Through the Earth's ∼ 4.54 billion year history, icehouse climates have been relatively short-lived but have exerted a significant impact on the evolution of the habitable environment. These icehouse episodes, such as those that occurred in the Cryogenian, mid-Ediacaran, Late Ordovician, and Late Paleozoic, developed through the complex interaction of Earth System processes; however, there is still ongoing debate regarding the causes, processes, and consequences of these glaciations. To improve our understanding of the past history of icehouse climates and the responses of the Earth System, we present this new special issue entitled The Earth System during Icehouse Climate Modes: Contributions from Glacial Records in China. This special issue includes eighteen papers that focus on four major icehouse events: the Cryogenian Snowball Earth glaciations (Sturtian and Marinoan global glaciations), the Ediacaran glaciation, the Ordovician glaciation, and the late Paleozoic Ice Age. This collection of papers provide novel insights into glacial processes, marine environments, and chemical weathering through key intervals of Earth History. In recent years, studies have found that drought can occur rapidly under anomalous atmospheric circulation patterns and underlying surface conditions. This type of drought is defined as "flash drought". It is more sensitive to global warming compared to traditional drought and may become a common drought phenomenon in the future and require intensive research. But the characteristics and development mechanism of flash drought in northern China has been studied much less than in southern China, and thus deserve further study. Based on the daily station data and GLDAS grid data from 1978 to 2020, this paper identified the flash drought in northern China, analyzed its evolution of temporal-spatial characteristics and explored the meteorological driving factors of flash drought. The main results are as follows: (1)The frequency of flash drought in the year is the highest in WNW (West of Northwest), followed by ENW (East of Northwest), NC (North China) and NE (Northeast China), while the frequency in the plant growing season is the highest in the south of NE and the south of NC, and low in the other regions. (2)The hotspot areas of flash drought showed an obvious eastward trend from WNW to ENW in northern China from the 1980s to 2010s. (3) There is a good relationship between soil moisture and precipitation in WNW and ENW, while the soil moisture is affected by both temperature and precipitation in NC and NE. (4) Flash drought could occur all through the year in WNW and NC, while it mainly occurred in the summer half-year and summer in EWN and NE. The main high occurrence period of flash drought in each region is in late spring and early summer, while a second high occurrence period appears from early September to late October in WNW. (5) From the perspective of the driving of water vapor changes, the flash drought in WNW and ENW is mainly driven by water vapor advection, while that in NC and NE is mainly driven by wind field divergence. • The hotspot areas of flash drought showed an obvious eastward movement from WNW to ENW in northern China. • The main high occurrence period is around early May to early July in northern China, with a second one in WNW. • Flash drought in WNW and ENW (NC and NE) is mainly driven by water vapor advection (wind field divergence). Abstract: Knowledge of the Little Ice Age (LIA) on the Tibetan Plateau (TP) is of critical importance for understanding the climate changes over the past millennium. However, the data associated with the extents and chronologies of TP LIA moraines are highly dispersed in literature. Lack of systematic integration of these data hampers us to further understand the nature of the LIA, especially from a perspective of whole TP. The paper reviews multiple types of dating on LIA moraines to examine the timing and nature of the LIA on the TP. These include ages of radiocarbon 14C, lichenometry, and cosmogenic radionuclide (CRN), by which we can cross-date the same or morphostratigraphically similar landforms. LIA moraines on the TP are usually present a few hundred to thousand meters beyond the contemporary glaciers. The morphological and stratigraphic evidence indicates multiple periods of glacier advance during the last millennium (LIA). At present, available chronology evidence allows to fully compare the timing of the LIA maximum extents. The glaciers reached and retreated from their LIA maximum extents by an asynchronous pattern between different parts of the TP. The majority of glaciers advanced to their LIA maximum extents at late-14th and early-14th century on the southern and northwestern TP, respectively. The glaciers retreated from their LIA maximum extents during 16th to early-18th, late-14th to early-15th and early-16th century on the southern, northwestern, and northeastern TP, respectively. In addition, the glacier advance period of late-18th to early-19th centuries and retreat period of late-19th century are common on the whole TP. Comparison with ice core records suggests that on the TP, the glacier fluctuations responded more strongly to temperature than to precipitation. By comparison of the LIA chronologies from a global perspective, this paper also concludes that the LIA maximum extents occurred commonly earlier on the TP than in North Atlantic and Southern Hemisphere regions, despite of the variability in the timing of LIA maximum extents on the TP and in the North Atlantic regions. Further, more chronology programs, especially in the central TP, are necessarily needed to improve our understanding of the LIA glacier fluctuations. