It is evident that the Yangtze Craton was involved in the formation and breakup of the Columbia supercontinent. However, due to the scarcity of Mesoproterozoic geological records and reliable paleomagnetic data, little is known about the timing, paleogeographic position, and geological processes of the Yangtze Craton. We conducted detailed geological mapping, petrographic, geochemical, and in situ zircon U-Pb and Lu-Hf isotopic investigations on newly recognized Mesoproterozoic quartz syenite and monzogranite in the Dabie orogen, northern Yangtze Craton. The results show that the quartz syenite and the monzogranite were emplaced at 1369 ± 12 Ma and 1372 ± 5 Ma, respectively. Both rocks are high in total alkali (K2O + Na2O) content and FeOt/(FeOt + MgO), with elevated diagnostic 10,000*Ga/Al ratios and Zr + Nb + Ce + Y concentrations, and enrichment in light rare earth elements. They are also depleted in heavy rare earth elements with significant negative Eu anomalies but remarkably low Sr, Cr, and Ni contents. These compositions define affinity to A1-type granite. In addition, the quartz syenite displays variable zircon Hf and homogeneous whole-rock Nd isotopic compositions with positive εHf(t) values of +0.7 to +5.7 (average +2.4) and εNd(t) values of -0.1 to +2.5 (average +1.0). In contrast, the monzogranite has homogeneous zircon Hf and whole-rock Nd isotopic compositions with negative εHf(t) values of -5.7 to -2.6 (average -4.8) and εNd(t) values of -3.5 to -1.5 (average -2.2). We propose that the quartz syenite was likely generated by the partial melting of juvenile, crust-derived melt with involvement of minor mantle-derived material, while the monzogranite was likely derived from the partial melting of ancient crust in an extensional tectonic regime (e.g., continental rift). Based on the newly recognized ca. 1.37 Ga granitic magmatism and previously reported magmatic events, we argue that the mid-Mesoproterozoic (ca. 1.37 Ga) magmatism in the Yangtze Craton occurred in response to the breakup of Columbia, and represents the separation of the Yangtze Craton from Columbia. Furthermore, according to comparable magmatic and sedimentary events, we propose that the Yangtze Craton, along with central Hainan Island, may have been linked to northwestern Laurentia, southwestern Siberia, and northeastern Australia during 1.6-1.4 Ga. A new tectonic model is presented to explain the tectono-stratigraphic evolution of the Paleoproterozoic Karrat Group in central West Greenland and the polyphase deformation, magmatism, and metamorphism of the Rinkian orogen. Sedimentation of the Karrat Group initiated after ca. 2000 Ma in an intracratonic rift basin with basal quartzites overlying Archean gneisses of the Rae craton. Rift-related alkaline volcanic rocks and synrift siliciclastic sediments were deposited in the north while an evaporite-carbonate platform developed in the south. The rift basin evolved to a back-arc basin, with associated subalkaline volcanic rocks, concomitant with the intrusion of arc-related granitoids of the Prøven igneous complex along the basal contact of the Karrat Group between 1900 Ma and 1850 Ma. The Karrat Group and magmatic arc rocks underwent metamorphism ca. 1830-1800 Ma during the collisional phase of the Rinkian orogeny. The metamorphic grade of the Karrat Group increases from greenschist facies in the south to granulite facies in the north, where it is marked by migmatization and emplacement of S-type leucogranites. Extensive east-southeastward thrust emplacement and fold vergence characterize the Rinkian orogen south of the Prøven igneous complex magmatic arc, where the arc-continent collision is established along a top-to-the-ESE shear zone postdating the Rinkian metamorphism. In summary, the Karrat Basin developed on the upper plate above eastward-dipping subduction and, together with the Rinkian orogen, represents the result of arc-continent collision that initiated the structuring of a backarc fold-and-thrust system antithetic to the subduction system. Composite Ni-Cu sulfide- and Fe-Ti oxide-bearing mafic-ultramafic intrusions have been discovered in convergent margin settings worldwide, but their origins remain enigmatic. Permian Kebu mafic-ultramafic intrusion in the Central Asian Orogenic Belt hosts both Ni-Cu sulfide and Fe-Ti oxide mineralization and formed in a post-collisional, Andean-style arc setting. The Ni-Cu sulfide- and Fe-Ti oxide-bearing rocks in the intrusion have similarly arc-like trace element patterns on the primitive mantle-normalized trace element diagram and negative εNd(t) values (-16 to -5), which indicate that the parental magma of the intrusion may have been derived from the enriched, metasomatized lithospheric mantle. The magma oxygen fugacity (fO2) was calculated to be FMQ + 1.3~FMQ + 2.0, which can be attributed to the evolution of hydrated parental magma derived from the metasomatized lithospheric mantle. Also, the rocks all have negative δ13C values (-28.5‰ to -20‰), which indicates incorporation of external-derived crustal organic carbon into magmas. However, the Ni-Cu sulfide-bearing rocks contain more high-temperature carbon than the Fe-Ti oxide-bearing rocks. Modeling results based on alphaMELTS show that the magmas forming the Ni-Cu sulfide-bearing rocks may have assimilated more organic carbon than those that formed the Fe-Ti oxide-bearing rocks. Based on the estimated amounts of organic carbon in the two types of rocks, we deduced that initially oxidized magma pulses may have been reduced in variable degrees, leading to the formation of composite Ni-Cu sulfide and Fe-Ti oxide mineralization in one intrusive body. Mafic magmas in subduction-related, convergent margin settings are commonly highly oxidized due to metasomatism of the mantle wedge by slab-derived fluids/melts, and this may explain why the mafic-ultramafic intrusions associated with composite Ni-Cu sulfide and Fe-Ti oxide mineralization often occur in convergent margin settings. Syncollisional magmatism plays an important but underappreciated role in continental crust growth and maturation. However, the origin of syncollisional intermediate magmas in continental subduction zones is controversial, with some models suggesting they form by arc-related processes, and others indicating they form by later slab breakoff-induced melting. Diorite porphyry dikes intruding granitic gneiss in the Paleo-Tethyan Sulu ultrahigh-pressure (UHP) continental collisional orogen have inherited zircon grains with 206Pb/238U ages of ca. 749-238 Ma, and magmatic zircons with weighted mean ages of 216-215 Ma, falling within the well-constrained time range (ca. 235-208 Ma) tracking exhumation of the Sulu UHP rocks from UHP peak conditions to amphibolite facies; they are thus syncollisional. The dikes have high Cr (330-402 ppm), Ni (84.5-103 ppm), and Mg# (64-66) values, showing a mantle origin. The porphyries have relatively high Sm/Yb, Nb/Y, La/Yb, and Gd/Yb ratios, representing a classic signature of slab breakoff magmatism. Together with the arc-like traceelement patterns and enriched Sr-Nd isotope compositions, ages, and εHf(t) values (-19.5 to -17.0) of magmatic zircons and their tectonic setting, we propose a syncollisional slab breakoff model in which the melts were initially generated from asthenospheric upwelling in the gap created when the oceanic slab attached to the Yangtze craton detached underneath the North China craton during Late Triassic collision following Paleo-Tethys Ocean closure. The diorite porphyry dikes have consistent Sr-Nd isotope compositions and spatiotemporal relationships with the nearby Shidao gabbro-syenite-granite complex, for which the tectonic affinity is controversial. Thus, we argue that the diorite porphyries and Shidao complex were sourced from two cratons, including the enriched subcontinental lithospheric mantle of the North China craton, which interacted with abundant felsic melts derived from the sinking slab breaking away from the subducted crust of the Yangtze continental-ocean transitional margin. This study sheds new light on crustal recycling versus continental growth in collisional orogens and implies that considerable syncollisional intermediate magmas can be generated by slab breakoff in continental subduction zones, representing hybrid additions to continental growth that are different and more evolved than arc magmas and have a composition similar to that of the bulk continental crust. Exhumed (ultra)high-pressure ([U]HP) metamorphic rocks are markers of paleosubduction zones and can provide crucial implications for the geodynamic evolution of subduction-exhumation. A variety of (U)HP metamorphic rocks from many collisional orogens have commonly documented a lowpressure high-temperature overprint, which appears to indicate a pervasive geodynamic process behind (U)HP metamorphic rock exhumation. A good case study of garnet amphibolite and associated garnet-biotite gneiss with an unambiguous low-pressure high-temperature overprint in the Xixia-Xiaguan area of the North Qinling Orogen, central China, provides a significant opportunity to uncover this geodynamic process. A detailed study of petrography, mineral chemistry, and phase equilibria modeling suggests that the investigated garnet amphibolite and garnet-biotite gneiss have jointly experienced multistage exhumation processes with near-isothermal decompression from the (U)HP eclogite facies (26.8-29.0 kbar/740-775 °C) to the mediumpressure (MP) amphibolite facies (8.7-10.0 kbar/740-775 °C), subsequent remarkable near-isobaric heating to the low-pressure (LP) granulite facies (6.8-8.2 kbar/832-835 °C), followed by final decompression and cooling to the LP amphibolite facies (5.8-6.8 kbar/740-757 °C). U-Pb age dating of zircons from the garnet amphibolite and garnetbiotite gneiss yielded metamorphic ages of ca. 500 Ma, 450 Ma, and 400 Ma, which we consider to represent (U)HP eclogite-facies, LP granulite-facies, and late LP amphibolite-facies metamorphism, respectively. According to the regional geology and the metamorphic history we have determined, this multistage exhumation process of twostep exhumation stages delimited by a phase of LP near-isobaric heating was associated with slab rollback. Accordingly, we propose a tectonic model of exhumation driven by slab rollback for the geodynamic evolution of (U)HP metamorphic rock exhumation in the North Qinling Orogen. Additionally, a combination of previous studies and our new results suggests that exhumation driven by slab rollback appears to be a fundamental mechanism for the (U)HP metamorphic rock exhumation within collisional orogens. The timing of deformation within and adjacent to the Helena salient of west-central Montana is poorly constrained relative to other segments of the Sevier fold-and-thrust belt. This study presents low-temperature thermochronology data from the Little Belt Mountains, a basement-cored Laramide uplift that is juxtaposed with the leading edge of the salient. We analyzed eight samples of Paleoproterozoic basement for apatite fissiontrack (AFT) and zircon (U-Th)/He (ZHe) thermochronology. Four samples yielded AFT ages ranging from ca. 80 Ma to 73 Ma and associated long, unimodal confined track lengths, indicating rapid cooling and exhumation of Little Belt Mountains basement during the Late Cretaceous. The other four samples are characterized by younger AFT ages (ca. 55 Ma), which suggest a combination of prolonged residence in the apatite partial annealing zone and postexhumation magmatic reheating. In total, 20 new ZHe dates range from ca. 236 Ma to 28 Ma and show a correlation between date and effective uranium. Forward model results for ZHe data are consistent with upper-crustal residence during the Proterozoic followed by Phanerozoic burial and rapid Late Cretaceous cooling. Cross sections across the Little Belt Mountains display the geometry of the Volcano Valley fault zone, an array of down-to-the-south Proterozoic normal faults that profoundly influenced the development of the Cordilleran thrust belt. Our new constraints from the Little Belt Mountains when integrated with published kinematic constraints from the Helena salient reveal significant out-of-sequence deformation in this portion of the thrust belt between ca. 80 Ma and 55 Ma. A kinematic model is proposed that involves Late Cretaceous (ca. 80 Ma) exploitation of rheologically incompetent units at the base of the Belt Supergroup within the Helena Embayment, facilitating early exhumation in the Little Belt Mountains. Our new data and synthesis are consistent with previous interpretations in which an inherited stratigraphic and structural architecture of Proterozoic ancestry was the predominant control on the development of the Helena salient during Cretaceous-early Eocene time. To understand the orogenic cyclicity that built the northern Yili magmatic arc in the southern Balhkash-Yili arc of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt, we synthesize its tectono-magmatic processes using new and