We explore the assumption that uplift drives erosion and hence, more dissected (eroded) terrains may indicate areas subject to more intense uplift than others, especially if other factors such as elevation and geology can be demonstrated as inconsistent with the spatial pattern of dissection. Geomorphometry and statistics are employed to recognize the enhanced erosional signal within a medium-altitude mountain terrain of the Sudetes in Central Europe, considered as a representative for moderately uplifted areas of complex bedrock diversity. This signal is understood as a meso-scale reflection of relief properties, whereas the recognition of homogeneous terrain units, different in terms of strength of erosional signal, is carried out by means of multi-criteria terrain classification, involving Principal Component Analysis and k-means grouping. Four groups covering 45% of the area have been identified. They were quantitatively compared with independent variables of altitude, lithology, structural units and rock strength, and also assessed in relation to rainfall pattern. It is concluded that their dependence on altitude and geology is only partial. Then, three types of dissected terrain are distinguished and interpreted in terms of uplift intensity, rock strength as a factor modulating erosional response to uplift and timescale. The spatial distribution of these types of terrain indicates several isolated 'hot spots' of erosional dissection on predominantly strong rocks, linked by less elevated areas, underlain by rocks of variable strength. The former are considered as having longer history of uplift and dissection, dated back to the late Palaeogene, whereas the latter record more recent history of endo -exogenic interactions, possibly since the late Miocene. The presence of canyon-like valleys incised into planar or gently sloping relief may indicate the most recent pulse of relief rejuvenation. Closed depressions (CDs) are typical geomorphological features of the loess belt in Europe. CDs have been reported in several regions of the European loess belt, where they are described as hollows, mardeles, wymoki, crovuri, bludtsa and zapadiny. The natural and anthropogenic origins of CDs are debated in literature. Moreover, no comprehensive review of the geomorphic properties or the evolution of these depressions exists. Therefore this paper reviews the characteristics of CDs in the European loess belt and attempts to better understand their genesis based on detailed case studies. The main morphometric features as well as sediment deposits within CDs in several sub-regions of Europe were analysed and compared. Morphometric properties of CDs from the West European and East European loess belt were investigated through a comparison of CDs from two representative regions, i.e. East Poland and Central Belgium. In both study areas, CDs under cropland are similar. However, a comparison of morphological features of CDs under forest, revealed clear differences, suggesting a different origin of CDs from both regions. Infilled sediments in CDs show various litho-genetical features in different regions of the European loess belt. The morphometric features, ages and stratigraphy of infillings clearly indicate that both anthropogenic and natural processes have shaped these landforms within the loess belt of Europe. CDs observed in Eastern Europe may have a very different origin than those documented in Western Europe. Detailed analysis of CDs in Poland and in neighbouring regions of East Europe, suggest that CDs are natural landforms: thermokarst, deflation and dissolution of loess are reported as probable genetic processes. In contrast, several studies in Western Europe indicate a dominant anthropogenic origin (i.e. digging of calcareous loess or marls, bomb and mining craters, collapse of underground limestone quarries), although CDs formed by natural processes (i.e. piping, dissolution of limestone and salt lenses below the loess cover) are reported as well. CDs act as important archives, allowing one to reconstruct both natural and anthropogenic processes operating in the past. As CDs store most sediments eroded within their catchment they provide ideal sediment traps to assess long-term erosion rates in these environments which have hitherto been under-researched. More research is needed to unravel the genesis and evolution of these depressions to better understand the importance of the Late Glacial and Holocene stages for the morphogenesis of the loess belt in Europe. The Orlickie-Bystrzyckie Mountains Block (OBMB) is a medium-size, transboundary morphostructure within the Sudetes range in Central Europe, subject to non-uniform uplift in the late Cenozoic. Geologically, it consists of Variscan basement and Permian to Cretaceous sedimentary cover. This paper attempts to unravel its morphotectonic history and decipher the spatial pattern of uplift and erosional response, using several complementary, quantitative approaches to characterize topography. The focus is on: (1) general relief properties captured by selected topographic variables; (2) fault-generated escarpments, which define the eastern and northern limits of the study area; (3) drainage patterns and its peculiarities; (4) diversity of longitudinal river profiles and valley morphology. A LiDAR-based high-resolution digital terrain model was the primary source of elevation data. An important component of the study was examination of the role of lithological diversity on relief properties. A statistical approach generally revealed a secondary role of the rock factor and provided a foundation to interpret the macro-topography of the