Fire suppression has been reported to homogenize landscapes in regions that historically experienced frequent wildfire. The Illilouette Creek Basin in Yosemite National Park experienced nearly 100 years of fire suppression, but after a change in management strategy it is now one of the few areas in the United States that has experienced a frequent fire regime for the past half-century. This study quantifies changing landscape properties in the Basin from its fire-suppressed state to the present. These landscape properties range from the relative dominance of different vegetation types to the spatial distribution of vegetation patches. This is the first detailed study of watershed-scale changes in overstory vegetation within a landscape transitioning from a fire suppressed condition to frequent, mixed severity wildfires. We mapped major vegetation types over time within Illilouette Creek Basin using high resolution aerial images from four different decades, starting with the final years of a fire-suppressed period and capturing multiple snapshots during forty years of repeated fires. We quantify landscape heterogeneity and vegetation patch shape properties using landscape metrics. From 1969 to 2012, conifer cover decreased by 24% while shrub area increased by 35%, sparse meadow area increased by 199% and dense meadows by 155%. The Shannon’s Evenness Index based on these four vegetation types increased from 0.4 to 0.7, indicating increased landscape heterogeneity. This study demonstrates that wildfires can return diversity to a fire-suppressed landscape, even after protracted fire suppression. Management of forests to restore fire regimes has the potential to maintain healthy, resilient landscapes in frequent fire-adapted ecosystems.

Lidar data provide information on the vertical and horizontal structure of forests, and lidar remote sensing can be effective in characterizing the forest habitats of mammals. This study explored the ability of lidar-derived metrics to capture topography and forest structure surrounding denning trees used by the Pacific fisher (Martes pennanti) as a case study to illustrate the utility of lidar remote sensing in studying mammal-habitat associations. Lidar data were collected in September 2007 across conifer dominated forests in the Sierra Nevada Mountains that include a full range of forest density. We used Classification and Regression Trees (CART) to statistically compare the slope and lidar-derived forest height and structure metrics in the circular area (with radius of 10–50 m) surrounding denning trees and randomly selected non-denning trees. We accessed our model accuracy using resubstitution and cross-validation methods. Our results show that there is a strong association between fisher denning activity and its surrounding forested environment across scales, with high classification accuracy (overall accuracies above 80% and cross-validation accuracies above 70%) at 20, 30 and 50 m ranges. The best classification accuracies were found at 20 m (optimal resubstitution accuracy 86.2% and cross-validation accuracy 78%). Tree height and slope were important variables in classifying the area immediately surrounding denning trees; at scales larger than 20 m, forest structure and complexity became more important. The variables identified were also consistent with those identified from previous studies describing fisher resting tree structure. Based on these findings, we conclude that lidar remote sensing has utility in forest characterization for fishers and has great potential for mammal studies.

Sudden oak death, caused byPhytophthora ramorum, is widely established in mesic forests of coastal central and northern California. In 2000, we placed 18 plots in two Marin County sites to monitor dis- ease progression in coast live oaks (Quercus agrifolia), California black oaks (Q. kelloggii), and tanoaks (Lithocarpus densiflorus), the species that are most consistently killed by the pathogen in these areas. Through early 2008, the numbers of newly infected trees increased for all species. A new forest disease called Sudden Oak Death, caused by the pathogen Phytophthora ramorum, occurs in coastal hardwood forests in California and Oregon. In this paper, we analyzed the spatial–temporal patterns of overstory oak tree mortality in China Camp State Park, CA over 4 years using the point patterns mapped from high spatial resolution remotely sensed imagery. Both univariate and multivariate spatial point pattern analyses were performed with special considerations paid to the spatial trends illustrated in the mapped point patterns. In univariate spatial point pattern analyses, we investigated inhomogeneousK-functions and Neyman–Scott point processes to characterize and model the spatial dependence among dead oak trees in each year. The results showed that the point patterns of dead oak trees are significantly clustered at different scales and spatial extents through time; and that both the extent and the scale of the clustering patterns decrease with time. In multivariate spatial point pattern analyses, we developed two simulation methods to test the spatial–temporal dependence among dead oak trees over time and the spatial dependence between dead oak trees and California bay trees, an important host for the pathogen. The results showed that new dead oak trees tend to be located within up to 300 m of past dead oak trees; and that a strong spatial association between oak tree mortality and California bay trees exists 150 m away. Sudden oak death (SOD), caused by Phytophthora ramorum, is killing oaks and tanoaks in the Coast Ranges of California, from Monterey County to Humboldt County. In March 2000, 20 disease progression plots were established in Marin County, California, to characterize the progress of disease symptoms, and to determine the fidelity of the association of three or more bark and ambrosia beetle species (Coleoptera: Scolytidae) with diseased oaks and tanoaks. Symptoms of sudden oak death and signs of associated organisms were recorded from coast live oaks (Quercus agrifolia), California black oaks (Q. kelloggii), valley oaks (Q. lobata), and tanoaks (Lithocarpus densiflorus), four times per year, from March 2000 through March 2003. Symptoms and signs in Q. agrifolia progressed from bleeding, to infestation by scolytid beetles, to the development of fruiting structures of the fungus Hypoxylon thouarsianum. Mortality of symptomatic trees increased from 2000 to 2003 as follows: Q. agrifolia (n = 668), 5.8‐17.4%; Q. kelloggii (n = 53), 3.8‐9.4%; and L. densiflorus (n = 164), 8.3‐22.2%. All 31 Q. lobata remained asymptomatic. From 2000 to 2003, bleeding trees were 25.0‐23.6% of living Q. agrifolia, 15.5‐25.0% of Q. kelloggii, and 39.0‐62.4% of L. densiflorus. Scolytid beetles colonized more than 95% of the living symptomatic Q. agrifolia that subsequently died. Same-symptom cohorts were followed from March 2000 through March 2003. In the asymptomatic Q. agrifolia cohort, 12.0% developed bleeding by 2003. For the bleeding only cohort, 22.7% of Q. agrifolia died, but 73.5% of the beetle-colonized bleeding cohort died. Bleeding developed in 40.9% of the initially asymptomatic L. densiflorus cohort. By 2003, 24.6% of the initially bleeding L. densiflorus cohort had died.
