Abstract A high-resolution sedimentological and geochemical analysis of a 21 m sediment sequence of Lake Iseo (Southern Alps, Italy) allowed for the reconstruction of the long-term flood frequency by visual identification of the event layers over the last 12 kyr cal BP. In a previous study that was undertaken on another sediment core from Lake Iseo, these layers were attributed to extreme surface runoff events. However, in this former core, large mass-wasting deposits that induce significant hiatuses did not permit a continuous record of flood events to be established. Such disturbances were absent in the core studied in the present paper. This permitted to establish a high-resolution continuous Holocene record. Based on the flood chronicle and sedimentological and XRF geochemical analyses, we found evidence of a major palaeohydrological transition at approximately 3.8 kyr cal BP, which was previously described as occurring in the western Mediterranean region. The oldest part of the record indeed presents a very low frequency of flood events (<1 flood/century), while after 4 kyr cal BP, the flood frequency increased. This pattern appears to be in agreement with other Southern Alpine paleo flood records. The transition is interpreted as a nonlinear climate response to the orbital-driven gradual decrease in summer insolation at 60°N, which together with the influence of the Mediterranean mesoscale precipitation events, is typical for the Mediterranean climate. However, the comparison of the flood record with the archaeological and historical data from the watershed suggests that human activity during the Roman period in the vicinity of the main tributaries also influenced the flood frequency. Even in a large Alpine lake and >2000 years ago, extreme precipitation events that were recorded through the sedimentation process can hence be impacted by the anthropization of the catchment area pointing the requirement of deeper studies of Earth surface critical zone pluri-millennial dynamics. Abstract This paper illustrates a new compilation of sea-surface hydrographic data (SST mainly) derived from multiproxy reconstructions on high time-resolution (decadal to centennial) marine archives. This compilation is focussed on the boreal Atlantic and gathers Holocene sedimentological records (defining the HAMOC database) which were retrieved in the vicinity of the subpolar and subtropical oceanic gyres. It provides for the first time a 12 ka long and multi-sourced (i.e. from different ecological groups) document of the evolution of sea-surface parameters over the North Atlantic, highlighting common regional trends but also discrepancies which need to be considered and integrated to further understand the Atlantic circulation dynamics and related climatic modes. Selective records have been extracted from the database and their significance tested considering proxy-dependent responses. This sheds light on the importance of intrinsic meaning carried by each proxies, often misconsidered and eluded while they typify critical ecological changes (living depth, seasonality of blooms, ect). To disentangle those changes is not easy and implies integrating artefacts linked both to ecological adaptations and environmental shifts (themselves being nested), but needs urgently to be considered in future works as it is the only way to progress in our knowledges of the (living) ocean resilience to climate hazards. This paper presents the environmental, climate and vegetation changes reconstructed for the last 14.6 kyr cal BP from the Marboré Lake sedimentary sequence, the highest altitude record (2612 m a.s.l.) in the Pyrenees studied up to date. We investigate the sensitivity of this high altitude site to vegetational and climate dynamics and altitudinal shifts during the Holocene by comparing palynological spectra of the fossil sequence and pollen rain content from current moss pollsters. We hypothesize that the input of sediments in lakes at such altitude is strongly controlled by ice phenology (ice-free summer months) and that during cold periods Pollen Accumulation Rate (PAR) and Pollen Concentration (PC) reflect changes in ice-cover and thus is linked to temperature changes. Low sedimentation rates and low PC and PAR occurred during colder periods as the Younger Dryas (GS-1) and the Holocene onset (12.6–10.2 kyr cal BP), suggesting that the lake-surface remained ice-covered for most of the year during these periods. Warmer conditions are not evident until 10.2 kyr cal BP, when an abrupt increase in sedimentation rate, PC and PAR occur, pointing to a delayed onset of the Holocene temperature increase at high altitude. Well-developed pinewoods and deciduous forest dominated the mid montane belt since 9.3 kyr cal BP until mid-Holocene (5.2 kyr cal BP). A downwards shift in the deciduous forest occurred after 5.2 kyr cal BP, in agreement with the aridity trend observed at a regional and Mediterranean context. The increase of herbaceous