Much of the Martian surface is covered by a weathering layer (regolith or soil) produced by long-term surface processes such as impact gardening, eolian erosion, water weathering, and glacial modifications. China’s first Martian mission, Tianwen-1, employed the Mars Rover Penetrating Radar (RoPeR) to unveil the detailed structure of the regolith layer and assess its loss tangent. The RoPeR radargram revealed the local regolith layer to be highly heterogeneous and geologically complex and characterized by structures that resemble partial or complete crater walls and near-surface impact lenses at a very shallow depth. However, comparable radar data from the Lunar far side are rather uniform, despite the two surfaces being geologically contemporary. The close-to-surface crater presented in this study shows no detectable surface expression, which suggests an accelerated occultation rate for small craters on the surface of Mars as compared to the rate on the Moon. This is probably due to the relentless eolian processes on the Martian surface that led to the burial of the crater and thus shielded it from further erosion. Provenance of the silt on the Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP) is essential for the paleo-environmental interpretation of the thick eolian deposits, but is highly debated. The controversy mainly comes from the multi-interpretation of similar geochemical signatures of potential source areas (PSAs). This work applies the (234U/238U) activity ratio as a new source tracer, because it can distinguish particles with different transporting and recycling histories regardless of petrological origin. The (234U/238U) activity ratio of a fine particle decreases progressively after its production because of the increasing fraction of the 234U precursor ejected out of the particle surface, due to the recoiling effect associated with the α decay of 238U. Distinct spatial patterns of (234U/238U) can be found for the sediments in PSAs and the loess on the CLP. When combined with other constraints, the new findings indicate that the CLP loess can be best explained by the mixing of three end-member dust sources on the northwestern transportation trajectory, namely (1) the Gobi Desert, (2) the Ordos Desert, and (3) the Qilian Mountains. A contribution from the Yellow River is also possible but may not be significant. The identified source partition implies that the eolian silt is mainly produced by processes in the 'High Asia' mountains and, partly, by erosion of the exposed clastic rocks. This new constraint on the production and transportation of eolian dust has great implications for the proxy interpretation of loess related to atmospheric circulation, dust accumulation rate, and chemical indexes. Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) Curiosity rover data are used to describe the morphology of desiccation cracks observed in ancient lacustrine strata at Gale crater, Mars, and to interpret their paleoenvironmental setting. The desiccation cracks indicate subaerial exposure of lacustrine facies in the Sutton Island member of the Murray formation. In association with ripple cross-stratification and possible eolian cross-bedding, these facies indicate a transition from longer-lived perennial lakes recorded by older strata to younger lakes characterized by intermittent exposure. The transition from perennial to episodically exposed lacustrine environments provides evidence for local to regional climate change that can help constrain Mars climate models. Fertilization of the ocean by eolian dust and icebergs is an effective mechanism to enhance primary productivity. In particular, high-nutrient, low-chlorophyll (HNLC) areas where phytoplankton growth is critically iron-limited, such as the subarctic Pacific Ocean and the Southern Ocean, are proposed to respond to increases in bioavailable Fe supply with enhanced phytoplankton productivity and carbon export to the seafloor. While Fe-fertilization from dust is widely acknowledged to explain a higher export production during glacial periods in the Southern Ocean, paleoceanographic records supporting links between productivity and eolian dust and/or icebergs in the North Pacific are scarce. By combining independent proxies indicative of ice-sheet dynamics and ocean productivity from a single marine sedimentary record (Integrated Ocean Drilling Program [IODP] Site U1417), we present a comprehensive data set of phytoplankton response to different fertilization mechanisms in the subarctic northeast Pacific between 1.5 and 0.5 Ma, including the Mid Pleistocene Transition. Importantly, the timing of the fertilization events is more strongly controlled by local ice-sheet extent than by glacial-interglacial climate variability. Our findings indicate that fertilization by glacigenic debris results