Open pine ecosystems of the southern United States are a conservation priority for many agencies, organizations, and private landowners. These woodlands, characterized by moderately-stocked overstories, low cover of midstory, and grass-dominated herbaceous groundcover, provide important habitat for a suite of rare and declining wildlife species. To provide guidance for land managers engaged in habitat restoration in open pine ecosystems, ranges of desired conditions for elements of vegetation structure have been developed using literature survey and expert opinion. We compared empirical data on habitat occupancy for 17 wildlife species from second-growth longleaf pine woodlands in southwestern Georgia with recommended ranges for basal area (BA) of all pine, BA of pine ≥ 35.5 cm dbh, percent canopy cover, percent herbaceous cover, and percent shrub cover. Vegetation data were taken from 864 monitoring plots and Mahalanobis distance models were used to develop habitat suitability indices from the wildlife data. Recommendations for shrub cover and BA of pines ≥ 35.5 cm fit well with model predictions for all wildlife species. However, mean BA of all pines at sites used by wildlife were at the low end of the recommended range. Herbaceous cover at sites used by wildlife was well below the recommended range, whereas canopy cover was well above recommendations, suggesting these ranges should be expanded. These modifications could provide managers of open pine ecosystems greater flexibility, allowing them to incorporate a broader suite of objectives in their management while still providing habitat for wildlife species of concern. Moreover, our models suggest that monitoring presence of open pine indicator bird species may be an efficient method to assess restoration or management progress of open canopy pine systems.

Uneven-aged silviculture is increasingly viewed as ecologically and economically appropriate strategy to manage forest ecosystems. Consequently, there is interest in converting intensively managed pine plantations to uneven-aged stands in the southeastern United States. Understanding biophysical factors that determine performance and growth of desirable species is critical to success of such conversions. We initiated a replicated, long-term, operational-scale stand conversion experiment in mature slash pine (Pinus elliottii Engelm.) plantations in mesic-wet flatwoods sites in northwest Florida, and examined how five conversion harvests (shelterwood, group selection, staggered third row thin, third row thin, cut 2 leave 3 thin harvests), in addition to an uncut control, affected understory light availability in these forests. Light availability was measured in terms of leaf area index, sky, and fractions of Absorbed Photosynthetically Active Radiation (both direct and diffuse). The values of these variables were derived by analyzing a total of 880 (450 in the harvest treatment plots and additional 430 in the gaps of group selection) Digital Hemispherical Photographs using image analyzing software CAN-EYE. We found that shelterwood harvest resulted in highest light availability, whereas greatest variability in light conditions was observed following group selection harvests. Among the four circular gap sizes (0.1, 0.2, 0.4 and 0.8 ha) we studied, gaps of larger sizes had greater light availability. Light availability increased as the distance from the gap edge increased and was highest either in the center of the gap or slightly towards northern and western sides of the gap center. Variability in light availability increased as gap size increased from 0.1 to 0.4 ha but was reduced in the 0.8 ha gap. In shade-intolerant species like slash pine in wet flatwoods-- where soil moisture and nutrients are generally not limiting-- light availability could be the most critical factor determining the success of regeneration and stand conversion. Overall, the results indicated that shelterwood harvest resulted in highest average light availability which would be conducive to slash pine regeneration while group selection harvest created the most diverse light environment during the stand conversion which may promote a broader diversity of groundcover species. Long-term monitoring of regeneration growth and recruitment following prescribed burning and over multiple cutting cycles will determine if slash pine can be sustainably managed using uneven-aged silviculture.