taxa during the late-Holocene (3.5 kyr cal BP-present) reflects a general trend to reduced montane forest, as anthropogenic disturbances were not evident until 1.3 kyr cal BP when Olea proportions from lowland areas and other anthropogenic indicators clearly expand. Our study demonstrates the need to perform local experimental approaches to check the effect of ice phenology on high altitude lakes sensitivity to vegetation changes to obtain more realistic reconstructions of mountain vegetation belts dynamics. Abstract: High-resolution environmental proxy data from the extratropical North Atlantic prior to the instrumental era are of critical importance to decipher processes and mechanisms of global change. In this regard, shells of the extremely long-lived bivalve mollusc, Arctica islandica (Linnaeus, 1767), have gained particular attention during the last decade because they serve as reliable, subseasonally resolved multi-proxy archives of environmental variability in that very region. With a lifespan of more than 500years, A. islandica is the longest-lived solitary animal. Its shell grows periodically throughout life and contains distinct annual and daily growth increments. These growth patterns function as a calendar that can be used to place each shell portion into a precise temporal context. Furthermore, changing environmental conditions are encoded in the shells in the form of variable increment widths and geochemical properties. By means of cross-dating, growth increment width chronologies from different specimens can be combined into much longer time-series, so-called composite or master chronologies, covering centuries to millennia and many generations of bivalves. The present paper provides a comprehensive review of research on this species with a special focus on long-term climate and environmental reconstructions using isotopes, trace and minor elements and variations in shell growth. This review also highlights challenges involved with the interpretation of proxy data obtained from A. islandica and identifies future research needs. A. islandica does not easily reveal its secrets. It needs a holistic approach to unlock the multi-proxy records stored in their shells. High resolution palaeoenvironmental records in Far-Eastern Russia are rare, and the Kamchatka Peninsula is among the least studied areas of the region. This paper describes a record spanning the last ca. 11,000 yr, obtained from a bog in the southern part of Kamchatka. The radiocarbon dated core was analysed for pollen, testate amoebae, charcoal and loss-on-ignition (LOI). The vegetation during the early Holocene was dominated by grasses (Poaceae), birch ( Betula ) and heath (Ericaceae p. p.). Around 10,300 cal yr BP there was a substantial change in the vegetation cover to shrub alder ( Alnus viridis s.l.) stands with sedges and ferns (Polypodiophyta) as well as herbs such as meadow rue ( Thalictrum ) in the understory. In the surroundings of Utka peatlands started to form. The variations in the vegetation cover were most probably caused by climatic changes. At the beginning of sediment accumulation, before 10,300 cal yr BP, the composition of the vegetation points to cooler summers and/or decreased annual precipitation. Around 10,300 cal yr BP, changes in vegetation occurred due to rising temperatures and/or changed water regimes. Increased abundancies of dry indicating testate amoebae after 9100 cal yr BP point to intermediate to dry soil conditions. Between 8600 and 7700 cal yr BP tree alder ( Alnus incana ) was widely spread at the site which probably indicates optimal environmental conditions. The tephra layer at 381–384.5 cm (ca. 8500 cal yr BP) produces a strong impact on the testate amoebae assemblages. At 7700 cal yr BP there was a sudden drop of A. incana in the local vegetation. From this time on, A. incana and also A. viridis decrease continuously whereas Betula gradually increases. The upper part of the sequence (after 6300 cal yr BP) shows higher abundancies of meadowsweet ( Filipendula ) and sweet gale ( Myrica ) pollen. After 6300 cal yr BP, changes in testate amoebae demonstrate variable soil moisture conditions at the site. Between 3700 and 1800 cal yr BP, wet conditions dominate as dry indicating testate amoebae decrease. After 1800 cal yr BP soil conditions become more variable again but this time with dry dominating testate amoebae. In contrast to surrounding regions, there is no evidence of trees such as spruce or larch growing in the surroundings of the site even though those trees are characteristic of many eastern Siberian sites. This difference might be because of the maritime influence of the Okhotsk Sea. Especially in combination with other proxies, the oxygen isotope composition of diatom silica (δ 18 O diatom ) from lake sediments is useful for interpreting past climate conditions. This paper presents the first oxygen isotope data of fossil diatoms from Kamchatka, Russia, derived from sediment cores