Background and Objectives This paper aims to extend research on the association between mother–child contact and adult children's psychological well-being in later-life families by differentiating between in-person, virtual, and written digital contact, examining the moderating role of children's gender, and exploring the processes that underlie these associations. Research Design and Methods Mixed-methods data were collected from 250 adult children nested within 131 families as part of the third wave of the Within-Family Differences Study. On average, adult children were 59 and mothers were 88 years of age. Results Multilevel analyses revealed that interacting with mothers through written digital media was associated with higher depressive symptoms among adult children, whereas mother–child in-person and virtual digital contact were not associated with children's depressive symptoms. When stratifying the sample by children's gender, we found that mother–child written digital contact was associated with higher depressive symptoms among daughters, but not sons. Qualitative analyses suggested that adult daughters' psychological well-being was negatively associated with written digital contact with their mothers because this medium of interaction typically fell short of daughters' expectations for emotionally enriching exchanges. Discussion and Implications This study revealed differences in how virtual and written digital contact are associated with psychological well-being among adult daughters, but not sons, suggesting that it is important to consider type of contact, gender of interactants, and content of exchanges when studying the associations between digital communication and relational and psychological well-being and designing intervention programs and digital communication technologies. Background and Objectives The number of people with memory problems who desire or are forced to age in place has been growing rapidly. Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has brought significant challenges to the ability of those with memory problems to stay active and age in place. This study investigated the roles of neighborhood environments in helping community-dwelling people with memory problems maintain physical activity during the COVID-19 pandemic. Research Design and Methods We used retrospective online survey data from 75 caregivers who responded on behalf of their care recipients with memory problems living in Texas communities. We used difference-in-difference (DID) estimations based on zero-inflated negative binomial regression models to examine the changes in recreational walking and moderate-to-strenuous exercise before and during the COVID-19 pandemic and whether such changes vary by diversity of walkable neighborhood destinations. Results In the total sample, there was a significant reduction in both recreational walking (Δ change = −45.16 min/week, p  < .001) and exercise (Δ change = −36.28 min/week, p  = .03) after the COVID-19 outbreak. The pandemic's impact on exercise varied by diversity of neighborhood destinations (DID = 0.81, p  = .03). Those living in neighborhoods with diverse walkable destinations experienced less decline in physical activity compared to those living in areas with limited destinations. Discussion and Implications These findings suggest that the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on physical activity among people with memory problems may be partially explained by neighborhood land-use characteristics. Destination-rich, mixed-use neighborhood environments can help people with memory problems stay active even during pandemics such as COVID-19 in the United States and potentially elsewhere. Background and Objectives While recognizing the acknowledged difference in dementia prevalence between Indigenous and non-Indigenous populations, most previous studies were conducted in the Global North. This study aims to examine the relationship between Indigenous ethnic identity and dementia status with a special focus on urban–rural differences among older adults in Ecuador. Research Design and Methods Data came from Ecuador's Survey of Health, Welfare, and Aging, derived from a probability sample of households in Ecuador. The final sample comprised 4,984 adults aged 60 or older. Dementia status was assessed through 3 indicators: low scores on a cognitive assessment, the number of difficulties in instrumental activities of daily living, and self-reported dementia diagnosis. Logistic regression and multivariate decomposition analyses were utilized. Results Indigenous participants, even after adjusting for sociodemographic and health-related factors, exhibited a higher likelihood of having dementia compared to their non-Indigenous counterparts. Among Indigenous participants, those residing in rural areas had a higher likelihood of having dementia status, while there was no significant urban–rural difference observed among non-Indigenous participants. Rural residency and covariates explain 91.0% of the observed difference in dementia prevalence between Indigenous and non-Indigenous older adults. Discussion and Implications Indigenous older adults who are living in rural areas are at particularly high risk of having dementia largely because they have presently recognized modifiable risk factors. These findings underscore the urgent need to prioritize provisions of appropriate and equitable service related to dementia for Indigenous people living in rural areas outside high-income countries. Background and Objectives Physical capability, social support, loneliness, depression, and anxiety predict life satisfaction in older adults. Currently, no systematic review and meta-analysis have been conducted to investigate the strength of these associations globally. Therefore, this study quantified the strength of these associations. Research Design and Methods A systematic literature search was conducted using MEDLINE, EMBASE, APA PsycINFO, Web of Science, and Scopus. We included observational studies assessing the association between physical capability, social support, loneliness, depression, and anxiety with life satisfaction in adults aged 65+. Results In total, 10,552 articles were identified, of which 78 studies in 164,478 participants were included in the systematic review and 57 were included in the meta-analysis. Greater life satisfaction was significantly associated with greater physical capabilities (odds ratio [OR] = 2.64; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.01–3.45; p  < .001, k  = 35, n  = 33,732), higher social support (OR = 3.27; 95% CI: 2.59–4.13, k  = 20 studies, n  = 13,228), reduced loneliness (OR = 3.30; 95% CI: 2.53–4.30, k  = 11, n  = 33,638), depression (OR = 4.76; 95% CI: 3.10–7.32, k  = 24, n  = 64,097), and anxiety (OR = 5.10; 95% CI: 2.21–11.78, k  = 5, n  = 43,368). The strength of associations did not vary between Western and Eastern countries, year of publication, or quality. Gender was a moderator: Loneliness was more strongly associated with life satisfaction in females. Age was also a moderator; the association between social support and life satisfaction weakened with increasing age. Discussion and Implications Improving the physical capabilities of older individuals, fostering social support, and alleviating feelings of loneliness, depression, and anxiety may help build life satisfaction in older individuals, which policy-makers and healthcare professionals should prioritize when implementing strategies. Background and Objectives Although extreme heat events disproportionately affect older adults and the importance of cognition is known, research examining older adult cognition under heat stress is limited. This study examines the relationship between risk/protective factors and heat strain on older adult cognition, employing a social-ecological model. Research Design and Methods Retrieved from the 1996–2016 waves of the Health and Retirement Study, our study used older adults aged 50 and older and their spouses residing in the United States. Individual-fixed effects models estimated changes in cognition as measured by fluid and crystallized intelligence scores in response to extreme heat days. This study further estimated interactions of extreme heat with protective/risk factors for cognition (i.e. education, physical activity, social engagement, and genetic risk for Alzheimer's disease). Results Our results demonstrated that extreme heat days were associated with fluid but not crystallized intelligence scores. Educational attainment, mild physical activity, and social contacts with children moderated this relationship. Furthermore, Alzheimer's disease polygenic scores moderated the correlation between extreme heat days and crystallized intelligence scores. Discussion and Implications An increasing frequency of extreme heat events and an aging population globally highlight the need for policies and interventions building resiliency in older adults. Background and Objectives Acculturation is a critical aspect of social experience for immigrants, including Asian immigrants. Existing literature has shown mixed findings on the health impacts of acculturation and largely relied on cross-sectional studies, preventing drawing definitive conclusions. This study aimed to examine the long-term effects of acculturation on depressive symptoms and activities of daily living (ADL) limitations in a large sample of older Chinese immigrants in the United States. Research Design and Methods Data were drawn from 2,811 older Chinese immigrants from the Population Study of Chinese Elderly in Chicago. Acculturation was assessed at baseline, and questionnaires on depressive symptoms and ADL limitations were completed at 4 assessments. Results Overall, results showed that acculturation was not associated with depressive symptoms at baseline but was associated with a faster decline in depressive symptoms over time. No associations were found between acculturation and ADL limitations. Stratified analyses showed that the significant relationship between acculturation and a faster decline in depressive symptoms was only evident among female participants. Also, acculturation was associated with