OBMB in terms of tectonic controls. Based on geomorphometric characteristics and information about the distribution of sedimentary rocks, which can be used as marker horizons to identify vertical displacements, four major and one secondary centres of surface uplift have been recognized. They are all asymmetric, being bounded by distinct fault-generated escarpments on one side and sloping gently in the opposite direction. Erosional response to uplift has been variable and includes, apart from simple incision into rising crustal blocks, the origin of epigenetic-antecedent water gaps, drainage diversions, headward erosion, and captures. Abstract: Our understanding about the regional variation of Sediment Yield (SY) in Europe and its scale dependency currently relies on a limited number of data for mainly larger river systems. SY is the integrated result of all erosion and sediment transporting processes operating in a catchment and is therefore of high value for environmental studies and monitoring purposes. Most global assessments of SY consider catchment area (A), climate and topography as the main explanatory variables. However, it is still unclear if these factors also control regional variations of SY within Europe. This paper aims at bridging this gap. Therefore, we i) present a large database of SY-values which was constructed through an extensive literature review; ii) describe the spatial patterns of SY across Europe; and iii) explore its relation with A, climate, and topography. In total, sediment yield data from 1794 different locations throughout Europe were collected (507 reservoirs and 1287 gauging stations), representing a minimum of 29,203 catchment-year data. Only SY-data measured at gauging stations or derived from reservoir siltation rates over a period of a minimum of one year were included in the database. This database comprises a large range of catchment areas (A): i.e from small upland catchments (≥0.01km²) to major European river basins (≤1,360,000km²). An overview of the collected SY-data is provided and sources of uncertainty on the available data are discussed. Despite potentially large uncertainties on several of the individual SY-values, analysis of this database indicates clear spatial patterns of SY in Europe. The temperate and relatively flat regions of Western, Northern and Central Europe generally have relatively low SY-values (with ca. 50% of the SY< 40tkm−2 yr−1 and ca. 80% of the data <200tkm−2 yr−1), while Mediterranean and Mountainous regions generally have higher SY-values (with around 85% of the SY-data >40tkm−2 yr−1 and more than 50% of the data >200tkm−2 yr−1). These differences are attributed to a combination of factors, such as differences in climate, topography, lithology and land use. Although larger differences in SY were found between the climatic regions than between topographic zones, it is currently difficult to identify the individual importance of the various controlling factors of SY. SY–A relationships were calculated for the entire dataset and for subgroups stratified according to the measurement method (gauging stations or reservoir surveys), range of the catchment area, climatic region, topographic zone of the river outlet, and major European river system. Although typically a negative relationship between SY and A is expected due to a decrease in topsoil erosion rates on more gentle slopes and an increase in sediment deposition with an increase in catchment size, this relationship was found to be generally very weak and subject to a lot of scatter. Furthermore, results illustrate important differences in scale dependency: whereas a weak but significant negative trend is generally observed for the temperate and relatively flat regions, no significant or even positive trends were observed in mountain regions and Mediterranean Europe. When only larger river catchments (i.e. >100km² and especially >10,000km²) are considered, catchment area exerted a larger control on SY. These findings confirm previous studies and indicate that the relationship between SY, spatial scale and other controlling factors is often complex and non-linear. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: This paper presents a comprehensive assessment of the suspended sediment load for the period (1998–2008) in the lower river Ebro (NE Iberian Peninsula), one of the most regulated large rivers in Europe. Sediment load estimates are based on continuous discharge and turbidity records, calibrated with direct suspended sediment samples covering a wide range of river''s hydraulic conditions. The temporal variability of the sediment load and the role of the effective discharge at different temporal scales are specifically examined. At the log-term, the study period can be considered as dry. Mean annual load is estimated at around 0.092×106 t, a value that represents less than the 1% of what was transported at the beginning of the twentieth century in the absence of dams and under different land uses. In general, sediment concentrations observed between 1998 and 2008 are low (mean was 9mgl−1 and maximum was 240mgl−1). Specific sediment yield was in the order of 1t km2 y−1, also much lower than values reported in other western European rivers of the same scale and impact. At the annual scale, large floods were responsible for most of the transported suspended sediment (up to 80%). Nevertheless, when the effective discharge is calculated for the whole study period, floods of moderate magnitude and high frequency are responsible for the largest amount of sediment transport. The temporal scale used to calculate the effective discharge thus determines