from Two-Yurts Lake (TYL). For reconstructing Late Holocene climate change, palaeolimnological investigations also included diatom, pollen and chironomid analysis. The most recent diatom sample (δ 18 O diatom = + 23.3‰) corresponds well with the present day isotopic composition of the TYL water (mean δ 18 O = − 14.8‰) displaying a reasonable isotope fractionation in the system silica-water. Nonetheless, the TYL δ 18 O diatom record is mainly controlled by changes in the isotopic composition of the lake water. TYL is considered as a dynamic system triggered by differential environmental changes closely linked with lake-internal hydrological factors. The diatom silica isotope record displays large variations in δ 18 O diatom from + 27.3‰ to + 23.3‰ from about ~ 4.5 kyr BP until today. A continuous depletion in δ 18 O diatom of 4.0‰ is observed in the past 4.5 kyr, which is in good accordance with other hemispheric environmental changes (i.e. a summer insolation-driven Mid- to Late Holocene cooling). The overall cooling trend is superimposed by regional hydrological and atmospheric–oceanic changes. These are related to the interplay between Siberian High and Aleutian Low as well as to the ice dynamics in the Sea of Okhotsk. Additionally, combined δ 18 O diatom and chironomid interpretations provide new information on changes related to meltwater input to lakes. This paper summarizes current knowledge about the postglacial history of the vegetation of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago (CAA) and Greenland. Available pollen data were used to understand the initial migration of taxa across the Arctic, how the plant biodiversity responded to Holocene climate variability, and how past climate variability affected primary production of the vegetation. Current evidence suggests that most of the flora arrived in the area during the Holocene from Europe or refugia south or west of the region immediately after local deglaciation, indicating rapid dispersal of propagules to the region from distant sources. There is some evidence of shrub species arriving later in Greenland, but it is not clear if this is dispersal limited or a response to past climates. Subsequent climate variability had little effect on biodiversity across the CAA, with some evidence of local extinctions in areas of Greenland in the late Holocene. Abstract: Holocene climate records obtained from the Asian summer monsoon domain suggest a regionally-delineated response to changing summer monsoon. The interaction between the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) and the Indian summer monsoon (ISM), two subsystems of the Asian summer monsoon, has been considered as a factor that explains those inconsistent Holocene climate records. However, this assumption is not valid when the relationship between the two subsystems is not clear. This paper presents a literature review regarding climate simulation of the Asian summer monsoon for testing the long-term relationship. The absolutely-dated Holocene speleothem records in the EASM domain and the ISM domain were compared to verify the simulation results. In addition, a unified monsoon index, which has a unified solid dynamic basis and is appropriate for different monsoon regions, was used in order to identify the modern relationship between the two subsystems. The speleothem records show more synchronous than asynchronous on the Holocene millennial-scale monsoon evolution, furthermore the two subsystems respond to the Younger Dryas (YD) and 8.2ka events in a similar way. However, these monsoon simulations roughly suggest that the two subsystems respond to Holocene climate change in different ways. While the simulations were mostly performed in a certain period of the Holocene, the speleothem records provided a relatively continuous Asian summer monsoon history. Therefore, time scales could affect the comparison between simulations and speleothem records. Then, we further discussed the interaction between the Asian monsoon subsystems according to simulations and modern monsoon indices. Overall, the relationship between the two subsystems is more complicated than synchronous or asynchronous, which is a dynamic relationship and related to the atmosphere–land–ocean–vegetation interaction. In addition, the relationship can vary over different time scales, and the links between time scales should be paid more attention to. Besides, the interaction between the westerly winds and the Asian summer monsoon in the mid-latitudes of East Asia will profoundly affect those areas in response to Holocene climate change. It is recommended that further research should be emphasized in dynamic mechanisms between the Asian summer monsoon subsystems and between the Asian monsoon and the westerly winds. The Indonesian throughflow (ITF), as one of the key links of the global thermohaline circulation in the tropics, influences the large-scale redistribution of ocean heat and freshwater between the