a lower risk of reporting ADL limitations at baseline in female participants but a higher risk of reporting ADL limitations in male participants. Discussion and Implications This study indicates the long-term benefits of acculturation on mental health among older Chinese immigrants in the United States, particularly among females. Initiatives supporting the acculturation process need to consider sex disparities and individual preferences, aiming to foster sustained benefits for healthy aging in this population. Background and Objectives Comprehensive definitions of social issues and populations can set the stage for the development of responsive policies and practices. Yet despite the rise of late-life homelessness, the phenomenon remains narrowly understood and ill-defined. Research Design and Methods This article and the definition that ensued are based on the reconceptualization of interview data derived from a critical ethnography conducted in Montreal, Canada, with older homeless persons (N = 40) and service providers (N = 20). Results Our analysis suggests that definitions of late-life homelessness must include 4 intersecting components: (1) age, eligibility, and access to services; (2) disadvantage over the life course and across time; (3) social and spatial processes of exclusion that necessitate aging in "undesirable" places; and (4) unmet needs that result from policy inaction and nonresponse. Discussion and Implications The new definition derived from these structural and relational components captures how the service gaps and complex needs identified in earlier works are shaped by delivery systems and practices whose effect is compounded over time. Background and Objectives Social frailty is an emerging concept characterized by state of vulnerability due to the lack or absence of social resources that enable health and well-being, particularly among older people. However, there is no consensus on how to accurately measure and assess social frailty, given the broad coverage of social dimensions affecting older individuals. This scoping review aimed to identify the existing tools and scales used to measure social frailty in older people. Research Design and Methods A scoping review methodology was employed. Articles published between January 2014 and April 2024 were searched in 6 electronic databases: PubMed, PsycINFO, ProQuest, Scopus, SocIndex, and CINAHL. The scoping review followed a 5-stage process by Arksey and O'Malley and adhered to the guidelines provided by Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis extension for Scoping Reviews. Results Nine social frailty tools were identified across the 58 papers included in this review. The individual question item commonly used in the scales were classified into main categories based on their conceptual characteristics and intentions. The most common individual questionnaire constructs used to measure social frailty included financial status, social resources, social behaviors and activities, and sense of purpose. The reviewed tools varied in terms of their robustness and the process of scale development. Discussion and Implications Our review suggested the development of a standardized, psychometrically tested, and accurate screening tool to screen social frailty status. Background and Objectives Hearing loss frequently goes undiagnosed and untreated, with serious sequelae. Hearing screening facilitates diagnosis and treatment but is not routinely conducted in primary care. This study addresses the attitudes and insights of patients and primary care clinic personnel relative to the routinization of hearing screening in primary care for older adults. Research Design and Methods Data presented are from the qualitative portion of a larger study. The main study compared screening completion for 3 approaches to coordinating telephone-based hearing screening with primary care—1 offering hearing screening within the primary care encounter and 2 providing information for at-home screening (1 with and 1 without provider encouragement). Focus groups/interviews were conducted with personnel (n  = 38) at the 6 participating clinics, patients who completed screening and were referred for diagnosis (n  = 14), and patients who did not complete screening (n  = 10). Analysis used the general inductive approach. Results Most patients had unaddressed hearing concerns prior to the study. Negative attitudes toward hearing loss/treatment were common, and experiences of family and friends influenced attitudes, but lack of urgency was the primary barrier to screening completion. Respondents favored routine primary care-based hearing screening for older adults, but clinic personnel noted challenges of time, space, workflow, and reimbursement. Discussion and Implications Findings favor greater routinization of hearing screening in primary care. Routinization will be enhanced by improved reimbursement for screening and follow-up; specialist engagement with primary care and the public (including leveraging older adults' social networks); and further research on specific integration options. Background and Objectives Recent guidelines point to lifestyle as a tool for decreasing Alzheimer's disease (AD) risk. To address the limited practice and availability of AD risk reduction interventions, this study aimed to explore the feasibility of a community-level lifestyle intervention targeting high-risk groups. Research Design and Methods Diverse older adults (60+) living in the Richmond, VA, local area, with the following risk factors, incomes below $12,000/year and managing diabetes or cardiovascular disease, were offered weekly lifestyle telephone health coaching for 12 weeks in 2019–2020 (intervention group). The health coaching sessions provided Alzheimer's disease (AD) lifestyle risk reduction education and goal setting/planning. The intervention sample (n  = 40, mean age 68 years (range: 60–76 years), was 90% African American/Black (n  = 36) and 45% male (n  = 18). Thereafter, in 2021–2022, n  = 37 individuals in the same area were recruited as a comparison group and not given health coaching (control group), mean age of 65.5 years (range: 57–83 years), 92% African American/Black (n  = 34), and 50% male (n  = 18). Results Repeated-measures intervention effects were seen for cognitive ability, indicating greater improvement in the intervention group (p  < .01). Significant difference scores indicated greater cognitive ability (p  < .01) and physical activity (p  < .001) gains in the intervention group, with intervention subjects with reported memory problems showed relatively less physical activity gains (p  < .05). Discussion and Implications This work creates the impetus for future large-scale AD risk reduction investigations to mitigate and improve modifiable risk among diverse older adults. Background and Objectives The role of social factors in diabetes onset has been obscured by wide variation in their conceptualization and operationalization. We apply 3 theoretical frameworks to categorize social relationship variables along several dimensions and identify which dimension(s) are robustly associated with incident diabetes in the older adult population. Research Design and Methods The National Social Life, Health, and Aging Project (n = 2,365) and the Health and Retirement Study (n =11,824) provided longitudinal data from 57 to 90-year-old respondents over a 4- to 5-year period. Logistic regression models were used to test associations of 15 social variables measured identically in both data sets with diabetes onset measured as respondents' first report of a physician's diagnosis. Results In both studies, not being married, experiencing strain in a spousal relationship, and feeling lonely were associated with increased risk for diabetes onset at follow-up. Inconsistent or null findings were observed for social support, social activity, network size, number of friends and relatives, living alone, and closeness to network members. Discussion and Implications Robust findings in 2 large-scale surveys support the importance of the valence dimension (i.e. positive and negative); specifically, alleviating negative aspects of social life might more effectively reduce risk for diabetes than augmenting positive ones. Findings were not aligned with social variables differing on the subjectivity dimension (i.e. structural, functional, and qualitative aspects of social connections). Future work needs consistent conceptualization and measurement of social factors to correctly identify and categorize risk factors for diabetes onset and other health conditions in older adults. Background and Objectives This study explores resilience factors among sexual and gender minority (SGM) midlife and older adults, identifying historical/environmental, psychological, social, and behavioral predictors, and examining variations across racial/ethnic subgroups. By adopting a resilience-focused perspective, this research contributes to understanding strengths in the SGM community in the context of aging. Research Design and Methods Using weighted survey data from Aging with Pride: National Health, Aging, and Sexuality/Gender Study, this research investigates distinct risk and protective factors associated with resilience among SGM midlife and older adults. Subgroup variations were assessed using regression models. Factors moderated by race/ethnicity were integrated into final interaction models. Results Hispanic and Black individuals showed significantly higher resilience than non-Hispanic Whites. Lifetime victimization and day-to-day discrimination were negatively associated with resilience. Positive associations were found for higher income, identity affirmation, larger network size, greater social participation, increased physical activity, and sufficient food intake. Interaction models revealed nuanced patterns by subgroups; education negatively impacted resilience among Black individuals, while income positively influenced Hispanic individuals' resilience. The Other racial/ethnic group demonstrated unique associations between optimal sleep and resilience. Discussion and Implications This study shifts from a deficit-based to a