in productivity events in HNLC areas adjacent to ice sheets, and that this mechanism may represent an important, yet rarely considered, driver of phytoplankton growth. Ejecta from impact craters on Venus are a major source of fine-grained materials across the planet, and crater spatial distribution has been studied as a guide to the relative age and resurfacing rates of large regions. Of particular interest is the potential intersection of distal crater deposits and tesserae, highly deformed landforms that may be the oldest materials on Venus. The composition of tesserae is unknown, but is key to understanding whether water played a role in crustal differentiation. Thus, tesserae are ideal sites for future landed missions to identify possible felsic materials, but the short lifespan of surface landers means that efforts must be made to avoid contaminating surface materials from craters. Here we develop a method to detect distal crater ejecta on tessera terrain across Venus using NASA Magellan radar data. Our results show that fine-grained ejecta are unevenly distributed in the tesserae with respect to nearby craters. Many tesserae within a few hundred kilometers of plains craters do not have evidence for thick (>5-10 cm) mantling material, indicating that eolian or mass-wasting processes have moved the debris off the highland ridge slopes. At Sudenitsa Tesserae, within the young Beta-Atla-Themis region, we observe a radar signature of mantling debris, but there is no apparent source crater to which this material can be traced. We infer that the source crater has been resurfaced by volcanic activity within the past 80 m.y., and suggest that similar fine-grained ejecta deposits may have built up over time in other tesserae across Venus. The biogeochemical impacts of iron-rich dust to the oceans are known for Earth's recent record but unexplored for deep time, despite recognition of large ancient dust fluxes, particularly during the late Paleozoic. We report a unique Fe relationship for Upper Pennsylvanian mudrock of eolian origin that records lowstand (glacial) conditions within a carbonate buildup of western equatorial Pangaea (western United States) well removed from other detrital inputs. Here, reactive Fe unambiguously linked to dust is enriched without a corresponding increase in total Fe. More broadly, data from thick coeval loess deposits of western equatorial Pangaea show the same marked enrichment in reactive Fe. This enrichment--atypical compared to modern marine, fluvial, glacial, loess, and soil sediments--suggests an enhancement of the reactivity of the internal Fe pool that increased the bioavailability of the Fe for marine primary production. Regardless of the mechanism behind this enhancement, our data in combination with other evidence for high dust fluxes imply delivery of extraordinarily large amounts of biogeochemically reactive Fe to glacial-stage late Paleozoic seas, and modeling of this indicates major impacts on carbon cycling and attendant climatic feedbacks. Cenozoic climate has changed markedly from a warm, wet climate to the present cool, dry glacial-interglacial cycles. The largest of these cooling steps is thought to have taken place across the Eocene-Oligocene transition. Terrestrial airborne eolian loess is a direct result of land aridification; therefore, the prolonged formation of thick eolian loess deposits provides a key to aridification history in the geological past. However, the oldest eolian loess in the Asian interior has been dated to only 25-22 Ma. Here we present new sedimentological, geochemical, and magnetostratigraphic data from Cenozoic sections in southwestern Mongolia to show that the earliest eolian dust accumulation occurred by 34 Ma, ~10 m.y. earlier than currently believed. We suggest that this oldest eolian dust accumulation provides direct evidence for enhanced aridification across the Eocene-Oligocene transition in Central Asia; this is explicable by reduced moisture transport caused by prevailing westerlies during retreat of the Neotethys Ocean. Polygonal patterned ground is a dominant geomorphic feature in the McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica. In central Beacon Valley, polygons are considered to be ancient expressions of stagnant surface processes and are thought to be stable for millions of years. However, the actual rate at which these polygons form and alter is not known. We describe a detailed cross section of a polygon, make several depth profiles of meteoric 10Be along this cross section, and use optically stimulated luminescence to date a few key samples at the center of this polygon. While confirming conclusions of previous studies that the polygon shoulders are stable on a 100 k.y. time scale and experience little vertical sediment mixing, our results also give clear evidence of eolian transport to the polygon center, leading to a sediment accumulation rate of 3 cm k.y.