The Kelvin-Helmholtz Instability (KHI) is a large scale convective instability which occurs anywhere the velocity shear between two fluids is large, such as Earth’s magnetopause where the fast flowing magnetosheath abuts the relatively stagnant outer magnetosphere. The KHI was initially believed to contribute only to energy and momentum transfer from the solar wind to the magnetosphere, but was eventually shown to support mass transport and plasma heating. Recent advancements in in-situ observational capabilities and high scale computer modeling have once again shifted our understanding of the KHI from a large scale process, to an active environment which connects the global and kinetic scales through a variety of multi-scale processes and phenomena. In this mini-review, we provide an update on the latest findings in Kelvin-Helmholtz (KH) related processes at kinetic scales and the effects of the global environment on KH development.

Imaging missions in Earth Science, Heliophysics, and Astrophysics have made fundamental advancements in science and have helped to further our understanding of our natural environment. Here we review the Solar-Terrestrial Observer for the Response of the Magnetosphere (STORM) mission concept, a global solar wind-magnetosphere imaging mission and investigate how often STORM can observe and image its key science targets; the magnetopause, ring current, and auroral oval. We introduce a novel analysis which defines STORM’s plasma targets as discrete sample points in space, these points are collectively called point groups. These point groups are used in conjunction with fields-of-view of STORM’s imagers to quantify target visibility, how often the mission can observe each of its targets. The target visibility is combined with a statistical investigation of historical solar wind and geomagnetic data, and a k-folds/Monte Carlo analysis to quantify STORM’s science visibility. That is how often specific targets can be observed during elevated solar wind and geomagnetic conditions such that detailed science investigations can be completed to address STORM’s science objectives. This analysis is further expanded to potential dual-spacecraft mission configurations to determine the nominal inter-orbit phasing which maximizes target and science visibility. Overall, we find that the target and science visibility of a single spacecraft mission is large, in the 100s and 1000s of hours/events, while the target and science visibility peak for a dual-spacecraft mission where the two spacecraft are ∼85○ out of phase.

In 1961, Dungey suggested that magnetic reconnection occurs due to the solar-terrestrial interaction. The interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) is thought to merge with Earth’s geomagnetic field (GMF). After the reconnection process the newly formed magnetic flux tube, consisting of both the IMF and GMF, moves anti-sunward. Poleward-moving auroral forms (PMAFs) are believed to be the ionospheric signatures of this process, which transfers magnetic flux from the dayside to the nightside. This paper looks at the connection between the solar wind speed and the motion of the PMAF as it moves from the auroral oval, anti-sunward, into the polar cap. PMAFs are identified using both the meridian scanning photometer (MSP) and colored all-sky camera (ASC). Once the PMAFs are identified, the PMAF-SLOPE, vα (units of degrees per time) and the angle (αPMAF) the PMAF makes with the horizontal (Time axis), in the MSP plot are calculated. These values (vα and αPMAF) are individually plotted against the vx-component of the solar wind speed and the flow speed (total solar wind speed). The plots generate linear a relationship between PMAF-SLOPEs, vα, [or PMAF angles (αPMAF)], and the vx-component of the solar wind speed (or the flow speed). A total of 57 PMAF events from 8 different days were associated with solar wind speeds (vx-component) ranging from 344 to 679 km/s. The first linear plot, between the PMAF-SLOPE and solar wind speed (vx-component), shows a high correlation: rvα=0.944. A second linear plot, between αPMAF and the solar wind speed (vx-component) shows a very high correlation: rαPMAF=0.973. The conclusions obtained from this statistical study are: 1) both the PMAF-SLOPE vα and αPMAF are highly correlated to the vx-component of the solar wind, increasing when vx increases and vice versa, 2) PMAFs must be connected to both the IMF and GMF and are dragged anti-sunward, mostly by the vx-component of the solar wind, and 3) PMAFs are indeed the ionospheric footprints of a newly formed magnetic flux tube, due to dayside magnetic reconnection, being transferred from the dayside to nightside.

A recently published analysis of current sheets has updated the classic Harris 1D static solution by considering multiple classes of charged particle trajectories in a generalized and dynamic current sheet. It uses a 1D PIC simulation to describe dynamic pinching and bifurcation of the current sheet. These 1D results strongly suggest that properties of the inflowing plasma, including the plasma beta, have an important effect on the equilibrium thickness of the pinched current sheet. Since 1D studies cannot describe magnetic reconnection, the time appears right to carry such 1D studies over to 2D or 3D simulations to explore current sheet thickness effects on reconnection. The Magnetospheric Multiscale Mission (MMS), with its well-resolved multipoint measurements of collisionless plasma and fields, has found that collisionless reconnection is accompanied by non-adiabatic motions of electrons that only occur in magnetic structures with a narrow scale comparable to electron inertial lengths (de). The recent 1D studies suggest that a plasma pinch to such scales may only occur for inflowing magnetized plasmas with relatively low plasma beta. We conclude that a parametric exploration of simulated and observed reconnection inflow conditions, particularly plasma beta, should shed light on the enablement of reconnection in collisionless plasmas.