resilience-focused approach among SGM midlife and older adults, revealing key strengths within diverse subgroups. Results underscore the significance of recognizing racial/ethnic differences in factors promoting resilience and posing risks for SGM midlife and older adults. Background and Objective Work discrimination is an important public health problem with consequences for health. This study examined the effect of chronic work discrimination on 4-year changes in HbA1c, as a reflection of glucose control and type 2 diabetes risk in older workers and assessed whether allostatic load (AL) affected the strength of this association. Research Design and Methods We used Health and Retirement Study data (2010–2016, n  = 3,246). Conditional change multinomial logistic regression examined the association between chronic work discrimination, high AL (4 or more out of 8 high-risk biomarkers), and HbA1c, while accounting for relevant covariates. Results Black participants had the highest rates of baseline (22.7%) and follow-up (28%) HbA1c levels, AL (38%), and chronic work discrimination (39%; p  < .01). Severe chronic work discrimination was associated with elevated HbA1c (relative risk ratio [RRR] = 1.61, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.07, 2.43). AL was associated with elevated HbA1c (RRR = 1.49, 95% CI = 1.04, 2.14). Relative to White participants, Hispanic (RRR = 1.52, 95% CI = 1.07, 2.16, RRR = 1.81, 95% CI = 1.051, 3.12), and Black (RRR = 2.42, 95% CI = 1.82, 3.23; RRR = 3.00, 95% CI = 1.97, 4.56) participants had an increased risk of intermediate and elevated HbA1c, respectively. Among those with long job tenure (≥5 years), both moderate (RRR = 1.81, 95% CI = 1.11, 2.96) and severe (RRR = 1.90, 95% CI = 1.15, 3.12) chronic work discrimination was associated with elevated HbA1c. Discussion and Implications Chronic work discrimination was associated with HbA1c; however, no moderating effects of AL were observed. Findings underscore a need for organizational and public health measures to establish strong anti-discrimination laws in the workplace to improve the work environment of older workers and reduce diabetes risk. Background and Objectives People aged 65 and older, deemed most "vulnerable" by public health, were targeted by the coronavirus disease 2019 protection measures, which sought to minimize physical contact and social activities. Older adults living alone were particularly affected by these measures. However, such measures meant to protect the older population may not have necessarily reflected older adults' individual prioritization choices. This study therefore aimed to understand how protecting oneself over the virus was considered in the prioritization of other health and social needs of older adults living alone during the pandemic. Research Design and Methods This study adopted a qualitative design. A total of 17 semistructured interviews were conducted between May 2021 and June 2022 with older adults living alone. All interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim. A reflexive thematic analysis as defined by Braun and Clarke was performed. Results Our analysis showed 2 forms of prioritization across 2 themes. This first theme focused on participants who reported prioritizing protecting themselves over the virus by limiting in-person contact and activities. The second theme showed that although several participants reported that protecting themselves over the virus was important to them, the prioritization of this need was not shared by all and, in some cases, evolved over the course of the pandemic. Discussion and Implications Our study demonstrated heterogeneity in the prioritization of older adults needs. Background and Objectives Historically, aging research has focused primarily on health deterioration and negative aspects associated with aging. This has limited the scope of our understanding of the experience of aging and the relationships between aging and well-being from an integrative biopsychosocial perspective. In the same vein, there is a lack of reliable and valid assessments of aging that capture the positive aspects that characterize and improve the subjective experience of this period of life, particularly one that focuses on psychosocial well-being, including meaningful experiences and activities, group memberships, and general abilities. This study presents the development and validation of the Positive Aging Scale (PAS), a novel self-report assessment. Research Design and Methods This was an online cross-sectional study conducted on 501 UK residents aged ≥60 years. A number of self-reported items and measures of positive aging, general health, well-being, and cognitive functioning were administered to the sample. We used exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses and assessed the dimensionality, reliability, and concurrent criterion-related validity of the PAS. Results The results suggested that a unidimensional solution represents the data well, with the positive aging factor adequately loading on 8 items, and the solution showing factorial invariance between young-old and old participants (i.e. ≥75 years). Total PAS scores positively correlate with general health, well-being, and cognitive functioning. Discussion and Implications The PAS demonstrated strong psychometric properties and the findings highlight correlations between the PAS and key outcomes of positive aging, including general health. Background and Objectives Significant societal and technological changes in the 2010s called for an up-to-date understanding of the digital divide among older adults in the United States. This trend study aimed to examine the effects of race/ethnicity and the intersecting effects of race/ethnicity with other marginalized identities related to gender, income, education, and occupation on the first- and second-level digital divide. Research Design and Methods Utilizing a nationally representative sample of older community dwellers from the National Health and Aging Trends Study, we conducted weighted logistic regressions at 3 time points (2011/2013, 2015, and 2019). The first-level digital divide was measured by access to working phones or computers/laptops; the second-level divide was measured by 7 activities in personal task, social, and health-related Internet use. Results The first-level racial/ethnic digital divide became nonsignificant in 2019, whereas the disparities in all second-level measures persisted. The intersecting effects of race/ethnicity with low education and/or low income became nonsignificant in 2019 for personal-task use. However, the interactions with low education and/or low income became significant for social and health-related use in 2015 and/or 2019. Discussion and Implications This study highlights the persistence of the second-level racial/ethnic digital divide among older community dwellers in the United States, especially the exacerbated social and health-related digital divide for people of color with low socioeconomic status. By considering intersections of marginalized social identities, policymakers and stakeholders should develop targeted strategies to bridge the digital divide, promote health outcomes, and reduce health disparities. Background and Objectives Previous research has tended to prioritize the condition of dementia when investigating positive lived experiences, while there is no evidence that well-being becomes fundamentally different when living with dementia. The current exploratory qualitative study examined how people living with dementia describe how they realize their well-being, without treating dementia as a central concern, and specifically addressed people who are successful in maintaining their well-being. Research Design and Methods Semistructured face-to-face interviews (n = 16) and 2 focus groups (n = 13) were conducted with community-dwelling older people living with dementia, aged 65–93 years (68% male). Conversations covered contributors to experienced life satisfaction, and life enjoyment, and were analyzed using inductive thematic analysis. Results Two main themes described how people realize well-being. (1) To live a fulfilling life , participants engaged in activities in order to feel useful and relaxed, and they engaged with others, by interacting and sharing with others, and relying on others. (2) To have a positive attitude toward life , participants appreciated the good things in their current life, their lived life, and about their own person, and positively coped with difficulties by accepting them as part of life, not dwelling on the negative, and actively addressing difficulties. Discussion and Implications The results appear to reflect universal ways of realizing well-being, justifying the use of universal models of well-being for people living with dementia. Recently, scholars have highlighted the detrimental consequences of technology-based ageism. Digital technology (DT) is commonly discoursed as an opportunity to promote Successful Aging. Nevertheless, the theoretical implications of ageism, DT, and Successful Aging are underexplored. This paper presents a new theoretical model of Digital Engagement and Ageism (D-EngAge), which elaborates on the potential impacts of ageism on digital engagement and participation in later life and explains how ageism may pose a threat to realizing the potential of DT to promote Successful Aging. The D-EngAge model was developed based on a synthesis of findings from 12 recent studies we conducted on the intersection of ageism and DT. Findings were synthesized through Iversen's clasification of four dimensions of ageism, demonstrating how ageism as a multifaceted construct has a reciprocal relationship with digital engagement on the micro- (individual), meso- (social interaction), and macro-levels (discourses and societal practices). Consequently, digital engagement on these levels may exacerbate or reduce technology-based ageism. This forum paper identifies ageism as a barrier to utilizing DT, critically discusses power imbalances, and deconstructs Successful Aging discourses regarding digital engagement. Theoretical implications and recommendations for future interventions and