existing U-Pb geochronological dates (228), Hf-in-zircon (1605 spots), bulk-rock geochemical data (1458), and Sr-Nd isotopic analyses (461) of magmatic rocks. Based on temporal-spatial distribution of magmatic rocks and their geochemical composition, four magmatic episodes (ca. 470-440 Ma, 420-380 Ma, 350-320 Ma, and 300-260 Ma) punctuated by a magmatic gap (ca. 440-420 Ma) and two high-flux magmatic pulses (ca. 380-350 Ma and 320-300 Ma) were recognized. These episodic magmatic processes are proposed to be dynamically associated with changes in configuration of the subducted Junggar oceanic slab, including 470-440 Ma initial subduction, 440-420 Ma flat subduction, 420-380 Ma retreating subduction, 380-350 Ma advancing subduction, and 350-320 Ma retreating subduction, followed by slab break-off in ca. 320-300 Ma and subsequent lithospheric delamination in a postcollisional setting during the Permian (ca. 300-260 Ma). In addition, tectonic transition (ca. 380 Ma and 320 Ma) from extension to compression were suggested to be closely related to the two phases of porphyry Cu mineralization events in the Balkhash-Yili arc. High crustal thickness and more mature arc evolution with prominent crust-mantle interaction may be responsible for the significant porphyry Cu endowment in the northern Balkhash-Yili arc. Sparse eclogite exposure in accretionaryto-collisional orogens cannot only reveal the sites of ancient subduction zones and plate boundaries, but also elucidate the multistage tectonic evolution in the Wilson cycle. The southern part of the Dora-Maira Massif in the Western Alps is well known for its ultrahigh-pressure (UHP) rocks and contains small occurrences of petrographically distinct types of eclogite. Due to the lack of detailed geochronological and geochemical data on these rocks, the nature of their protolith and related geodynamic setting has remained unknown. In the current study, 33 samples from 13 localities were studied by wholerock major- and trace-element analysis, and a selection of the samples were studied using Sr-Nd-Hf isotopes, as well as high-resolution elemental mapping and U-Pb geochronology of zircon. According to macroscopic appearance, petrography, chemical composition, and principal-component analysis of multielements, two major types are distinguished. Light-colored eclogite is phengite-rich, commonly foliated, bears kyanite and quartz/coesite, shows relatively high MgO, K2O, SiO2, εNd(t) (-2.2 to +1.4), and εHf(t) (+3.5 to +7), with a protolith geochemically similar to an enriched-type mid-oceanic-ridge basalt (E-MORB). Dark eclogite generally is massive, rutile-rich, shows higher values of Ti, Fe, P, Nb, and Zr, εNd(t) values between -2.8 and -0.8, εHf(t) values between -6.1 and -3.2, with an oceanic island basalt (OIB)-type protolith composition. Magmatic zircon cores, which are characterized by steep heavy rare earth element (HREE) patterns and negative Eu anomalies, yield consistent protolith ages of ca. 253-252 Ma in both eclogite types. Metamorphic zircon domains with flat HREE patterns and insignificant Eu anomalies yield a younger mean age of ca. 34 Ma, which is the age commonly assigned to eclogite-facies UHP metamorphism. Considering the various geochemical signatures of E-MORB-to OIB-like eclogites and the regional tectonic evolution, their protolith is best explained as rocks, which crystallized from rift-related basaltic magma, associated with the break-up of the Pangea Supercontinent that eventually resulted in the birth of the Piemonte-Liguria Ocean (Alpine Tethys Ocean) between the future Eurasia and Adria plates. Therefore, the UHP eclogites in the Dora-Maira Massif likely fingerprint a multi-stage tectonic evolution from divergent (continental extension, rifting) to convergent (subduction zone) plate boundary, corresponding to the beginning and end of a Wilson cycle. Incidentally, they reveal that mafic rocks in the Alpine basement units may not be polymetamorphic, but may actually consist of post-Variscan products that underwent only Alpine metamorphism. Detrital zircon provenance analysis plays a key role in reconstructions of past tectonic and sedimentary environments. However, non-unique (or even erroneous) interpretations can be introduced due to the inherent limitations of both zircon provenance analysis (fertility bias, recycling) and those of single-proxy provenance systems in general. Apatite crystallizes in a wider range of lithologies than zircon, and can thus facilitate more detailed source reconstructions. In this study, detrital apatite analysis of Cryogenian to Ordovician sandstones in the Cathaysia Block was carried out in comparison with detrital zircon data for a better understanding of the source-sink process on the northern margin of Gondwana. In contrast to the abundant Grenvillian (1300-900 Ma) detrital zircons of igneous origin, detrital apatites show major Pan-African (650-500 Ma) age peaks that are mostly derived from metamorphic rocks (52%-72%). The apatite data show that the Cathaysia Block mainly received detritus from western Australia and India during the late Neoproterozoic to early Paleozoic, with much lower affinities to East Antarctica and the terranes of Iran-Turkey. Provenance variations include a shift with time in the major age populations from ca. 900 Ma to 600 Ma with a decrease in metamorphic apatite (from 72% to 52% of all grains) in the late Cryogenian, an increase in high-grade metamorphic apatite (from 27% to 56%) in the late Ediacaran-Cambrian, and an increase in igneous apatite (from 33% to 45% of all grains) in the Early Ordovician. In contrast, detrital zircon data could only reveal the source change in the late Ediacaran. These provenance switches were likely caused by the unroofing of Pan-African orogens (640-490 Ma) and subsequent erosion of their exposed cores, due to the rapid uplift of source rocks formed in the Pan-African orogens during the Gondwana assembly. Lamprophyres are spatially and temporally widespread in continental belts, but their magmatic differentiation process and melting dynamic mechanisms remain subjects of debate. In this study, we report mineral chemistry, bulk-rock compositions, and Sr-Nd-O isotopes of the alkaline lamprophyres (including monchiquite and camptonite) from the Tuoyun Basin of the southwestern Central Asian Orogenic Belt. Based on the P-T estimates, transcrustal magmatic reservoirs from the lower crust to upper crust are revealed for monchiquite and camptonite. These magmatic reservoirs were potentially connected, and the magmatic recharge and mixing processes that occurred were recorded by zoned clinopyroxene and amphibole. The diverse crystal populations are suggested to have originated from multiple batches of magmas, which were then involved in forming the subsequent magmas. The Sr-Nd isotopic compositions are relatively depleted, with (87Sr/86Sr)i = 0.70390-0.70452 and εNd(t) = 5.46-6.49 for the monchiquite, while the values for camptonite are 0.70391-0.70463 and 4.71-5.02. Moreover, the olivine in situ O isotopes in the monchiquite show Î'18OV-SMOW values of 4.81‰-5.40‰, which are comparable to those of the mantle peridotite. Compared with the experimental melts, a hybridized mantle source of hydrous peridotite + silica-depleted pyroxenite is proposed, and partial melting of this component was induced by the upwelling asthenosphere. Transpressional shear zones commonly occur in ancient and modern convergent plate boundaries to accommodate oblique plate convergence. The early Paleozoic Qilian orogen in northeastern Tibet records the subduction of Proto-Tethyan Ocean lithosphere and the accretion-collision of various magmatic arcs and continental terranes. This study focused on the Datong ductile shear zone, which represents the central part of the WNW-ESE-striking ductile shear zone along the northern margin of the Qilian block in the Qilian orogen. This structure bears key information about the evolution of oblique convergence during the early Paleozoic orogeny. The kinematics and timing of the Datong ductile shear zone were investigated via fieldbased, microstructural, and mica 40Ar/39Ar dating analyses. Mesostructural and microstructural data showed predominantly dextral strike-slip shearing within the Datong ductile shear zone. Microstructural features and quartz c-axis crystallographic preferred orientation patterns indicated that dextral ductile shearing occurred under lower-amphibolite-facies conditions (~500-550 °C and ~5.6 kbar) within the shear zone. Microstructures of quartz showed subgrain rotation (SGR) and grain boundary migration (GBM), suggesting dislocation creep-dominated deformation. A strain rate of 10-12 s-1 and a differential stress of 25-39 MPa were estimated by the rheological flow law and quartz paleopiezometry. Finite strain measurements indicated that all deformed rocks of the Datong ductile shear zone exhibit a weakly oblate ellipsoid near the plane strain. Kinematic vorticity (ranging 0.47-0.83) analysis suggested the coexistence of simple shear and pure shear strains within the Datong ductile shear zone, indicating a transpressional setting. Biotite and muscovite 40Ar/39Ar data showed that transpressional shearing deformation started in the Ordovician (before 453 Ma) and lasted to the Silurian (ca. 430 Ma). Our new data combined with regional geological data show that the deformation type, kinematics, and dynamics of the Datong ductile shear zone were controlled by the southward oblique subduction of the Paleo-Qilian Ocean (Proto-Tethyan Ocean) and the following oblique collision between the Qilian block and the Alxa block. The intensive transpressional deformation along the northern Qilian block may reflect strong coupling between the subducting Paleo-Qilian oceanic slab and the overriding Qilian block as well as a high degree of convergence obliquity during the ongoing early Paleozoic convergence. The progression from initial back-arc rifting to back-arc opening in ancient orogenic collages is important for reconstructing subduction histories, constraining tectonic switching, and understanding crustal growth and evolution. However, it is difficult to constrain this transition in ancient arcs. The Qinling-Dabie orogenic belt is one of the most important orogenic belts in eastern Asia, yet the history of Paleozoic accretionary processes in this belt remains equivocal, owing to a poor understanding of back-arc opening processes in the Erlangping unit. In this study, we present whole-rock geochemical analyses of mafic dikes in the Erlangping unit, along with U-Pb ages and Hf-O isotope compositions of zircon from these dikes. Zircon secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) dating of these mafic dikes yielded U-Pb ages of 453 ± 3 Ma. The mafic dikes are calc-alkaline and are characterized by high K2O contents (1.16-3.16 wt%). They have enriched ([La/Yb]N = 4.3-14.9) light rare earth elements (REEs) and relatively flat heavy REE ([Dy/Yb]N = 0.9-1.5) patterns, and they exhibit enrichment in large ion lithophile elements (LILEs) but depletion in high field strength elements (HFSEs), resembling arc-like magmatism. These mafic dikes are characterized by relatively enriched initial 87Sr/87Sr (0.7049-0.7059), chondritic to slightly radiogenic εNd(t) (-0.36 to 1.33), and radiogenic whole-rock and zircon εHf(t) (+7.2-7.6 and +7.5-7.8, respectively). The zircons have δ18O values (5.0% ± 0.1%) similar to those of normal mantle zircon. Accordingly, we interpret that the mafic dikes were derived from an enriched lithospheric mantle source metasomatized by subducted Proto-Tethys (Shangdan) ocean material. In contrast, previously reported ca. 440 Ma gabbros from the Erlangping unit are tholeiitic and have lower incompatible trace-element concentrations with less enrichment in LILEs and less depletion in HFSEs than the mafic dikes presented here. Wholerock Nd and zircon Hf isotopic compositions suggest that these Silurian gabbros were derived from partial melting of a more depleted mantle with the involvement of asthenosphere, and they have a close geochemical affinity with back-arc basin basalts. In addition, trace-element ratios and geochemical modeling suggest higher melting pressures for the mafic dikes than the gabbros. The geochemical differences show systematic variations from islandarc basalt into back-arc basin basalt types, which is consistent with the magma source evolution of the Mariana Trough. Thus, we interpret that the ca. 454 Ma mafic dikes were emplaced when the infant arc split, and they record initial back-arc rifting in the Erlangping unit, whereas the Silurian gabbros subsequently formed during the opening of the back-arc basin. Our study provides a paradigm for deciphering the evolution of back-arc basins through the study of spatiotemporal geological and geochemical variations of mafic intrusions in ancient accretionary orogens. The late Mesozoic tectonic evolution of the eastern North China craton was intimately related with the subduction of the paleo-Pacific