Abstract: This paper presents a rational method for estimating the maximum discharge of a landslide-induced debris flow. The method has five basic principles or steps: (a) to identify and measure representative bends and straight zones along a channel through which a debris flow went down; (b) to evaluate peak debris flow velocity in the bends; (c) to assess peak debris flow velocity in the straight channel zones; (d) to use the peak velocities to estimate the distribution of peak discharge along the entire channel; and (e) to find the maximum velocity and discharge of the debris flow. The method is illustrated with a case study of a landslide-induced debris flow at a mountainous region near Chengdu, southwestern China. The results show that the peak debris velocity was between 2.4 and 4.7 m s−1 and the peak debris discharge was between 6.7 and 35.7 m3 s−1. The peak discharge initially increased at the upper portion of the channel, then decreased at the lower portion, indicating that the upper channel experienced erosion but the lower channel experienced deposition. The location with the maximum debris flow discharge corresponds to the point where the volume of the debris flow started to decrease. Erosion and deposition processes lie at the centre of geomorphological explanation, but progress in understanding has been limited by a lack of appropriate high-resolution monitoring methodologies which permit detection of erosion and deposition dynamics. This paper presents a case for monitoring erosion and deposition at high temporal resolutions, and uses hypothetical approaches supported by example erosion and deposition events and analyses drawn from estuarine and fluvial systems. The paper first presents testable hypotheses to demonstrate the complexity of possible event combinations, sequences and juxtapositions for the erosion driving forces which underpin the need for high-resolution monitoring. Second, it summarises recent improvements to the Photo-Electronic Erosion Pin (PEEP) automatic erosion and deposition monitoring system, including the novel concept of Thermal Consonance Timing (TCT), which is particularly promising because it helps to define the timing of nocturnal events and through the entire hydrograph. Third, example results are discussed from high-resolution monitoring of bank erosion at a tidal site at Burringham on the River Trent in northern England. Tidal banks are revealed to be much more dynamic than previous conventional monitoring has indicated. A key result is that, because the high-resolution approach allows erosional and depositional activity to be assigned to specific periods of tidal inundation, it becomes possible for the first time routinely to produce ‘event-based’ erosion (36 mm h-1) and deposition rates (4.5 and 8.4 mm h-1). Such rate determinations are potentially very useful in the field validation of sedimentological and geomorphological models, including grain settling and resuspension theory. Fourth, through a longer term of aggregated daily data, a striking 2-week cycle of deposition and erosion emerges which correlates most strongly with spring-neap tidal cycling, but is moderated by wind stress effects. Sediment was deposited on the bank relatively quickly, over 4–5 days, but then removed by erosion rather slowly, over 9–10 days. Fifth, the dangers of low-resolution monitoring are illustrated by comparing the daily PEEP data set with a series resampled at a lower (14-day) frequency, to simulate the information generated by conventional resurvey methodologies. The low-frequency series failed adequately to represent the cyclicity, mean, range, variability and trend of bank elevation changes, and without this dynamics information, rate and process definition is very difficult, largely because of self-concealing activity. Sixth, a useful advance is illustrated by the fluvial erosion sequence for the River Wharfe (N. England). This shows how TCT can generate rare and important results with the definition of the precise time of an erosion event within the hydrograph: bank retreat here occurred very quickly, after initial inundation, and within 4 h of the flow peak-information which can be used to define thresholds for entrainment (e.g. critical shear stresses). Such high-resolution monitoring helps to unravel some of the erosional effects of complex sequences, combinations and juxtapositions of similar or different forcing events. Finally, high-resolution approaches have been adopted worldwide for fluvial, estuarine, mudflat and canal systems, but considerable potential exists for their development and use in these and other contexts (e.g. gully, hillslope, beach and dune environments), to improve understanding and modelling of geomorphological processes more widely. Tectonically controlled landforms develop morphologic features that provide useful markers to investigate crustal deformation and relief growth dynamics. In this paper, we present results of morphotectonic experiments obtained with an innovative approach combining tectonic and surface processes (erosion, transport, and sedimentation), coupled with accurate model monitoring techniques. This approach allows for a qualitative and quantitative analysis of landscape evolution in response to active deformation in the three end-member geological settings: compression, extension, and strike–slip. Experimental results outline first