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Since two decades ago, when China''s economic strength has made this most populated country as a leading global agricultural outsourcer, there have increasingly been hot debates on whether such outsourcing is destructive or constructive, especially for host countries. Some critics pessimistically call it ‘land grabs’ or ‘neo-colonialism’ that should be prevented while others optimistically appreciate it as a development opportunity that should be promoted. The first group interprets the outsourcing as a win–loss process while the second considers it as a win–win deal. This study tries to show the possible gains and losses of both outsourcers and host countries. Accordingly, this paper introduces four different situations; i.e. loss–loss; win–loss; loss–win; and win–win. The first situation is understood as a ‘red-deal’ which should urgently be stopped. The second and third situations are called ‘yellow-deal’ which should be adjusted to come up with the last situation which we call ‘green-deal’ that addresses the benefits of both outsourcers and outsourcees. The paper concludes that in order to understand the main impacts of such deals, we still need to create more evidence for each situation in the framework of a series of risk assessment studies on the bases of both “country-case” and “crop-case”. The Qinling Mountains (QLM) form the climatic boundary between the temperate north and subtropical south of China. Many important Paleolithic archaeological sites located on fluvial terraces in this area have been reported in recent decades. Abundant artifacts have been excavated in silt layers overlying fluvial gravels and coarse sands. These silt layers have thus far been interpreted as aeolian deposits. However, in principle they could also represent (in part) fluvial (floodplain) deposits, especially near the base of fine-grained sequences. Reconstruction of fluvial terrace formation is crucial for the correct interpretation of the environment of hominin occupation. In this paper, two sediment sequences from two Paleolithic sites, located on different terrace levels of the Hanjiang River in the Hanzhong basin, are studied mainly using grain-size and grain-shape analyses. In addition, grain-size distributions have been unraveled by applying end-member modelling to distinguish different sedimentary environments. The results show that three different units can be discriminated in each section. The lower unit, consisting of gravelly sand mixed with fine silt, is interpreted as shallow-channel-fill sediment deposited during the start of the transition from a channel to a floodplain environment. The middle unit comprises a fine-grained, gradually fining-upward sequence, representative a floodplain environment. At its base, it reflects a high-energy floodplain situation; at its top, the sequence is interpreted as a low-energy floodplain environment with aeolian input (settling in static water). The third, uppermost unit consists of aeolian loess interbedded with paleosol(s) and sediments that are interpreted as the results of episodic surface runoff. The gradual transition between the 3 units and the gradual fining upward trend of the middle unit indicates that there is no considerable age gap (no hiatus) between the fluvial- and aeolian sedimentary environments. Stone artifacts have been found in all 3 units, with difference abundance, indicating that both the aeolian and floodplain depositional environments provided favorable living conditions. For the floodplain environment, the resources of water and raw materials (fluvial gravels) for tool making may have offered fundamental resources for hominin settlement. • The depositional environments of the artifact-bearing sediment have been determined. • Both aeolian dust deposit on terrace surface and floodplain environment were occupied by hominins in central China. • The transition from fluvial to aeolian sedimentary environment during incision is gradual. • Combined grain size and grain shape analysis allows for the distinction of aeolian and fluvial sedimentary environments. Abstract Vegetation-atmosphere interaction is thought to have significant impacts on modulating regional climate. The main purpose of this paper is to reveal the impact of vegetation change on regional climate simulation over Eastern China. Therefore, we have performed three 30-year simulations from 1982 to 2011 with the WRF model coupled with the Noah land surface model as follows: a control experiment with climatology green vegetation fraction (GVF) (CTL), a sensitive experiment with WRF default climatology GVF (CLMV), and a sensitive experiment with dynamic vegetation (DYNV). The climatology difference between the CTL and CLMV experiment points out that during 1982–2011 over Eastern China, the increase of vegetation causes the decrease of temperature; on the other hand, the increase of temperature often corresponds to the reduction of vegetation. In the meantime, the increase/decrease in GVF is quite