plate. This study sheds light on Late Jurassic-Early Cretaceous basin-mountain coupling during paleo-Pacific subduction based on low-temperature thermochronology and geochemical analyses from the easternmost Yanshan fold belt, located at the northern edge of the craton. We performed apatite U-Pb and fission-track double dating and trace element analyses of basement and sedimentary rock samples, integrated with zircon and apatite (U-Th)/He analyses on bedrock samples. Our results revealed that the easternmost Yanshan fold belt experienced two stages of rapid cooling and exhumation in the Middle Jurassic-earliest Cretaceous (ca. 170-140 Ma) and in the Early Cretaceous (ca. 140-90 Ma). The Middle Jurassic-earliest Cretaceous exhumation (ca. 170-140 Ma) is mainly recorded by bedrock along the margins of intermontane basins of the eastern Yanshan fold belt. This exhumation event is consistent with compressional Yanshan movement during the Middle Jurassic-earliest Cretaceous coeval with paleo-Pacific flat-slab subduction. Subsequent Early Cretaceous rapid cooling is ascribed to the progressive evolution of the metamorphic core complexes and associated tectonic exhumation of major plutons of northeastern Asia, which were likely controlled by rollback of the paleo-Pacific slab. A middle Cretaceous (ca. 110-90 Ma) tectonic exhumation event is revealed by very low lag-time values in middle Cretaceous strata. Our findings illustrate the potential of a thermochronology approach that combines single-grain double dating and trace element analyses in synmagmatic orogenic systems, which may find application to other orogenic settings worldwide. An early Paleozoic eclogite belt extends discontinuously for ~500 km in the East Kunlun Orogen, northwestern China, which provides insight into the evolution of the Proto-Tethys Ocean. However, the nature and age of the eclogite protoliths and subsequent metamorphism are unclear. Here, we report mineral chemical, zircon, and titanite geochronological; whole-rock major and trace elemental; and Sr-Nd isotopic data for eclogites from the Xiarihamu area in the western East Kunlun Orogen. At a minimum, these eclogites underwent peak eclogite-facies metamorphism at 27-28 kbar and 630-650 °C, post-peak decompression, and retrograde amphibolite-facies overprinting. Geochemically, eclogites have characteristics typical of enriched mid-oceanic-ridge basalts and oceanic-island basalts. Inherited magmatic zircon cores yielded a protolith age of 828 Ma, and metamorphic zircons yielded peak and post-peak decompression ages of 443 Ma and 422 Ma, respectively. A titanite U-Pb age of 413 Ma constrains the timing of later amphibolite-facies overprinting. The protoliths of the Xiarihamu eclogites were the products of continental rift-related basaltic magmatism, which was generated during the initial breakup of Rodinia. The protoliths experienced eclogite-facies metamorphism in a continental subduction/collisional setting during the early Paleozoic. The formation of the Xiarihamu eclogites suggests that the Proto-Tethys Ocean had closed by 443 Ma. Given the spatio-temporal relationship between the Xiarihamu magmatic Cu-Ni sulfide deposit and the eclogites studied, the former may have formed in a post-collisional extensional setting. The eclogites and magmatic Cu-Ni sulfide deposit from the Xiarihamu area jointly reveal the evolution of the East Kunlun Orogen from Neoproterozoic supercontinent breakup to early Paleozoic tectonic transitions from collisional convergence to post-collisional extension. The late Mesozoic destruction of the eastern North China Craton (NCC) resulted from intense crust-mantle interaction, culminating in the formation of world-class gold deposits in the Jiaodong Peninsula at ca. 120 Ma. We present zircon U-Pb geochronological data, Hf isotopic compositions, whole-rock major and trace element, and Sr-Nd-Pb isotopic compositions for two suites of granitoids: one (the Linglong suite) that hosts significant mineralization and the other (the Weideshan suite) that is largely unmineralized. The Linglong suite was emplaced in the Late Jurassic at 160 ± 3 Ma to 155 ± 3 Ma, whereas the Weideshan suite was emplaced in the Early Cretaceous at 121 ± 2 Ma to 118 ± 1 Ma, coeval with gold mineralization. Geochemical data indicate the Linglong suite was derived from the melting of thickened lower crust of the NCC, mixed with material from the Yangtze Craton (YC) and intervening Su-Lu Orogenic Belt, whereas the Weideshan suite was formed from the partial melting of lower continental crust, with the addition of enriched lithospheric mantle components. The Late Jurassic magmatism was associated with crustal growth resulting from the continental collision between the NCC and YC and subsequent subduction of the Paleo-Pacific Oceanic Plate (PPOP). In contrast, Early Cretaceous magmatism was triggered by rapid lithospheric thinning and asthenospheric upwelling resulting from slab roll-back and stagnation of the PPOP beneath the NCC. Lithospheric delamination induced the widespread development of secondary structures associated with the major Tan-Lu Fault, providing favorable loci for the accumulation of auriferous fluids. The eastern part of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt in NE China is one of the world's well-known Ag-Pb-Zn-Mo metallogenic provinces, and the late Mesozoic magmas have been considered to supply dominant metals for mineralization. However, Cu mineralization in this belt is relatively rare. The Zhalageamu deposit is a newly discovered copper deposit in this region and could be applied to address the issue of whether the regional late Mesozoic magmatism could have triggered the formation of large Cu deposits. The quartz diorite and granite porphyry in Zhalageamu returned laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometric (LA-ICP-MS) zircon U-Pb ages of 267.1 ± 2.0 Ma and 255.6 ± 2.2 Ma, respectively. Molybdenite coexisting with chalcopyrite yielded an isotope dilution-negative-thermal ionization mass spectrometric Re-Os age of 141.8 ± 0.8 Ma. This age is almost identical to that of the coexisting arsenopyrite within the analytical uncertainty, which yielded an Re-Os isochron age of 140.7 ± 5.9 Ma. The above ages constrain the timing of Cu mineralization to the late Mesozoic. The fact that the Cu mineralization is >110 m.y. younger than its igneous host rocks precludes a genetic link between them. Instead, the Cu mineralization age indicates that a possible hidden late Mesozoic intrusion likely contributed Cu mineralization. The age of the Zhalageamu deposit is similar to that of the late Mesozoic magmatic-hydrothermal Ag-Pb-Zn-Fe-Sn mineralizing event (140-120 Ma) in NE China. This suggests that the Zhalageamu Cu mineralization was part of this event and implies the broader existence of a late Mesozoic magmatic-hydrothermal Cu mineralizing event in NE China, a discovery that would be of great significance for further Cu exploration. The well-preserved Ashele subseafloor replacement-style volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposit in the Central Asian Orogenic Belt comprises two stages of Cu mineralization, i.e., early massive sulfides dominated by colloform and euhedral pyrite intergrown with chalcopyrite and sphalerite, which were replaced by late vein-dominated chlorite-chalcopyrite assemblages. In this study, a combined systematic Fe, B, and S isotope investigation was first applied to investigate the sulfide precipitation processes and the relative proportion of fluid sources in different alteration and mineralization stages of the Ashele deposit. Boron isotopes of Mg-rich tourmaline (δ11B from -5.57‰ to -2.73‰, average (avg.) -4.23‰) indicate significant seawater (∼19%) participated during the formation of massive sulfides. A two-component mixing model is used to estimate the contribution of seawater and igneous sulfur to the total sulfur budget, and the results show the increasing contribution of magmatic sulfur from the early (35%) to late (76%) stages. In addition, δ56Fe values of pyrite gradually increase from the massive ore (-0.46‰ to -0.02‰, avg. -0.24‰), quartzpyrite (-0.09‰ to 0.07‰, avg. -0.01‰), chlorite-chalcopyrite-quartz-pyrite (0‰ to 0.21‰, avg. 0.08‰) to the quartz-sericite zone (-0.02‰ to 0.29‰, avg. 0.14‰), which is likely related to the different extent of isotopic exchange and formation temperature, and could be used in the exploration of VMS systems. The new two-stage ore-forming model shows that in the early stage, rapid mixing of hydrothermal fluid from underlying magma chamber with abundant cold seawater led to rapid deposition of pyrite and associated Cu mineralization under relatively oxidized condition, and long-term hydrothermal activities in relatively closed systems would promote the formation of upper massive ores, which resulted in an equilibrium system between pyrite, chalcopyrite, and associated fluid with wide ranges of δ56Fe in pyrite (-0.46‰ to -0.02‰) and chalcopyrite (-1.56‰ to -0.49‰). The late hydrothermal activities in relatively open system would contribute to stringer sulfides or stockworks underlying the massive ore in relatively reduced conditions with heavier Fe isotope compositions in pyrite (-0.09‰ to 0.29‰) and chalcopyrite (-0.60‰ to - 0.04‰). Overall, our study demonstrates that the coupling of B, Fe, and S isotopes could be a useful tool to indicate long-term subseafloor infilling and replacement processes for subseafloor replacementtype VMS deposits, which are the prerequisite to form large-tonnage VMS deposits. The property of regional metamorphism at convergent plate margins is substantially related to the change of geothermal gradients, resulting in different types of crustal reworking through metamorphic dehydration and partial melting. The relationship between crustal metamorphism and thermal evolution of collisional orogens can thus be deciphered by investigating the change of metamorphic thermobaric ratios in both space and time. This is illustrated by a combined study of field observation, petrographic observation, whole-rock and mineral major and trace elements, laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry zircon and monazite U-Th-Pb isotopes and trace elements, and phase equilibrium modeling of granitic gneisses from the Cona area, southern Tibet, in the Himalayan orogen. The results reveal variations in spatial level, protolith age, petrological composition, and metamorphic pressure-temperature-time path along an N-S transect across the Higher Himalayas. On this basis, three types of granitic gneisses were identified for the Miocene metamorphism. Type I gneiss was formed at 16.2-14.7 Ma under upper amphibolite facies conditions of 720-735 °C and 0.77-0.82 GPa, Type II gneisses were formed at 18.3-14.3 Ma under granulite facies conditions of 765-795 °C and 0.99-1.06 GPa, and Type III gneisses were formed at 21.8-13.0 Ma under high-pressure granulite facies conditions of 850-875 °C and 1.40-1.45 GPa. These rocks underwent anatectic metamorphism at lower to upper crustal depths from 22 to 13 Ma, and their metamorphic thermobaric ratios increase from 586-803 °C/GPa at 22-18 Ma to 878-967 °C/GPa and finally to 1071 °C/GPa at 15-13 Ma. This increase corresponds to a progressive increase in metamorphic geothermal gradients from 16.1-22.0 °C/km to 24.1-26.5 °C/km and finally to 29.4 °C/km. Therefore, the crustal rocks in the Himalayan orogen experienced the three types of regional metamorphism at the three different geothermal gradients in the Miocene. The progressively elevated geothermal gradients are attributed to continental rifting due to asthenospheric upwelling consequential to thinning of the lithospheric mantle in the collisional orogen. The Central Asian Orogenic Belt was characterized by a long-lived accretionary history from Neoproterozoic to Paleozoic, followed by a collisional phase of orogeny in the latest Paleozoic with the closure of the Paleo-Asian Ocean. However, Ni-Cu sulfide mineralization associated with mantle-derived mafic magmas in the Central Asian Orogenic Belt was relatively short-lived. Thus, the coherence between the protracted accretionary and collisional history of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt and the transient Ni-Cu sulfide-bearing mafic magmatism is difficult to understand. We investigated both Ni-Cu sulfidebearing and sulfide-barren mafic intrusions along a major suture zone of the Irtysh Shear Zone within the Central Asian Orogenic Belt to understand the origin of shortlived Ni-Cu sulfide mineralization in the context of the collision of two arc systems of the Chinese Altai and the East Junggar regions. Zircon U-Pb dating results for the Ni-Cu sulfide-bearing mafic intrusions show that they were only emplaced briefly from 290 Ma to 280 Ma after subduction terminated (ca. 312 Ma), substantially earlier than Ni-Cu sulfide-barren mafic intrusions (ca. 274--271 Ma). Zircons from all Ni-Cu sulfide-bearing/barren mafic intrusions yield arithmetic mean δ18O