that experimental morphologies evolve significantly at a short time scale. Numerous morphologic markers form continuously, but their lifetime is generally short because erosion and sedimentation processes tend to destroy or bury them. For the compressional setting, the formation of terraces above an active thrust appears mainly controlled by narrowing and incision of the main channel through the uplifting hanging-wall and by avulsion of deposits on fan-like bodies. Terrace formation is irregular even under steady tectonic rates and erosional conditions. Terrace deformation analysis allows retrieving the growth history of the structure and the fault slip rate evolution. For the extensional setting, the dynamics of hanging-wall sedimentary filling appears to control the position of the base level, which in turn controls footwall erosion. Two phases of relief evolution can be evidenced: the first is a phase of relief growth, and the second is a phase of upstream propagation of topographic equilibrium that is reached first in the sedimentary basin. During the phase of relief growth, the formation of triangular facets occurs by degradation of the fault scarp, and their geometry (height) becomes stationary during the phase of upstream propagation of the topographic equilibrium. For the strike–slip setting, the complex morphology of the wrench zone, composed of several interacting fault segments, enhances the interactions with the drainage network. Because of the widening of the main fault zone toward the surface, a significant amount of distributed deformation is observed along the wrench zone. Locally, where two terminations of fault segments interact, less than a quarter of the far field displacement can remain measurable using fault offsets, leading to a systematic underestimation of the real fault slip rate. These different experimental examples illustrate the great potential of the approach coupling deformation mechanisms and erosion–transport–sedimentation processes to investigate qualitatively and quantitatively the morphotectonic evolution of tectonically controlled landscapes. Based on a range of evidence, Cook (2019) concluded that increased erosion and sedimentation followed the movement of Europeans into new regions of Australia soon after A.D. 1788. Woodward (this issue) takes issue with this position, based largely on the interpretation of lake sediment records from a single study site on the New England Tablelands of eastern Australia. Many of Woodward's comments (and their singular focus) are beyond the aims and scope of Cook (2019), which examined the evidence for human impacts on soils and erosion in early colonial Australia. This paper addresses the following issues raised by Woodward: (1) that there is no evidence of environmental impacts from the first half century of 'illegal' settlers and land use in Australia, and (2)that other historical and scientific records of increased erosion and sedimentation before 1840 cannot be relied on. Further, this paper corrects other errors and inaccuracies found in Woodward's reply. This paper draws on many datasets to expand the argument that European land use, resource extraction, and agriculture resulted in landscape disturbance before 1840 in Australia. Finally, this reply demonstrates why Woodward's claim of no major impacts from illegal Europeans before 1840 in Australia is, for many locations, improbable based on the evidence available, and for large swathes of eastern Australia, difficult to support. A recent paper published in Geomorphology by Gabet et al. (2014) presents the results of a numerical model supporting the hypothesis that burrowing mammals build Mima mounds - small, densely packed hillocks found primarily in the western United States. The model is based on field observations and produces realistic-looking mounds with spatial distributions similar to real moundfields. Alternative explanations have been proposed for these Mima mounds, including formation by seismic shaking and vegetation-controlled erosion and deposition. Abstract: This paper investigates wood recruitment and deposition dynamics in a large gravel-bed, braided river (Tagliamento River, Italy). We used a combination of field measurements, automatically repeated ground images, and remotely sensed surveys to quantify wood input through bank erosion and associated downstream deposition. Two sites were investigated where floods caused the erosion of vegetated island edges. A lidar survey preceding the erosion events provided data on the morphology and vegetation structure of the eroded areas, allowing estimation of the number of trees that were uprooted. Sequences of ground-based images acquired automatically (and supported by field measurements) showed the time, number, and location of deposited trees. Results show that the complex morphology of braided rivers induces specific deposition patterns. We observed wide dispersal of wood on gravel bars, with jams characterised by a small number of logs (on average 2–3) and, in many cases, only a single log. A large proportion of the eroded trees (up to 40%) were deposited on the nearest downstream bar. This illustrates significant wood retention close to the recruitment site, with the remaining wood dispersed widely downstream. Differences in the observed level of local wood retention were associated with the proximity of the erosion site to the