policy measures to mitigate ageism and promote digital engagement and participation in later life are presented. Background and Objectives Population aging has led to an increased interest in cognitive health and, in particular, the role that stress plays in cognitive disparities. This paper extends previous work by characterizing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) stress type prevalence and its association with cognitive health in metro-Detroit among Black, Middle Eastern/Arab (MENA), and White older adults. We used generalized linear models to compare groups on sociodemographic, objective stress, and social stress indicators. Multiple group structural equation models evaluated whether COVID-19 stress predicted cognitive health and whether that association varied across racial/ethnic groups. Results MENA and Black older adults reported higher levels of objective stress than Whites. There were no racial/ethnic group differences in social stress. More objective stress was associated with better cognitive health, and more social stress was associated with worse cognitive health. The positive effect of objective stress was especially apparent for White older adults. Discussion and Implications Though it appears that minority stress was not exacerbated in the context of pandemic stress, links between greater objective stress and better cognitive health apparent among White older adults were not evident among MENA or Black older adults. Broadening health disparities research by including underrepresented populations allows us to elevate scientific knowledge by clarifying what is universal and what is unique about the stress process. Background and Objectives Nowadays people increasingly try to take control over the end of their lives by anticipating end-of-life choices. Explication of these choices is encouraged using advance care planning (ACP). We aim to deepen our understanding of how choice-making processes are lived in real life, exploring the experience of community-dwelling older adults and their close ones over time. Research Design and Methods A multiperspective and longitudinal approach grounded in phenomenology was chosen. Ten triads consisting of an older adult (75+) and 2 close ones (n = 30) were interviewed, twice individually and once as a group, over 20 months (=70 interviews). Data were thematically analyzed both longitudinally and from all 3 perspectives. Results The essential meaning of anticipatory choice-making processes was described as a dynamic and relationally entangled decisional process, to navigate between paradoxical choices for an opaque future. Three fields of tension were created due to ambivalence in these choice-making processes: navigation between having and losing control, between taking away and burdening with responsibility, and between expressing and holding back oneself. Discussion and Implications Anticipation of choices for hypothetical end-of-life scenarios turned out to be complex and ambivalent. Most older adults resisted ambivalence and ignored complexity in an attempt to stay in control over their end of life. The burdening impact of choices on close ones illuminated the relationality of choice-making processes. Background and Objectives Social isolation has been recognized as a social problem with negative health consequences. Using data from 3 waves of the Health and Retirement Study, this study aimed to examine the long-term impact of social isolation on loneliness and depressive symptoms and to explore the moderating effect of resilience. Research Design and Methods This study comprised 3,681 U.S. adults aged 60 and older at the baseline wave. Social isolation index was constructed using 5 indicators, including not married or cohabitating with a partner, no social participation, and less than monthly contacts with children, family members, or friends. Loneliness was measured by the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) Loneliness Scale and depressive symptoms were measured by the Center for Epidemiological Studies—Depression scale. The moderator of resilience was assessed by the simplified resilience score. Latent growth curve models with robust standard errors were estimated. Results The results of latent growth curve models showed that social isolation was significantly associated with more initial loneliness and depressive symptoms. However, social isolation was associated with a slower increasing rate of loneliness, but no significant relationship with the change rate of depressive symptoms. Furthermore, resilience significantly buffered the negative effect of social isolation on the initial level of depressive symptoms. Background and Objectives This research critically examined the concept of age-friendliness from the perspectives of older Black lesbian women living in New York City (NYC). The primary aim was to extend existing age-friendly frameworks to more inclusively meet the needs of older lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer adults of color, promoting greater equity and justice. Research Design and Methods Applying principles from critical participatory action research, we collected and analyzed data from 5 focus groups consisting of 5 older Black lesbian women. Participants shared their daily experiences living in NYC and proposed ideas to enhance the age-friendliness of the city to better accommodate their unique needs and experiences. Results Participants called for greater attention to the interaction between identities and structures in relation to age-friendly communities. Historic and contemporary experiences of violence and discrimination, as well as the ever-shifting political context were identified as a key factor shaping their aging experiences. The need for affirming spaces with positive representation of their layered identities was emphasized in the context of age-friendly interventions. Discussion and Implications While dominant age-friendly frameworks are universally accepted for improving the health and wellbeing of older adults, the specific challenges of aging with multiple intersecting marginalized identities necessitate a critical perspective. Background and Objectives Transportation is an important component of dementia-friendly communities. People living with dementia have the right to access transportation services to keep their mobility in their community, which is essential for independence, well-being, and quality of life. This scoping review maps the literature on dementia-friendly transportation services and explores their characteristics to inform future development and research. Research Design and Methods Empirical quantitative and qualitative studies in English or French that informed on transportation services for people living with dementia in the community were searched in 15 databases. Two authors independently screened records and charted relevant characteristics from selected publications. Important findings were summarized with a narrative synthesis approach. Results Thirty-five studies informed on important dimensions of transportation services in urban and/or rural context: availability, accessibility, acceptability, adaptability, and affordability. Important insights were identified: the importance of staff training and attitude, and the challenges of availability of affordable services in the rural context. Emerging policy and program intervention areas include the need for access to quiet areas in transit hubs, training to use mass public transit and mobility management. Discussion and Implications The literature on dementia-friendly transportation services is important in the expansion and maintenance of mobility for people living with dementia in the community. The scope of the existing scientific literature remains limited. Background and Objectives There is a high prevalence of frailty amongst older patients in hospital settings. Frailty guidelines exist but implementation to date has been challenging. Understanding health professional attitudes, knowledge, and beliefs about frailty is critical in understanding barriers and enablers to guideline implementation, and the aim of this study was to understand these in rehabilitation multidisciplinary teams in hospital settings. Research Design and Methods Twenty-three semistructured interviews were conducted with health professionals working in multidisciplinary teams on geriatric and rehabilitation wards in Adelaide and Sydney, Australia. Interviews were audio recorded, transcribed, and coded by 2 researchers. A codebook was created and interviews were recoded and applied to the Framework Method of thematic analysis. Results Three domains were developed: diagnosing frailty, communicating about frailty, and managing frailty. Within these domains, 8 themes were identified: (1) diagnosing frailty has questionable benefits, (2) clinicians don't use frailty screening tools, (3) frailty can be diagnosed on appearance and history, (4) frailty has a stigma, (5) clinicians don't use the word "frail" with patients, (6) frailty isn't always reversible, (7) there is a lack of continuity of care after acute admission, and (8) the community setting lacks resources. Discussion and Implications Implementation of frailty guidelines will remain challenging while staff avoid using the term "frail," don't perceive benefit of using screening tools, and focus on the individual aspects of frailty rather than the syndrome holistically. Clinical champions and education about frailty identification, reversibility, management, and communication techniques may improve the implementation of frailty guidelines in hospitals. Background and Objectives The coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19) adversely affected the health of middle-aged and older adults and altered their economic outlook. Several national polls revealed older adults felt stress about money and many reported difficulties in paying expenses during 2021. Although such descriptive reports have raised awareness, peer-reviewed studies utilizing panel data can offer additional insight. As such, the purpose of this study was to contribute to this growing literature by examining the demographic, economic, and