values ranging from 6.0 to 7.4‰, higher than the typical mantle value (~5.3‰), which indicates their derivation from a metasomatized mantle with inherited subduction signatures. The δ11B values of the rocks from these intrusions range from -17.2‰ to -2.3‰, significantly lower than those of typical volcanic arcs (up to +18‰), which suggests that the metasomatic components in the mantle source were dominated by sediment melts rather than fluids. The pressure calculated using amphibole thermobarometry shows that the parental magmas of the Ni-Cu sulfide-bearing mafic intrusions were emplaced shallower than those of Ni-Cu sulfide-barren mafic intrusions. This is supported by the fact that the country rocks of the Ni-Cu sulfidebearing mafic intrusions are shallow crustal lithologies of sedimentary rocks, whereas the country rocks of the barren intrusions are relatively deeper crustal lithologies of high-grade metamorphic rocks and granites. Olivine from the Ni-Cu sulfide-barren intrusions has forsterite (Fo) contents ranging from 51.1 mol% to 76.2 mol% and Ni from 196 ppm to 1312 ppm. These values are much lower than those of the Ni-Cu sulfide-bearing intrusions (Fo = 72.6-79.4 mol%; Ni = 1022-1925 ppm), which indicates that the parental magmas of the barren intrusions may have experienced extensive olivine crystallization. Notably, the emplacement of the Ni-Cu sulfide-bearing mafic intrusions (290-280 Ma) coincidently overlapped with a transient period of orogen-parallel extension (ca. 295-280 Ma) in response to the collision of the Chinese Altai and East Junggar. Syn-collisional extension may lead to the rapid ascent and emplacement of mantle-derived mafic magmas at a shallower crustal level, preventing significant loss of Ni from olivine crystallization at depths, and thus providing metal-rich mafic magmas for potential Ni-Cu sulfide mineralization. Our results highlight that syn-collisional extension is an essential geodynamic mechanism that controls the emplacement of Ni-Cu sulfide-bearing mafic intrusions in orogenic belts. There is general agreement that a series of East Asian blocks has always lain outboard of both India and Australia along the North Indo--Australie peripheral orogen. However, whether the East Asian blocks were involved in the interior orogens of East Gondwana remains equivocal. The geochronology and geochemistry of Neoproterozoic--Late Triassic rocks in the Russian Far East, together with existing paleontological and detrital zircon data, offer an opportunity to determine the tectonic origin and drift history of the Bureya--Jiamusi--Khanka superterrane. Biotite and amphibole 40Ar/39Ar dating results define a distinctive episode of Late Pan-African (ca. 550 Ma) metamorphism and a local Late Triassic (ca. 219-200 Ma) episode of deformation for the Bureya--Jiamusi--Khanka superterrane. Zircon U--Pb ages and whole-rock geochemical data indicate that the Early Ordovician (483 ± 3 Ma) highly fractionated I-type monzogranites were emplaced in a post-collisional setting linked to the collapse of a Late Pan-African orogen, while the Late Triassic (ca. 234-223 Ma) A-type quartz syenites and I-type granite aplite dikes were formed in a slabpull--induced passive continental margin of the subducting Mudanjiang oceanic plate. These crucial archives, complemented by data from the literature, reveal that the Bureya--Jiamusi--Khanka superterrane made up the northernmost Kuunga-Pinjarra interior orogen during the final assembly of East Gondwana. As a result of Devonian rifting after Early Ordovician orogen collapse, the Bureya--Jiamusi--Khanka superterrane escaped from the Kuunga-Pinjarra interior orogen and subsequently migrated to Northeast Asia by the Late Triassic to Jurassic due to the subduction and closure of the Paleo-Tethys and Paleo-Pacific oceans. The Bay of Islands complex, Newfoundland, Canada, represents a fossil subduction system that was obducted onto the Laurentian margin during the Taconic Orogeny. We present whole-rock geochemistry and geochronology for the Bay of Islands metamorphic sole from the Table Mountain and North Arm Mountain massifs. The Bay of Islands metamorphic sole can be subdivided into three units: a high metamorphic-grade Grt-Cpx amphibolite and Grt-Cpx granulite unit, a medium metamorphic-grade common amphibolite unit, and a medium metamorphic- grade metasedimentary-dominated unit. Based on their major and trace element contents, two types of protoliths can be inferred for the Bay of Islands sole metabasites: cumulate gabbroic protoliths with high Mg numbers and depleted trace element contents, and basaltic protoliths with trace element contents defining a normal mid-oceanic-ridge basalt (N-MORB) affinity. Titanite in situ U-Pb analyses of two common amphibolite samples yield dates of 486 ± 7 Ma and 484 ± 4 Ma, which are interpreted as a metamorphic age (ca. 485 Ma). One sample from the metasedimentary unit yields detrital zircon dates that range from Archean to Ordovician, with the youngest dates defining the most dominant peak at ca. 490 Ma. This youngest peak is consistent with an arc-related source that may be linked with arc magmatism of the upper plate during the Taconic Orogeny. These observations suggest that (1) the subduction responsible for the formation of the Bay of Islands complex nucleated in an oceanic domain before ca. 485 Ma; and (2) the sediments that form the metasedimentary unit were partly sourced from the upper plate and were deposited on the lower plate while subduction was active. The East Kunlun orogenic belt in the northern Tibetan Plateau records a longterm accretionary and collisional history in the northeastern Proto-Tethys Ocean, which is important for reconstructing the paleogeography of early Paleozoic East Asia. Here, we present an integrated study combining petrology, geochemistry, geochronology, and metamorphic pressure--temperature (P--T) data of newly found eclogites in the middle Nuomuhong segment of the East Kunlun orogenic belt. The eclogites are composed mainly of garnet, omphacite and low-sodium clinopyroxene, amphibole and plagioclase with minor orthopyroxene, biotite, quartz, accessory rutile, ilmenite, titanite, and zircon. Detailed petrographic observations, conventional geothermobarometry, and phase equilibrium modeling point to the presence of five metamorphic mineral assemblages with corresponding P--T conditions related to: (1) prograde M1 stage P--T estimates at >14.0 kbar/~470-506 °C; (2) Pmax M2 eclogite-facies stage P--T conditions of ~26 kbar/~570 °C; (3) early retrograde M3 high-pressure granulitefacies stage; (4) subsequent M4 retrograde medium-pressure granulite facies at Tmax of ~860--900 °C; and (5) later M5 retrograde amphibolite-facies stage P--T conditions of <6.2 kbar/~710-730 °C. These P--T estimates define a clockwise P--T path characterized by heating during the Pmax formation of the eclogite facies, to the Tmax exhumation stage of granulite-facies lithologies, the latter of which is identified for the first time in retrograde eclogites from the East Kunlun orogenic belt. Whole-rock geochemical compositions indicate a mid-oceanic-ridge basalt (MORB) affinity for the eclogite protoliths and a fragmented oceanic crust origin. Sensitive high-resolution ion microprobe (SHRIMP) zircon U--Pb isotopic analyses of the eclogite yielded two groups of weighted mean 206U/238Pb ages of 464 ± 8 Ma and 419 ± 4 Ma, which are interpreted as the age of the eclogite protoliths and the lower threshold for peak eclogite-facies metamorphism, respectively. Our new data, together with regional eclogite-facies metamorphism, suggest a ca. 520-460 Ma age for the subduction of the eastern Kunlun oceanic crust, within the northern Proto-Tethys Ocean, to a depth of ~83 km, with early subduction--accretionary orogenesis at ca. 419 Ma. Overprinting by high-temperature granulite-facies points to exhumation of oceanic crust to the middle to shallow crustal level at this time. Collectively, the preserved eclogite and high-temperature granulite mineral assemblage provide new constraints on the tectonic evolution and the detailed accretionary-to-collisional orogenesis of the Proto-Tethys Ocean. They suggest that the ca. 428-411 Ma subduction-collisional event marked the termination of the Proto-Tethys Ocean and the eventual formation of an ~500-km-long, high- to ultra-high-pressure metamorphic belt in the East Kunlun orogenic belt. Hydrothermal mineralization along the circum-Pacific continental margin is genetically linked to the motions of the Pacific Plate. Compiled geochronological results of ore deposits, coupled with the newly reconstructed geometry of the late Early Cretaceous subduction zones in East China, North America, and the Central Andes using GPlates and I2VIS software, were applied to investigate the relationships between mineralization and Pacific Plate formation. The ~120-m.y.-old orogenic Au provinces in East China and North America are related to transpression caused by high-rate oblique subduction with intermediate--high dip angles of the Izanagi and Farallon plates, respectively. In contrast, the ~105-m.y.-old porphyry-epithermal belt in Southeast China was produced by oblique subduction of the Izanagi Plate with low--intermediate subduction rates and intermediate--high dip angles. In the Central Andes, the oblique subduction of the Farallon Plate with low--intermediate rates and low dip angle accounted for iron oxide--copper--gold ore (IOCG) deposit mineralization in South Peru at ca. 110 Ma; whereas the high rate and low dip-angle subduction of the paleo-Phoenix Plate, which caused mild compression, was responsible for Fe, porphyry Cu, and IOCG mineralization in North Chile at ca. 110 Ma. The late Early Cretaceous metallogenic response in the circum-Pacific region coincides with superplume events that triggered the significant growth of the modern Pacific Plate. The forward simulations reveal that different subsequent styles of subduction and associated magmatism are likely responsible for the distinct mineralization types present in the region, including orogenic Au, porphyry-epithermal, Fe, and IOCG deposits. Differentiating between advancing and retreating subduction zones and delineating the timing and processes for switching between these end-member types are critical factors in understanding orogenic evolution. In this study, we used temporal composition variations and spatiotemporal distribution of igneous rocks to constrain the types and directions of the subduction zone beneath the Lhasa terrane in southern Tibet during the mid-Mesozoic. Comprehensive geochronological and geochemical data from mid- Mesozoic magmatic rocks in five areas of the central Lhasa terrane document two compositionally distinct magmatic suites: older (ca. 172-150 Ma) high-Mg diorite-granodiorite and younger (ca. 150-130 Ma) low-Mg granodiorite-syenogranite. The high-Mg rocks with enriched isotopes were likely generated by the mixing of Lhasa terrane basement- derived magmas with mantle-derived magmas that incorporated extensive contributions from subducted sediments. The low- Mg rocks with relatively depleted isotopes are interpreted as derived from a mixed lowercrust source (ancient basement and juvenile crust) with minor mantle contributions followed by crystal fractionation. Both high-Mg and low-Mg rocks show arc signatures and formed the 1200 km Shiquan-Zhegu-Menba arc. A combination of the Mesozoic geological and geochemical data suggests that both the Neo-Tethyan and Bangong Tethyan slabs were likely subducting beneath the Lhasa terrane, creating two opposing subduction zones. The change from high-Mg to low- Mg magmatism within the Shiquan-Zhegu- Menba arc likely records a tectonic switch from advancing to retreating subduction of the south-dipping Bangong Tethyan slab. Our results provide a good example for identification of subduction polarities and types of ancient orogenic belts through spatiotemporal distributions and changes in geochemical compositions of igneous rocks. Regional heat flow provides a direct surface indication of the thermal state and energy balance of the lithosphere. Heat flux in the Tibetan Plateau remains poorly studied due to the lack of adequate information on heat flow. In this study, we investigated granitoids from the Gonghe-Guide district located in the NE Tibetan Plateau, which have important significance as hot and dry rocks with potential for geothermal resources. Samples from granitoid rocks as well as felsic dikes were collected from this area, and their geochemical data were combined with regional geophysical and drilling core data to evaluate a high-heat-flow anomaly. Our data show that granitoid rocks, including granodiorite, monzogranite, and syenogranite, crystallized at ca. 253-240 Ma, while felsic dikes formed ca. 230 Ma. The former were emplaced during the oceanic subduction process, whereas the latter formed in the syncollisional stage associated with the closure of the paleo-Zongwulong Ocean. Geochemically, these granitoid