Landslides involving sensitive clays are recurrent events in the world's northern regions and are especially notorious in eastern Canada. The two critical factors that separate sensitive clay landslides from traditional slope stability analysis are the highly brittle behavior in undrained conditions (strain-softening) characteristic of progressive or retrogressive failures and the large deformations associated with them. Conventional limit equilibrium analysis has numerous shortcomings in incorporating these characteristics when assessing landslides in sensitive clays. This paper presents an extensive literature review of the failure mechanics characteristics of landslides in sensitive clays and the existing constitutive models and numerical tools to analyze such slopes' stability and post-failure behavior. The advantages and shortcomings of the different techniques to incorporate strain-softening and large deformation in the numerical modeling of sensitive clay landslides are assessed. The literature review depicts that elastoviscoplastic soil models with non-linear strain-softening laws and rate effects represent the material behavior of sensitive clays. Though several numerical models have been proposed to analyze post-failure runouts, the amount of work performed in line with sensitive clay landslides is very scarce. Landslide risk analysis is a common geotechnical evaluation and it aims to protect life and infrastructure. In the case of sensitive clay zones, landslides can affect large areas and are difficult to predict. Here we propose a methodology to determine the landslide hazard across a large territory, and we apply our approach to the Saint-Jean-Vianney area, Quebec, Canada. The initial step consists of creating a 3D model of the surficial deposits of the target area. After creating a chart of the material electrical resistivity adapted for eastern Canada, we applied electric induction to interpret the regional soil. We transposed parameter values obtained from the laboratory to a larger scale, that is to a regional slope using the results of a back analysis undertaken earlier, on a smaller slide within the same area. The regional 3D model of deposits is then used to develop a zonation map of slopes that are at risk and their respective constraint areas with the study region. This approach allowed us to target specific areas where a more precise stability analysis would be required. Geotechnical studies are carried out to investigate the location and magnitude of a prehistoric earthquake in eastern Canada. Previous studies identified 12 sensitive clay landslides of about 1020 cal BP in the Ottawa-Gatineau region, including one of the most disastrous slope failures in eastern Canada. The landslides were hypothesized to have been triggered by an earthquake. In the current study, three of those landslides are investigated to understand their failure mechanisms. The study sites form a triangle of lateral distances of about 38, 38 and 35 km. Micro-seismic surveys, cone penetrometer tests, vane shear tests, soil sampling and laboratory testing are conducted to collect geotechnical data. Slope stability models are constructed to calculate threshold ground accelerations required to trigger the landslides. The ground accelerations are used with Ground-Motion Prediction Equations to triangulate the earthquake. The results indicate an earthquake of a minimum moment magnitude of 5.9 near Eardley, Quebec. Background: We examined seven landslide dams and their changes over time in the Peace River region of Canada. These landslides had subchannel rupture surfaces in glacial and glaciolacustrine sediments. We assessed the stability of the dams using 6 separate, morphometric-based stability indices (with a total of 10 stability thresholds). Results: The landslides caused the streambeds to be elevated from 4 to 30 m forming the dams. The landslide lakes diminished in size over one to several years through stream incision into the dams and sediment infilling. The longest-lived dam persisted for up to 20 years. For two dams, incision into the dams lowered the lake levels by about half of the total depth, while the remainder of the water in the basins was displaced by sediment infilling. After the lakes drain, the sediment accumulations behind the dams can persist for decades. The stability analyses overpredicted unstable conditions which is inconsistent with the observed longterm persistence of the dams. Conclusions: The landslide dams in our study were relatively stable. Their lakes persisted for up to 2 decades and diminished over time through a combination of slow incision and basin infilling. The stability indices we assessed overpredicted unstable conditions and thus would require modification for these particular types of dams in this regional setting. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
