and would affect the original condition of latent print. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a novel applied techniques in forensics which enables obtaining cross-sectional structure with the advantages of non-invasive, in-situ, high resolution and high speed. In this paper, a custom-built spectral-domain OCT (SD-OCT) system with a hand-held probe was employed to detect fingerprints hidden beneath different types of adhesive tapes. Three-dimensional (3D) OCT reconstructions were performed and the en face images were presented to reveal the hidden fingerprints. The results demonstrate that OCT is a promising tool for rapidly detecting and recovering high quality image of latent fingerprint hidden beneath adhesive tape without any changes to the original state and preserve the integrity of the evidence., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier B.V. Environmentally acquired particles (EAP), trapped along the edges of duct tape in the exposed adhesive, are a possible source of information regarding prior exposures of the tape and a possible means to associate duct tape rolls to segments of duct tape that are collected as traces during the investigation of criminal activity. The recovery and separation of EAP is complicated by (1) the need to separate the particles from the adhesive, and (2) the presence of adhesive filler and pigment particles that are part of adhesive formulations. Approaches such as cutting the tape edge, followed by solvent extraction, or swabbing of the duct tape edges using solvents, result in thousands of adhesive filler/pigment particles, overwhelming much smaller numbers of EAP. A recovery method has been developed employing a 10% solution of ethylcellulose (EC) in ethanol. Duct tape segments are pressed onto a glass plate and a bead of the viscous EC solution is pipetted along the edge. After drying, the EC forms a robust film that is peeled away from the tape edge, lifting the EAP along with only very small amounts of adhesive. The film lift (containing EC, duct tape adhesive and EAP) can be examined directly by steromicroscopy and particles of interest can be removed by softening the film using locally applied ethanol. Particles can be examined in situ by transmitted light microscopy using glycerol as a mounting medium to match the EC film. Batch recovery of particles from the film can be achieved by dissolution of the film lift in xylene and washing to remove adhesive residues. Xylene is then removed by washing with ethanol, leaving an ethanol suspension of EAP along with the duct tape filler/pigment particles. Larger particles can be separated by sieving and smaller particles can be recovered by filtration. This method was found to efficiently collect EAP found trapped along the edges of duct tape in the exposed adhesive, as well as for the preparation of these particles for microscopical and instrumental analysis. Limitations, not fully evaluated, include the loss or alteration of some particle types by dissolution, agitation and filtration steps. Further development of this method is expected to provide a means to recover trace particles from the edges of other types of tape and from related adhesive products such as stamps and labels. The application of powders to fingerprints has long been established as an effective and reliable method for developing latent fingerprints. The powders adhere to the ridge pattern of the fingerprint only, thus allowing the image to be visualised. Fingerprints developed in situ at a crime scene routinely undergo lifting with specialist tapes to facilitate subsequent laboratory analysis. As with all recovered evidence these samples would be stored in evidence bags to allow secure transit from the scene to the laboratory and also to preserve the chain of evidence. In this paper, the application of Raman spectroscopy for the analysis of exogenous material in latent fingerprints is reported for contaminated fingerprints that had been treated with powders and also subsequently lifted with adhesive tapes. A selection of over the counter (OTC) analgesics were used as samples for the analysis and contaminated fingerprints were deposited on clean glass slides. The application of aluminium or iron based powders to contaminated fingerprints did not interfere with the Raman spectra obtained for the contaminants. In most cases background fluorescence attributed to the sebaceous content of the latent fingerprint was reduced by the application of the powder thus reducing spectral interference. Contaminated fingerprints developed with powders and then lifted with lifting tapes were also examined. The combination of these two techniques did not interfere with the successful analysis of exogenous contaminants by Raman spectroscopy. The lifting process was repeated using hinge lifters. As the hinge lifters exhibited strong Raman bands the spectroscopic analysis was more complex and an increase in the number of exposures to the detector allowed for improved clarification. Raman spectra of developed and lifted fingerprints recorded through evidence bags were obtained and it was found that the detection process was not compromised in any way. Although the application of powders did not interfere with the detection process the time taken to locate the contaminant was increased due to the physical presence of more material within the fingerprint. The presence of interfering Raman bands from lifting tapes is another potential complication. This, however, could be removed by spectral subtraction or by the choice of lifting tapes that have only weak Raman bands.

