The quantitative estimation of changes in terrain surfaces caused by water erosion can be carried out from precise descriptions of surfaces given by means of digital elevation models (DEMs). Some stages of water erosion research efforts are conducted in the laboratory using rainfall simulators and soil boxes with areas less than 1 m 2 . Under these conditions, erosive processes can lead to very small surface variations and high precision DEMs are needed to account for differences measured in millimetres. In this paper, we used a photogrammetric Structure from Motion (SfM) technique to build DEMs of a 0.5 m 2 soil box to monitor several simulated rainfall episodes in the laboratory. The technique of DEM of difference (DoD) was then applied using GIS tools to compute estimates of volumetric changes between each pair of rainfall episodes. The aim was to classify the soil surface into three classes: erosion areas, deposition areas, and unchanged or neutral areas, and quantify the volume of soil that was eroded and deposited. We used a thresholding criterion of changes based on the estimated error of the difference of DEMs, which in turn was obtained from the root mean square error of the individual DEMs. Experimental tests showed that the choice of different threshold values in the DoD can lead to volume differences as large as 60% when compared to the direct volumetric difference. It turns out that the choice of that threshold was a key point in this method. In parallel to photogrammetric work, we collected sediments from each rain episode and obtained a series of corresponding measured sediment yields. The comparison between computed and measured sediment yields was significantly correlated, especially when considering the accumulated value of the five simulations. The computed sediment yield was 13% greater than the measured sediment yield. High resolution digital models, combined with GIS or other terrain modelling software, allow many new possibilities in geoscience. In this paper we develop, describe and test a novel method, the GLA method, to detect active tectonic uplift or subsidence along river courses. It is a modification of Hack's SL-index method in order to overcome the disadvantages of the latter. The core assumption of the GLA method is that over geological time river profiles quickly adjust to follow an exponential decrease in elevation along the river course. Any large deviation can be attributed to active tectonic movement, or to disturbances in erosion/sedimentation processes caused by an anthropogenic structure (e.g. artificial dam). During the testing phase, the locations of identified deviations were compared to the locations of faults, identified on a 1:100,000 geological map. Results show that higher magnitude deviations are found within a maximum radius of 200 m from the fault, and the majority of detected deviations within a maximum radius of 600 m from faults or thrusts. However, these results are not the best that could be obtained because the geological map that was used (and the only one available for the area) is not of the appropriate scale, and was therefore not precise enough. Comparison of deviation magnitudes against PSInSAR measurements of vertical displacements in the vicinity revealed that in spite of the very few suitable points available, a good correlation between both independent methods was obtained (R 2 = 0.68 for the E research area and R 2 = 0.69 for the W research area). The GLA method was applied to the three test sites where previous studies have shown active tectonic movements. It shows that deviations occur at the intersections between active faults and river courses, as well as also correctly detected active uplift, attributed to the increased sedimentation rate above an artificial hydropower dam, and an increased erosion rate below. Abstract: The ability to develop spatially distributed models of topographic change is presenting new capabilities in geomorphic research. High resolution maps of elevation change indicate locations, processes, and rates of geomorphic change, and provide a means of calibrating temporal simulation models. Methods of geomorphic change detection (GCD), based on gridded models, may be applied to a wide range of time periods by utilizing cartometric, remote sensing, or ground-based topographic survey data to measure volumetric change. Advantages and limitations of historical DEM reconstruction methods are reviewed with a focus on coupling them with subsequent DEMs to construct DEMs of difference (DoD), which can be created by subtracting one elevation model from another, to map erosion, deposition, and volumetric change. The period of DoD analysis can be extended to several decades if accurate historical DEMs can be generated by extracting topographic data from historical data and selecting areas where geomorphic change has been substantial. The challenge is to recognize and minimize uncertainties in data that are particularly elusive with early topographic data. This paper reviews potential sources of error in digitized topographic maps and DEMs. Although the paper is primarily a review of methods, three