rocks are metaluminous to slightly peraluminous, with an average differentiation index (DI) value of 80, and they are classified as weakly to moderately fractionated I-type granites. The felsic dikes are peraluminous with high DI values (average of 95), typical of highly fractionated I-type granites. In terms of their high K and especially U and Th abundances, the calculated radioactive heat generation produced by the granodiorite, monzogranite, syenogranite, and felsic dikes is 1.85, 2.91, 6.85, and 3.02 μW/m³, respectively. Their moderate to high heat production generates a local heat-flow anomaly of 14.8-22.2 mW/m² above the regional value of subduction zones, accounting for 11%-18% of the total regional heat flow. In combination with regional magnetotelluric data, the high-heat-flow anomaly may be attributed to an additional heat-flow contribution from a partial melt layer beneath this region. Furthermore, there is a significant positive correlation between the radioactive heat generation and magmatic fractionation, indicating that the enrichments of heat-producing elements are controlled by fractional crystallization and subsequently source composition. The granitoid rocks with high heat generation correspond to the large-scale intermediate-felsic magmatism during the subduction stage. We propose a model wherein a continuous subduction process during the closure of the paleo-Zongwulong Ocean and protracted cooling and crystallization processes resulted in the enrichment in heat-producing elements. Arc magmatism can provide crucial information about crustal recycling and growth in subduction zones. However, the crustal material transfer process and mechanism from subducting slab to overlying mantle wedge are controversial. Here, we present detailed petrological, geochronological, geochemical, and Sr-Nd-Hf isotopic data, and previously published data for two episodes of subduction-related magmatism in the Northern Yili Block, NW China, to study these issues in relation to the recycling of continental crust and the growth of two separate magmatic episodes at 400-350 Ma and 350-300 Ma, respectively. The Nd-Sr isotope modeling results, low Nd/Sr, and variable Hf/Nd ratios demonstrate that the arc magmatism of these two episodes could be derived from two distinct mélange sources that formed at the slab-mantle interface during subduction of the Junggar oceanic plate. In the first episode, magmatic rocks exhibit high Th/Yb and (La/Sm)N ratios and the decoupling of Nd-Hf isotopes, which leads to an interpretation that the primary magmas were derived from sources mainly mixed by sediments and mantle-wedge peridotites. In contrast, the magmas of the second episode exhibit high Ba/La and Ba/Th ratios and the coupling of Nd-Hf isotopes, which implies that these magmas were likely produced from mélange diapirs dominated by the mixing of midoceanic-ridge basalts and mantle peridotites. The episodes of Nd-Hf isotopic decoupling and coupling coincided with crustal material recycling and crustal growth in subduction zones, respectively. Considering that the Northern Yili Block at 400-350 Ma was characterized mainly by enriched Nd-Hf isotopes of magmatic rocks and no development of the forearc accretionary complex, while the Northern Yili Block at 350-300 Ma featured high εHf(t)-εNd(t) values of magmatic rocks, occurrences of extension-related magmatism, and distribution of the forearc accretionary complex and immature back-arc basin, we propose that these two different mélange sources probably developed in response to subduction transition. That is, one resulted from advancing and the other was relevant to retreating regime. The partial melting of these mélanges in the mantle wedge generated intermediate felsic magmas, which might have acted as a leading mechanism for crustal recycling and growth of the accretionary orogenic belt. Metamorphic rocks encode invaluable information on the burial and exhumation history of rocks that is critical to our understanding of orogens. In this work, zircon U--Pb dating, pseudosection, and garnet zoning modeling were performed on samples from the North Altyn area, SE Tarim Craton, NW China. Zircon U--Pb geochronological data indicate that the peak metamorphism occurred at ca. 2.0 Ga. Pseudosection isopleth thermobarometry using garnet growth zoning of the sample from the northern part of the North Altyn area (Kalatashtagh) reveals a decompression and heating path to a peak temperature of 735 °C and 0.74 GPa under the equilibrium crystallization model. The preservation of growth zoning under high temperature requires relatively rapid cooling. In contrast, garnet from the southern part of the North Altyn area (Aktashtagh) preserves diffusion zoning. Metamorphic peak occurs at 670-735 °C and 0.67-0.73 GPa, which suggests a high dT/dP-type metamorphism. Diffusion zoning modeling suggests an extremely slow cooling rate of 1-5 °C/m.y., which indicates prolonged (~100 m.y.) crustal residence time at high temperature. This requires a long-term heat supply, most likely from radiogenic heat from buried sediments or heat conducted from the asthenosphere. The high dT/dP and slow cooling rate, combined with extensive crustal anatexis from previous studies, indicate that the late Paleoproterozoic North Altyn Orogen is a long-lived hot orogen rather than a subduction--accretionary complex. We propose a tectonic model that involves a ca. 2.1-2.0 Ga arc--back-arc system in the SE Tarim Craton. Whether deformation of exhumed crust in a collisional orogen is driven by buoyancy or tectonic stress remains uncertain. The Sulu orogen in eastern China contains slowly subducted and exhumed high-pressure (HP)--ultrahigh-pressure (UHP) terranes, which provide a good opportunity to understand whether the exhumation deformation was driven by buoyancy. We used field and microscopic observations as well as quartz c-axis fabrics to determine the deformation kinematics, temperatures, and evolution of the exhumed crustal slices. Deformed and undeformed dikes were dated by using the zircon U-Pb laser ablation--inductively coupled plasma--mass spectrometry method to constrain the timing of deformation. Our data demonstrate that each crustal slice was involved in pervasive top-to-the-NW (hinterland) or top-to-the-SE (foreland) ductile deformation during Late Triassic exhumation, and that the base of each slice records deformation that was superimposed during the subsequent exhumation of the underlying slice. The crustal exhumation of the southern Sulu orogen is consistent with the multistage ductile extrusion model. The kinematics of exhumation deformation within each crustal slice conform to an upward asymmetric flow. The flow velocity and corresponding shear sense were affected by temperature variations in each HP slice, whereas they were sensitive to migmatization within the UHP slices. The southern Sulu orogen examples show that crustal flow deformation during exhumation was driven by buoyancy and controlled by viscosity. Unlike the consistent kinematics of tectonics-driven deformation, the kinematics of buoyancy-driven deformation are characterized by variations in the senses of shear within a single crustal slice, and this can therefore be used to distinguish the two types of deformation. Uplift and amalgamation of the highelevation (>3000 m) Tian Shan and Pamir ranges in Central Asia restricts westerly atmospheric flow and thereby limits moisture delivery to the leeward Taklimakan Desert in the Tarim Basin (<1500 m), the second largest modern sand dune desert on Earth. Although some research suggests that the hyper-arid conditions observed today in the Tarim Basin developed by ca. 25 Ma, stratigraphic evidence suggests the first erg system did not appear until 12.2 Ma. To address this controversy and to understand the tectonic influences on climate in Central Asia, we studied a continuous, 3800-m-thick stratigraphic section deposited from 15.1 to 0.9 Ma now exposed within the western Kepintagh fold-and-thrust belt in the southern Tian Shan foreland. We present new detrital zircon data (n = 839), new carbonate oxygen (δ18Oc) and carbon (δ13Cc) stable isotope compositions (n = 368), structural modeling, and stratigraphic observations, and combine these data with recently published magnetostratigraphy and regional studies to reconstruct the history of deposition, deformation, and climate change in the northwestern Tarim Basin. We find that basins along the southern (this study) and northern (i.e., Ili Basin) margins of the Tian Shan were likely receiving similar westerly precipitation by 15 Ma (δ18Oc = ~-8‰) and had similar lacustrine-playa environments at ca. 13.5 Ma, despite differences in sedimentary provenance. At ca. 12 Ma, an erg desert formed adjacent to the southern Tian Shan in the northwestern Tarim Basin, coincident with a mid- to late Miocene phase of deformation and exhumation within both the Pamir and southern Tian Shan. Desertification at ca. 12 Ma was marked by a negative δ18Oc excursion from -7.8 ± 0.4‰ to -8.7 ± 0.7‰ in the southern Tian Shan foreland (this study), coeval with a negative δ18Oc excursion (~-11 to -13‰) in the Tajik Basin, west of the Pamir. These data suggest that only after ca. 12 Ma did the Pamir-Tian Shan create a high-elevation barrier that effectively blocked westerly moisture, forming a rain shadow in the northwestern Tarim Basin. After 7 Ma, the southern Tian Shan foreland migrated southward as this region experienced widespread deformation. In our study area, rapid shortening and deformation above two frontal foreland faults initiated between 6.0 and 3.5 Ma resulted in positive δ13Cc excursions to values close to 0‰, which is interpreted to reflect exhumation in the Tian Shan and recycling of Paleozoic carbonates. Shortening led to isolation of the study site as a piggy-back basin by 3.5 Ma, when the sediment provenance was limited to the exhumed Paleozoic basement rocks of the Kepintagh fold belt. The abrupt sedimentologic and isotopic changes observed in the southern Tian Shan foreland appear to be decoupled from late Cenozoic global climate change and can be explained entirely by local tectonics. The termination of the Paleo-Asian Ocean, including duration and architecture, is controversial and has led to different reconstructions of the Central Asian orogenic belt. Deep-marine turbidites are of great significance in constraining the evolution of the oceanic basin. The youngest marine turbidites in the Beishan orogen in the central part of the southern Central Asian orogenic belt are separated by the Liuyuan mélange into two sections, the South turbidites and North turbidites. Detrital zircon grains from South turbidites yielded a maximum depositional age of 255 Ma. Those from North turbidites yielded a maximum depositional age of 254 Ma. Most of the Precambrian zircons of South turbidites have concentrated εHf(t) values (-6 to -2.6), whereas those of North turbidites range from -12.6 to +10.4, indicating different provenances. The North turbidites also have more positive whole-rock εNd(t) values (-0.5 to +1.1) than the South turbidites (-4.2 to -2.4), suggesting more juvenile or less evolved crustal components in the source. Detailed comparison of the detrital zircon ages and Hf-Nd isotopic characteristics with igneous and metamorphic rocks in the south Beishan area distinguishes two sources. These findings constrain the Liuyuan suture as the latest suture in the Beishan region, occurring no earlier than 254 Ma. The youngest peak age of detrital zircons of the youngest marine sedimentary rocks in the southern Central Asian orogenic belt becomes younger eastward from 288 Ma to 247 Ma, characterizing the closure duration of the Paleo-Asian Ocean from west to east in ~40 m.y. This study finds that the youngest turbidites in the Beishan orogen not only record sedimentary processes in response to the final episode of orogenic evolution in the southern Central Asian orogenic belt, but they also constrain how and when an archipelago-type accretionary orogen terminated. The Biesituobie A-type batholith in West Junggar in NW China of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt contains metapelite xenoliths derived from the contact metamorphic aureole. These xenoliths could be divided into two types: biotite-muscovite-andalusite hornfels and cordierite-alkaline feldspar-sillimanitecorundum gneiss, indicating prograde metamorphism. The phase equilibrium modeling on the cordierite-alkaline feldspar-sillimanite-corundum gneiss sample yielded a peak condition of P = 3.0-4.0 kbar, T = 760-800 °C. Similarly, the Na-in-cordierite geothermometer yielded a peak condition of T = 771-780 °C. The temperature of the peak metamorphism could be considered as a lower limit of the temperature of the Biesituobie A-type batholith. On the contrary, the Ti-in-zircon geothermometer applied to the Biesituobie A-type batholith zircons yields a mean temperature of 672 ± 22 °C. It suggested that the application of Ti-in-zircon geothermometer on