-1 over the past 15 k.y. Moreover, the data suggest that the accumulated material is locally derived, and, hence, surface erosion of the polygon shoulders must exist that cannot be recorded by meteoric 10Be. Ancient sediments provide archives of climate and habitability on Mars. Gale Crater, the landing site for the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL), hosts a 5-km-high sedimentary mound (Mount Sharp/Aeolis Mons). Hypotheses for mound formation include evaporitic, lacustrine, fluviodeltaic, and aeolian processes, but the origin and original extent of Gale's mound is unknown. Here we show new measurements of sedimentary strata within the mound that indicate ~3° outward dips oriented radially away from the mound center, inconsistent with the first three hypotheses. Moreover, although mounds are widely considered to be erosional remnants of a once crater-filling unit, we find that the Gale mound's current form is close to its maximal extent. Instead we propose that the mound's structure, stratigraphy, and current shape can be explained by growth in place near the center of the crater mediated by wind-topography feedbacks. Our model shows how sediment can initially accrete near the crater center far from crater-wall katabatic winds, until the increasing relief of the resulting mound generates mound-flank slope winds strong enough to erode the mound. The slope wind enhanced erosion and transport (SWEET) hypothesis indicates mound formation dominantly by aeolian deposition with limited organic carbon preservation potential, and a relatively limited role for lacustrine and fluvial activity. The NASA Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) rover, Curiosity, has safely landed near a 35-km-long dark dune field in Gale Crater on Mars. This dune field crosses the landing site from the northeast to the southwest and lies along Curiosity's traverse to Aeolis Mons. Here we present the first evidence of recent aeolian activity in the form of ripple and dune migration, and further estimate wind directions within the dune field through analysis of ripple and dune morphologies and the Mars Regional Atmospheric Modeling System (MRAMS). We measured a minimum ripple migration rate of 0.66 m per Earth year, and dune migration rate of 0.4 m per Earth year, in the southwest portion of the field. A strongly bidirectional ripple crestline orientation, nearly orthogonal dune slipfaces, and linear seif or oblique dunes indicate a bidirectional wind regime with winds mainly coming from the ENE and from the northwest; however, MRAMS results indicate primary winds from the ENE. Our constraints on the wind regime provide the unique opportunity to use ground measurements from MSL to test the accuracy of winds predicted from orbital data. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Continuous observational monitoring of a study site in eastern Christchurch, New Zealand, following the 2010 Mw 7.1 Darfield earthquake has recorded ten distinct liquefaction episodes in the mainshock-aftershock sequence. Three nearby accelerometers allow calibration between the geological expressions of liquefaction and the intensity of earthquake-induced surface ground motion at the site. Sand blow formation was generated by Mw 5.2-7.1 earthquakes with Mw 7.5-normalized peak ground accelerations (PGA7.5) of > 0.057 g (acceleration due to gravity). Silt drapes between successive sand blow deposits provide markers for delineating distinct liquefaction-inducing earthquakes in the geologic record. However, erosion quickly modifies the surface of sand blows into alluvial and aeolian forms that complicate geologic diagnosis. The two feeder-dike generations identified in subsurface investigations significantly underrepresent the number of liquefaction-inducing earthquakes due to extensive dike reactivation. Low albedo sediments cover >107 km² in the northern lowlands of Mars, but the composition and origin of these widespread deposits have remained ambiguous despite many previous investigations. Here we use near-infrared spectra acquired by the Mars Express OMEGA (Observatoire pour la Minéralogie, l'Eau, les Glaces, et l'Activité) imaging spectrometer to show that these sediments exhibit spectral characteristics that are consistent with both high abundances of iron-bearing glass and silica-enriched leached rinds on glass. This interpretation is supported by observations of low-albedo soil grains with possible rinds at the Phoenix Mars Lander landing site in the northern lowlands. By comparison with the extensive glass-rich dune fields and sand sheets of Iceland, we propose an explosive volcanic origin for these glass-rich sediments. We also propose that the glassy remnant