Purpose: DNA is a highly valuable lead to identify people who were possibly involved in a crime. Even by small contact events, minute amounts of DNA ('trace DNA') can be transferred from a DNA source to an evidentiary item, which can be enough for a successful DNA analysis. The focus of this research is to get more insight in the collection of trace DNA from textiles by 'stubbing', which is a tape-lifting method using double-sided tape placed on a stub. The relation between the 'stubbing force' (the normal force that is applied during stubbing) and the collection efficiency of microspheres is investigated.Methods: Microspheres (Ø25 μm) were used as mock traces to mimic DNA-containing micro-traces. The particles were applied to textile substrates in a suspension of ethanol that was left to evaporate before sampling. Experiments were performed on three different polyester substrates. Traces were collected by stubbing while using 5 different stubbing forces. The number of microspheres placed on each substrate was counted before sampling and all stub-tapes were analysed after sampling to count how many of the microspheres were picked up, both by using stitched images from a digital light microscope. Custom-made image recognition software was used to automatically count the microspheres.Results: On all tested polyester substrates, the mean efficiency of the collection of microspheres increased with increasing stubbing force in a concave down increasing function. The increase of collection efficiency stagnated around 3-12 N, depending on the substrate material. The theoretical maximum collection efficiencies varied between 38% and 78%, depending on substrate material as well.Conclusions: Stubbing with a force higher than 12 N does not notably influence the collection efficiency from the variety of textiles that were tested. However, because the theoretical maxima of the collection efficiencies were far from 100%, it is highly likely that stubbing multiple times on the same spot of a substrate increases the total collection efficiency. Experiments were conducted to investigate the effectiveness of a range of fingermark visualisation processes on brand new, uncirculated, £5 polymer banknotes (and their test note predecessors), as produced by the Bank of England (BoE). In the main study of this paper, a total of 14 individual processes were investigated on BoE £5 polymer banknotes, which included both 'Category A' processes (as recommended in the Home Office Fingermark Visualisation Manual) as well as recently developed processes, including fpNatural® 2 powder (cuprorivaite) from Foster+Freeman and a vacuum metal deposition sequence that evaporates silver followed by zinc. Results from this preliminary investigation indicate that fpNatural® 2, multimetal deposition, Wet Powder™ Black, iron oxide powder suspension and black magnetic powder are the most effective processes on these uncirculated £5 BoE polymer banknotes, when viewed under "primary viewing" conditions (white light or fluorescence). Additional fingermarks were visualised on the polymer banknotes following the subsequent use of reflected infrared imaging and lifting techniques, and with the benefit of these techniques taken into consideration, the aforementioned processes remained amongst the most effective overall. This work provides initial insight into fingermark visualisation strategies for BoE £5 polymer banknotes, and the need for further studies in order to generate mature operational guidance is emphasised. Dual recovery of forensic evidence is beneficial for crime scene and evidence processing as it can potentially double the evidential value of a single source, even more so in instances of DNA fingermarks. The use of adhesive liftering media has shown comparable results to swabbing when dealing with trace DNA recovery. Gelatine lifters have displayed the potential to recover DNA from latent fingermarks with minimal alteration to friction ridge detail post application, yet their ability to recover DNA has not fully been explored. The aim of this research was to compare the use of gelatine lifters with more readily available masking tape in their ability to recover cellular material from latent fingermarks. Natural (n = 120) and sebaceous (n = 120) fingermarks were deposited and aged in time frames from fresh, 1-day, 2-day, 1-week, 2-weeks, and 1 month. DiamondTM Nucleic Acid Dye was used as a visualisation method for any DNA containing cellular material. Images of the fingermarks pre and post lifting, and on the lifting media were imaged using the DSC®5 system. The media's ability to recover cellular material was assessed using fluorescent particle analysis by the employment of the free software ImageJ. Fluorescent particles could be observed on the lifting media post lifting with the use of DiamondTM Dye. Time was not seen to influence the variation in the number of fluorescent particles observed. The use of gelatine lifters was found to have a higher amount of recovered DNA containing cellular material than masking tape. Visualisation of particles on masking tape were inhibited by its porosity and absorption of the dye. Some fingermark detail could be observed in the gelatine lifters. Fingermark detection is in constant evolution, with new techniques being developed and existing ones being continuously optimised. Recently, researchers have begun to express interest in artificial fingermark secretions to overcome the issues arising from the variability of fingermark composition. Some of these artificial secretions have started to appear on the market in the form of pads that can be used to deposit fingermarks with a known and controlled composition. This study aimed at assessing the reliability of three commercially-available pads by comparing the results to those obtained by real fingermarks, using six detection techniques (1,2-indanedione/zinc, ninhydrin, cyanoacrylate