A-type magma may involve a >100 °C underestimation. Zircon U-Pb dating indicates that the age of the contact metamorphism is between 263 and 286 Ma, consistent with the age of the pluton at 274 Ma. The result of 760-800 °C calculated from the contact metamorphic aureole of the Biesituobie batholith put a lower limit on considering the temperature condition of the A-type granite series from a metamorphic constraint. Recognizing terminal ridge subduction is of first-order importance in chronicling the tectonic timeline of any accretionary orogens, but remains elusive in the final suturing zone of the Paleo-Asian Ocean along the Solonker-- Xar Moron--Changchun--Yanji swath. Here we report two generations of ultramaficmafic to intermediate intrusions from northern Liaoning, North China, linking eastern Central Asian Orogenic Belt and northern North China Craton. The ca. 259 Ma appinites show variable enrichment in large-ion lithophile elements (LILEs) but depletion in high-field strength elements (HFSEs), and variably enriched isotopic compositions with εNd(t) of -11.8 to -2.4 and zircon εHf(t) of -15.7 to +5.0. These petro-geochemical traits argue for their derivation from partial melting of subduction-modified lithospheric mantle. By contrast, the high-Mg diorites of 226-223 Ma display decoupling features between LILEs and HFSEs and juvenile isotopic signatures with εNd(t) of -0.3 to +2.6 and zircon εHf(t) of +5.4 to +11.4. These characters are consistent with a magmatic origin from partial fusion of sediment-fertilized asthenospheric mantle. Synthesizing the two mantle-melting events with regional coeval igneous activities leads to the identification of Late Permian (265-250 Ma) and Middle-Late Triassic (241-218 Ma) magmatic flare-ups with a 10-15 m.y. lull along the northern North China Craton. This magmatic tempo tends to record a salient mantle replacement from hydrous metasomatized lithosphere to anhydrous asthenosphere. In combination with ensuing progressive crustal growth, simultaneous metamorphism, and structural activities, these diverse manifestations make a compelling case of ridge subduction and concomitant slab window formation during the eventual closure of the Paleo-Asian Ocean along the Solonker--Xar Moron--Changchun--Yanji swath. Brittle shallow crustal faults typically develop a complex fault zone architecture with distinct structural domains that display diverse microstructures, mineralogy, and deformation mechanisms. The development of such domains is typically controlled by the strength and composition of the protoliths, physical conditions of deformation, fluid ingress, and diachronous fault growth in response to stress accumulation and co-seismic slip. Herein, we studied the microstructuremineralogy- kinematics of fault rocks in the Nahan Thrust, in the vicinity of the Main Frontal Thrust that represents a tectonically active zone in the Himalayan orogen. The Nahan Thrust is characterized by alternating red and gray gouge layers, and a single black gouge layer. Our results from electron microscopy and X-ray diffractometry indicate that the protolith of the red gouge layers is argillaceous sandstone, whereas that of the gray and black gouge layers is sandstone. Microstructures suggest an initially distributed deformation (aseismic creep), followed by a protracted brittle deformation event, and a later aseismic creep stage. The brittle stage is marked by progressive localization of stress, fracture development, cataclasis, frictional sliding, and seismic slips. The black gouge layer acted as the principal slip zone and exhibited ultrafine bands of micrometerscale slip zones with vapor escape structures and clay clast aggregates, indicating seismic faulting and frictional heating during seismic slips. The preferential seismic rupture nucleation in the black gouge layer indicates a strong lithological dependence on seismic slip in the Nahan Thrust. The Chinese Tianshan experienced large-scale transcurrent tectonics, synkinematic emplacement of ultramafic to felsic intrusions, and the formation of various mineral deposits during late Paleozoic accretionary orogenesis. The relationships among the spatial variation of deformation, the distribution of Permian orogenic Au and magmatic Ni-Cu sulfide deposits, and the kinematic evolution of crustal-scale shear zones, however, remain ambiguous. To address these ambiguities, the spatial variation in the degree of deformation in the Kanggur-Huangshan shear zone in the Chinese Tianshan was characterized using detailed structural measurements and zircon U-Pb and muscovite 40Ar/39Ar age data. The new structural data indicate that a prominent spatial variation exists in the style of deformation throughout the Kanggur-Huangshan shear zone; intense ductile deformation structures are dominant in the east, while brittle structures become progressively more dominant toward to the west. Zircon U-Pb and muscovite 40Ar/39Ar age data for syn- and Huangshan shear zone indicate that dextral strike-slip shearing occurred between 279 Ma and 249 Ma. The spatial variation in the degree of deformation and exhumation along the Kanggur-Huangshan shear zone was potentially caused by regional differential uplift induced by the collision of the Tianshan and Beishan regions; this was likely responsible for the predominant occurrence of magmatic Ni-Cu sulfide deposits in the eastern portion of the Kanggur-Huangshan shear zone and orogenic Au deposits in the western portion. The identified spatio-temporal relationship between deformation and distribution of orogenic Au and magmatic Ni-Cu sulfide deposits is crucial to the future success of mineral exploration in the Central Asian orogenic belt. The Beishan orogen is part of the Neoproterozoic to early Mesozoic Central Asian Orogenic System in central Asia that exposes ophiolitic complexes, passive-margin strata, arc assemblages, and Precambrian basement rocks. To better constrain the tectonic evolution of the Beishan orogen, we conducted field mapping, U-Pb zircon dating, whole-rock geochemical analysis, and Sr-Nd isotopic analysis. The new results, when interpreted in the context of the known geological setting, show that the Beishan region had experienced five phases of arc magmatism at ca. 1450-1395 Ma, ca. 1071-867 Ma, ca. 542-395 Ma, ca. 468-212 Ma, and ca. 307-212 Ma. In order to explain the geological, geochemical, and geochronological data from the Beishan region, we present a tectonic model that involves the following five phases of deformation: (1) Proterozoic rifting that separated the North Beishan block from the Greater North China craton that led to the opening of the Beishan Ocean, (2) early Paleozoic north-dipping subduction (ca. 530- 430 Ma) of the Beishan oceanic plate associated with back-arc extension followed by collision between the North and South Beishan microcontinental blocks, (3) northward slab rollback of the south-dipping subducting Paleo-Asian oceanic plate at ca. 450-440 Ma along the northern margin of the North Beishan block that led to the formation of a northward-younging extensional continental arc (ca. 470-280 Ma) associated with bimodal igneous activity, which indicates that the westward extension of the Solonker suture is located north of the Hongshishan-Pengboshan tectonic zone, (4) Late Carboniferous opening and Permian north-dipping subduction of the Liuyuan Ocean in the southern Beishan orogen, and (5) Mesozoic-Cenozoic intracontinental deformation induced by the final closure of the Paleo-Asian Ocean system in the north and the Tethyan Ocean system in the south. Granulite is in general a key metamorphic rock that can be used to understand the tectonic architecture and evolutionary history of an orogenic belt. The Qingshuiquan mafic granulite in the East Kunlun orogenic belt, northern Tibetan Plateau, occurs as tectonic boudins together with lower-grade ophiolitic mélange assemblages within an amphibolitefacies crystalline basement. In this study, we investigated the geochemistry, geochronology, mineralogy, and phase modeling of the Qingshuiquan mafic granulite. Based on mineralogical observations and microstructures, three mineral assemblage generations were distinguished: an assemblage found as inclusions within garnet and amphibole comprising clinopyroxene + plagioclase + amphibole + quartz + ilmenite + rutile (M1); an inferred peak assemblage of garnet + clinopyroxene + plagioclase + amphibole + quartz + ilmenite ± orthopyroxene (M2) in the matrix; and a retrograde assemblage of amphibole and biotite coronae (M3) around clinopyroxene or orthopyroxene. Thermobarometric calculations and phase equilibrium modeling constrained a clockwise pressure-temperature (P-T) path for the Qingshuiquan mafic granulite with peak T conditions of 830-860 °C at 8.0-9.5 kbar. Prior to the peak T conditions, a pressure maximum of ~11 kbar at ~800 °C was recorded by rutile, ilmenite, and clinopyroxene inclusions in garnet and amphibole. The retrograde path was defined by a decompression segment followed by final cooling. The whole-rock geochemical results indicated that the protolith of the Qingshuiquan mafic granulite was similar to present-day enriched mid-oceanridge basalt (E-MORB) displaying low total rare earth element (REE) concentrations and a slight enrichment of light REEs, as well as flat high field strength element patterns in the primitive mantle-normalized trace-element diagram. Geochronologic results revealed that the protolith crystallization age of the mafic granulite is 507 ± 3 Ma, and the timing of granulite-facies metamorphic overprint is 457-455 Ma. This evidence, taken together with results from previous studies, indicates that the protolith of the Qingshuiquan mafic granulite can be interpreted as basaltic rocks of Proto-Tethys oceanic crust that experienced a first high-pressure granulite-facies imprint followed by subsequent decompression and granulite-facies overprint at slightly lower P and slightly higher T. This granulitefacies metamorphism can be attributed to the subduction of Proto-Tethys oceanic crust, which also generated numerous contemporaneous subduction-related magmatic rocks in the East Kunlun orogenic belt. Mineral chemistry, zircon U-Pb geochronology, and elemental and Sr-Nd-Pb-Hf-O isotopic data for the Early Cretaceous volcanic rocks from the Dabie and East Qinling orogens of China constrain the reworking history of the Yangtze crustal materials in the North China lithosphere. These data provide new insights into the recycling of the deepsubducted crustal materials into the mantle and the transformation process from continental subduction to collision. Our data show that the Early Cretaceous volcanic rocks are characterized by shoshonitic and high-K calc-alkaline basaltic trachyandesite, trachyandesite, and trachyte. They synchronously erupted at ca. 135-120 Ma, and have zircon in situ eHf(t) values ranging from -29.0 to -17.2, and d18O values from 4.89? to 6.84?. These samples share similar "crust-like" geochemical signatures, whole-rock enrichment in the large-ion lithophile elements, depletion in high field strength elements (Nb/La = 0.12- 0.38), highly enriched Sr-Nd isotopic compositions, as well as (206Pb/204Pb)i = 15.97- 17.59, (207Pb/204Pb)i = 15.33-15.54, and (208Pb/204Pb)i = 36.87-38.59. The eNd(t) values range from -24.4 to -15.6, -21.8 to -13.1, and -16.8 to -10.9 for the eastern and western North Huaiyang belts of the Dabie Orogen and the East Qinling Orogen, respectively. Such geochemical similarities suggest that the northward deep-subduction of Yangtze crustal materials have been reworked into the North China Craton enriched lithospheric mantle. The spatial pattern of the Early Cretaceous volcanic rocks suggests that the Yangtze subduction extended northward beyond the southern margin of the North China Craton and ran into its interior. The surface and deep lithospheric boundaries are decoupled between the Yangtze Block and North China Craton. The Early Cretaceous igneous rocks in the Dabie-East Qinling Orogen were induced in response to the post-collisional unrooting of the Triassic over-thickened lithosphere coupling. The origin and evolution of the subcontinental lithospheric mantle (SCLM) underlying orogenic belts bordering cratons, as either newly added domains or strongly reworked older cratonic lithosphere, remains controversial. This limits our understanding of deep lithospheric behavior and processes during plate convergence. Here, we use detailed petrology, whole-rock and mineral compositions, and in-situ Sr isotopic compositions for spinel-facies peridotite xenoliths from Jiaohe (northeastern China) in the southeastern Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB), which is pinched between two NE-striking Mesozoic to Cenozoic giant trans-lithospheric fault systems. These data are combined with whole-rock Re-Os isotope and platinum-group element compositions and literature data, to explore the physicochemical evolution of the regional SCLM and examine crust-SCLM relationships