consistent with the simulated increase/decrease in precipitation, which is caused by both circulations and water vapor distributions at lower levels. The difference in the temperature trend between the CTL and DYNV experiment is almost opposite to that between the DYNV and GVF trend, which means that the decreased/increased vegetation will increase/decrease the surface air temperature. However, the trend of precipitation variation shows no clear relation with that of GVF. In response to GVF change, the results show that in the vegetation-climate feedback the moisture feedback is dominant over the radiation and momentum feedback. Significant decrease in GVF and LAI is detected across the East China, which leads to the decrease in the latent heat flux and increase in the sensible heat flux. For extremes and heat waves, it is shown that DYNV leads to better stimulation on the maximum of daily maximum temperature (TXx), warm spell days (WSDI), heat wave days (HWNY) and the averaged heat wave duration (HWDU) than CTL does over most of the Southeast China, although it may introduce some new biases in the Eastern coastal regions as well as the Northeastern China. Abstract: To address severe grassland degradation problems, China has been implementing a number of national restoration programs, whose significant environmental effect has attracted the attention of many researchers. In this paper, land use and cover change (LUCC) in the Inner Mongolia grassland and the consequent change in net primary productivity (NPP) were studied by combining the land use data of the study area for 2001 and 2009 derived from the MODIS global land cover product and the CASA (Carnegie–Ames–Stanford Approach) model driven with MODIS-NDVI data. The results indicate that the area of Inner Mongolia grassland had a net increase of 77,993km2 during the study period, which was mainly attributed to the conversion from desert and cropland. The total NPP of Inner Mongolia grassland increased by 29,432.71GgCyr−1 during 2001–2009, of which the human activities and climate change were responsible for 80.23% and 19.77%, respectively. Land conversion and improved management increased grassland NPP directly, and the ecological restoration conducted by large-scale conservation programs could be the intrinsic driving force for this change. Abstract: Previous studies show that the area of a moraine-dammed lake can provide a good indicator of the significance of its outburst. For a glacier-dammed lake however, because its area and depth fluctuates with the melting of its ice dam, it is difficult to predict the outburst of the glacier‐dammed lake by using its area alone. A characteristic of the surface of Lake Merzbacher is a large amount of floating ice therefore, a method is proposed in this article to extract the area of floating ice on the lake and the area of ice free water in the lake by using Environment and Disaster Monitoring Small Satellite images respectively. Furthermore, based on the area of floating ice extracted through the image information of Lake Merzbacher in 2009 and 2010, we determined the relationship between the ice area and the outburst of the lake, then formulated the Index for hazard of Glacier Lake Outburst Flood (IGLOF) of Lake Merzbacher, which cannot only predict the flood outburst, but also determine the specific outburst period after the lake drainage had occurred. This can be shown in a recalculation of the lake drainages in the years 2009 and 2010. Research results indicate that when IGLOF is less than 0.5 and the lake area is larger than 3km2, the outburst process is in early-warning period and GLOF will occur in the next 5–8days. Also, the successful outburst prediction of Lake Merzbacher in 2011 showed that the index described in this paper provides a quick methodology for forecasting and warning against Lake Merzbacher outburst floods. However，as our research was based on a short observation period (2009-2011) and also cannot be supplemented by other images, it will still be needed to be checked and validated by continuous observation and improvement in future. Abstract: Efforts to control aeolian desertification in China have focused on the arid and semiarid regions. However, the direct dust emission rates, sediment characteristics and local-scale controls, as well as the measures needed to combat desertification, remain poorly understood in northwest Shanxi Province. Aeolian desertification is regarded as an obstacle to local sustainable socioeconomic development. This paper investigated changes in aeolian desertification between 1975 and 2010 on the northwestern Shanxi Plateau. In this study, remote sensing images were used to classify land suffering from aeolian desertification into four categories: light, moderate, severe, and extremely severe. To evaluate the evolution and status of aeolian desertification as well as its causes, we interpreted and analyzed Landsat multi-spectral scanner (MSS) image (acquired in 1975) and Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) images (acquired in 1991, 2000, 2006, and 2010) as well as meteorological and socioeconomic data. Results revealed 11,866km2, 13,362km2, 14,051km2, 13,613km2, and 12,318km2 of aeolian desertified land (ADL) in the above 5 periods, respectively. The spatial dynamics and patterns showed two stages: expansion during 1975–2000 at a rate of 87.37km2 a−1, and spatial transfer of affected areas during 2000–2010 with a net decrease of 173.27km2 a−1. During the evolution of aeolian desertification, areas of moderate ADL had the greatest dynamic response (11.45%). The factors controlling ADL dynamics were analyzed from the perspectives of two groups of factors: natural factors and human activities. Our results indicated that the climate-dominated natural factors contribute greatly to the occurrence and development of ADL. However, they are not the fundamental causes of its development. The human factors are the primary and direct driving forces responsible for the increase in ADL area. More thorough quantitative analysis, with more frequent remotely sensed data is needed to assess the driving forces in more detail. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: This paper assesses the impact of climate change on China''s agricultural production at a cross-provincial level using the Ricardian approach, incorporating a multilevel model with farm-level group data. The farm-level group data includes 13,379 farm households, across 316 villages, distributed in 31 provinces. The empirical results show that, firstly, the marginal effects and elasticities of net crop revenue per hectare with respect to climate factors indicated that the annual impact of temperature on net crop revenue per hectare was positive, and the effect of increased precipitation was negative when looking at the national totals; secondly, the total impact of simulated climate change scenarios on net crop revenues per hectare at a Chinese national total level, was an increase of between 79 USD per hectare and 207 USD per hectare for the 2050s, and an increase from 140 USD per hectare to 355 USD per hectare for the 2080s. As a result, climate change may create a potential advantage for the development of Chinese agriculture, rather than a risk, especially for agriculture in the provinces of the Northeast, Northwest and North regions. However, the increased precipitation can lead to a loss of net crop revenue per hectare, especially for the provinces of the Southwest, Northwest, North and Northeast regions. Abstract: Reservoir sedimentation has been a serious problem for reservoir operation and watershed management worldwide, which highlights the importance of accurate estimate of the deposited sediment amount. With reservoir information derived from remote sensing dataset and observed hydrological records of water and sediment, this paper is concerned with the cumulative reservoir sediment trapping in the Yellow River basin. The river basin was divided into 12 sub-basins, upon which the reservoirs'' sediment trapping efficiency (TE) and their interception effects on inflowing sediment were estimated with sediment records extracted from 179 field sampling stations. The results show that, with the sediment TE greater than 80% for all the sub-basins, theoretically the basin-wide reservoirs are able to trap most sediment. For the whole river basin, the sediment TE averages 95.2%, which indicates that the reservoirs can collectively make a significant anthropogenic signature on basin-wide sediment delivery. A basin-wide sediment yield map was generated to estimate the reservoir sedimentation amount. During 1950–1970, annually about 2.483Gt of sediment was transported into channels from sloping lands. Taking into account the actual water storage changes and the reservoir construction history, the actual reservoir sedimentation rate was estimated at 0.59Gt/yr after corrections, which represents 47.6% of the river basin''s total sediment load reduction. Globally, reservoir sedimentation in the Yellow River basin represents about 12–15% of the global mean rate. Up to 2010, approximately 19.32Gt of sediment has been trapped by Yellow River reservoirs, and totally about 40.32Gt of sediment has been artificially fixed if silt check dams are also considered. With huge amounts of sediment deposited, these reservoirs have been losing their storage capacity to sedimentation at a rate of 0.6% per year. The magnitude is expected to enhance in future following new reservoir completions. Thus, more efforts are strongly needed to explore the associated responses. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Aeolian sandy land in the Yarlung Zangbo River basin has attracted the attention of many researchers. However, its dynamics as well as its relevance to various factors has rarely been reported with integrated studies. In this paper, spatio-temporal dynamics of the aeolian sandy land in the basin was studied by interpreting Landsat images acquired from 1975, 1990, 2000, and 2008 with the help of geographic information system (GIS) technology. Spatially, the results showed a decreasing trend from west to east, which is from the Maquanhe wide valley in the headwater area to the middle and lower reaches of the river basin. Temporally, aeolian sandy lands in the basin showed a slow increasing trend, with an increase of 10.5% during the 1975–2008 period, spreading most quickly during the period of 1990–1999. The factors related to dynamics of aeolian sandy land were analyzed from the perspectives of two driving factors, climate changes and human activities. The climate-dominated natural factors are the internal driving forces for the development of aeolian sandy lands, and the human factors