Pacific and the Indian Oceans. The ITF interacts with the low-salinity South China Sea throughflow (SCSTF) in the Makassar Strait at the pace of El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO). In this paper, variation of the throughflows via the Makassar Strait over the past 12ka is reconstructed according to the seawater δ18Osw differences (indicating salinity gradients), which were determined based on paired measurements of δ18O and magnesium/calcium ratio (Mg/Ca) of Globigerinoides ruber obtained from two sediment cores from the northern and the southern ends of the Makassar Strait respectively. Furthermore, thermal structure variation of the upper water column in the upstream ITF is retrieved on the basis of the temperature difference between the sea surface (G. ruber) and the thermocline (Mg/Ca of Pulleniatina obliquiloculata). It is shown that the surface ITF might have become stronger during the intervals 0.6–1.2, 3–3.6 and 7.2–8ka BP. It also turns out that the SCSTF/ITF system and the upper ocean thermal structure co-vary with each other, and are likely linked with ENSO-like variation of the tropical Pacific. During El Niño-like periods, such as 1.2–3, 3.8–4.6, 5.2–7, and 8–9.6ka BP, the depth of thermocline in the Celebes Sea shoaled and the transport of SCSTF was enhanced, meanwhile the surface warm water transport of the ITF was reduced. Abstract: Understanding late Holocene to present relative sea-level changes at centennial or sub-centennial scales requires geological records that dovetail with the instrumental era. Salt marsh sediments are one of the most reliable geological tide gauges. In this paper we review the methodological and technical advances that promoted research on ‘high resolution’ late Holocene sea-level change. We work through an example to demonstrate different pathways to quantitative reconstructions of relative sea level based on salt marsh sediments. We demonstrate that any reconstruction is in part a result of the environment from which the record is taken, the modern dataset used to calibrate the fossil changes, statistical assumptions behind calibrating microfossil assemblages and choices made by the researchers. With the error term of typical transfer function models ~10–15% of the tidal range, micro-tidal environments should produce the most precise sea-level reconstructions. Sampled elevation range of the modern dataset also has a strong influence on model predictive ability. Model-specific errors may under represent total uncertainty which comes from field practices, sedimentary environment, palaeo-tidal changes and sediment compaction as well as statistical uncertainties. Geological tide gauges require a detailed chronology but we must be certain that apparent relative sea-level fluctuations are not simply a consequence of an age–depth model. Abstract: Last interglacial and Holocene deposits are particularly well developed in the southern parts of Sal Island (Cape Verde Archipelago). They primarily consist of low-elevation (≤2m above sea level [a.s.l.]) marine deposits made of a basal conglomerate embedded in carbonate mud, passing upwards to calcarenites. All deposits contain an abundant fauna with corals, algae and molluscs with Strombus latus Gmelin and accompanying warm water species of the “Senegalese” fauna. Small scale geomorphological mapping with detailed morphosedimentary analysis revealed lateral facies changes and imbricate (offlapping) structures that suggest small-scale oscillations of paleo-sealevels during high sea stand intervals. U-series measurements (in coral fragments) allowed unequivocal identification of Marine Isotope Substage (MIS) 5.5units, but were not precise enough to date the sea level oscillations of the interval. However, geomorphological data and sedimentary facies analysis suggest a double sea level highstand during the peak of the last interglacial. MIS 5.5 age deposits occur at Sal and the Canary Islands at low topographic elevations, between 1 and 2masl. However, these values are lower than the elevations measured for the correlative terraces outcropping at the western tropical Atlantic islands, widely considered to be tectonically stable. Combining the results in this paper with earlier investigations of the “Senegalese” fauna distribution as far north as the Mediterranean basin, it is suggested that the last-interglacial oceanic temperatures in this basin, as well as the temperatures in other islands of the Eastern Atlantic and the coasts of Morocco, were warmer than modern temperatures. Abstract: The reconstruction of paleoenvironmental changes from diatoms in lake sediments is based on the usual assumption that, in each studied sample, the dominant species reflect the environment that prevailed during the time of deposition. If the environment changed significantly during the period of deposition (several years) one can expect a mixture of species having different or contradictory ecological affinities. In this