main channel and differences were also observed in retention between the peak and the falling limb of flood events, confirming that water depth and probably flow velocity are the crucial parameters controlling wood deposition. Abstract: The aim of this paper is to investigate the morphological implications of the interplay between tectonic movements at different rates, timescales, and spatial extent in a catchment of intermediate size, the Huang Shui River (a main tributary of the Yellow River in the NE Tibet Plateau). River incision started from a peneplain-like surface that developed in post-Miocene–Pliocene times. At the end of the Tertiary, a general tectonic uplift of the Tibetan Plateau initiated river incision. This general uplift also caused local fragmentation of the Huang Shui catchment into blocks (kilometers or maximally, a few tens of kilometers) of local extent that have subsided and/or uplifted relative to one another. Fluvial deposition of >30m in the subsiding blocks contrasts with erosion and formation of gorges in the uplifted blocks. Incision into the former peneplain was not continuous but a staircase of terraces developed under climatic influences. Terrace deposits are sometimes capped by interglacial soils or soil-derived material. Apparently, terrace incision occurred at the transition to the next cold period. The different rates of uplift and subsidence of the individual blocks resulted in the simultaneous development of erosion and accumulation terraces of different sizes within the same catchment, even within the same tectonic block. This makes it impossible to connect the terraces of the different blocks, except for the three youngest terraces (representing the last 300,000years), thus illustrating the uniform tectonic history of the catchment since that time. Abstract: Progressive glacier thinning, retreat and mass loss in the High-Arctic is increasingly exposing forefield sediments to processes of mobilisation and redistribution. In this paper, we quantify forefield sediment redistribution at Midtre Lovénbreen, Svalbard, using repeat light detection and ranging (lidar) surveys conducted in 2003 and 2005 in combination with field-based observations. Average surface lowering of the forefield over the observation period identified from lidar surveys is −0.05ma−1; and two primary areas of sediment reworking are identified: active fluvial incision of proglacial streams by ~2m and lateral moraine downwasting of similar magnitude. Multivariate analysis of fluvial and climatological field data indicates that observed forefield sediment mobilisation is driven primarily by discharge forcing, but with contributions from thermoerosive processes and stochastic, autogenic sediment supply. During the period of observation, disparity between sediment loss in forefield fluvial systems as calculated from lidar data (3000–4000×103 kg) and monitoring of fluvial sediment load (1600–3500×103 kg) suggests the likely presence of significant quantities of buried ice beneath a thick debris mantle, as evidenced by field observations. Relatively uniform lowering of the moraine crest identified from our repeat lidar surveys indicates thermoerosion of an ice core. However, simple debris layer thickness modelling indicates an increase in variation of debris layer thickness at lower elevations, providing support for the assertion that moraine disintegration is driven by complex combinations of both thermal and mechanical processes. This study demonstrates the viability of using lidar in conjunction with field monitoring to better understand sedimentary deglaciation dynamics and processes, and also highlights the significance of forefield areas in controlling the sediment yield from deglaciating catchments. Abstract: To exploit natural sedimentary archives and geomorphic landforms it is necessary to date them first. Landscape evolution of Alpine areas is often strongly related to the activities of glaciers in the Pleistocene and Holocene. At sites where no organic matter for radiocarbon dating exists and where suitable boulders for surface exposure dating (using in situ produced cosmogenic nuclides) are absent, dating of soils could give information about the timing of landscape evolution. This paper explores the applicability of soil dating using the inventory of meteoric 10Be in Alpine soils. For this purpose, a set of 6 soil profiles in the Swiss and Italian Alps was investigated. The surface at these sites had already been dated (using the radiocarbon technique or the surface exposure determination using in situ produced 10Be). Consequently, a direct comparison of the ages of the soils using meteoric 10Be and other dating techniques was made possible. The estimation of 10Be deposition rates is subject to severe limitations and strongly influences the obtained results. We tested three scenarios using a) the meteoric 10Be deposition rates as a function of the annual precipitation rate, b) a constant 10Be input for the Central Alps, and c) as b) but assuming a pre-exposure of the parent material. The obtained ages that are based on the 10Be inventory in soils and on scenario a) for the 10Be input agreed reasonably well with the age using surface exposure or radiocarbon dating. The ages obtained from soils using scenario b) produced ages that were mostly too old whereas the approach using scenario c) seemed to yield better