are the external driving forces responsible for the increase of the aeolian sandy land area. Abstract: Water discharge and sediment load have changed continuously during the last half century in the Yellow River basin, China. In the present paper, data from 7 river gauging stations and 175 meteorological stations are analyzed in order to estimate quantitatively the contributions of human activities and climate change to hydrological response. Coefficients of water discharge (C w ) and sediment load (C s ) are calculated for the baseline period of 1950s–1960s according to the correlations between the respective hydrological series and regional precipitation. Consequently, the natural water discharge and natural sediment load time series are reconstructed from 1960s–2008. Inter-annual impacts are then separated from the impacts of human activities and climate change on the hydrological response of different regions of the Yellow River basin. It is found that human activities have the greatest influence on changes to the hydrological series of water discharge and sediment load, no matter whether the effect is negative or positive. Moreover, the impact of human activities is considerably greater on water discharge than sediment load. During 1970–2008, climate change and human activities respectively contribute 17% and 83% to the reduction in water discharge, and 14% and 86% to the reduction in sediment yield in the Upper reaches of Yellow River basin; The corresponding relative contributions in the Middle reaches are 71% and 29% to reductions in water discharge, and 48% and 52% to reductions in sediment load. Moreover, it is observed that the impacts of human activities on the whole basin are enhanced with time. In the 2000s, the impact of human activities exceeds that of climate change in the 2000s, with human activities directly responsible for 55% and 54% of the reductions in water discharge and sediment load in the whole basin. Abstract: In this paper, we report 3780-m-thick Neogene deposits accumulated in the Kuqa foreland basin of southern Tianshan range, providing great potential for studying both tectonics and paleoclimatic changes. Based on palynological evidence, we discuss the paleoenvironmental changes as well as the interplay between regional uplift and climatic change in the region studied. Our results indicate that the vegetation and climatic changes from 13.3 to 7Ma were response to global climatic changes. After 7Ma, the uplift of the southern Tianshan range partially affects vegetation and climatic changes. Both global cooling and the rainshadow effect of uplifted high mountains affect the enhanced arid climate initiated ca. 5.23Ma ago. Abstract: This paper documents a new Permian–Triassic carbonate sequence which recorded the end-Permian mass extinction in the isolated oceanic setting of Neotethys in southwestern Tibet, China. The sequence is over 350m thick and consists of the Gyanyima and the Lower Lanchengquxia formations in ascending order. The Lopingian (Late Permian) Gyanyima Formation is composed of fossiliferous reddish carbonates dominated by Colaniella grainstone and reef facies including fenestrate/sponge/coral framestone and bafflestone. 156 species are recognized from the Lopingian Gyanyima Formation. Composite ranges of brachiopods, ostracods, rugose corals and foraminifers at the Gyanyima Section suggest that evolution and diversification of Permian marine organisms continued to the end-Permian preceding a major faunal extinction close to the Permian–Triassic boundary (PTB), coincident with a 2–3‰ negative shift of δ 13Ccarb. The timing and accelerating extinction pattern and the negative δ 13Ccarb excursion are largely comparable with those reported from many previously-documented sections on continental shelf environments. Based on a detailed lithofacies analysis, the latest Permian reefal facies is sharply replaced by ostracod/crinoid packstone/grainstone with abrupt abundant occurrences of Early Triassic conodonts at the Gyanyima Section. This is then followed by thrombolitic microbialite, stromatolite, packstone containing abundant spherical microbes, and bivalve/ammonoid packstone of tidal and intertidal facies. This distinct lithofacies and biofacies shift would, therefore, suggest a dramatic faunal community and environmental change across the PTB. Distinct palaeoclimate fluctuations through the P–T interval are also indicated by the alternation of warm- and cool-water faunas through the uppermost part of the succession. The lower part of the Gyanyima Formation is characterized by a warm condition as indicated by Cathaysian-dominated fossils. This was then followed by a mild cooling event as suggested by the occurrence of many distinct peri-Gondwanan elements and absence of compound corals. The latest Changhsingian is characterized exclusively by warm-water faunal elements of Cathaysian affinities, together with the negative shift of δ 13Ccarb, suggesting a rapid warming event at the very end of Permian in association with much more widespread volcanic activities than we thought before. Abstract: This paper analyzes change trend of farmland food production, grassland food provision, marine and inland aquatic products, and imports and exports in terms of calorie, protein and fat under consideration of Grain-for-Green program and urbanization. The analysis shows