paper we present analyses of diatoms in surface sediment samples collected in the Lake Ossa area (3°50′N, 9°36E) and fossil diatoms from a mid-late Holocene core retrieved in the deepest part of the lake. The Lake Ossa area alternates between a short dry season centered at around the northern winter and a long rainy season during the rest of the year entailing significant changes in water level and pH. Based on multivariate analyses, we will show here that mean annual water depth is the most significant variable explaining the distribution of diatoms in the entire Lake. However, seasonal changes of water level are poorly recorded by diatom assemblages, except in some flat areas on the borders of the lakes where a mixing between species with different affinities to water depth is likely due to seasonal changes in water level. Inferred water depth based on a quantitative transfer function reflected essentially secular to millennial changes in the studied core. The relationship between pH and diatoms is not statistically significant but seasonal to multi-annual pH variations mainly observed in the central parts of the lake are reflected by a mixing of acidophilous and alkaliphilous species. Hierarchical ascending cluster analysis (HAC) considered as the most efficient mean of describing diatom mixing shows that seasonal to multi-annual changes in pH are recorded both in the modern and fossil assemblages. According to the degree of mixing between diatoms with different pH affinities we conclude that short-term pH variability was weaker than today between 5200 and 2700calyrBP, stronger between 2700 and 2000calyrBP, weaker again between 2000 and 600calyrBP and similar to present from 400calyrBP onwards. Short-term changes were thus superimposed on secular to millennium trends recorded by modifications in the abundance of alkaliphilous diatoms. All these changes are interpreted as variations in precipitation according to a previous model showing that pH is strongly controlled by acidic meteoric water. Inferred water depth slightly changed over the last 5500years showing weak variations of precipitation minus evaporation balance at secular to millennial time scales. These results will be used to refine previously published paleoclimatic interpretations, which explained changes in precipitation and P–E balance by modifications in the vertical structure of the atmosphere and subsequently by changes in cloud cover, convective or stratiform. Abstract: The prairie-forest transition in midcontinental North America is a major physiognomic boundary, and its shifts during the Holocene are a classic example of climate-driven ecotonal dynamics. Recent work suggests asymmetrical Holocene behavior, with a relatively rapid early Holocene deforestation and more gradual reforestation later in the Holocene. This paper presents a new synthesis of the Holocene history of the Great Plains prairie-forest ecotone in the north-central US and central Canada that updates prior mapping efforts and systematically assesses rates of change. Changes in percent woody cover (%WC) are inferred from fossil pollen records, using the modern analog technique and surface-sediment pollen samples cross-referenced against remotely sensed observations. For contemporary pollen samples from the Great Plains, %WC linearly correlates to percent arboreal pollen (%AP), but regression parameters vary interregionally. At present, %AP is consistently higher than %WC, because of high background levels of arboreal pollen. Holocene maps of the eastern prairie-forest ecotone agree with prior maps, showing a rapid decrease in %WC and eastward prairie advance between 10,000 and 8000 ka (1 ka=1000 calibrated years before present), a maximum eastward position of the ecotone from 7 to 6 ka, and increased %WC and westward prairie retreat after 6 ka. Ecotone position is ambiguous in Iowa and southeastern Minnesota, due to a scarcity of modern analogs for early-Holocene samples with high Ulmus abundances and for samples from alluvial sediments. The northern prairie-forest ecotone was positioned in central Saskatchewan between 12 and 10 ka, stabilized from 10 to 6 ka despite decreases in %WC at some sites, then moved south after 6 ka. In both east and north, ecotonal movements are consistent with a dry early Holocene and increasing moisture availability after 6 ka. Sites near the ecotone consistently show an asymmetric pattern of abrupt early Holocene deforestation (<300 years) and gradual reforestation after 6 ka. Early Holocene decreases in %WC are faster than the corresponding drops in %AP, because the analog-based %WC reconstructions correct for the high background levels of arboreal pollen types that blur temporal variations in %AP. For example, at Elk Lake, the %AP decline lasts 1000 years, whereas the %WC decline occurs between adjacent pollen samples, approximately 300 years apart. Thus, early Holocene deforestation may have been even more abrupt than previously