rinds on the sediments are the result of postdepositional alteration, as these rinds are commonly formed in arid terrestrial volcanic environments during water-limited, moderately acidic leaching. These weathered, glass-rich deposits in the northern lowlands are also colocated with the strongest concentrations of a major global compositional surface type previously identified in mid-infrared spectra, suggesting that they may be representative of global processes. Our results provide potential confirmation of models suggesting that explosive volcanism has been widespread on Mars, and also raise the possibilities that glass-rich volcaniclastics are a major source of eolian sand on Mars and that widespread surficial aqueous alteration has occurred under Amazonian climatic conditions. Quartz sand in the eastern Mediterranean coastal plain is supplied through an extended transport system, which includes the Nile River, east Mediterranean longshore currents, and inland eolian transport. While the concentrations of cosmogenic nuclides (26Al and 10Be), and their ratio, in modern sand deposited along the coast of the eastern Mediterranean reflect the combined effect of exposure and burial during transport, the concentrations of these nuclides in buried sands are the result of decay of this initial dosing. Samples of modern exposed sand (n = 3) collected from the coastal plain of Israel yield an average 26Al/10Be ratio of 4.8 ± 0.2, significantly lower than the expected ratio of 6.8 for exposed quartz grains at the surface. A similar ratio of 4.5 ± 0.3 was measured in a late Pleistocene sand sample, indicating similar exposure-burial histories during transport in spite of the difference in climatic conditions. The results imply a steady, preburial cosmogenic nuclide ratio related to the Nile River's ability, through storage and recycling, to buffer the effects of climatic and tectonic perturbations on cosmogenic nuclide concentrations in the transported quartz. Current models of landscape response to Holocene climate change in midcontinent North America largely reconcile Earth orbital and atmospheric climate forcing with pollen-based forest histories on the east and eolian chronologies in Great Plains grasslands on the west. However, thousands of sand dunes spread across 12,000 km² in eastern upper Michigan (EUM), more than 500 km east of the present forest-prairie ecotone, present a challenge to such models. We use 65 optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) ages on quartz sand deposited in silt caps (n = 8) and dunes (n = 57) to document eolian activity in EUM. Dune building was widespread ca. 10-8 ka, indicating a sharp, sustained decline in forest cover during that period. This decline was roughly coincident with hydrologic closure of the upper Great Lakes, but temporally inconsistent with most pollen-based models that imply canopy closure throughout the Holocene. Early Holocene forest openings are rarely recognized in pollen sums from EUM because faint signatures of non-arboreal pollen are largely obscured by abundant and highly mobile pine pollen. Early Holocene spikes in nonarboreal pollen are recorded in cores from small ponds, but suggest only a modest extent of forest openings. OSL dating of dune emplacement provides a direct, spatially explicit archive of greatly diminished forest cover during a very dry climate in eastern midcontinent North America ca. 10-8 ka. The Chinese Loess Plateau of central Asia is composed of interbedded loess and paleosol layers, deposited during glacial and interglacial cycles, respectively, during the past ~2.5 m.y. Understanding the provenance of loess is fundamental to reconstructing wind patterns during Quaternary glacial periods. We determined and compared U-Pb ages on zircon crystals from Loess Plateau strata and potential source areas. The results indicate that the loess was largely derived from the Qaidam Basin and the northern Tibetan Plateau to the west, both of which exhibit spatially extensive geomorphic landforms indicative of past (interpreted as pre-Holocene) wind erosion and/or deflation by westerly winds. This challenges the current paradigm that the loess of the Chinese Loess Plateau was largely sourced from deserts located to the northwest, as observed in the modern interglacial climate. We propose that during glacial periods, the mean annual positions of the polar jet streams were shifted equatorward, resulting in more southerly tracks for dust-generating storms and suppression of the East Asian monsoon by inhibiting the subtropical jet from shifting northward across the Tibetan Plateau. Sandcracks, which are ubiquitous in Holocene eolian and beach backshore carbonate grain-stone on Alligator Point, Cat Island, Bahamas, resemble polygonal mudcracks, but formed in ooid sand without muddy matrix. In