the final results. Load estimates derived from continuous suspended sediment and discharge data and from the flow duration method yielded similar values. This suggests that the latter method is also appropriate when sediment samples cover a large proportion of the observed discharges and statistical significant relations can be obtained and applied to long periods of record. This study provides further insights into the sedimentary status of one of the largest rivers in Europe. Results corroborate previous studies highlighting sediment deficit downstream from large dams. Morphometric properties of drainage basins, expressed as indices related to their shapes, altitude variability, river networks and stream profiles, are frequently used as proxy information concerning the relative intensity of uplift. Research procedures lead towards division of an area into classes of relative tectonic activity (various rates of surface uplift) and are typically based on compound indices that jointly consider various individual parameters. Given that index approaches are quantitative in nature and comprise large sets of data, their statistical treatment should become an inherent component of the workflow, whereby the results of the statistical analyses should guide the conclusions. However, various data handling issues seem to be seldom addressed or are given inadequate attention. They include selection of variables, correlation analysis, principles of classification in terms of relative tectonic activity, validity of classifications, and criteria for using specific statistical procedures. In this paper we demonstrate the need for rigorous statistical data analysis in a morphometric study, focused on an intraplate mountainous terrain in Central Europe (Orlickie-Bystrzyckie Mountains Block), subject to low or moderate uplift. We analysed 56 drainage basins within the footwall blocks of several prominent fault-generated escarpments. Following literature guidance, the hypsometric and shape characteristics of the drainage basins were considered, whereas clustering and pure-rank based approaches were tested to distinguish classes of relative tectonic activity. The results were compared with indicators of tectonic activity calculated for the escarpments themselves and using DEM-derived terrain attributes indicating enhanced erosion. In addition, we used statistical tests to identify possible lithological influence on the variability of morphometric parameters, which in this study was found to be of secondary importance. Statistical considerations neither allowed for unequivocal classification of drainage basins in terms of relative tectonic activity, nor did they reveal a clear spatial distribution pattern of drainage basins with different morphometric characteristics, typically considered to reflect tectonic forcing. Thus, statistics-based analysis is recommended to avoid the risk of over-interpretation. It is also possible that the likely morphometric signature of tectonically less active settings comprises spatially inconsistent information rather than it is typified by consistently low values of various morphometric parameters. • Applicability of morphometric indices in tectonic geomorphology re-assessed. • Critical steps in statistical analysis of morphometric indices are discussed. • Simple test proposed to evaluate the role of lithology versus tectonic forcing. • Inconsistent spatial distribution of index values may typify low-activity areas. Palaeomeanders are characteristic features of meandering river floodplains. Some were abandoned several millennia ago and can be used as evidence for past fluvial patterns. Despite many observations of changes undergone by meandering rivers, little is known about long-term morphological adjustment of meanders. This paper reports on investigations conducted in two reaches located in the middle valley of the Cher River (northwestern Europe, France) to examine the readjustments of lowland meanders during the second half of the Holocene. The aim of our study was to provide new insights into the complex dynamics that control low-energy meandering rivers. LiDAR DEM spatial analyses coupled with geophysical surveys and observations of sediments enabled the identification and dating of thirteen palaeomeanders embedded in coarse sediments (sand and gravel) while the whole floodplain is covered by silty overbank deposits. Sedimentological, geochemical and pollen analyses combined with radiocarbon and OSL dating allowed us to reconstruct the chronology of the cutoff and the filling of palaeochannels. No palaeochannels older than ca 6000 yr cal. BP, and no palaeochannels younger than the eleventh–thirteenth centuries cal. AD were identified. This allowed us to distinguish two periods of meandering processes. (1) Our observations demonstrate the multi-millennia persistence of an active meandering pattern in a context of land use changes (ca 6000 yr cal. BP-eleventh–thirteenth centuries cal. AD). The preserved mobility of the river can be mainly interpreted as the result of the low cohesiveness of the bank material. Too few fine sediments were delivered during the proto-historical and historical periods to help stabilize the river course. (2) Following the eleventh–thirteenth centuries cal. AD, the fluvial system underwent a laterally stable phase. The many medieval and modern hydraulic engineering works reduced the specific stream power and prevented lateral erosion. The drastic decrease in the river's capacity to generate new meanders resulted in the disappearance of floodplain lakes and loss of habitat diversity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