for this vast swath of continental lithosphere. Lherzolites predominate at Jiaohe, and have higher whole-rock Al2O3 contents than harzburgites (2.27-3.46 wt% versus 0.84-1.02 wt%), but exhibit FeO enrichment similar to harzburgite (bulk FeO up to 9.54 wt%). The lherzolitic clinopyroxenes (Cpx) have higher heavy rare earth element (HREE) levels (2.79-5.11 ppm) and Ti/Eu (3882-6864), coupled with wider variation of 87Sr/86Sr (0.7021-0.7038) and lower average ƒO2 (oxygen fugacity relative to the fayalitemagnetite- quartz buffer; FMQ-1.92 ± 0.55) compared to the harzburgites (HREE: 0.94-2.11 ppm; Ti/Eu: 163-2044; 87Sr/86Sr: 0.7032-0.7036; ƒO2 = FMQ-1.25 ± 0.20). All these observations suggest that the lherzolites were produced by adding Cpx ± spinel to the protoliths from reducing silicate melts, whereas the harzburgites may have originated from a remnant, highly depleted mantle domain that variably interacted with silica-undersaturated oxidizing melts. Bulk-rock and mineral compositional relationships as well as ƒO2 for peridotite samples from the southeastern CAOB (including Jiaohe) are similar to those of the northeastern NCC (including Huinan). Their characteristics contrast with those from the northwestern CAOB, suggesting that they belong to distinct lithospheric provinces with respect to both composition and oxidation state. Jiaohe harzburgites yield Paleoproterozoic Re depletion Os model ages (TRD up to 1.76 Ga), similar to Huinan peridotites (up to 1.92 Ga), just 170 km away, and may also represent strongly reworked cratonic mantle. By analogy with evidence from recent continental collision zones, the Jiaohe SCLM may have originated as cratonic SCLM that migrated northeastward during plate convergence along giant translithospheric fault systems. The North China craton of central Asia is a natural laboratory for investigating early Earth tectonic processes including subduction and large-scale horizontal crustal motions. However, it remains unclear how and when the North China craton formed from the amalgamation of several blocks and orogens including the Archean Western and Eastern blocks, the late Archean Central Orogenic Belt, and the Paleoproterozoic Northern Margin orogen. In this study, we integrated new and existing geological field observations, zircon and baddeleyite U-Pb geochronology, whole-rock geochemistry, and Sr-Nd-C-O isotope analyses along the northern margin of the North China craton to improve our understanding of its late Archean- Paleoproterozoic tectonic evolution. Observations show the Wuchuan ultramaficmafic complex of the Northern Margin orogen contains a mixture of mylonite gneiss, serpentinized ultramafic blocks, and amphibolite pyroxenite xenoliths. Geochronology and geochemistry results suggest that the ca. 2.55-2.5 Ga development of the Wuchuan ultramafic-mafic complex was associated with subduction, which was followed by ca. 2.39 emplacement of lamprophyre dikes during continental rifting. Subsequent Paleoproterozoic subduction magmatism, continental collision, and post-orogenic rifting between the North China craton and southern margin of the Siberian craton are evidenced by ca. 2.0 Ga arc granitoids, ca. 1.87-1.85 Ga A-type, garnet-bearing granitoids and mafic dikes, and ca. 1.86 carbonatite. Ca. 2.0 Ga collision and ca. 1.87-1.85 Ga rifting were coincident with orogen-normal left-slip shear. Our findings show that the ca. 1.9 Ga North China-Siberia collision was a key event during the assembly of the Columbia supercontinent that occurred via modern plate-tectonic processes. The Middle Jurassic intracontinental shortening event in East Asia, known as episode A of the Yanshanian Movement in the eastern North China Craton and the first phase of the Daebo Orogeny in the Korean Peninsula, respectively, has been thoroughly studied during the past two decades. However, the timing of its beginning, duration, and deformational processes are still highly controversial because few studies have probed the correlations between episode A of the Yanshanian Movement and the first phase of the Daebo Orogeny. The Tianshifu- Dongyingfang basin, located in the northern Liaodong Peninsula, is filled with complete Jurassic sequences that can be compared with those in the eastern North China Craton to the west of the Tan-Lu fault zone and the Korean Peninsula. Regional stratigraphic correlations suggest that the Tianshifu-Dongyingfang basin contains not only the syntectonic conglomerates, but also the lower and upper unconformities A1 and A2 of episode A of the Yanshanian Movement, which separated the syntectonic conglomerates from the underlying Early-Middle Jurassic coal measures and the overlying Late Jurassic red beds, respectively. Detailed field survey and structural analysis show that the development of syntectonic conglomerates and unconformities A1 and A2 were controlled by the imbricate thrust fault system in the basement, which resulted from the WNW-ESE compression inversed from the fault-slip data. The youngest detrital zircon U-Pb ages obtained near unconformities A1 and A2 show that the WNW-ESE compression of episode A of the Yanshanian Movement in the Liaodong Peninsula initiated at ca. 171 Ma and ended at least by 163 Ma. Our new structural and geochronological data, combined with data from the neighboring areas, suggest that episode A of the Yanshanian Movement and the first phase of the Daebo Orogeny belong to a single intracontinental shortening event, the compressional deformation of which was derived from the westward, lowangle subduction of the Paleo-Pacific plate and transmitted to the Korean and Liaodong Peninsulas at ca. 172-170 Ma and to the eastern North China Craton to the west of the Tan-Lu fault zone at 170-165 Ma. The South Tianshan Orogenic Belt marks the final assembly of the southern Altaids and the Karakum-Tarim Cratons. Integrated petrological, geochemical, and geochronological studies were carried out on the Akeyazi high-alumina basaltic lavas (HABs) and their host sandstones from the southern margin of the Central Tianshan Block. Given their relative high alumina contents (Al2O3 > 16 wt%) and geochemical similarity to basalts from modern arcs (e.g., Aleutian, Kamchatka, Izu, and Honshu arc), the Akeyazi basaltic lavas are classified as HABs. The Akeyazi HABs are distinguished by strong enrichment in large ion lithophile elements (LILE) and negative Nb-Ta anomalies. Furthermore, their mid-oceanic ridge basalt (MORB)-like Sr-Nd-Hf (87Sr/86Sr(i) ~0.705766, eNd(t) ~+2.5, eHf(t) ~+9.5), along with arc-like trace element patterns, indicate a petrogenesis derived from a mantle wedge metasomatized by pelagic, sediment-derived melts (2%-5% melts mixed, as confirmed by melt modeling). Zircon U-Pb ages of Akeyazi HABs and associated arc-related gabbros suggest that they were mainly erupted during ca. 415 Ma. Moreover, host sandstones of Akeyazi HABs exhibit a unimodal distribution with a peak at 480-410 Ma in the detrital zircon spectrum, which is notably distinct from those of the Central Tianshan Block, South Tianshan Accretionary Complex, and North Tarim Craton, each of which is multimodal. The maximum depositional age (MDA) of the meta-sandstones is 351.0 ± 4.3 Ma, with the weighted average of three oldest Paleozoic grains at 502 ± 26 Ma. Collectively, our data, for the first time, discloses an intra-oceanic arc setting from ca. 502-351 Ma during the northward subduction of the South Tianshan Ocean, which further reveals the history of multiple episodes of accretion in the southern Altaids. We integrate new high-resolution aeromagnetic data with seismic reflection data, well logs, satellite remote sensing, and field observations to provide a regional view of buried and exposed structures in the Southern Oklahoma Aulacogen and to assess their potential for future seismicity. Trends ranging from NW-SE to ~E-W, peaking at 330° ± 4.5° and 280° ± 3°, dominate the magnetic lineaments of the Southern Oklahoma Aulacogen, reflecting basement contacts, dikes, and faults, including a previously unmapped ~100-km-long basement fault, which is herein referred to as the Willow fault. The fault disrupts, truncates, and vertically offsets basement-related seismic reflectors and overlying Paleozoic strata up through the Permian reflectors. Surface deformation along the trend includes fault-parallel monoclinal folds, pervasive fractures, and fracture-hosted mud dikes in Permian evaporite units. These structures indicate a Permian or post-Permian reactivation of the fault. Along-strike, the Willow fault connects to the NW-trending, seismically active Meers Fault to comprise the ~180-km-long Meers-Willow fault system, which potentially represents a major seismic hazard along the Southern Oklahoma Aulacogen. Fault slip potential analyses of the mapped potential fault traces show that seismic hazards are elevated where faults have steeper dips. Given some uncertainty in the regional stress state, we also show that hazards along the NW-SE to E-W trending faults vary considerably within the uncertainty range. We propose that the Meers-Willow fault system originated as a Cambrian aulacogen-scale, basement- rooted fault that was later reactivated as a left-lateral strike-slip fault (with ~40 km displacement) during the late Paleozoic Ancestral Rocky Mountain orogeny, highlighting that lateral offset accommodated a major component of deformation during the orogen. South China, India, and their derivative blocks preserve many similar magmatic and sedimentary records related to the tectonic transition from Rodinia to Gondwana. They provide crucial insights into not only the paleogeographic correlation between them but also the geodynamic mechanism for such a transition. Our new results, combined with published data from these blocks, reveal that South China remained linked with India at least from ca. 830 Ma to ca. 510 Ma and formed the South China-India Duo, which is located at the western margin of Rodinia. The identical magmatism and sedimentation reflect that double late Neoproterozoic rift systems in the South China-India Duo developed owing to the rollback of subducting oceanic slab beneath them. For example, an intracontinental rift developed along the Jiangnan-Aravalli-Delhi fold belt, which separated the Yangtze-Marwar block from the Cathaysia-Bundelkhand block. Another intra-arc rift developed contemporaneously along the northern and western margins of the Yangtze block, through the Marwar terrane of western India, and then into the Seychelles and Madagascar terranes. Such an intra-arc rift is the most feasible explanation for the common development of coeval arclike and extension-related magmatic rocks and extensional sedimentary sequences on the western margin of the South China-India Duo, in Seychelles and Madagascar, and even at other subduction zones. The geological history of the Arctic is constrained within the framework of the assembly and breakup of three supercontinents. The first of these was preceded by the crystallization of the oldest dated rocks on Earth and consolidation of the Arctic region's Archean cratons between 2.82 and 2.54 Ga. Following the emplacement of regional mafic dike swarms between 2.51 and 2.03 Ga, the cratons were amalgamated into the Nuna (Columbia) supercontinent between 2.0 and 1.6 Ga, and the distribution of low-thermalgradient eclogite (indicative of continental subduction) and ophiolite (indicative of obduction of oceanic crust onto a continental margin) suggests that diagnostic plate-tectonic processes were well in place by the early Paleoproterozoic. Basin formation, flood basalts, and dike swarms are features of the partial(?) breakup of Nuna (Columbia) by 1.5-1.27 Ga. The extent to which specific dike swarms led to continental breakup and a rift-to-drift transition remains unclear. Assembly of the second supercontinent (Rodinia, 1.4-0.9 Ga) is recorded by a network of Grenvillian and Sveconorwegian collisional orogenic belts. Prominent features of Rodinia breakup (780-615 Ma) in the Arctic are extensive dike swarms and regional-scale glacial-periglacial deposits associated with the Sturtian (717-661 Ma) and Marinoan (ca. 645 ± 6 to ca. 635 Ma) snowball Earth glaciations. Assembly of the third supercontinent, Pangea, between 600 Ma and ca. 250 Ma, was accomplished through stitching of four orogens in the Arctic (Timan-Varanger, Caledonian, Ellesmerian, and Urals-Taymyr). Pangea breakup (rifting since 250 Ma and oceanic spreading since the Cretaceous) led to the emplacement of Cretaceous and Paleogene flood basalts, new oceanic crust in the Labrador Sea, North Atlantic Ocean, and Arctic Ocean, and orogens characterized by relatively small but far-traveled accreted terranes with provenance in Laurentia, Baltica, and Siberia. Paleogeographic similarities and geological correlations among Laurentia, Baltica, Siberia, and the North China craton suggest that Rodinia formed following incomplete breakup of Nuna (Columbia) and/or by introversion, whereas unique paleogeographic traits for Pangea