experiments on Cat Island beach sand, sediment surfaces cracked polygonally in the absence of mud or biofilms while drying at room temperature due to contraction generated by capillary effects related to surface tension attraction of interstitial water. Gravitational collapse of irregular open pores and repacking of sand grains due to loss of cohesion between particles caused by evaporation of water enhance the cracking process and appearance of polygons by providing space for cracks to expand. The polygons are held together by any remaining capillary moisture and associated meniscus cement, which precipitates as the sand dries. Polygonal sandcracks can be preserved by rapid lithification of carbonate sand, but have been documented only rarely from other localities because their formation requires well-sorted, well-rounded spherical grains rather than those making up the more common, heterogeneous skeletal and peloidal sediment in carbonate settings. Interpretation of this primary sedimentary desiccation structure provides new insights into sedimentation and diagenesis of ooid-rich deposits and can aid in recognizing ancient subaerial exposure horizons. Gravel-bed rivers organize to a threshold state in which the fluid stress during dominant flow conditions slightly exceeds the critical value. These channels change fairly abruptly to sand-dominated beds, facilitated by a paucity of sediment in the range of 1-10 mm. Eolian sediments are also bimodal; sand seas often transition rapidly downwind to silty loess deposits. In this paper we hypothesize that both transitions result from the same processes: (1) production of fine sediment by spallation from saltation abrasion of coarse grains, and (2) segregation of fine and coarse modes by suspension and saltation transport, respectively. We demonstrate that gravel rivers and eolian dune fields are dynamically equivalent in terms of threshold transport (Shields stress) and collision dynamics (Stokes number). While abrasion may not be the dominant cause of downstream fining of fluvial gravels, the reduction of collision efficiency with grain diameter sets a lower limit on gravel size, leading to a grain-size gap. The collision efficiency hypothesis potentially reconciles conflicting studies on the importance of sorting and lithology in downstream fining. The Asian interior has the largest mid-latitude arid zone in the Northern Hemisphere, and so has become increasingly attractive for studying the initiation and the past extent of aridifi cation in this zone. Given the enormousness of the Asian interior, it remains unclear how old and extensive the eolian deposits might have been, and what wind regimes have been responsible for the formation of the mid-latitude arid zone. Here we report new eolian records of widespread Tertiary eolian deposits in a region far from the Chinese Loess Plateau, the giant Junggar inland basin of northwestern China. Our results demonstrate that the earliest eolian deposition initiated ca. 24 Ma. We interpret that the Tertiary eolian dust in the Junggar Basin was transported by westerly winds, possibly from areas in Kazakhstan; the dust differs from the airborne dust transported by winter monsoon winds from the deserts of Mongolia and northern China that accumulated on the Loess Plateau. These results further reveal that the climate pattern, similar to that of the present, has prevailed at least since the latest Oligocene in Central Asia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

High-resolution laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectroscopy scanning of resin-embedded laminated sediments is used to detail variability in the composition and magnitude of recent eolian dust deposition in the Eastern Mediterranean. The composition of dust accumulating in the anoxic Atalante basin varies in response to the strength of the summer blocking mode of Mediterranean climate. Dust sources located upwind on the westerly airflow are favored during phases of weaker blocking (hence stronger summer westerlies). This mode is in turn correlated to the pronounced multidecadal oscillation in Mediterranean sea-surface temperature (related to the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation), suggesting that coupled oceanatmosphere dynamics control the large-scale transport of dust in the region. Variable precipitation in dust source regions may also exert an influence on the relative flux of dust from each source, and hence the net composition of dust deposited in the basin. Persistent oscillations in the composition of deeper sediments indicate that the basin offers a high-potential archive for reconstruction of climate-controlled variability in dust transport prior to the instrumental era. Controversy exists regarding the sources of the eolian dust for the immense