results than scenario b). Erosion calculations can, in theory, be performed using the 10Be inventory and 10Be deposition rates. An erosion estimation was possible using scenario a) and c), but not using b). The calculated erosion rates using these scenarios seemed to be plausible with values in the range of 0–57mm/ky. The dating of soils using 10Be has several potential error sources. Analytical errors as well as errors from other parameters such as bulk soil density and soil skeleton content have to be taken into account. The error range was from 8 up to 21%. Furthermore, uncertainties in estimating 10Be deposition rates substantially influence the calculated ages. Relative age estimates and, under optimal conditions, absolute dating can be carried out. Age determination of Alpine soils using 10Be gives another possibility to date surfaces when other methods fail or are not possible at all. Abstract: Coastal boulder accumulations are often mentioned in the literature, even though their interpretation remains difficult, especially along rock coasts affected both by storms and tsunamis. Studies on the geomorphic impact of such high-energy events are actually of great interest, since their intensity and frequency are key issues for the future evolution of coasts in the framework of the global change. The southwest coast of Iceland faces the powerful storms of the North Atlantic Ocean, with wave heights of more than 15 m. The probability for past and present tsunamis to hit this coast is very low. In this paper, we describe boulder accumulations along the volcanic rock coast of Reykjanes (southwest Iceland). They consist of cliff-top boulders, clusters and ridges, beaches, and boulder fields. Large boulders, up to 70 t in weight, have been transported and deposited up to 65 m inland (6 masl). The maximum limit of boulder deposition and driftwood was found respectively 210 m and 550 m inland. Storms appear to be a predominant factor in the geomorphic evolution of Reykjanes coasts. Our observations also give new insight for the interpretation of coastal boulder accumulations. Processes of erosion and deposition by tsunamis are a rising topic in the literature, and the effects of recurrent and powerful storms are neglected. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The surfaces of salt diapirs in the Zagros Mountains are mostly covered by surficial deposits, which significantly affect erosion rates, salt karst evolution, land use and the density of the vegetation cover. Eleven salt diapirs were selected for the study of surficial deposits in order to cover variability in the geology, morphology and climate in a majority of the diapirs in the Zagros Mountains and Persian Gulf Platform. The chemical and mineralogical compositions of 80 selected samples were studied mainly by X-ray powder diffraction and X-ray fluorescence. Changes in salinity along selected vertical profiles were studied together with the halite and gypsum distribution. The subaerial residuum formed from minerals and rock detritus released from the dissolved rock salt is by far the most abundant material on the diapirs. Fluvial sediments derived from this type of residuum are the second most common deposits found, while submarine residuum and marine sediments have only local importance. The mineralogical/chemical composition of surficial deposits varies amongst the three end members: evaporite minerals (gypsum/anhydrite and minor halite), carbonates (dolomite and calcite) and silicates-oxides (mainly quartz, phyllosilicates, and hematite). Based on infiltration tests on different types of surficial deposits, most of the rainwater will infiltrate, while overland flow predominates on rock salt exposures. Recharge concentration and thick accumulations of fine sediment support relatively rich vegetation cover in some places and even enable local agricultural activity. The source material, diapir relief, climatic conditions and vegetation cover were found to be the main factors affecting the development and erosion of surficial deposits. A difference was found in residuum type and landscape morphology between the relatively humid NW part of the studied area and the arid Persian Gulf coast: In the NW, the medium and thick residuum seems to be stable under current climatic conditions. Large sinkholes and blind valleys with sinking streams are common. On other diapirs, the original thick residuum is undergoing erosion and the new morphology is currently represented by salt exposures and badland-like landscapes or by fields of small sinkholes developed in the thin residuum. Models for evolution of the subaerial residuum and the diapir landscape/morphology are described in this paper. While the thick residuum with vegetation has very low erosion rates, the salt exposures and thin residuum are eroded rapidly. During wet periods (e.g. early Holocene), the diapirs rose and salt glaciers expanded as the influx of salt mass was much faster compared to erosion. After the onset of an arid climate, c. 6 ka BP, the rising of the some diapir surfaces decreased or even reversed due to acceleration of erosion thanks to vegetation degradation and changes in the residuum type and thickness. Abstract: An active meandering river in NW England has been monitored annually for more than 20 years. Data on the occurrence of erosion, deposition, calibre of sediment and morphological changes