health factors associated with employment and the perceived risk of running out of money for middle-aged and older adults during the pandemic. Research Design and Methods This study utilized the April–May 2020, April–May 2021, and March 2022 waves of the Understanding America Study. Next, a dynamic panel data model was formulated to account for reverse causality and unobserved heterogeneity with a sample of 2,302 adults between the ages of 50 and 74. Results Employment (−2.77, p  < .05) was negatively associated with the perceived risk of running out of money. Male, higher education levels, currently married, and health insurance status also exhibited a negative association. Meanwhile, a positive association was found for non-White (6.79, p  < .01). Discussion and Implications Financial well-being is an important consideration in later life and what role employment played during the COVID-19 pandemic is a worthwhile examination. Background and Objectives Throughout the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, older adults developed coping strategies to adapt to the necessary social distancing precautions; however, over time, especially as vaccines became available, their need and ability to adapt and cope shifted. This longitudinal, mixed-methods study investigates changes in older adults' perceptions of coping across the first 2 years of the pandemic. Research Design and Methods Between April 2020 and June 2022, 5 waves of interviews were conducted with 76 Midwestern older adults aged 70–97. At each timepoint, participants rated their level of perceived coping. They also answered a series of open-ended questions about their current daily life, experiences, and perceptions during the pandemic. Results Repeated-measure ANOVA indicated participants' perceived coping significantly increased over 2 years and qualitative explanations contextualized these shifts. Thematic coding of interview transcripts identified themes of: (1) taking problem-focused approaches and (2) cultivating emotional resiliency, with multiple subthemes nested within each. Subtheme meanings shifted once vaccines were available, as participants adapted to a "new normal" lifestyle and appreciated their own resilience. Discussion and Implications Findings suggest older adults had nuanced and shifting coping experiences throughout the initial 2 years of the pandemic, but overall coped by drawing on life experiences. Background and Objectives Healthcare services are rarely designed to meet the needs of Indigenous people, resulting in culturally unsafe care and assessment tools. This paper describes a collaboration between North East Behavioural Supports Ontario (NEBSO), university researchers, and Indigenous communities to adapt a biographical assessment tool used by NEBSO to be culturally appropriate and safe for Indigenous older adults (55+) in long-term care facilities in Ontario, Canada. Research Design and Methods Over 36 months, this project applied an Indigenized, community-based participatory research (CBPR) and cultural safety framework to the adaptation process. Qualitative data sources include the guidance of an Indigenous Elder, an Anishinaabe Language Expert Group, and focus groups conducted along the North Shore of Lake Huron, Sudbury, and Cochrane, Ontario. Results The adapted tool shifts the focus from personhood to relationships, includes culturally relevant domains, and supports trauma-informed approaches. Five themes were identified during the adaptation process: (1) practicing a relational approach to care, (2) valuing Indigenous language, (3) understanding Indigenous trauma, (4) respecting cultural values and understandings, and (5) addressing systemic barriers to culturally safe care. Discussion and Implications Themes elucidated from this research process can inform future studies adapting mainstream practice tools and developing new tools for Indigenous populations. The collaboration and approach to this adaptation process demonstrated how cultural safety at systemic and practice levels can be addressed through CPBR partnerships between universities, organizations, and Indigenous communities. As we age, the ability to move is foundational to health. Life space is one measure of a person's ability to move and engage in activity beyond the home. A separate but related concept is activity space, a measurement of a person's spatial behaviors and visited locations that include social networks, neighborhoods, and institutions. In this article, we integrate the literature on life space and activity space, discussing how physical function is not only determined by individual capabilities, but also by the surrounding social and environmental factors, which may limit their agency. We show how structural racism contributes to inequities within this paradigm linking related concepts of movement, agency, belonging, and timing. Background and Objectives The number of older adults diagnosed with dementia is expected to more than double by mid-century. Monitoring older adults' cognitive functioning is essential for the early detection of dementia, which can increase treatment efficacy and slow the disease progression. Current approaches to detect preclinical dementia are expensive, invasive, and are not accessible to everyone. This study aimed to determine whether technology use patterns could be used as an indicator of cognitive change. Research Design and Methods Using 6 waves (2015–2020) from the National Health and Aging Trends Study, we examined within-person and between-person effects of stopping 4 types of technology use on 4 cognitive outcomes. Results Our analyses showed that stopping the use of the Internet, computers, and tablets, and sending texts and e-mails were related to cognitive decline. Background and Objectives The prevalence of resident obesity in nursing homes has increased dramatically from 22% to 28% between 2005 and 2015. To provide care for people with obesity, nursing homes have changed their admissions, staffing, and equipment, but underlying these changes are increased resources and financial costs of care. The purpose of this study is to describe nursing home organizational aspects of caring for older adults with obesity, with a focus on economic factors, from the perspective of nursing home staff and leadership. Research Design and Methods This qualitative study used descriptive approaches; data were collected through semistructured telephone interviews. Of 77 nursing home staff and leaders identified as potential study participants, 6 were ineligible, and 71 participated in the study through interviews conducted from 2019 to 2022. Results A total of 4 primary themes described the issues surrounding the cost of care for obesity in nursing homes: inefficient and risky use of staff time in a setting of persistent staff shortage, expensive and unique equipment needs, inadequate general reimbursement with an absence of obesity-specific reimbursement supplements, and competing short- and long-term management solutions. Discussion and Implications This qualitative study of nursing home staff and leadership underscores a need for improved approaches to funding obesity care within existing nursing payment models. Background and Objectives Although the relationship between mortality and objective successful aging (health, functional ability, social engagement) is clear, the relationship between subjective successful aging (SSA) and mortality is inconclusive. Building on the broader literature regarding psychological well-being, these analyses examine the relationship between SSA and mortality, adjusting for demographic, health, and lifestyle characteristics with known mortality risks. Research Design and Methods We analyzed self-report data collected between 2006 and 2008 from 5,483 people. In addition to demographic, health, and lifestyle variables, we measured SSA using a valid, reliable measure. Over the course of 3,285 days, 695 people died. We computed 4 sequential Cox proportional hazard models to examine the association between SSA and time to death. The first model included only SSA; Model 2 added demographic characteristics; Model 3 added health characteristics; Model 4 added lifestyle characteristics. Results We found that SSA had a significant association with mortality, accounting for known mortality risk factors. Each 1-point rise in SSA decreased the risk of mortality by 3% (0.97; 95% confidence interval = 0.95–0.99; p <.05). The probability of death within 9 years for persons with SSA scores from 0 to 5 was 45%; for persons with SSA scores from 25 to 30, risk of mortality was less than 10%. Discussion and Implications Findings provide evidence that lower SSA scores reveal greater risk for mortality beyond demographic, health, and lifestyle variables. Background and Objectives Public health concerns surrounding social isolation and loneliness heightened during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, as infection prevention measures led to increased feelings of loneliness and depression. Our objective was to evaluate the implementation of the HOW-R-U? program, during the pandemic (March 2020–December 2021). HOW-R-U? is a weekly volunteer-delivered telephone program designed to facilitate social connection and ease feelings of social isolation, loneliness, and depression in older people. Research Design and Methods This pragmatic study used the Implementation Framework for Aged Care to adapt and implement HOW-R-U? in an Australian aged and community care organization and a tertiary health service in Melbourne. The evaluation involved analysis of program data, semistructured interviews, and surveys with program recipients, volunteers, and referrers. A process evaluation was conducted alongside an assessment of outcomes including pre- and post-symptoms of isolation, depression, and loneliness. Results The implementation evaluation indicated that codesigned systems and processes effectively supported the ongoing implementation of HOW-R-U? with transition into business as usual across both organizations. Recipients reported that telephone calls had a positive impact on their lives, whereas volunteers reported enjoyment of supporting