Loess Plateau of north-central China, the largest accumulation of windblown bess in the world. Because the bess accumulation rate, unit thickness, and particle size all decrease from northwest to southeast, it has long been thought that the northern deserts, especially the Mongolian Gobi, are the major bess source, a view supported by newly applied mineralogical provenance techniques (electron spin resonance, ESR). Here, we examine surface samples from the Gobi Desert and compare their magnetic and geochemical properties with those of last glacial bess samples from across the Loess Plateau region. The mineralogy, geochemistry, and magnetic properties of Gobi Desert samples are variable (most likely reflecting local lithobogical complexity), distinctive, and, critically, nonoverlapping with the notably homogenous characteristics of the last glacial boesses spanning the Loess Plateau. It is likelythat the source areas for the plateau encompass a much larger area than any one proximal desert region, in order to account for (1) the extreme degree of mixing, (2) the volume of bess generated and transported, and (3) the mineralogical and magnetic mismatch evident here between the Mongolian Gobi samples and the last glacial bess. Ground-penetrating radar and luminescence dating studies of a large, complex, linear dune in the northern part of the Namib Sand Sea provide new information on the age and internal sedimentary structures of these dunes, with important implications for interpretations of paleoclimates and the rock record of eolian sandstones. The dune is a composite feature formed during several episodes of construction, including a hiatus of almost 2000 yr. The oldest sands within the dune are 5700 yr old, indicating complete turnover of sand during the Holocene. The dune has moved laterally by ∼300 m during the past 2500 yr, proving lateral migration of a large linear dune. Dune construction has been affected by climate change, and we attribute the hiatus to increased rainfall and vegetation, which largely halted sand movement and dune building in the Namib Desert during the middle Holocene. Dune fields and loess deposits of the Great Plains of North America contain stratigraphic records of eolian activity that can be used to extend the short observational record of drought. We present a 10,000 yr reconstruction of dune activity and dust production in the central Great Plains region, based on 95 optically stimulated luminescence ages. The integration of data from both eolian sand and loess is an important new aspect of this record. Clusters of ages define episodes of extensive eolian activity, which we interpret as a response to frequent severe drought, at 1.0-0.7 ka and 2.3-4.5 ka (with peaks centered on 2.5 and 3.8 ka); sustained eolian activity occurred from 9.6 to 6.5 ka. Parts of this record may be consistent with hypotheses linking Hobocene drought to sea surface temperature anomalies in the Pacific or Atlantic oceans, or to the El Niño-Southern Oscillation phenomenon, but the record as a whole is difficult to reconcile with any of these hypotheses. Identifying terrigenous sources in deep-sea sediments may reveal temporal trends in paleocirculation and the relative role of eolian, upwelled, and hemipelagic Fe sources to surface waters. Bulk elemental and isotopic geochemistry of deep-sea sediments recovered during Ocean Drilling Program Leg 177 in the south-eastern Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean reveal several important aspects of paleocirculation and terrigenous provenance. The sites studied span 43°-53° S and represent different oceanographic settings relative to regional hydrography and sediment type. Bulk sediment geochemistry indicates that terrigenous provenance varied over the past 600 k.y. Site 1089, the northernmost site, exhibits clear glacial-interglacial variability in provenance, while provenance appears to vary regardless of climate state at the more southerly sites (Site 1093 and 1094). Nd and Sr isotopes and Sm/Nd ratios of the terrigenous fraction indicate that study sites have geochemically distinguishable provenance. Nd and Sr isotopes further suggest that Sites 1089 and 1094 both contain detrital components that originated in South America over the past 30 k.y.; however, Site 1089 is also influenced by southern African sources and the strength of the Agulhas Current. Formation of desert pavement and accretionary soils are intimately linked in arid environments. Well-sorted fallout scoria lapilli at Lathrop Wells (75-80 ka) and Red Cone (ca. 1 Ma) volcanoes (southern Nevada) formed an excellent parent material for pavement, allowing infiltration of eolian silt and fine sand that first clogged the pore space of underlying tephra and then aggraded and developed vesicular A (Av) horizons. Variations in original