The protons and electrons on newly reconnected field lines exhibit time-of-flight effects that have been observed and modelled on both the dayside and nightside, at both high and low altitudes. These reconnection signatures feature proton energy distributions that are cutoff toward low energy. In LEO the cutoff energy exhibits a dispersion with latitude, typically seen in the cusp on the dayside, and referred to as velocity dispersed ion structures on the nightside. Here, an automated algorithm for detecting such low-energy cutoffs in the energy spectra of precipitating ions was developed, without regard for any possible dispersion with latitude. The occurrences of LEC ion spectra were mapped over a year of DMSP observations. There are four distinct components to this map, two of which are produced by reconnection. On the dayside LEC ion spectra are seen in cusp, mantle, and open-LLBL precipitation, predominantly at sub-keV energies, as the result of dayside reconnection. On the nightside LEC ion spectra are seen at the poleward edge of the oval at supra-keV energies (usually dispersed with latitude), that indicate magnetotail reconnection. There is another supra-keV population seen on the dusk side at the equatorward edge of the oval, possibly indicating the onset of isotropy. Finally, there is a sub-keV population seen throughout the auroral oval that is thought to consist of ions accelerated out of the opposing hemisphere. The presence of the nightside reconnection signature is modulated by magnetic activity level. Superposed epoch analyses of the ionospheric flow velocity reveal flow through the open–closed boundary when reconnection signatures are present, and enhanced upflow on the dayside when reconnection signatures are present.

There is a general consensus that fluctuations in the solar wind magnetic field and/or the Alfvenicity of the solar wind drive a solar wind-magnetosphere interaction. 11 years of hourly-averaged solar wind and magnetospheric geomagnetic indices are used to further examine this hypothesis in detail, confirming that geomagnetic activity statistically increases with the amplitude of upstream fluctuations and with the Alfvénicity, even when solar-wind reconnection driver functions are weak and reconnection on the dayside magnetopause should vanish. A comparison finds that the fluctuation-amplitude effect appears to be stronger than the Alfvénicity effect. In contradiction to the generally accepted hypothesis of driving an interaction, it is also demonstrated that many solar wind parameters are correlated with the fluctuation amplitude and the Alfvénicity. As a result, we caution against immediately concluding that the latter two parameters physically drive the overall solar-wind/magnetosphere interaction: the fluctuation amplitude and Alfvénicity could be acting as proxies for other more-relevant variables. More decisive studies are needed, perhaps focusing on the roles of ubiquitous solar-wind strong current sheets and velocity shears, which drive the measured amplitudes and Alfvénicities of the upstream solar-wind fluctuations.

This paper reports a story of developing the idea of Earthward ion flow braking in the near-Earth plasma sheet and its relationship with substorm onset processes. This idea and the data that support it are the basis for today’s two competing models for substorms: the near-Earth neutral-line model and the current disruption model. The idea was developed when the author was staying at the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics (MPE) from July 1996 to June 1997. The story addresses the colleagues and mentors who had contributed to the development of this idea. The lessons learned from this story are also summarized for students and early-career scientists for their development of new scientific ideas.

The response times of the coupled magnetosphere-ionosphere-thermosphere system are, on average, greater than the autocorrelation timescales of solar wind forcing. This means that the system is rarely, if ever, in equilibrium. Departures from equilibrium are a key component of the Expanding-Contracting Polar Cap (ECPC) model of convection excitation in both the magnetosphere and ionosphere, driven by the Dungey reconnection cycle of opening and re-closing magnetospheric field lines. Averaging over sufficiently long timescales reduces data to the equivalent of steady-state conditions, which hides the physical mechanisms involved and allows us to map electric fields from interplanetary space to the ionosphere–but this is not valid, either physically or generally, because of magnetic induction effects. Only for transient phenomena on sufficiently short timescales do the mechanisms associated with non-equilibrium fully manifest themselves. Nevertheless, because of both ever-changing solar wind conditions and Earth’s dipole tilt, eccentricity and rotation, the magnetosphere is always tending towards a perpetually-evolving equilibrium configuration and there are important implications of transient events for understanding the general behavior of the coupled magnetosphere-ionosphere-thermosphere system and its response to solar wind forcing. We here discuss one example: as a consequence of the importance of departures from equilibrium inherent in the ECPC model, the solar wind dynamic pressure PSW influences the magnetosphere-ionosphere convection response to the generation of open field lines by reconnection in the dayside subsolar magnetopause. We here demonstrate this effect in a statistical survey of observations and show that it is as predicted by the ECPC model and that, through it, PSW has an influence on flux transport in the magnetosphere-ionosphere system.