that annual mean production of farmland in the first period from the year of 1985 to 1995 was calorie of 1,179,629,173million kcal, protein of 35,720million kg and fat of 11,752million kg on an average. In the second period from 1995 to 2005, farmland provision was 1,389,489,929million kcal, 42,880million kg of protein and 16,694million kg of fat. Calorie production increased by 209,860,756million kcal, protein by 7160million kg, and fat by 4943million kg annually. Annual grassland provision was 318,964.1million kg of dry biomass during the period from 1982 to 1992 and decreased by 3159.3million kg during the period from 1992 to 2002 on an average. Total aquatic production, including marine and inland aquatic products, has a considerable increasing trend since 1998 and reached to 49,017.17million kg in 2004. Net imports, imports subtracting from exports, became bigger than zero greatly since 1995 and net imports of calorie increased to 121,460,766million kcal, protein 7546million kg and fat 5880million kg in 2004. China supplied calorie for 1917 million persons, protein for 2193 million persons and fat for 1111 million persons under primary well-to-do life in 2004. China had a great problem of fat shortage. If foods on the first trophic level such as grain, beans and oil-crops were appropriately converted into foods on the second trophic level such as meats, China would find a solution for fat shortage problem and could supply food for 1534 million persons, 1500 million persons and 1411 million persons under primary well-to-do life, full well-to-do life and well-off life respectively in 2004 in terms of a model for balancing nutrients. Abstract: This paper is concerned with identifying the spatial and temporal patterns in the annual maximum and minimum water level in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region. The Mann–Kendall test and Pettitt test are used to detect trends and abrupt change points, and the Trend Free Pre-Whitening (TFPW) approach then eliminates the effect of serial correlation in data series with significant autocorrelation. Approximately fifty years of the annual hydrological variables from 18 stations in the three major rivers (the West River, the North River, and the East River) are examined. The changing trends of the extremes in water level show different features in different parts of the PRD region. Generally speaking, in the upper part of the delta, the water levels show a decreasing trend while in the middle and lower part there is an increasing trend. This spatial pattern of the extreme water level variation is unlikely to be due to a long-term change in stream flow in the PRD region because the water level changes do not always coincide with the extreme stream flow variations. Sand excavation initiated in the 1980s and continuing for more than 20years in almost all tributaries around the PRD region is one of the most serious intensive human activities affecting water levels. The result of the Pettitt test indicates that most abrupt change points occurred in 1980s–1990s, which reveals that sand excavation and channel regulation are likely to have been the most significant factors contributing to the change over this period. These anthropogenic activities modify the annual extreme water level dramatically in a way that affects the morphology of river channels and estuaries of the PRD and also the redistribution of discharge. However, there are differences in the geographic locations of significant trends for the water level investigated, which implies that these impacts are not spatially uniform. The end-Permian mass extinction (EPME) severely impacted global biodiversity. Extinction selectivity of biotas behaved differently in various environmental settings, and biotic variations before, during, and after the EPME on the shallow platform remain unclear. This paper describes a new microbialite near the Permian-Triassic (P-Tr) boundary (PTB) from the Xiejiacao section, South China. The PTB microbialite comprises thrombolite and dendrolite fabrics and yields abundant columnar cyanobacteria and various microspheroids. Abundant metazoan fossils, including conodonts, foraminifers, ostracods, gastropods, ammonoids, brachiopods, and ophiuroids, are reported from the uppermost Permian bioclastic limestone, PTB microbialite (PTBM), and lowest Triassic strata in Xiejiacao. Stratigraphic occurrences of these taxa display a two-fold decline pattern of the end-Permian mass extinction, calibrating to the base and top of the PTB microbialite and corresponding to the first extinction phase (EP1) and second extinction phase (EP2) of the EPME, respectively. This two-fold extinction pattern is also reinforced by fossil fragment components of various clades through the P-Tr transition in Xiejiacao. Updated dataset of metazoan fossil records from 25 PTBM sections in South China is also compiled, and it shows the two-fold declines in biodiversity. The dominance role of foraminifers in the latest Permian faunas switched to ostracods in the PTB microbialite after EP1, and then to bivalves after EP2. Proportions of infaunal, stationary, and omnivore forms declined continuously across the EP1 and EP2, while pelagic, fast-moving, suspension-feeding, and predatory taxa underwent stepwise increases across these two extinctions. Proportions of epifaunal, slow-moving, and deposit-feeding