Vietnam's offshore fishing industry remains a space dominated by men, with fish work being tied to notions of what it means to be a man. This paper uses interviews data and participant observation to assess the ways in which masculinities shape and are shaped by labour relations in offshore fishing in Southern Vietnam. Findings show that labour relations are maintained through an emphasis on the abilities of men to do difficult physical work, behavioural expectations associated with masculine norms, and a homosocial bonding culture at sea, in addition to a bonding culture on land that involves drinking and women as entertainment. Multiple masculinities are identified with varying degrees of fluidity as informed especially by class and with dynamics differing at sea versus on land. In a context of fish stock decline and international pressure for strict fisheries reform, efforts to sustain an offshore fishing workforce rely, in part, on the reproduction of a particular local hierarchy of masculinities. The aspirations of young people provide a lens to examine the performance of gendered and classed privilege. While current research tends to focus on working class men, the role of privilege in shaping aspirations, understood as a socially and economically mediated navigational capacity, often remains unmarked. Drawing on aspirations articulated by boys attending elite private schools in Auckland, New Zealand, this paper explores narratives of young people's aspirations for the future in terms of education, employment, and social networks. A belief in a right to aspire to achieve emerges, revealing how the performance of gender and class norms contributes to the reproduction of privilege. The intersectional nature of privilege is also highlighted, as while discourses of masculinity pervade understandings of being and becoming, class is an overriding factor influencing the performance of privilege through aspirations. The paper concludes by outlining a notion of nascent elite masculinity. It is contended that examining the performance of nascent elite masculinity at elite private schools is a means to expose the operation and reproduction of systems of privilege. The role of place is undertheorized in the literature on intersectional social movements; this study uses Atlanta, Georgia as an exemplary case study of how the characteristics of geographical areas shape the possibilities for intersectional social movement organizing. Atlanta is home to a rare trend of men's gender justice groups that organize around one or more additional intersecting identities (e.g. race, sexuality, religion). Across the country there are groups like Men Can Stop Rape and Men Against Sexual Violence, but Atlanta has Black Men for the Eradication of Sexism, Muslim Men Against Domestic Violence (MMADV), and the Sweet Tea Southern Queer Men's Collective. Based on a year of participant-observation and interviews with MMADV and Sweet Tea, this paper illustrates how local grassroots activism is shaped by four types of interweaving place-based factors: demographic, geographic, cultural, and institutional. By enabling necessary precursors, these factors combine to create an environment where multiple intersectionally-organized men's gender justice groups could form, independently of each other, despite being extremely uncommon elsewhere in the country. The article develops a model for theorizing about intersectionality, space and place, social movements and activism, and contemporary feminism, as well as contributing to knowledge about activism in the understudied context of the Southern city. Over the past decade, incidents of rape, sexual discrimination, honour killing, acid attacks and sex-related murders in Indian cities have come under much media and public scrutiny, significantly impacting conceptions of gender, risk and women's safety in urban spaces. The city itself has become a dominant trope for underscoring the anxieties, discourses and exegeses of sexual violence, as exemplified in the oft-cited designation of Delhi as the 'rape capital of India'. This introduction to the themed section critically engages with 'the urban' in its attempts to understand sexual violence in India, and focuses on the multiple public (workplace, leisure, street lives) and private (domestic, intimate) arenas of urban life where sexual violence is encountered, and the resources they provide to counter it. The co-editors engage with the interdisciplinary research papers by contributing authors that show how sexual violence is '(en)countered' in women's right-wing politics, processes of cultural production, community health activism, experiences of aggressive relationships, and men's growing anxieties about women's self-determination in Indian cities. With a specific ethnographic emphasis on women's experiences, rhetoric, representation and resistance to harassment, the theme section analyses sexual violence through the lens of urban, social and spatial transformations in the region. In this article we connect migration for waged work in post-industrial economies and debates about work-life balance. Migrant workers undertake much of the service sector work which makes others' work-life balance possible and yet their own work-life balance negotiations are often neglected. We use the narratives of migrants working in London's healthcare and hospitality sector collected in semi-structured interviews to begin to address this omission. The workers we talked to engaged in diverse and complex negotiations and strategies to balance paid work and their caring responsibilities. We consider what these workers' experiences reveal about the adult worker model, which underpins contemporary workfare policy and framings of the appropriate balance between productive and reproductive work, arguing that it is left looking overly simplistic and morally wanting. This article draws upon research with 60 white lesbian and gay parents from working-class and middle-class backgrounds, to consider the significance of class in the struggle for sexual citizenship in the context of the UK Civil Partnership Act (2004). While parenting is distinct from issues of partnering they are clearly related, not least in the ways that such policies themselves materialise families, offering new possibilities for societal recognition, legal recourse and access to welfare services. The issue of economics is significant, resourcing - or denying - various possibilities; class and sexuality also intersect in the construction of 'normal', 'ordinary' citizens now ready for inclusion. Many interviewees experienced this shifting terrain ambivalently, though a consequential classing of this figures in the erosion or consolidation of 'worth', 'normality' and 'entitlement', through which claims are made, families are (un)done and citizens are materialised. Both working-class and middle-class interviewees expressed varied uncertainties but the material and subjective 'costs', rather than benefits, of civic acceptance work to disadvantage working-class parents. The advantages of middle-class parents are re-constituted and re-embedded in changing legal contexts. The classing of sexual citizenship has potential implications across different international contexts, where public policies materialise parenting, spatially situating and legally producing the 'costs' and benefits of civic acceptance. This article explores the ways in which American college women of South Asian descent discuss their positioning as middle class. The article analyses participants' talk around class as evidence of embeddedness in American class discourses and a complex and contradictory scheme of identification that implicates other identities like gender, race and culture. Respondents often articulated class using the American Dream, where the social capital their parents immigrated with is left unexamined in favour of a narrative of 'rags to riches'. Young women also used other constructs like 'stability', 'race' and 'resources' to make reference to class, but also to participate in an American discursive silence around it. Finally, the notion of a drive towards professionalism as an immigrant goal is examined, and it is suggested that this serves to further deflect discussions of class. This article synthesises theories of diaspora, 'translocational positioning' and habitus, and examines the production of American class discourse as a performance of an American middle class habitus. Pessimistic accounts of women's lives in post-communist Poland view women as powerless and passive victims of the transformation process. In contrast, this article argues that while political change and the restructuring of the economy have closed down some spaces of articulation and organisation, others have opened up. The article focuses on the way in which women in their spheres of work are shaping and actively resisting change through new organisations and individual and collective actions, which are in some ways a break with the past, but in other ways build on previous forms of activity. The work draws on qualitative research conducted over the last decade across Poland. This has coupled extensive interviews with women workers, national and regional trade union leaders, activists and feminists in a number of major Polish cities with reviews of Polish media and policy. We examine the economic and ideological context in which these new articulations are taking place, against the background of Poland's post-war communism and the rise of opposition movements. We look at the neoliberal restructuring of the economy and the implications for women within the labour market and in their domestic lives. In particular, we examine initiatives from below in workplace organisation, by focusing on new unions and new actions in the public sector, and the beginnings of organisation in the new areas of the economy such as supermarkets. Finally, we look at how women are articulating their interests beyond formal workplaces. We conclude that we should be optimistic about these new spaces of activism. While some are well established, others are embryonic but provide a strong foundation on which women can increase their participation in spaces that promote their varied interests.