First, I will tell readers about memories of my graduate student days at Cornell. I will highlight some of my experiences there, and what I learned, and didn’t learn from them. Then I will then discuss a few of the research topics I have been working on over the years, including data interpretation and the tools for it, with special emphasis on the magnetopause. Aspects of MHD shocks and other structures, including boundary layers, are among those topics. I will mention a few people with whom I have worked closely and a few famous individuals, who influenced me in a significant way. The presentation contains material of potential interest to new, as well as more seasoned workers in the field. It will not always be in time order.

Streamer-blowout coronal mass ejections (SBO-CMEs) are the dominant CME population during solar minimum. Although they are typically slow and lack clear low-coronal signatures, they can cause geomagnetic storms. With the aid of extrapolated coronal fields and remote observations of the off-limb low corona, we study the initiation of an SBO-CME preceded by consecutive CME eruptions consistent with a multi-stage sympathetic breakout scenario. From inner-heliospheric Parker Solar Probe (PSP) observations, it is evident that the SBO-CME is interacting with the heliospheric magnetic field and plasma sheet structures draped about the CME flux rope. We estimate that 18 ± 11% of the CME’s azimuthal magnetic flux has been eroded through magnetic reconnection and that this erosion began after a heliospheric distance of ∼0.35 AU from the Sun was reached. This observational study has important implications for understanding the initiation of SBO-CMEs and their interaction with the heliospheric surroundings.

We performed high-resolution three-dimensional global MHD simulations to determine the impact of weak southward interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) (Bz = −2 nT) and slow solar wind to the Earth’s magnetosphere and ionosphere. We considered two cases of differing, uniform time resolution with the same grid spacing simulation to find any possible differences in the simulation results. The simulation results show that dayside magnetic reconnection and tail reconnection continuously occur even during the weak and steady southward IMF conditions. A plasmoid is generated on closed plasma sheet field lines. Vortices are formed in the inner side of the magnetopause due to the viscous-like interaction, which is strengthened by dayside magnetic reconnection. We estimated the dayside magnetic reconnection which occurred in relation to the electric field at the magnetopause and confirmed that the enhanced electric field is caused by the reconnection and the twisted structure of the electric field is due to the vortex. The simulation results of the magnetic field and the plasma properties show quasi-periodic variations with a period of 9–11 min between the appearances of vortices. Also the peak values of the cross-polar cap potential are both approximately 50 kV, the occurrence time of dayside reconnections are the same, and the polar cap potential patterns are the same in both cases. Thus, there are no significant differences in outcome between the two cases.

Dayside magnetic reconnection between the interplanetary magnetic field and the Earth’s magnetic field is the primary mechanism enabling mass and energy entry into the magnetosphere. During favorable solar wind conditions, multiple reconnection X-lines can form on the dayside magnetopause, potentially forming flux ropes. These flux ropes move tailward, but their evolution and fate in the tail is not fully understood. Whilst flux ropes may constitute a class of flux transfer events, the extent to which they add flux to the tail depends on their topology, which can only be measured in situ by satellites providing local observations. Global simulations allow the entire magnetospheric system to be captured at an instant in time, and thus reveal the interconnection between different plasma regions and dynamics on large scales. Using the Gorgon MHD code, we analyze the formation and evolution of flux ropes on the dayside magnetopause during a simulation of a real solar wind event. With a relatively strong solar wind dynamic pressure and southward interplanetary magnetic field, the dayside region becomes very dynamic with evidence of multiple reconnection events. The resulting flux ropes transit around the flank of the magnetosphere before eventually dissipating due to non-local reconnection. This shows that non-local effects may be important in controlling the topology of flux ropes and is a complicating factor in attempts to establish the overall contribution that flux ropes make in the general circulation of magnetic flux through the magnetosphere.

Most geomagnetic indices are associated with processes internal to the magnetosphere-ionosphere system: convection, magnetosphere-ionosphere current systems, particle pressure, ULF wave activity, etc. The saturation (or not) of various geomagnetic indices under various solar-wind driver functions (a.k.a. coupling functions) is explored by examining plots of the various indices as functions of the various driver functions. In comparing an index with a driver function, “saturation” of the index means that the trend of stronger geomagnetic activity with stronger driving weakens in going from mid-range driving to very strong driving. Issues explored are 1) whether the nature of the index matters (i.e., what the index measures and how the index measures it), 2) the relation of index saturation to cross-polar-cap potential saturation, and 3) the role of the choice of the solar-wind driver function. It is found that different geomagnetic indices exhibit different amounts of saturation. For example the SuperMAG auroral-electrojet indices SME, SML, and SMU saturate much less than do the auroral-electrojet indices AE, AL, and AU. Additionally it is found that different driver functions cause an index to show different degrees of saturation. Dividing a solar-wind driver function by the theoretical cross-polar-cap-potential correction (1+Q) often compensates for the saturation of an index, even though that index is associated with internal magnetospheric processes whereas Q is derived for solar-wind processes. There are composite geomagnetic indices E(1) that show no saturation when matched to their composite solar-wind driver functions S(1). When applied to other geomagnetic indices, the composite S(1) driver functions tend to compensate for index saturation at strong driving, but they also tend to introduce a nonlinearity at weak driving.

Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulent flows are found in the solar wind, the magnetosheath and the magnetotail plasma sheet. In this paper, we review both observational and theoretical evidence for turbulent flow in the magnetotail. MHD simulations of the global magnetosphere for southward interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) exhibit nested vortices in the earthward outflow from magnetic reconnection that are consistent with turbulence. Similar simulations for northward IMF also exhibit enhanced vorticity consistent with turbulence. These result from Kelvin-Helmholtz (KH) instabilities. However, the turbulent flows association with reconnection fill much of the magnetotail while the turbulent flows associated with the KH instability are limited to a smaller region near the magnetopause. Analyzing turbulent flows in the magnetotail is difficult because of the limited extent of the tail and because the flows there are usually sub-magnetosonic. Observational analysis of turbulent flows in the magnetotail usually assume that the Taylor frozen-in-flow hypothesis is valid and compare power spectral density vs. frequency with spectral indices derived for fluid turbulence by Kolmogorov in 1941. Global simulations carried out for actual magnetospheric substorms in the tail enable the results of the simulations to be compared directly with observed power spectra. The agreement between the two techniques provides confidence that the plasma sheet plasma is actually turbulent. The MHD results also allow us to calculate the power vs. wave number; results that also support the idea that the tail is turbulent.

An assessment of our physics-based understanding of solar-wind/magnetosphere coupling finds that the understanding is not complete. Solar-wind/magnetosphere coupling is foundational to magnetospheric physics and it is a key to comprehending and predicting space weather. We are modestly successful at correlating solar-wind variables with geomagnetic indices, but we lack the full knowledge to describe in detail how the shocked solar-wind plasma transports mass, momentum, and energy into the magnetosphere-ionosphere system and how the shocked solar wind drives geomagnetic activity and magnetospheric evolution. The controlling solar-wind factors that govern the driving of the magnetosphere-ionosphere system are not accurately known. Without this knowledge accurate predictions of the magnetospheric behavior cannot be made and no magnetosphere-ionosphere model will work correctly if it is driven incorrectly. Further, without a fundamental understanding, the prediction of the system reaction to some as-yet-unseen extreme solar-wind conditions will not be possible. In this perspective article several gaps in our knowledge are cataloged. The deficiencies in our physical understanding of solar-wind/magnetosphere coupling constitute a major unsolved problem for space physics (and for astrophysics), a problem that demands enhanced, coordinated research.

The progress of space physics is reviewed from my personal point of view, particularly how I have reached my present understanding of auroral substorms and geomagnetic storms from the time of the earliest days of space physics. This review is somewhat unique in two ways. First of all, instead of taking the magnetic field line approach (including magnetic reconnection), I have taken the electric current approach; it consists of power supply (dynamo), transmission (currents/circuits), and dissipation (auroral/magnetospheric substorms). This is the basic way to study electromagnetic phenomena and it is much more instructive in understanding the physics involved in the chain processes. Secondly, this is not a textbook-like review, but it is hoped that my humble experience may be useful to see how a new science of space physics has evolved with a number of controversies. On the other hand, it can be seen that the electric current approach is still in a very rudiment stage. Thus, new generations of researchers are most welcome in taking this new way of studying auroral/magnetospheric substorms and geomagnetic storms.

This paper describes a short story of how I learned in early days in space physics (1960–1970) that there are the direct and feed-back relationships between geomagnetic storms and auroral/magnetospheric substorms. In those days, both geomagnetic storms and auroral substorms were almost independent subjects. It is now understood that auroral substorms are directly related to the development of the ring current and thus of the main phase of geomagnetic storms. Further, we have begun to recognize that the growth of the ring current (caused by auroral/magnetospheric substorms) will change the internal structure of the magnetosphere, which in turn will change and could modify at least the intensity of auroral substorms. Thus, there are interesting feed-back processes between them. It is expected that this feed-back relationship between geomagnetic storms and auroral/magnetospheric substorms will become one of the major issues in magnetospheric physics in the future. In fact, an effort to understand this relationship will deepen our understanding of both geomagnetic storms and auroral/magnetospheric substorms. The progress in understanding the relationship between auroral substorms and geomagnetic storms is an example, in which it takes a long time to advance even one step. It is hoped that this paper will serve to learn the background in the development of space physics in the early days.