brief examples are presented at the end to demonstrate GCD using DoDs constructed from data extending over periods ranging from 70 to 90years. Abstract: This paper uses a multifaceted remote sensing and morphometric approach to investigate if the surface of subcatchments in the Parana Valles area of Mars (20–30°S, 0–20°W) is reflective of hydrology and sediment transport by water. Using digital elevation model (DEM) data obtained from the Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter (MOLA), three nested subcatchments were examined using a suite of terrestrial geomorphic and hydrologic statistics to determine if their shape and form lies within the known range of fluvial catchment properties on Earth. Further, an examination of statistical accuracy via an innovative pixel-by-pixel solution of two statistics established that despite mineralogical homogeneity confirmed by the Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars (CRISM) spectral survey, erosion processes were likely to be variable across the study site. The DEM-based methods outlined here can be employed at other sites to investigate geomorphic properties and attributes of the Martian surface. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Although in the last decades gully erosion has been a thriving research field, few studies have specifically addressed the contribution and location of sidewall erosion processes in gullies. In this paper, sidewall erosion in some large gullies in a Mediterranean area (Anoia-Penede`s, NE Spain) is mapped and assessed for two time intervals (1975–1995 and 1995–2002), using detailed digital elevation models derived from aerial photographs at a scale of 1:5000 to 1:7000. Logistic regression analysis is applied to compute the probability of occurrence of gully sidewall erosion from terrain variables. The results confirm the complex nature of sidewall processes, whose intensity is most probably related to rainfall characteristics. Prolonged wet soil conditions in the period 1995–2002, together with the large and high-intensity rainfall of an extreme event occurred on 10th June 2000, help to explain the different sediment production rates: 16±0.4 Mg ha−1 year−1 in 1975–1995 and 83±6.3 Mg ha−1 year−1 in 1995–2002. The logistic regression analysis revealed that gully-wall slope angle was the main factor controlling gully sidewall failure. In gully walls with high slope angles, tension crack development is the main process promoting wall collapse. The application of the logistic regression model showed a high overall accuracy (87%) but over 50% of commission and omission errors for the class of interest (sidewall erosion), in agreement with the variance explained by the model. Debris flows are natural hazards causing fatalities and damages to infrastructures every year. One of the current challenges is to improve the predictability of such events using simulation tools. In this direction, the paper aims to model debris-flow generation starting from the water component and then simulating the motion of the bulked solid-fluid mixture mass flow. The debris component is progressively increased through entrainment of the channel bed material. The simulation has been performed exploiting the tool r.avaflow, which implements a physically-based model (Pudasaini and Mergili, 2019) for the flow propagation and an empirical multi-phase model for the entrainment processes. The investigated study case occurred in the Northeastern Alps of Italy, near the town of Cortina d'Ampezzo (Veneto Region), during the summer of 2017. The debris flow was triggered by a heavy rainstorm that caused extreme surface runoff, leading to entrainment of sediment from the channel bed. The debris flow obstructed the bridge of a regional road and consequently flooded the adjacent areas. Different types of debris flow simulations are performed, testing four specific functions to compute the entrainment rate. The simulated results are then compared against field observations. The analysis considers the differences in volume and depth of entrainment and in the output hydrograph. We conclude that entrainment is correlated with the terrain slope, particularly if it is calculated on a smoothed digital elevation model, which dilutes a less significant local steepness. We calibrate a spatially distributed slope-dependent erosion coefficient that successfully reproduced the observed entrainment volumes. The outcomes highlight the great importance of simulating debris flow entrainment processes adopting a multiphase model, which resulted particularly suitable for an accurate reproduction of the investigated event. Terraces and lynchets are ubiquitous worldwide and can provide increasingly important Ecosystem Services (ESs), which may be able to mitigate aspects of climate change. They are also a major cause of non-linearity between climate and erosion rates in agricultural systems as noted from alluvial and colluvial studies. New research in the 'critical zone' has shown that we must now treat soil production as an ecologically sensitive variable with implications for soil carbon sequestration. In this review and