Establishing herbaceous groundcover is essential for oak woodland and savanna restoration. In the Appalachian region, woody vegetation in the understory can persist through many fires and interfere with achieving this goal. Herbicide applications could reduce such vegetation and interact with canopy-disturbance and fire to accelerate restoration. In stands thinned to woodland (16 m2 ha−1, 75% canopy closure) or savanna (5 m2 ha−1, 24% canopy closure) conditions and burned biennially in the fall (October) or spring (March), we economically applied triclopyr (Garlon® 3A) to understory woody plants using foliar and cut-surface techniques in the fall between fires. The removal of fire’s influence on plant community succession has resulted in the near disappearance of oak (Quercus spp.) woodlands and savannas from the Appalachian region. Negative trends in associated plant and wildlife species could be reversed if these communities are restored, but management has been limited by inadequate canopy disturbance, resprouting of woody plants, and a lack of empirical research. Shrews are integral components of forest food webs and may rely on downed woody debris to provide microhabitats that satisfy high moisture and metabolic requirements. However, woody biomass harvests glean downed woody debris to use as a bioenergy feedstock. Biomass Harvesting Guidelines (BHGs) provide guidance on the amount and distribution of downed woody debris retained after harvest to ensure ecological sustainability of woody biomass harvesting and limit detrimental effects on wildlife. However, the success of Biomass Harvesting Guidelines at reaching sustainability goals, including conservation of wildlife habitat, has not been tested in an operational setting. Thus, we compared shrew captures among six woody biomass harvesting treatments in pine plantations in North Carolina, USA from April to August 2011–2014 (n = 4) and Georgia, USA from April to August 2011–2013 (n = 4). Treatments included: (1) woody biomass harvest with no BHGs; (2) 15% retention with woody biomass dispersed; (3) 15% retention with woody biomass clustered; (4) 30% retention with woody biomass dispersed; (5) 30% retention with woody biomass clustered; and (6) no woody biomass harvested. We sampled shrews with drift fence arrays and compared relative abundance of shrews among treatments using analysis of variance. Additionally, we used general linear regression models to evaluate the influence of downed woody debris volume and vegetation structure on shrew capture success at each drift fence for species with >100 captures/state/year. In 53,690 trap nights, we had 1,712 shrew captures representing three species, Cryptotis parva, Blarina carolinensis, and Sorex longirostris. We did not detect consistent differences in shrew relative abundance among woody biomass harvest treatments, but relative abundance of all species increased over time as vegetation became established. Unmitigated forestry operations have the potential to impact upon suspended sediment yields within headwater catchments. Best Management Practices (BMPs) are therefore required to reduce the effects on downstream users and to protect the integrity of aquatic ecosystems. Accordingly, in New South Wales, Australia, harvesting and roading activities on multiple use State forests must comply with Environment Protection Licences (EPLs) that require BMPs to be used to protect the aquatic environment from water pollution. The BMPs include soil conservation measures for the design of bridges, culverts and causeways; appropriate drainage spacings on roads and skid trails; seasonal harvesting restrictions; slope restrictions for harvesting and road construction activities; wet weather restrictions on the use of roads and log landings; and protection of all drainage features, including zero order streams, by the use of filter strips and/or buffer strips from where harvesting is excluded. In this study, conducted between 2001 and 2009 in Kangaroo River State forest, a replicated paired catchment experimental design was utilised to assess the effects of forestry activities on suspended sediment yields within three catchments selectively harvested using EPL-compliant BMPs. We hypothesised that harvesting within three treated catchments would increase suspended sediment yields but that the BMPs would reduce the magnitude and persistence of any measured effects. Harvesting during 2007 resulted in an increase in streamflow equivalent to 25.2 mm y −1 to 46.4 mm y −1 for each 10% of the area harvested in two of the three treated catchments, which is consistent with previous studies worldwide. Mean monthly concentrations of suspended sediment did not change following harvesting; however, the suspended sediment yield of one catchment, I-3, was significantly increased by 25.2% in the immediate post-harvest period. The overall suspended sediment yields remained low with monthly yields ranging from 0 kg ha −1 during cease-to-flow conditions in all catchments to a high of 116.1 kg ha −1 during February 2009 in the I-2 catchment. The measured increase in suspended sediment yield due to selective harvesting in the I-3 catchment was limited to a few post-harvest flow events and had subsided within 12 months of the cessation of harvesting. The BMPs utilised during the harvesting operations, the ridge-top location of roads and log landings, and the high degree of groundcover retained on skid trails and the General Harvest Area in the absence of a regeneration burn contributed to the minimal impacts measured during this study.

Longleaf pine ( Pinus palustris ) ecosystems are characterized by a diverse community of native groundcover species. Critics of plantation forestry claim that loblolly ( Pinus taeda ) and slash pine ( Pinus elliottii ) forests are devoid of native groundcover due to associated management practices. As a result of these practices, some believe that ecosystem functions characteristic of longleaf pine are lost under loblolly and slash pine plantation management. Our objective was to quantify and compare vegetation composition and structure of longleaf, loblolly, and slash pine forests of differing ages, management strategies, and land-use histories. Information from this study will further our understanding and lead to inferences about functional differences among pine cover types. Vegetation and environmental data were collected in 49 overstory plots across Southlands Experiment Forest in Bainbridge, GA. Nested plots, i.e. midstory, understory, and herbaceous, were replicated four times within each overstory plot. Over 400 species were identified. Herbaceous species richness was variable for all three pine cover types. Herbaceous richness for longleaf, slash, and loblolly pine averaged 15, 13, and 12 species per m 2 , respectively. Longleaf pine plots had significantly more ( p p Multivariate analyses provided additional perspectives on vegetation patterns. Ordination and classification procedures consistently placed herbaceous plots into two groups which we refer to as longleaf pine benchmark (34 plots) and non-benchmark (15 plots). Benchmark plots typically contained numerous herbaceous species characteristic of relic longleaf pine/wiregrass communities found in the area. Conversely, non-benchmark plots contained fewer species characteristic of relic longleaf pine/wiregrass communities and more ruderal species common to highly disturbed sites. The benchmark group included 12 naturally regenerated longleaf plots and 22 loblolly, slash, and longleaf pine plantation plots encompassing a broad range of silvicultural disturbances. Non-benchmark plots included eight afforested old-field plantation plots and seven cutover plantation plots. Regardless of overstory species, all afforested old fields were low either in native species richness or in abundance. Varying degrees of this groundcover condition were also found in some cutover plantation plots that were classified as non-benchmark. Environmental variables strongly influencing vegetation patterns included agricultural history and fire frequency. Results suggest that land-use history, particularly related to agriculture, has a greater influence on groundcover composition and structure in southern pine forests than more recent forest management activities or pine cover type. Additional research is needed to identify the potential for afforested old fields to recover native herbaceous species. In the interim, high-yield plantation management should initially target old-field sites which already support reduced numbers of groundcover species. Sites which have not been farmed in the past 50–60 years should be considered for longleaf pine restoration and multiple-use objectives, since they have the greatest potential for supporting diverse native vegetation.