others. Several challenges were identified, namely in program reach and fidelity. Background and Objectives People with intellectual disability are at increased risk of dementia at an earlier age. This is the first study to explore experiences of couples with an intellectual disability when one partner has dementia. Research Design and Methods Four people with intellectual disability whose partner had dementia and one partner who had both an intellectual disability and dementia took part in narrative life story interviews. One of the interviews was conducted as a couple giving direct perspectives from 4 couples overall. Additionally, 13 semistructured interviews were conducted with 9 social care professionals and 4 family members. This provided perspectives of the relationships of a further 4 couples, which collectively led to data on 8 couples. Results The emotional impact of a dementia diagnosis, planning for the future, and fear of separation was noted by couples with intellectual disability. Partners took on caring roles thus challenging views of being solely care-receivers. Families spoke of commitment and longevity in relationships, whilst social care staff highlighted how their own information needs changed recognizing the importance of intellectual disability and dementia-specific knowledge. Discussion and Implications Couples with intellectual disability continue to enjoy intimate relationships into later life and will face common conditions in older age including dementia. Those who provide support need to ensure that they are sensitive to the previous experience and life story of each couple and have specific knowledge of how dementia can affect people with intellectual disability. Background and Objectives The primary aim of this Stage IB randomized controlled trial (RCT) was to test the preliminary effects of a dual-task exergaming telerehabilitation intervention on cognition and aerobic fitness, compared to aerobic exercise (AEx) only and attention control (stretching) in older adults with subjective cognitive decline. Research Design and Methods This RCT randomized 39 participants on a 2:1:1 allocation ratio to supervised exergame (n  = 20), AEx (n  = 11), and stretching (n  = 8) for 12 weeks. The dual-task exergaming was concurrent moderate-intensity cycling and BrainFitRx cognitive telerehabilitation. Cognition was assessed by NIH Toolbox Cognitive Battery and aerobic fitness by 6-minute walk test (6MWT) and shuttle walk test. Results The participants were 74.6 (7.4) years old and 69% were female. The effect of time was significant, F (1, 23.9) = 13.16, p  = .001, for the Fluid Composite score, and significant within-group changes were seen for the exergame group, t (14.08) = 2.53, p  = .024, d  = 0.33. Between-group changes did not reach significant levels for any cognitive test. Between-group changes for the 6MWT were not significant. Discussion and Implications The exergame participants further improved their fluid cognition, whereas the AEx and stretching groups did not, indicating a potential synergistic effect from AEx and cognitive training. The aerobic fitness changes were similar between the exergame and AEx-only groups, indicating that the feasibility of adding cognitive training to AEx concurrently without sacrificing gains in aerobic fitness from AEx. This study shows the flexibility of exergame delivery and its potentially therapeutic effects in persons at risk for Alzheimer's dementia. Background and Objectives Although it is well established that psychological disorders and osteoporosis risk are linked, how the relationship manifests is not. This study examines depressive symptoms and a history of psychological problems as potential risk factors for osteoporosis diagnosis, adjudicating between 4 theoretical models rarely tested together. We analyze these models across multiple domains (i.e. demographic, socioeconomic, and health-related), while accounting for bone mineral density (BMD) scans, which have been shown to improve health equity across sex and racial/ethnic identities. Research Design and Methods Data from the 2012–2016, nationally representative, population-based, cohort Health and Retirement Study (N  = 18,224–18,359) were used to estimate 4 logistic regression models with the outcome of osteoporosis diagnosis. Approximately 50% of the sample identified as female and 50% as male, while about 81% identified as White/European American, 11% as Black/African American, and 8% as another race/ethnicity. The key independent variables were depressive symptoms—measured using two common scales—and a history of psychological problems. Results A history of psychological problems and one depressive symptoms measure were associated with the odds of osteoporosis diagnosis in the presence of other known risk factors for osteoporosis. Discussion and Implications Support for the theoretical models was limited. Evidence suggests possible directionality; a history of psychological distress may be a risk factor for osteoporosis, though we cannot rule out the other direction. Public health professionals and healthcare providers should consider a history of psychological problems as a risk factor for osteoporosis when deciding whether to recommend a BMD scan. Background and Objectives Although coordinated care (CC) seeks to improve patient experiences and ultimately health outcomes, evidence from empirical research on the impacts of CC is mixed. This study examined the relationship between CC and healthcare outcomes over a 4-year period among older adults with multiple chronic conditions. Research Design and Methods This observational cohort study is based on data from the 2016–2020 Health and Retirement Study. Analysis is limited to respondents with 2+ chronic conditions who completed an experimental module on CC in 2016 (n  = 906). Three domains of CC were assessed: perceptions, informal (family/friends) and formal (healthcare staff) tangible support, and technical support (using a "patient portal"). The longitudinal relationship between CC and health (e.g. pain, functioning, and self-rated health [SRH]) and healthcare (e.g. doctor visits, hospitalization, and care satisfaction) outcomes was investigated using mixed-effects models. Results Better perceptions of CC were associated with lower odds of ADL limitations (Odds ratio [OR] = 0.91; 95% CI = 0.84–0.99) and greater satisfaction with care (B = 0.04, 95% CI = 0.02–0.06). Receipt of more informal tangible support was associated with 1.34 higher odds of ADL limitations (95% CI = 1.19–1.51) and 1.74 higher odds of hospitalization (95% CI = 1.07–1.21). Use of technical support was associated with better SRH and greater satisfaction with care. Discussion and Implications The longitudinal relationship between CC and health is multifaceted. Although positive perceptions and more technical support have beneficial effects on health outcomes, higher utilization of tangible support may reflect a higher demand among older adults with more complex healthcare needs. Background and Objectives Gerontology offers a range of participatory research options with more commonly used community participatory-based research or participatory action research approaches. Photovoice's visual representation of lived experiences offers a unique opportunity for older adults to fully cocreate research. This article describes the process of codesigning a virtual photovoice study with older adults. The design process is described in 3 phases: codesign during the initial study design, throughout the study and data-collection process, and during dissemination. Research Design and Methods In this methodological article, substantive findings from an Institutional Review Board approved study where older adults created photos of the meaning of "home" through Zoom interviews are used to illustrate codesign in a virtual photovoice study. The process includes engagement with the Aging PCOR Learning Collaborative's Older Adult Subcommittee, Healthier Black Elders' Community Advisory Board, and older adults in the study. Results Work with advisory groups offered more dimensions to the study's planning, conduction, and dissemination, expanding the study's reach, inclusion, and framing. This collaboration created a greater exchange of dialogue and bidirectional flow of expression. The researcher became the subject, and older adults navigated study protocols. Older adults' increased self-reflection, spontaneous essays, and shared resources with the researcher expanded understanding. Older adults' revisions of this manuscript deepened content exploration. Discussion and Implications This article highlights the role of codesign throughout all a study's phases, where a researcher can work within the hyphen expanding connections with older adults. Fictional stories set in care homes have increased in the last decades and, with them, the perspectives from which care homes are constructed and represented have become diversified. Through the alternative worlds that are offered by literary narratives, these stories allow the reader to glimpse into the increasingly varied possibilities of care that a residential settlement can offer. At the same time, they highlight the attributes attached to human beings once their bodies are not regarded as fully functional or able by their carers and society at large. Jackie Kay's short story "These are not my clothes" (2011) presents a highly symbolic care-home narrative in which constant practices of depersonalized care and infantilization lead to the inevitable dehumanization of the residents and their eventual deterioration. Through the viewpoint of its female protagonist, Margaret, Kay creates a personal, poignant and, at times, also humorous narrative of care that undermines prevailing images of the so-called fourth age as a period of extreme cognitive deterioration. Drawing from theories of care and the interdisciplinary field of aging studies, especially in connection with theories of embodiment and old age and social approaches to aging, this article offers a close reading of Kay's short story as both an assertive narrative on the fourth age, and as an insubordinate story of care, which can