Direct measurements of erosional response to past climate change are scarce, but mid‐latitude landscapes can record how shifts between cold and warm periods altered erosion outside glacial margins. To study hillslope responses to periglaciation, we measured bulk geochemistry and cosmogenic 10Be and 26Al concentrations in colluvium and weathered bedrock in an 18 m regolith core from Bear Meadows, Pennsylvania, ∼100 km south of maximum glacial extent. Using core lithology, cosmogenic nuclide concentrations, and regional 10Be‐derived erosion rates, we show the onset of 100‐Kyr glacial cycles at the Mid‐Pleistocene Transition (1.2–0.7 Ma) instigated multiple periglacial episodes in central Appalachia, increasing erosion rates compared to the relatively warmer Neogene. Our results show the higher efficiency of periglacial versus temperate erosion processes and highlight a pervasive Pleistocene periglacial erosion signal preserved in the 10Be inventory of surface sediments in central Appalachia, where erosion rates are slow enough to integrate previous cold‐climate processes. Plain Language Summary: During ice ages in the past 2.6 million years, mid‐latitude landscapes like central Pennsylvania were shaped by extreme cold and thawing permafrost, conditions that promote fast breakdown and transport of soil. However, the effect of these cold climates and subsequent warming on erosion rates is unclear since we often lack records of hillslope erosion of warm and cold periods. We drilled 18 m through hillslope material emplaced during permafrost thaw and into the underlying weathered bedrock, and measured the concentrations of 10Be and 26Al, two isotopes that serve as tracers of burial timing and erosion rate. The ratio of 26Al/10Be in the oldest permafrost thaw unit indicates the material was deposited about one million years ago, corresponding to a switch to colder glacial periods followed by more abrupt and extreme warming. The concentrations of 10Be in bedrock below the deposits also imply slower erosion rates prior to the onset of glacial‐interglacial cycles. Our results indicate that cold climate processes are more efficient at eroding rock and transporting sediment than temperate processes and help explain patterns in erosion rates across the mid‐Atlantic region measured over different time scales. In unglaciated terrain, the imprint of past glacial periods is difficult to discern. The topographic signature of periglacial processes, such as solifluction lobes, may be erased or hidden by time and vegetation, and thus their import diminished. Belowground, periglacial weathering, particularly frost cracking, may have imparted a profound influence on weathering and erosion rates during past climate regimes. By combining a mechanical frost‐weathering model with the full suite of Last Glacial Maximum climate simulations, we elucidate the meters‐deep magnitude and continent‐spanning expanse of frost weathering across unglaciated North America at ∼21 ka. The surprising extent of modeled frost weathering suggests, by proxy, the broad legacy of diverse periglacial processes. Complementing previous studies that championed the role of precipitation‐driven changes in Critical Zone evolution, our results imply an additional strong temperature control on surficial process efficacy across much of modern North America, both during glacial periods and modern climes. Plain Language Summary: Hillslopes and rivers are shaped by both modern and past climates. Climate and ecosystems drive how fast bedrock weathers, soil is produced, sediment moves downslope and rivers respond. We know that during glacial periods, unglaciated regions beyond the reach of ice sheets were much colder than today. By applying a frost‐weathering model (which predicts changes in porosity, and thus rock damage, due to growth of ice lenses) to Last Glacial Maximum paleoclimatic simulations, we demonstrate the surprising extent and magnitude of periglacial processes 21,000 years ago across much of North America. No matter which paleoclimate simulation one chooses, the results point to just how extensive frost weathering processes were during the last glacial period, and by extension, multiple glacial periods of earth's history. Based on the widespread occurrence of glacial‐period frost weathering over meter‐scale depths, we suggest that past cold climates have had a significant impact on modern landscapes, both through lingering impact on subsurface pathways for water and thus chemical weathering, and the rock damage that contributes to the rate at which rock disaggregates into sediment and potential instability due to nonsteady rates of hillslope and river processes. In the ice‐rich permafrost of the Arctic regions, thermokarst erosion on slopes induces the formation of large‐scale retrogressive thaw slumps (RTS). They have significant geomorphological, hydrological, and biogeochemical impacts on the landscape. Further research is thus needed to better understand the respective effect of ice content and permafrost heterogeneities on the dynamics of these erosional features. Here, we present results of a full‐scale physical modeling of RTS development in a cold room. The experimental setup was designed to simulate and compare two ground‐ice settings (ice wedges, icy layers) with the thawing of ice‐poor permafrost (i.e., reference model). Our results show that the melting of the icy layers induces a loss of decohesion of the overlapping frozen soil. The heterogeneous frozen soil with ice wedges needs a longer time until degradation, but undergoes a stronger and faster decohesion of its structure during the thawing phase.