taxa increased after EP1 but decreased after EP2. This might be associated with the extinction of brachiopods and, the immigration, and the proliferation of mollusks (bivalves, gastropods, and ammonoids). The metazoan fossil dataset of all PTBM sections across South China refutes the taphonomic window hypothesis and the refuge scenario, instead, supports that the post-extinction unique palaeoceanographic conditions in microbial ecosystems may have been beneficial to diversification of the PTBM faunas. Abstract: This paper provides an overview of the current status of the cryosphere in China and its changes. Up-to-date statistics of the cryosphere in China are summarized based on the latest available data. There are 46,377 glaciers in China, covering an area of 59,425 km2. The glacier ice reserve is estimated to be about 5600 km3 and the annual glacier runoff is about 61.6×109 m3. The continuous snow cover extent (>60 days) in China is about 3.4×106 km2 and the maximum water equivalent is 95.9×109 m3 yr−1. The permafrost area in China is about 1.72×106 km2. The total ground ice reserve on the Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau is estimated to be about 10,923 km3. Recent investigations indicated that glacier areas in China have shrunk about 2–10% over the past 45 yr. Total glacier area has receded by about 5.5%. Snow mass has increased slightly. Permafrost is clearly degrading, as indicated by shrinking areas of permafrost, increasing depth of the active layer, rising of lower limit of permafrost, and thinning of the seasonal frost depth. Some models predict that glacier area shrinkage could be as high as 26.7% in 2050, with glacier runoff increasing until its maximum in about 2030. Although snow mass shows an increasing trend in western China, in eastern China the trend is toward decreasing snow mass, with increasing interannual fluctuations. Permafrost degradation is likely to continue, with one-third to one-half of the permafrost on the Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau anticipated to degrade by 2100. Abstract: Knowledge about changes of regional carbon density during late Quaternary is of great significance for understanding regional and global carbon cycles. Taking the Hunshandake Sandy Land, located in eastern Inner Mongolia of China as an example, this paper aims to reconstruct Late Quaternary environmental changes, and then to discuss the fluctuations of organic carbon density and storage in the desert environment of northern China. The study area with a mean annual precipitation ca. 300 mm is characterized by the occurrence of fixed and semi-fixed sand dunes reaching a maximal height of 30 m. The research methods included field observations, examinations of grain sizes, as well as carbon and calcium carbonate contents of the sediment samples. The chronology is based on Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) dating and radiocarbon analyses. This work reveals that the organic carbon density in the surface layer of the Hunshandake Sandy Land changed between at least 2500 g/m2 during the Holocene Climatic Optimum and 1500 g/m2 when aeolian processes dominate. The dune construction was restricted by periglacial processes during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). The Holocene Climatic Optimum, indicated by extensive formation of kastanozem soils, occurred between 5 ka and 3 ka in the study area. Although desertification might cause a 40% loss of total organic carbon storage within several dozen of years in the study area, a considerable amount of this carbon was re-deposited in the regions of downwind directions. Abstract: A method for surface modeling of land cover change (SMLC) is developed on the basis of establishing transition probability matrixes between land cover types and HLZ types. SMLC is used to simulate land cover scenarios of China for the years 2039, 2069 and 2099, for which HLZ scenarios are first simulated in terms of HadCM3 climatic scenarios that are downscaled in zonal model of spatial climate change in China. This paper also analyzes spatial distribution of land cover types, area change and mean center shift of each land cover type, ecotope diversity, and patch connectivity under the land cover scenarios. The results show that cultivated land would decrease and woodland would expand greatly with climatic change, which coincides with consequences expected by implementation of Grain-for-Green policy. Nival area would shrink, and desertification area would expand at a comparatively slow rate in future 100 years. Climate change would generally cause less ecotope diversity and more patch connectivity. Ecosystems in China would have a pattern of beneficial cycle after efficient ecological conservation and restoration. However, if human activities would exceed regulation capacity of ecosystems themselves, the ecosystems in China might deteriorate more seriously. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

