Abstract: Knowledge of the Little Ice Age (LIA) on the Tibetan Plateau (TP) is of critical importance for understanding the climate changes over the past millennium. However, the data associated with the extents and chronologies of TP LIA moraines are highly dispersed in literature. Lack of systematic integration of these data hampers us to further understand the nature of the LIA, especially from a perspective of whole TP. The paper reviews multiple types of dating on LIA moraines to examine the timing and nature of the LIA on the TP. These include ages of radiocarbon 14C, lichenometry, and cosmogenic radionuclide (CRN), by which we can cross-date the same or morphostratigraphically similar landforms. LIA moraines on the TP are usually present a few hundred to thousand meters beyond the contemporary glaciers. The morphological and stratigraphic evidence indicates multiple periods of glacier advance during the last millennium (LIA). At present, available chronology evidence allows to fully compare the timing of the LIA maximum extents. The glaciers reached and retreated from their LIA maximum extents by an asynchronous pattern between different parts of the TP. The majority of glaciers advanced to their LIA maximum extents at late-14th and early-14th century on the southern and northwestern TP, respectively. The glaciers retreated from their LIA maximum extents during 16th to early-18th, late-14th to early-15th and early-16th century on the southern, northwestern, and northeastern TP, respectively. In addition, the glacier advance period of late-18th to early-19th centuries and retreat period of late-19th century are common on the whole TP. Comparison with ice core records suggests that on the TP, the glacier fluctuations responded more strongly to temperature than to precipitation. By comparison of the LIA chronologies from a global perspective, this paper also concludes that the LIA maximum extents occurred commonly earlier on the TP than in North Atlantic and Southern Hemisphere regions, despite of the variability in the timing of LIA maximum extents on the TP and in the North Atlantic regions. Further, more chronology programs, especially in the central TP, are necessarily needed to improve our understanding of the LIA glacier fluctuations. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Palaeoflood research has developed rapidly since the 1970s as the value of assembling long flood histories has become more widely appreciated across the Earth and environmental sciences, and in river basin management and related policy formulation. Palaeoflood science links several disciplines and involves a wide range of field-based, theoretical, and modelling approaches. Increasingly, researchers are using palaeoflood data to explore linkages between various components of global change and the past dynamics of river systems. Pleistocene and Holocene flood records are now providing essential context for the short gauged records that are commonly used for flood hazard assessment and river basin management. Recent advances in palaeoflood science were presented at the 4th International Palaeoflood Workshop in Crete in June 2007. This paper reviews the background to this meeting, sets out the structure and key themes of this special issue, and outlines potential future research directions. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The Global climate reorganisation in the late Pliocene linked to enhancement of the Atlantic Ocean Thermohaline Circulation (AOTC), instigated a transition to glacial-interglacial cyclicity in the Quaternary. Enhancement of the AOTC amplified atmospheric precipitation over the Eurasian interior strengthening Northern Hemisphere Glaciation. Increased rainfall on the vast Russian Plain drained into the endorheic Caspian Sea, which makes the Caspian geological record highly potential for tracing atmospheric precipitation changes. Two major palaeohydrological events in the Caspian Sea, the Akchagylian transgression and the Akchagylian marine incursion, led to a five-fold enlargement of the Caspian Sea surface area and transformed the basin palaeoecology, enabling active interregional faunal dispersals. The Akchagylian Stage still lacks an unequivocal age model with two age constraints – the "long Akchagylian" (3.6–1.8 Ma) and the "short Akchagylian" (2.7–2.1 Ma) standing on magnetostratigraphic studies of geological records in Turkmenistan and the Kura Basin, respectively. The age discrepancies also exist within the Kura Basin, where the fossil mammal-bearing Kvabebi locality with Akchagylian marine fauna was magnetostratigraphically dated at 3.2 Ma. In this paper, we try to resolve the age contradictions for the Akchagylian Stage. We revisit the Kvabebi (Georgia) and Kushkuna (Azerbaijan) sections of the western Kura Basin and provide new magnetostratigraphic and 40Ar/39Ar age constraints on these marginal Akchagylian deposits. Moreover, we revise the magnetostratigraphy of 25 geological records from Turkmenistan and the Kura Basin and propose a new unified age model for the Akchagylian Stage: 1. Intrabasinal Akchagylian freshwater-mesohaline transgression at 2.95 ± 0.02 Ma; 2. Akchagylian marine incursion through establishment of a Caspian-Arctic connection (2.75–2.45 Ma); 3. Akchagylian–Apsheronian boundary highlighting a Caspian-Black Sea connection at 2.13 Ma. The sudden expansion of the Caspian Sea at 2.95 ± 0.02 Ma potentially correlates to the interglacial intensification of the AOTC between 2.95 and 2.82 Ma. The new ages constrain a much shorter (2.95–2.1 Ma) Akchagylian than in previously mentioned regional geological time scales (3.6–1.8 Ma) and strongly appeal to reconsider the ages of numerous archaeological and mammalian sites in the Caspian region. • Akchagylian transgression at ~2.95 Ma led to a five-fold expansion of the Caspian Sea. • The Caspian Sea level rose due to the switch to a positive water budget. • The Caspian Sea rise correlates with enhanced Atlantic Ocean Thermohaline Circulation. • Interregional correlation of the Akchagylian transgression to the upper Gauss chron. • New integrated age model places Akchagylian between 2.95 Ma and 2.13 Ma.