pyroclast sizes provide insight into minimum and maximum clast sizes that promote pavement and soil formation: pavement becomes ineffective when clasts can saltate under the strongest winds, while clasts larger than coarse lapilli are unable to form an interlocking pavement that promotes silt accumulation (necessary for Av development). Contrary to predictions that all pavements above altitudes of ∼400 m would have been reset in their development after late Pleistocene vegetation advances, the soils and pavements show clear differences in maturity between the two volcanoes. This indicates that either the pavements and/or soils develop slowly over many tens of thousands of years and then are very stable, or, if they are disrupted by vegetation advances, subsequent pavements are re-established with successively more mature characteristics. Recently, the first late Miocene-Pliocene eolian deposits from the western Chinese Loess Plateau have been reported. These deposits would complement the eolian record between Quaternary loess-paleosol sequences and Miocene loess sequences, if their wind-blown origin could be documented. However, although several lines of evidence indicate the eolian origin of this sequence, it is still necessary to address this issue through further efforts. Among these, biological approaches are of particular value. Here we analyze the composition and preservation conditions of mollusk assemblages in the Dongwan section. Our results show that all mollusk fossil individuals are preserved in perfect condition without indicating any reworking. All identifiable mollusk species are terrestrial, and are mostly identical to those identified in the Quaternary loess-paleosol sequences of the Chinese Loess Plateau. Generally, the cold-aridiphilous species are dominant in the loess layers, while thermo-humidiphilous species are mostly encountered in the paleosols. The close similarity of the mollusk record in both the Dongwan late Miocene-Pliocene deposits and the Quaternary loess sequence in the Chinese Loess Plateau supports the supposition that the Dongwan section is a typical loess-paleosol sequence, and is, without any doubt, of wind-blown origin. Climate simulations for the Last Glacial Maximum using general circulation models typically show a glacial anticyclone that produced an easterly wind anomaly south of the North American ice sheets. Evidence of this phenomenon has not been found in eolian sedimentary deposits that record surface wind patterns. Luminescence ages of loess and accompanying paleoecologic records from opal phytoliths and paleosol units across the Columbia Plateau, Washington State, United States, document a decrease, up to fivefold, in regional dust production and accumulation from 35 ka to 15 ka. This interval corresponds to simulations indicating that a glacial anticyclone weakened prevailing south-southwesterly winds that have shaped the eolian landscape of the Columbia Plateau since at least 75 ka. At the same time that the glacial anticyclone suppressed dust production and accumulation, enhanced cold and dry conditions resulted in soil formation dominated by intense bioturbation in periglacial steppe accompanied by shallow calcium carbonate precipitation. This is the first evidence from eolian deposits in North America verifying that the glacial anticyclone altered surface wind patterns and affected eolian systems during the Last Glacial Maximum. Eolian landforms in Estancia basin, central New Mexico, record two episodes of extreme drought and low groundwater levels during the middle Holocene (7000-5400 [sup 14]C yr B.P.), followed by a rise in the water table through the late Holocene. Blowouts and associated lunettes formed when water levels fell below the desiccated floor of pluvial Lake Estancia, allowing widespread deflation. Elevation of the water table in the basin is regulated by a balance between evaporation from playas that occupy the blowouts and recharge of aquifers in the adjacent Manzano Mountains. Isotopic analyses of modern precipitation and groundwater reveal that recharge originates primarily as winter moisture, which is amplified during El Niños and diminished during La Ni˜as. Thus, changes in the elevation of a reconstructed Holocene water table may reflect systematic changes in El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) circulation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

At Capitol Reef National Park, Utah, 5-m-high stromatolites are present locally on interdune carbonate lenses in the Early Jurassic Navajo Sandstone. The stromatolites display both finely laminated and fenestral internal fabrics, and grew along south-facing interdune margins. These stromatolites formed during a high-water-table episode engendered by a dune-dammed paleodrainage in a stabilized Navajo erg.