within the Arctic region point to supercontinent formation by extroversion. The early-stage subduction records of the Paleo-Asian ocean are poorly preserved in the eastern segment of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB), which hinders constraints on the evolution of the whole CAOB. This study presents new age data and zircon Hf-O isotopes as well as bulk-rock geochemistry of the Wuxing mafic-ultramafic complex in the Xingkai massif in northeastern China, which has been identified as Alaskan-type complex with aspects of field occurrence, petrological and mineral assemblages, and mineral chemistry in our recently published work. The results indicate that the complex formed mainly between 517 Ma and 510 Ma with a lithological sequence of Sanying clinopyroxenite (517 Ma), then Sanying gabbro (514 Ma), and Erying hornblendite (513 Ma), and finally Erying hornblende clinopyroxenite (510 Ma). The lithological formation sequence is consistent with the intrusive relations between lithological phases and their irrelevant major element compositions and variable trace element patterns of the bulk rocks. The εHf(t) values of zircon in two samples in this study vary from from +4.45 to +7.61 and from -11.8 to +4.42, respectively and tend to be more depleted with age. These features suggest that the Wuxing complex was a product of long-term arc magmatism and experienced significant ancient crustal assimilation in early-stage magmas and negligible contamination in later ones. The presence of 1222 Ma and 706 Ma inherited zircon grains implies existence of Proterozoic basement in the Xingkai massif and its continental arc setting in Cambrian. The Wuxing complex is the oldest Alaskan-type complex found so far in the entire CAOB and is a good witness of the Paleo-Asian oceanic subduction in the easternmost CAOB. The older age of the Wuxing complex compared to the regional Hongqiling intrusion is also compatible with its Alaskan-type nature and platinum-group element mineralization, which are distinct to the Permian-Triassic Ni-Cu sulfide deposit-hosting maficultramafic intrusions in the southern CAOB. Subduction erosion has been reported recently in continental subduction-collision zones, and the response of the upper plate remains enigmatic. The Dabie-Sulu orogen is considered to have formed by deep northward subduction of the Yangtze block (lower plate) beneath the North China block (upper plate). However, within the northern Sulu ultrahigh-pressure (UHP) belt, the Haiyangsuo complex has intriguingly been accepted as Neoarchean-Paleoproterozoic metamorphic basement from the North China block, implying subduction-erosion could have occurred. Here, we examined new petrographic, mineral chemical, and published geochronological data from the Haiyangsuo mafic granulites to decipher their multiphase metamorphic evolution. Pressure-temperature (P-T) estimates from pseudosection modeling and geothermobarometry show two major metamorphic events: a medium-pressure granulite-facies event (7.3-8.3 kbar and 830-895 °C) and a later high-pressure granulite-facies event (12.2-16.6 kbar and 800-875 °C). Geochronology and mineral geochemistry link these events to Paleoproterozoic and Triassic metamorphism, respectively. Peak Triassic high-pressure granulite-facies metamorphism was followed by near-isothermal decompression and then near-isobaric cooling. These rocks derive from the upper plate and were metamorphosed at the same time as UHP eclogites, but maximum pressures were substantially lower, and P-T paths did not converge until late-stage exhumation. Evidently, metamorphic basement from the North China block was dragged to lowercrustal to upper-mantle depths (50-60 km) while that from the Yangtze block was subducted deeply, and then they were tectonically juxtaposed during exhumation. Volcanism along the continental margins is a powerful tool with which to probe the orogenic processes and crustal components underlying orogenic belts. In this study, we report the zircon ages and geochemical compositions of volcanic rocks exposed in the Luanchuan area, along the southern margin of the North China block. In previous studies, these volcanic rocks were reported to be products of Paleoproterozoic (ca. 1.75 Ga) volcanism related to rifting in the Xiong'er Mountains. Our zircon age data reveal that most volcanic rocks contain late Mesozoic zircon grains of magmatic origin, suggesting that Late Jurassic to Early Cretaceous (ca. 150-120 Ma) volcanism must have occurred in the southern Xiong'er Mountains, coeval with emplacement of large granitoid plutons along the southern margin of the North China block. These late Mesozoic volcanic rocks mainly consist of trachyandesite, andesite, dacite, and rhyolite. They vary in their major-element compositions but are relatively uniform in their normalized patterns of trace and rare earth elements and have consistently enriched Nd isotopic compositions. Numerous inherited and/or xenocrystic zircon grains of mostly Paleoproterozoic and occasionally Neoproterozoic to early Mesozoic ages were found in all of the volcanic rocks, indicating complex magma sources and/or diverse crustal rocks overlying the magma chambers. The Paleoproterozoic zircon grains originated from the Paleoproterozoic volcanic and basement rocks in the southern North China block. Notably, some volcanic rocks contained early Mesozoic, early Paleozoic, and Neoproterozoic zircon grains of both metamorphic and magmatic origin that indicate derivation from the North and South Qinling blocks, which recorded thermo-tectonic events during the closure of the Shangdan and Mianlue oceans in the early Paleozoic and early Mesozoic. Therefore, we propose that these late Mesozoic volcanic rocks originated from partial melting of crustal rocks and are composed partly of the subducted basement of the Qinling orogenic belt underneath the southern Xiong'er Mountains due to asthenospheric upwelling in an extensional setting. The subduction of the paleo-Pacific plate beneath the North China block has been well documented in terms of magmatic activity, geophysical investigations, and numerical modeling, but the timing of its onset along the eastern Asian margin and the tectonic processes involved remain poorly understood. We have now reconstructed the structural evolution and sedimentation of the Shihuiyao-Gangzidian-Yuantai region of the southern Liaodong Peninsula, on the overriding plate at the eastern Asian margin, using geologic mapping, borehole data sets, field structural studies, and zircon geochronology. In the Shihuiyao area, based on geologic mapping and drilling, top-to-the-NW thrust faults truncated earlier top-to-the-NE reverse faults and then were subsequently overprinted by normal faults. In the Gangzidian area, geologic mapping and 40 boreholes allowed us to construct eight cross sections revealing the top-to-the-WNW/W thrust faults from the surface to a depth of at least 0.5 km; the sections show that the thrust faults extend to the basement and that subsequent normal faults dip subvertically. In the Yuantai thrust system, the top-to-the-NW thrusts, expressed as four tectonic windows and a duplex on the map scale, were intruded by late porphyry and diabase sills. Integration of the data from the three study areas allowed us to identify one angular unconformity and at least two phases of later deformation (D1 and D2). The pre-D1 unconformity is marked by a foreland basin that was filled with Middle Jurassic clastic rocks that unconformably overlie the Neoproterozoic and Cambrian basement. The D1 deformation is represented by NE-SW-striking thrust faults that displaced Neoproterozoic or Cambrian strata onto the Middle Jurassic strata. The D2 deformation is defined by kilometer-scale, high-angle normal faults with variable dips and strikes. Although three samples from the Middle Jurassic clastic rocks did not yield ideal maximum deposition ages (MDAs; ca. 246 Ma), a porphyry dike and a diabase sill that intruded the Yuantai thrust system and remain undeformed yielded zircon U-Pb ages of ca. 124 and 117 Ma, respectively. Detrital zircon geochronology yielded a MDA of ca. 129 Ma for Cretaceous deposits in graben structures with hanging walls formed by D2 normal faults. Thus, the D1 and D2 deformation events can be constrained to the Late Jurassic and Early Cretaceous, respectively (D1 between ca. 174 and 124 Ma, and D2 after ca. 129 Ma). The provenance of the detritus in the Middle Jurassic Wafangdian Formation suggests that the deposits in the retroarc foreland basin had a source in a thrust sheet of the Paleoproterozoic basement, but the source of deposits in a minigraben (D2) was possibly the nearby Neoproterozoic rocks. Therefore, we reconstructed the retroarc foreland basin and fold-and-thrust belt of the southern Liaodong Peninsula in terms of a subduction margin and constrained a Toarcian-Aptian (ca. 174-124 Ma) age for the onset of paleo-Pacific plate subduction. We interpret the foreland basin system and the subsequent synconvergent extension to have been the result of slab flattening and rollback during episodic subduction of the paleo-Pacific plate. During the Tertiary evolution of the Western Mediterranean subduction system, a migrating foreland basin system developed between the Maghrebian orogenic belt and the adjacent African Craton. However, a comprehensive reconstruction of the foreland basin systems of the Rif Chain is still missing. By integrating field observations with quantitative biostratigraphic data from calcareous nannofossil assemblages, sandstone composition, and detrital zircon U-Pb geochronology from selected stratigraphic successions, we reconstruct the foreland basin system that developed in the early Miocene in front of the growing Rif orogen. The successions analyzed are representative of (1) the classical "Numidian Facies" from the Intrarifian Tanger Unit and (2) the Numidian-like deposits (mixed successions) of the "Mérinides Facies" from the "Maghrebian Flysch Basin" and the "Beliounis Facies" from the Predorsalian Unit. Our petrographic analyses and detrital zircon U-Pb ages show that the quartzarenites of the "Numidian Facies" originated from the African Craton, whereas the sublitharenites and feldspathic litharenites from the Mérinides and Beliounis Facies originated from a cratonic area and the exhuming Rif Chain. Our biostratigraphic analyses suggest a simultaneous arrival of the quartz grains in the Numidian, Mérinides, and Beliounis deposits, which indicates that their deposition occurred at ~1 m.y. (ca. 20-19 Ma, early Burdigalian) and allows us to delineate the early Burdigalian foreland basin system of the Rif Chain. The foreland depozone received the "Numidian Facies," the foredeep-hosted ~2000 m of the "Mérinides Facies" and the Beni Ider Flysch, whereas the wedge-top depozone was characterized by deposition of the "Beliounis Facies." The Numidian Sandstones and the Numidian-like deposits analyzed in Morocco show the same age as similar deposits from Algeria, Tunisia, and Sicily, which suggests a comparable early Burdigalian tectono-sedimentary evolution along the southern branch of the Western Mediterranean subductionrelated orogen. The quantification of rates for the competing forces of tectonic uplift and erosion has important implications for understanding topographic evolution. Here, we quantify the complex interplay between tectonic uplift, topographic development, and erosion recorded in the hanging walls of several active reverse faults in the Ventura basin, southern California, USA. We use cosmogenic 26Al/10Be isochron burial dating and 10Be surface exposure dating to construct a basin-wide geochronology, which includes burial dating of the Saugus Formation: an important, but poorly dated, regional Quaternary strain marker. Our ages for the top of the exposed Saugus Formation range from 0.36 +0.18/-0.22 Ma to 1.06 +0.23/-0.26 Ma, and our burial ages near the base of shallow marine deposits, which underlie the Saugus Formation, increase eastward from 0.60 +0.05/-0.06 Ma to 3.30 +0.30/-0.41 Ma. Our geochronology is used to calculate rapid long-term reverse fault slip rates of 8.6-12.6 mm yr-1 since ca. 1.0 Ma for the San Cayetano fault and 1.3-3.0 mm yr-1 since ca. 1.0 Ma for the Oak Ridge fault, which are both broadly consistent with contemporary reverse slip rates derived from mechanical models driven by global positioning system (GPS) data. We also calculate terrestrial cosmogenic nuclide (TCN)-derived, catchment-averaged erosion rates that range from 0.05-1.14 mm yr-1 and discuss the applicability of TCN-derived, catchment-averaged erosion rates in rapidly uplifting, landslide-prone landscapes. We compare patterns in erosion rates and tectonic rates to fluvial response times and geomorphic landscape parameters to show that in young, rapidly uplifting mountain belts, catchments may attain a quasi-steady-state on timescales of <105 years even if catchmentaveraged erosion rates are still adjusting to tectonic forcing.