followed by rhodamine 6G staining, gold/zinc vacuum metal deposition, and physical developer) on five substrate types (copy and recycled paper, acetate, glass, and glossy paper). The results showed that the artificial fingermarks deposited with these pads reacted in an unreliable way, notably when treated with complex detection techniques such as Physical Developer. Further, the high concentration of some of the target compounds found in the artificial secretion led to an over performance of some detection techniques, which could mislead the operator to overestimating the efficiency of a given method. The resulting artificial fingermarks are considered too dissimilar to real fingermarks to be used as quality control standards and better simulants need to be found for a more efficient and realistic control of the variability. Three novel fluorescent dyes were evaluated for the detection of latent fingermarks on different types and colors of adhesive tapes. Compared with the conventional reagents used to reveal latent fingermarks on these surfaces, these new fluorescent dyes have many advantages. They are highly selective to fingermarks, require only a simple procedure, do not need pre- or post-treatment, have high thermal and photochemical stability, are low in cost and use only water as a solvent. In addition, the emitted fluorescence creates a sharp contrast with the fingermark surface, meaning the fingermarks can be clearly visualized and photographed when excited with longwave ultraviolet light (365nm). Abstract: The ability of two mass spectrometric methods, surface-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time of flight-mass spectrometry (SALDI-TOF-MS) and direct analysis in real time (DART-MS), to detect the presence of seven common explosives (six nitro-organic- and one peroxide-type) in spiked latent fingermarks has been examined. It was found that each explosive could be detected with nanogram sensitivity for marks resulting from direct finger contact with a glass probe by DART-MS or onto stainless steel target plates using SALDI-TOF-MS for marks pre-dusted with one type of commercial black magnetic powder. These explosives also could be detected in latent marks lifted from six common surfaces (paper, plastic bag, metal drinks can, wood laminate, adhesive tape and white ceramic tile) whereas no explosive could be detected in equivalent pre-dusted marks on the surface of a commercial lifting tape by the DART-MS method due to high background interference from the tape material. The presence of TNT and Tetryl could be detected in pre-dusted latent fingermarks on a commercial lifting tape for up to 29 days sealed and stored under ambient conditions. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Pressure sensitive tapes such as duct tape are a common trace type sent for forensic analysis. The limited variation of tape backings and adhesives can provide valuable linkage evidence between a scene, a victim or a person of interest. Fingermarks are also often found on tapes and prioritised over tape analyses. This project aimed to investigate the effects of fingermark enhancement chemicals, namely Wet Powder™, cyanoacrylate and cyanoacrylate stained with rhodamine 6G, on various tapes and their comparison with untreated tapes. The changes in physical and optical features were observed using a Video Spectral Comparator (VSC) and microscopy. Chemical changes were analysed by Attenuated Total Reflectance-Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR). Most physical and optical properties were not heavily affected by the treatments. An increase in fluorescence was observed with specimens stained with rhodamine 6G as might be expected. Significant chemical changes were observed in the FTIR spectra produced from cyanoacrylate fuming. Polyethylene backings and rubber adhesives were heavily affected while polypropylene backings were moderately affected. Cellulose backings, polyester and polyacrylate adhesives were not significantly affected. Wet Powder™ treatment proved useful for enhancing fingermarks on most adhesives while leaving behind little chemical residue that might interfere in a forensic comparison. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Duct tape is a common type material found at crime scenes such as sexual assaults, murders, kidnappings, and bombings. During the examination of a known and questioned item, a 3D realignment along their edges is known as a physical fit and is often regarded as conclusive evidence that the items were once part of a single object. The conclusion of a fit between edges relies on the examiner's judgment to identify distinctive features across the tape ends. However, there are currently no consensus-based methodologies or standards to inform their opinions. This study developed a practical method to qualify and quantify tape end match features using edge similarity scores (ESS) and provided an empirically demonstrable basis to assess the significance of duct tape fracture fits. ESS were calculated as the proportion of observed matching sections per scrim bins across the fractured edge, providing a quantifiable criterion and means for a systematic peer review process. A set of 2280 duct tape end comparisons were analyzed for the validation study. The probative value of physical fits was evaluated through similarity metrics, error rates, and score-based likelihood ratios. The effects of separation method, stretching, and tape grade on the distribution of ESS and the overall accuracy are reported. The accuracy ranged from 84.9 % (higher quality hand-torn set) to over 99 % (low and mid-quality sets). No false positives were reported for any of the sets examined. On average, ESS higher than 80 % provided a score likelihood ratio (SLR) that supported the conclusion of a match, and ESS lower than 25 % provided an SLR supporting the conclusion of non-match.