synthesis paper we present a modified classification of agricultural terraces, review the theoretical background of both terraces and lynchets, and show how new techniques are transforming the study of these widespread and often ancient anthropogenic landforms. The problems of dating terraces and the time-consuming nature of costly surveys have held back the geomorphological and geoarchaeological study of terraces until now. The suite of techniques now available, and reviewed here, includes Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) - Structure from Motion (SfM) photogrammetry, Airborne and Terrestrial Laser Scanning (ALS-TLS); optically stimulated luminescence (OSL and pOSL), portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF), Fourier-transform infra-red analysis (FTIR), phytoliths from plants, and potentially environmental DNA. Three process-related geomorphological questions arise from using this suite of methods; a) can they provide both a chronology of formation and use history, b) can we identify the sources of all the soil components? c) Can terrace soil formation and ecosystem services be modelled at the slope to catchment scale? The answers to these questions can also inform the management of the large areas of abandoned and under-used terraces that are resulting from both the economics of farming and rural population changes. It is now widely accepted that rivers modify their erosion rates in response to variable rock uplift rates, resulting in changes in channel slope that propagate upstream through time. Therefore, present-day river morphology may contain a record of tectonic history. The simple stream power incision model can, in principle, be used to quantify past uplift rates over a variety of spatial and temporal scales. Nonetheless, the erosional model's exponents of area and slope (m and n respectively) and 'bedrock erodibility' (k) remain poorly constrained. In this paper, we will use a geologically and geomorphically well constrained Plio-Pleistocene volcanic landscape in central Sardinia, Italy, to calibrate the stream power erosion equation and to investigate the slip rate of faults that have been seismically quiescent in the historic past. By analysing digital elevation models, geological maps and Landsat imagery, we have identified the geomorphic expression of several volcanic features (eruption centres and basaltic lava flows) and three normal faults with 6 to 8 km fault traces within the outcrop. Downstream, river longitudinal profiles show a similar transient response to relative base level fall, probably as a result of relief inversion at the edge of the volcanic outcrop. From measurements of incision, local slope and upstream catchment area across eight different rivers, we calculate n ≈ 1, m = 0.50 ± 0.02 and, using a landscape age from literature of 2.7 Ma, bedrock erodibility k = 0.10 ± 0.04 m(1−2m) Myr−1. There are also knickpoints on rivers upstream of two normal faults, and we used numerical inverse modelling of the longitudinal profiles to predict the slip rate of these faults since 2.7 Ma. The results from the inverse model show that the erosional parameter values derived in this study can produce theoretical longitudinal profiles that closely resemble observed river profiles upstream of the faults. The lowest misfit theoretical longitudinal profiles were generated by a model of temporally discontinuous footwall uplift with consistently low throw rates (<0.1 mm yr−1). Beach and dune morphology are spatially and temporally variable, changing over a broad range of scales simultaneously. Strong wind, waves, and storm surge from Hurricane Harvey substantially eroded the beach and dunes along the Texas coast, causing significant scarps and berms. This paper presents information about how anthropogenic activity, such as driving on the beach, affected the response and recover of a barrier island with regard to the post-storm resiliency along the Texas-Gulf of Mexico coast by comparing two adjacent 7 km stretches of coast: a driving section and a limited-access section. A collection of field photos, aerial imagery, and a September 2016 LiDAR-derived digital elevation model (DEM) dataset provide information on pre-storm morphology, while field photos, taken only 3 days after Hurricane Harvey made landfall, and a structure-from-motion (SfM)-derived DEM and imagery provide qualitative and quantitative information about the post-storm morphology. While beach and dune erosion in the non-driving section was restricted entirely to the beach and incipient dune system, the driving section exhibited complex patterns of erosion and deposition along the beach and the entire foredune profile was altered. Despite the hurricane making landfall north of the study site and closer to the non-driving section, beach-dune erosion and scarping was greatest in the southern section which is accessible to public vehicles. Results demonstrate that human activity affects the response and recovery of the beach-dune system along the Gulf side of the island by decreasing alongshore variability in erosion-deposition and limiting vegetative and geomorphic recovery.