serve as a model to both gerontologists and care practitioners. Research Design and Methods Using the 2018 Health and Retirement Study Cannabis module completed by 1,372 respondents aged 50 and older, we distinguished current cannabis users from those who have never used or have some prior use. We linked 2018 and 2016 core HRS data and used multinomial regressions to identify associations among current use, attitudes, place of residence, as well as current (2018) and past (2016) medical conditions, pain, and sleep issues. We also examined associations among cannabis use, hospital stays, and outpatient medical visits. Results Past-year cannabis use reached 10.3% among aging Americans. Attitudes toward cannabis have changed over time with 4 of 5 survey respondents currently holding a favorable attitude. Attitude and state of residence were associated with current use. Cannabis users reported higher levels of pain, were more likely to use prescription opioids, and report activity limitations in both 2016 and 2018. Associations between cannabis use and sleep issues or concurrent healthcare use were not observed. Discussion and Implications Changing attitudes and state legalization appear important for late middle-aged and older persons, and as many as 1 of every 5 persons over 50 may be using cannabis by 2030. Cannabis use among aging Americans warrants increased attention from care providers, program administrators, and policymakers, especially as a prevention or harm reduction strategy relative to prescription opioids. Background and Objectives Gate control theory and fear-avoidance model of chronic pain posit that biopsychosocial factors can modulate pain. Nonpharmacological interventions are recommended in managing chronic pain, but little information is available regarding their efficacy in older adults. We examined and compared the efficacy of different nonpharmacological intervention approaches for chronic pain management among older adults via meta-analysis and subgroup analysis. Research Design and Methods Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines (PROSPERO number CRD42020222767), a systematic search was undertaken using MEDLINE, Embase, and PsycINFO up to March 21, 2022. Randomized controlled trials were included, and data were pooled using a random-effects meta-analysis model. Risk of bias was assessed using a quality rating scale for psychological interventions. Results Twenty-five trials (N = 2,394 participants) were identified. Six types of nonpharmacological interventions were compared with control conditions (sham/attention control and treatment as usual). Nonpharmacological interventions were associated with significant reductions in pain intensity, pain interference, depressive symptoms, catastrophizing beliefs, and improvement in physical performance (standardized mean differences −0.34 to 0.54). Subgroup analyses based on different nonpharmacological approaches revealed the benefits of psychological approaches combined with physical activity. Discussion and Implications Nonpharmacological interventions, particularly those adopting psychological approaches and physical activity, have a small but statistically significant effect on chronic pain management in older adults. Reduction in pain interference may be related to reduced catastrophizing beliefs, thus providing support for the fear-avoidance model. Background and Objectives This study aimed to critically examine current knowledge on the role of personality in successful aging, considering Hooker and McAdams' 3-level, 6-foci model of personality. The aim was also to pinpoint knowledge gaps that research should address in the future. Research Design and Methods We carried out a scoping review of the literature on successful aging and personality, following the 5-step framework proposed by Arksey and O'Malley and further expanded by Levac et al. Results Research into the role of personality in successful aging has grown significantly over the last 20 years. However, the increasing number of publications on the topic was primarily accounted for by studies focused on Layer 1 and particularly Layer 2 of McAdams' model of personality, with Layer 3 being scarcely addressed. Research that included more than 1 layer of personality was rare. Discussion and Implications Our study pinpointed gaps that should be considered in future research in this area. These gaps were related to advancing toward agreed-upon definitions of successful aging and personality, broadening the scope of research on this topic, and integrating personality dimensions on research on successful aging. Background and Objectives Although the vulnerabilities stemming from the intersection of aging and migration are widely recognized, the migration contexts and the factors influencing the mental health of older unforced migrants have received scant attention. This review explores the drivers of unforced migrations in later life and the individual, relational, and structural factors influencing their mental health and well-being. Research Design and Methods Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines, a systematic search of 7 databases for English peer-reviewed journal articles was conducted. A total of 21 studies were identified and analyzed inductively. Results The review classified motivations for migration as push factors and pull factors: push factors such as escaping structural inequities in the homeland and pull factors included seeking better lifestyle opportunities and reuniting with family. The positive determinants of mental health included cordial family relationships, paid employment, the presence of a partner, and strong support networks. Advanced age, absence of a partner, lifestyle changes, lack of intergenerational support, poor language proficiency, unfavorable policies, lack of access to resources, and systemic biases negatively affected the mental health of older unforced migrants. Discussion and Implications The review highlights the need to recognize the diversity among older migrants to develop policies and programs that address their specific circumstances. Recognizing their strengths, rather than focusing solely on their vulnerabilities will help create a more positive and supportive environment, enabling them to thrive in their new communities. Background and Objectives The complexities surrounding aging, dementia, and care are timely issues that transcend beyond institutional boundaries, evincing a critical debate on later life across disciplines. The aim of this study is to offer fresh insights into the intricate paradigms of living and growing older with dementia. The study focuses on the Nobel Prize-winning author Annie Ernaux's memoir  I Remain in Darkness  (1999), which provides a candid account of her mother's journey through dementia from its onset to the gradual decline.  Research Design and Methods This article employs the theoretical frameworks of literary gerontology, illness narratives and life writing to address the challenges of aging, dementia and care that are represented in Ernaux's memoir. It also addresses societal attitudes and stigma associated with aging and dementia by exploring the embarrassment that individuals and families experience when confronted with the deteriorating mental health of their loved ones.  Results Ernaux's memoir explores the nuances of dementia and caregiving within both the familial and institutional context, and sheds light on the complex relationship between a mother and a daughter. Through the act of witnessing, Ernaux embarks on a path of healing, which allows her to confront her past wounds and better navigate the challenges that lie ahead. However, Ernaux's confessional memoir also troubles the ethics of life writing and identity issues, and seems to perpetuate the pathologizing medical gaze through the exposure of her mother's vulnerability and intimacy in the face of dementia and care. Discussion and Implications Ernaux's account of her mother's dementia and aging is both a confessional piece of writing and a narrative therapy, which reveals the challenges of aging, illness, and unresolved family tensions. Her work illuminates the interconnectedness between the past, present, and future, and shows that illness narratives can act as a catalyst for transformative change, identity formation, and self-reflection. The article addresses the intricacies of old age, showcasing how life writing and humanities-based inquiry can bring to the fore key aspects of the latest stages in life, which are often unvoiced because they represent the most unpleasant and feared aspects of aging in contemporary society. Background and Objectives Social disconnection is highly prevalent in older adults and is associated with frailty. It is unclear which aspects of social disconnection are most associated with frailty, which ones are difference-making, and which combination of social factors are directly linked to frailty. Research Design and Methods We conducted a secondary coincidence analysis (CNA) of 1,071 older adults from the Rush Memory and Aging Project (mean age 79.3 ± 7.1; 75.8% female) to identify combinations of social factors that are difference-making for frailty. We included 7 demographic (e.g. age, sex, socioeconomic status) and structural (e.g. social network), functional (e.g. social support, social activity), and quality (e.g. loneliness) aspects of social connection. An established cut score of 0.2 on a frailty index was used to define frailty as the outcome. Results CNA produced 46 solution models for the presence of frailty in the data set. The top-scoring model was underfit, leaving a final complex solution path for frailty with the highest fit-robustness score that met the fit parameter cutoffs. We found that the combination of loneliness, low social activity, and older age was present 82% of the time when frailty was present. Discussion and Implications The combination of loneliness, social activity, and old age is difference-making for frailty, and supports the inclusion of social factors in frailty prevention and intervention. Background and Objectives There are growing numbers of older adults with long-term vision impairment