Abstract: Korea has been developing a helium cooled solid breeder (HCSB) TBM of which unique feature is that the amount of beryllium multiplier is reduced by replacing some of it with graphite reflector. Its components have thermo-hydraulic and thermo-mechanical design requirements for the associated thermal loads since the TBM should handle severe surface heat flux from the plasma as well as volumetric heat generation by neutron wall loading. In this paper, results of thermo-hydraulic and thermo-mechanical analyses are presented for the Korean HCSB TBM. To investigate that the TBM components are effectively cooled below the allowable temperature, thermo-hydraulic calculation was performed using the three-dimensional TBM model. Thermo-mechanical computations were then carried out using the surface temperature data obtained from the thermo-hydraulic simulation. The computational results show that the current TBM design is reasonable under the ITER normal condition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