This paper presents an updated Taxa-PFTs-Biome scheme, based on 18 biomes, 30 Plant Functional Types (PFTs) and 590 pollen taxa from 1630 surface pollen sites in China. The biomization results reveal a total of 16 biome types comprising eight new biomes. By comparing the simulated biome types with modern potential vegetation, 80% of the sampling sites were correctly assigned, which is considerably more accurate than studies which have used previous Chinese biomization schemes. The biome reconstruction for the mid-Holocene (6 ± 0.5 14C kyr B.P.) shows that: (1) In eastern China, tropical, subtropical, warm-temperate and cool-temperate forests did not significantly expand northward, whilst cold-temperate forests were absent from northeastern China; and (2) in central China, the western boundary of steppe vegetation was shifted westwards due to a ~150–300 km extension of the forest and forest-steppe biomes, which is close to the present-day 200–300 mm isohyet. The northwestward shift of the forest and forest-steppe in central China during the mid-Holocene indicates that moisture levels were enhanced compared to the present day. The climatic mechanism responsible was likely a strengthened East Asian summer monsoon, which resulted in increased moisture transport from the ocean to the semiarid regions in northern China, promoting the development of forest and forest-steppe vegetation. • An updated taxa-PFTs-Biome scheme, based on 1630 surface pollen sites in China, was established. • The average accuracy of the updated scheme is more than 80%, which higher than previous Chinese schemes. • The boundary of the forest-steppe zone during mid-Holocene generally advanced northwestwards by about 200-300 km. Near-surface temperature records show that China warmed by about 0.8 °C from 1950 to 2010. However, there exists an ongoing debate about whether this warming might have been partially due to urbanization bias. In fact, homogenization approaches may be inefficient in densely populated provinces that have experienced a significant urban development since the 1940s. This paper aims to complement previous research on the topic by showing that an alternative approach based on the analysis of the divergence between the minimum (Tmin) and maximum (Tmax) near-surface temperature records since the 1940s could be useful to clarify the issue because urban heat island (UHI) effects stress the warming of nocturnal temperatures more than the diurnal ones. Then, the significance of the divergence observed in the data could be evaluated against the expectations produced by the CMIP5 general circulation model simulations. From 1945–1954 to 2005–2014, on average and over China, these models predict that Tmin had to warm 0.19 ± 0.06 °C more than Tmax. However, during the same period, the climatic records show that Tmin warmed 0.83 ± 0.15 °C more than Tmax. A similar analysis demonstrates that the effect is more pronounced during the colder months from November–April than during the warmer ones from May to October. A comparison versus China urbanization records demonstrates that the regions characterized by a large Tmin-Tmax divergence are also the most densely populated ones, such as north-east China, that have experienced a diffused and fast urbanization since the 1940s. The results are significant and may indicate the presence of a substantial uncorrected urbanization bias in the Chinese climate records. Under the hypothesis that Tmax is a better metric for studying climatic changes than Tmean or Tmin, we conclude that about 50% of the recorded warming of China since the 1940s could be due to uncorrected urbanization bias. In addition, we also find that the Tmax record from May to October over China shows the 1940s and the 2000s equally warm, in contrast to the 1 °C warming predicted by the CMIP5 models. • Mean surface temperature in China has warmed by 0.8 °C since 1950. • Atmospheric boundary layer physics predicts higher UHI warming during night. • The divergence between Tmin and Tmax is used to detect urbanization biases. • The China regions with the strongest Tmin-Tmax divergence are also the most populated. • Thus, the temperature warming in China is partially due to UHI biases. Ichnological studies are exceptionally important for reconstruction of ecosystems in the aftermath of mass extinctions, but they have only rarely been undertaken from strata deposited in continental settings during the Permian–Triassic transition. This paper systematically documents seventeen ichnogenera and three ichno-types coupled with plant fossils (mainly equisetaceous stems and roots) from the fluvial–lacustrine Late Permian to Middle Triassic Shichuanhe section in North China. These ichnofossils constitute several ichnoassemblages, including resting traces (Lockeia), locomotion traces (Diplichnites , Kouphichnium , Protovirgularia), dwelling traces (Arenicolites , Camborygma , Macanopsis , Palaeophycus , Skolithos), grazing traces (Gordia , Helminthoidichnites , Monomorphichnus) and feeding traces (Planolites , Scoyenia , Spongeliomorpha , Taenidium) and some of them were scarcely reported in the coeval sediments of North China. The ichnological criteria, such as ichnodiversity, intensity of bioturbation, and burrow size and depth, exhibit a significant reduction in the latest Permian rocks, accompanied by simplification of trace maker ethology. These signals initially rebound in the early Early Triassic, when the behavioral generalists opportunistically occupied the empty niches and constructed simple but deep Skolithos. A full reconstruction of continental ecosystems should take place in the late Early Triassic to Middle Triassic, with high ichnodiversity, intensive bioturbation and behavior complexity of trace producers.