have been recorded for a sequence of >50 bends in a 10 km length reach. The data on process activity have been analysed for patterns and variation over the period 1981–2002. Occurrence of floods is hypothesised to be the major control on activity and this paper aims to test that relationship and to identify whether any major phases of activity emerge at this timescale. Data on magnitude of annual peak discharges and on the frequency of peaks over a threshold show a phase of relatively low peaks in the early 1980s, a phase of variable discharge and some low flows from 1987–1997, and a phase of high peaks 1998–2002. Frequency of high flows has increased through the period. Analysis of the relationship of processes to discharge characteristics indicates that erosion takes place on a high proportion of bends every year and that coarse material (cobbles) is deposited on bars in most years. Process thresholds for bank erosion and coarse sediment transport and deposition are below bankfull and occur on average several times a year. A trend of severity of erosion activity to winter peak discharge during the 1980''s did not continue into the period of high flows of the late 1990''s but deposition was similar in both periods. It is hypothesised that vegetation may be influencing response. Vegetation growth on the bars increased from the late 1980''s and is likely to have decreased erosion but enhanced deposition. Number of frost days has decreased over the period but other factors could also be influencing vegetation. The occurrence of the process activity is compared to overall changes in morphology on the river measured from photogrammetric mapping of the course in 1984, 1996 and 2001. These show differences in average channel width but the interannual variability of processes raises questions of the numbers and sequences of flood events needed for different phases and hydromorphological responses of the channel to be identifiable. Abstract: This paper addresses questions of the spatial pattern of instability and the mechanisms of change in an active meandering river, particularly whether and how change is propagated. More than 20 years of monitoring of a sequence of nearly 100 bends on one dynamic meandering river, combined with historical data and previous analyses of processes of change, provide a unique insight into the link between annual changes produced by erosion and deposition and the longer-term changes in planform. The study reach of the River Dane in NW England exhibits stable and unstable sections adjacent to one another. Rates of movement range up to 3 m a−1, with maxima occurring in high curvature, free bends. Stable reaches are due to factors of gradient, curvature and bank resistance. Analysis of the large amount of data on occurrence of erosion and deposition in each bend each year reveals no definite association of changes in one bend with another. The detailed evidence of the morphological features in the bends shows that changes do not take place by bars moving progressively through reaches. Case studies of bends upstream of constrained, stable reaches indicate an oscillation of widening and narrowing of the channel, over a period of a few years, producing a net rotation of the bend. These areas are zones of stalling of sediment and change takes place by absorption and lateral movement. Overall, changes tend to be localised and fit the bend theory of meanders, but with low sensitivity reaches pinning the planform for longer periods in certain locations. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The estuary-dominated coast of the Greater Thames in England has experienced rapid lateral erosion and internal dissection of saltmarshes. This paper provides an overview of saltmarsh development in this area, and re-examines the role of environmental and human forcing factors. It draws on documentary evidence, including historical maps, survey data and time-series data of forcing factors. Lateral marsh retreat began in the 19th century in the Medway and Blackwater Estuaries, followed by other estuaries in the Greater Thames region at the beginning of the 20th century. The outer estuaries and the wider parts of the inner estuaries especially have experienced erosion. Erosion has been modest in wave-sheltered areas, e.g., the Colne and the inner Crouch. In the 1960s and, more widely, the 1970s, a phase of rapid erosion took place, with erosion rates of up to ca. 16 ha year-1 per site, notably along the open coast of Dengie and Foulness, and in the Blackwater and Thames Estuaries. At all sites, vertical sediment accretion was well able to keep up with sea level rise over the past century. Evidence indicates that there may have been several causes for the erosion of saltmarshes. These are notably land claim and embankment construction (increasing the tidal range and current velocities) and a continuous rise of, especially, high and extreme water levels. The latest episode of rapid erosion in the 1970s is largely attributed to changes in the wind/wave climate. For example, erosion at wave-exposed sites coincided with a peak in high magnitude waves combined with a high incidence of southeasterly waves. The study shows that many factors, including natural forcing factors and human activities, have to be taken into account when explaining saltmarsh development. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