recognized. Rapid deforestation likely was promoted both by rapid climate changes around 8.2 ka and positive fire-vegetation feedbacks. Non-linear vegetational responses to hydrological variability are consistent with 1) other paleorecords showing rapid die-offs of some eastern tree species in response to aridity and 2) observations of threshold-type ecological responses to recent climate events. The 21st-century trajectory for the Great Plains prairie-forest ecotone is uncertain, because climate models differ over the direction of regional precipitation trends, but future drying would be more likely to trigger threshold-type shifts in ecotone position. Abstract: During the mid-Holocene (6000 yr Before Present, hereafter yr BP) the Chad Basin was occupied by a large endoreic lake, called Lake Mega-Chad. The existence of this lake at that time seems linked to increased monsoonal moisture supply to the Sahel and the Sahara, which in turn was probably ultimately caused by variations in the orbital forcing and higher temperature gradients between ocean and continent. This study provides a synthesis of several works carried out on the Lake Chad Basin and analyses the results of a simulation of the mid-Holocene climate with an Atmosphere General Circulation Model (LMDZ for Laboratoire de Météorologie Dynamique, IPSL Paris), with emphasis on the possible conditions leading to the existence of Lake Mega-Chad. The aim is to define the best diagnostics to understand which mechanisms lead to the existence of the large lake. This paper is the first step of an ongoing work that intends to understand the environmental conditions that this part of Africa experienced during the Upper Miocene (ca. 7 Ma BP), an epoch that was contemporaneous with the first known hominids. Nature, 418(6894): 152–155] and testified by extended lacustrine deposits (diatomites, pelites, various aquatic fauna). Because the mid-Holocene was the last such mega-lake episode, our aim here is to assess the simulated response of Lake Chad to the hydrologic changes caused by 6 kyr BP forcings (orbital variations, albedo, sea surface temperatures) as a test for a future use of the model for studies of the Miocene climate. We show that the induced northward shift of the simulated ITCZ, and the hydrological changes around the lake caused by this shift, are consistent with an increased water balance over the Lake Chad Basin 6000 yr ago. Water supply from the soil (runoff and river inputs) will have to be taken into account in further simulations in order to discuss the timing of the onset, expansion and decay of such a giant water surface in subtropical Africa. Abstract: Documentation of glacier changes is a key element for reconstruction of past climate variability and early detection of global climate change. In this paper, records of Holocene glacier variations in different regions in Norway have been synthesised. During the period from approximately 8000 to 4000 cal. yr BP, most glaciers in Norway were completely melted away at least once due to high summer temperatures and/or reduced winter precipitation. Lichenometrically and historically dated moraines at Jostedalsbreen, in Jotunheimen, at Hardangerjøkulen, and at Folgefonna were used to extend records of glacier length variations back to their maximum position during the ‘Little Ice Age’. The timing of the maximum ‘Little Ice Age’ glacial advance in different parts of southern Norway varied considerably, ranging from the early 18th century to the late 19th century. Cumulative glacier length variations of glaciers in southern Norway show an overall retreat from ∼AD 1750 to the 1930s–40s. Thereafter, most Norwegian glaciers retreated significantly. Short maritime outlet glaciers with a short response time (<10–15 yr) started to advance in the mid-1950s, whereas long outlet glaciers with longer frontal time lag (>15–20 yr) continued their retreat to the 1980s. In the 1990s, however, several of the maritime glaciers started to advance as a response to higher winter accumulation during the first part of the 1990s. Since 2000 most of the observed glaciers have retreated remarkably fast (annual frontal retreat >100 m) mainly due to high summer temperatures. The last glacier inventory in Norway published in 1988 shows that there were 1627 glaciers covering a total area of 2609 km2 with an estimated volume of 164 km3. Modern climate–glacier relationships from mass balance data in Scandinavia have been used to present possible effects on the Norwegian glaciers of climate scenarios between 1961–1990 and 2070–2100 presented by the ‘RegClim’ project. This long-term weather ‘forecast’ for western Norway indicates a rise in the summer temperature of 2.3 °C and an increase in the winter precipitation of 16% by the end of the 21st century. This climate scenario may, if it occurs, cause the equilibrium-line altitude (ELA) to rise 260±50 m. As a result, about 98% of the Norwegian glaciers are likely to disappear and the glacier area may be reduced ∼34% by AD 2100. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: In the present paper, we report on micropaleontological (dinocysts) and isotopic (18O and 13C in foraminifers) analyses performed in Holocene sediments from fifteen cores raised from the central and northwest North Atlantic. Sea-surface temperature (SST), sea-surface salinity (SSS), thus potential density, and sea-ice cover are reconstructed based on dinocyst assemblages. After proper calibration, oxygen isotope data on the mesopelagic foraminifer Neogloboquadrina pachyderma left coiled (Npl) are converted into potential density values deeper in the water column, thus allowing documentation of vertical density gradients and identification of intervals favourable for winter convection to occur with formation of intermediate Labrador Sea Water (LSW). The most important findings from this study include: (1) the existence of an early-mid Holocene thermal optimum with positive anomalies up to 6 °C above present along the main SW–NE axis of the North Atlantic Current, but no significant SST maximum at most sites along eastern Canadian margins; (2) the evidence for larger than present amplitude of annual SSTs during the early Holocene, thus for a stronger seasonality; (3) minimum sea-ice cover from 11500 to 6000 cal years BP, and a slight increase of sea-ice variability, and average seasonal duration of 0.5 to 1 month per year afterwards; (4) variable SSS during the entire Holocene, suggesting changes in the routing and rates of freshwater–meltwater discharges from the Arctic and eastern Canada; (5) the setting of conditions compatible with LSW production after 8 ka only, and likely a more steady production during the late Holocene; (6) an overall trend for a potential density increase of the Labrador Sea, throughout the Holocene, matching a decreasing trend eastward, thus suggesting a progressive enhancement of the western branch of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning with respect to its northeastern route; and (7) indication of maximum production and fast dispersal of LSW in the entire North Atlantic during recent times only, as suggested by linearly-converging δ 18O-values of Npl from all sites, towards its modern relatively homogeneous composition (∼ 2.5/2.6‰). The overall picture of the Holocene North Atlantic arising from this study is that of a basin marked by a strong regionalism with large discrepancies in hydrographical trends and high frequency oscillations, at least partly controlled by freshwater–meltwater routes and rates of export from the Arctic. This paper presents the evidence for Late Pleistocene and Holocene palaeoclimate and glacier fluctuations of the two major icefields in Patagonia, the Hielo Patagónico Norte (47°00′S, 73°39′W) and the Hielo Patagónico Sur (between 48°50′S and 51°30′S). The palaeoenvironmental evidence suggests that glaciers still covered large areas of Patagonia at approximately 14,600 14C years BP. Uniform and rapid warming took place after 13,000 14C years BP, with no unequivocal evidence for climate fluctuations equivalent to those of the Northern Hemisphere Younger Dryas cooling event (the Younger Dryas Chronozone, dated to 11,000–10,000 14C years BP (12,700–11,500 cal. years BP). During the early Holocene (10,000–5000 14C years BP) atmospheric temperatures east of the Andes were about 2 °C above modern values in the period 8500–6500 14C years BP. The period between 6000 and 3600 14C years BP appears to have been colder and wetter than present, followed by an arid phase from 3600 to 3000 14C years BP. From 3000 14C years BP to the present, there is evidence of a cold phase, with relatively high precipitation. West of the Andes, the available evidence points to periods of drier than present conditions between 9400–6300 and 2400–1600 14C years BP. Holocene glacier advances in Patagonia began around 5000 14C years BP, coincident with a strong climatic cooling around this time (the Neoglacial interval). Glacier advances can be assigned to one of three time periods following a ‘Mercer-type’ chronology, or one of four time periods following an ‘Aniya-type’ chronology. The ‘Mercer-type’ chronology has glacier advances 4700–4200 14C years BP; 2700–2000 14C years BP and during the Little Ice Age. The ‘Aniya-type’ chronology has glacier advances at 3600 14C years BP, 2300 14C years BP, 1600–1400 14C years BP and during the Little Ice Age. These chronologies are best regarded as broad regional trends, since there are also dated examples of glacier advances outside these time periods. Possible explanations for the observed patterns of glacier fluctuations in Patagonia include changes related to the internal characteristics of the icefields, changes in the extent of Antarctic sea-ice cover, atmospheric/oceanic coupling-induced climate variability, systematic changes in synoptic conditions and short-term variations in atmospheric temperature and precipitation.