who are likely to experience everyday activity challenges from their impairment in conjunction with age-related changes. Technology has potential to support activity engagement. To develop effective technologies and interventions, we need to understand the context of activity challenges and identify unmet support needs. Research Design and Methods The Aging Concerns, Challenges, and Everyday Solution Strategies (ACCESS) study is a mixed-method approach to explore everyday challenges of people aging with long-term disabilities. Participants included 60 adults aging with long-term vision impairment (63% female; M age = 67, SD  = 4.6) who completed in-depth, structured interviews exploring the nature of everyday challenges and their unmet support needs for activity engagement. We conducted a content analysis using a deductive and inductive approach to build a detailed coding scheme of challenge codes and subcodes. Results The analyses provided detailed insights about the nature of challenges people aging with vision impairment experience when performing specific instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs) in the context of home maintenance, transportation, shopping/finance, and managing health. Vision-related challenges and participation restrictions were identified for several activities that require reading, navigation, and identification (e.g. shopping, medication management, public transportation). Emergent challenge themes for performing IADLs included personal limitations (e.g. physical, cognitive, financial) and environmental barriers (e.g. accessibility, technology, transportation). Discussion and Implications Contextual examples of IADL challenges among individuals aging with vision impairment highlight opportunities for technology design and innovation to support participation in everyday activities. Background and Objectives Sleep disorders often predict or co-occur with cognitive decline. Yet, little is known about how the relationship unfolds among older adults at risk for cognitive decline. To examine the associations of sleep disorders with cognitive decline in older adults with unimpaired cognition or impaired cognition (mild cognitive impairment and dementia). Research Design and Methods A total of 5,822 participants (M age = 70) of the National Alzheimer's Coordinating Center database with unimpaired or impaired cognition were followed for 3 subsequent waves. Four types of clinician-diagnosed sleep disorders were reported: sleep apnea, hyposomnia/insomnia, REM sleep behavior disorder, or "other." Cognition over time was measured by the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) or an estimate of general cognitive ability (GCA) derived from scores based on 12 neuropsychological tests. Growth curve models were estimated adjusting for covariates. Results In participants with impaired cognition, baseline sleep apnea was related to better baseline MoCA performance (b  = 0.65, 95% confidence interval [95% CI] = [0.07, 1.23]) and less decline in GCA over time (b  = 0.06, 95% CI = [0.001, 0.12]). Baseline insomnia was related to better baseline MoCA (b  = 1.54, 95% CI = [0.88, 2.21]) and less decline in MoCA over time (b  = 0.56, 95% CI = [0.20, 0.92]). Furthermore, having more sleep disorders (across the 4 types) at baseline predicted better baseline MoCA and GCA, and less decline in MoCA and GCA over time. These results were only found in those with impaired cognition and generally consistent when using self-reported symptoms of sleep apnea or insomnia. Background and Objectives The concept of aging in place is acknowledged as the preference of older adults, yet without consideration of the intersections of diversity in later life, it is critiqued as unattainable, unrealistic, or even undesirable. This gave rise to the exploration of what is needed to age in the right place (AIRP). Building on existing research, we examined the meaning of AIRP to older adults (aged 55+ years) who have experienced homelessness. Research Design and Methods We conducted photovoice interviews with 11 residents of a temporary housing program in Metro Vancouver (Canada). Results Using thematic analysis, we organized meanings of AIRP according to (1) Where one lives—the physical and social environment, (2) Where one goes and what one does, and (3) How one feels in "the right place." Discussion and Implications Participants meanings' of AIRP are applied to Maslow's hierarchy of needs. That is, when basic needs of shelter are met, participants' considerations of "the right place to age" extend beyond affordable housing to include feeling safe and comfortable in one's home and neighborhood and having access to meaningful engagement and activities—both in vibrant urban districts and naturescapes—enabled by affordable transportation. Our examination of what AIRP means to this group of older adults broadens current conceptualizations. Given the increase in homelessness among older adults, it is imperative that policymakers and practitioners are cognizant of meanings of AIRP so diverse older adults can not only age in place, but can thrive in the right place. Background and Objectives Fall incidents from unsafe home environments are frequent in older-adult homes but the literature is ambiguous whether it is the presence/absence, or the interplay of such conditions and physical functioning that is of salience. We therefore estimated whether unsafe home environment is adversely associated with subsequent falls among older adults and what proportion of this association was mediated through limitations in daily and instrumental activities of daily living (ADL/IADL). Research Design and Methods Using a nationally representative sample of community-dwelling Medicare beneficiaries (≥65 years) in the 2018–2019 National Health and Aging Trends Study (n  = 2,599), we conducted bivariate and multivariable analyses. We examined baseline conditions of home disorders, unsafe bathroom settings, unsafe house/building features, and house disrepairs in 2018 and their relation with subsequent falls in 2019, after controlling for covariates. To assess whether ADL/IADL limitations mediated this relationship, we employed the Karlson–Holm–Breen methodology. Results In 2019, the self-reported prevalence of falls among older adults was estimated at 34.68%. Although baseline home disorders had both a direct (adjusted odds ratio [aOR]: 1.14, 95% confidence interval [CI]:1.03,1.26) and an indirect effect through limitations in ADL and IADL (aOR: 1.01; 95% CI: 1.00,1.03), the relation between unsafe bathroom settings and subsequent falls was unclear. Unsafe house/building features and house disrepairs were not statistically significantly related either directly or indirectly with subsequent falls. Background and Objectives The poor mental health of adults living in aged care needs addressing. Improvements to nutrition and exercise are important, but mental health requires a psychological approach. Self-determination theory finds that autonomy is essential to wellbeing while experiences of being controlled undermine it. A review of existing quantitative data could underscore the importance of autonomy in aged care, and a review of the qualitative literature could inform ways to promote autonomy and avoid control. Testing these possibilities was the objective of this research. Research Design and Methods We conducted a mixed-methods systematic review of studies investigating autonomy, control, and indices of optimal functioning in aged care settings. The search identified 30 eligible reports (19 quantitative, 11 qualitative), including 141 quantitative effect sizes, 84 qualitative data items, and N = 2,668. Quantitative effects were pooled using three-level meta-analytic structural equation models, and the qualitative data were meta-synthesized using a grounded theory approach. Results As predicted, the meta-analysis showed a positive effect of aged care residents' autonomy and their wellness, r = 0.33 [95% CI: 0.27, 0.39], and a negative effect of control, r = −0.16 [95% CI: −0.27, −0.06]. The meta-synthesis revealed seven primary and three sub-themes describing the nuanced ways autonomy, control, and help seeking are manifest in residential aged care settings. Discussion and Implications The results suggest that autonomy should be supported, and unnecessary external control should be minimized in residential aged care, and we discuss ways the sector could strive for both aims. Background and Objectives Aerobic exercise is a cost-effective intervention to improve arterial stiffness, but its effects on older people are unclear; this review aims to determine those effects. Research Design and Methods Five databases were searched for randomized controlled trials of aerobic exercises. Backward and forward citations and clinical trial registries were also reviewed. Data were extracted and synthesized. A random-effects model was used in a meta-analysis. The risk of bias and the certainty of the evidence were also assessed. The protocol of this review was registered (PROSPERO registration number: CRD42022349494). Results Eighteen studies (n  = 775) were identified. Aerobic exercises included cycling, walking, swimming, standing core exercise, bench step exercise, aquarobic exercise, jogging, running, upper-limb cycling, and aquatic walking. Postintervention, improvements were seen in the pulse wave velocity (SMD9 = −0.89, 95% confidence interval (CI)–1.57 to –0.22), arterial velocity–pulse index (MD2 = –6.84, 95% CI –9.05 to –4.63), and arterial pressure–volume index (MD2 = –4.97, 95% CI –6.9 to –3.04), but not in the augmentation index, arterial compliance, or beta stiffness index. Exercise lasting >8 weeks but not 4–8 weeks significantly improved pulse wave velocity. Aerobic exercise had a beneficial effect on healthy older people but not on older people with disease. The overall risk of bias was high in 9 of the included studies, with some concerns in the remaining studies. The certainty of the evidence was very low. Discussion and Implications Aerobic exercises, particularly those lasting >8 weeks, appear to be effective at improving pulse wave velocity in older people postintervention.
