Using data from the Nairobi Urban Health and Demographic Surveillance System (NUHDSS), this paper seeks to understand the characteristics of adolescent girls who are circumcised in Kenya. The paper discusses the determinants of female circumcision in two Nairobi informal settlements. It is based on detailed information collected from young persons aged 12-24 targeting major transition events such as first sex, childbirth, marriage, and circumcision. Out of 4058 adolescents and young people interviewed 2010 were adolescent girls and young women. Out of the total number of interviewees, the 527 girls and young women on whom this paper is based are from ethnic communities that practice circumcision. We used the life-table technique to estimate the median age at circumcision and logistic regression to analyse the relationship between female circumcision and adolescent sexuality, controlling for other characteristics. The type of stay within the demographic surveillance area (DSA), religion, ethnicity, residential location and mother's education were associated with being circumcised. Current school attendance was not associated with being circumcised but if one had never attended school then they were more likely to be circumcised. This paper draws upon literature from economics, and the human capital and equity fields in order to present a theoretical framework for a new multidimensional measure of poverty for Australia. Poverty is about having low living standards; but its measurement has traditionally focused only on an individual's income or on other dimensions of living standards that are not appropriate for contemporary Australian society, such as calorie intake. There are two additional capabilities individuals require for adequate living standards: health and education. Each of these is required for basic functioning within modern society, but have traditionally been ignored by measures of poverty. This paper argues that health is a basic capability people need for a fulfilling life, allowing individuals to participate in activities essential in modern society, and that education can also be seen in this light. As such it is vital that health and education be included in measures of poverty. In order to move Australian poverty measurement forward and build upon the work of the past, poverty measurement must move its focus away from only looking at low income, and take a holistic focus on the living standards of individuals by incorporating assessments of health and education. The aim of this paper is to review issues related to early intervention in mental health among adolescent students, and to specifically evaluate a school-based, early intervention program, which sought to address issues of mental health among students in a rural community in southern Australia. The early intervention program began in 2004 as school counsellors and local health professionals sought to address the difficulties rural secondary school students encountered in accessing support services. The paper seeks to explore the effectiveness of this school-based, early intervention for students, in decreasing the level of crises among students or the seriousness of associated outcomes to mental health issues, including dis-engagement from formal education. The question we raise in this paper is whether the educational gradient in avoidable mortality differs from overall and non-avoidable mortality among men and women in Norway. By avoidable deaths we refer to deaths caused by diseases that are either treatable if given appropriate medical care, or preventable if available preventive measures were implemented. The data set is derived from official administrative registers and includes all Norwegian men (1 107 427) and women (1 087 842) aged 25-67 years with information about status alive/dead during the period 1994-1999. Adjusted for sociodemographic and socioeconomic factors, education forms a marked and independent gradient in overall and non-avoidable mortality and an even steeper gradient in avoidable mortality - in particular in ischemic heart disease and preventable deaths. The educational gradient is shallower for deaths considered treatable by health care, but is still present. These patterns apply to men and women alike. The findings of our study suggest that health care and health policies may play a role in reducing inequalities in deaths that are 'avoidable, unnecessary and unjust'. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The 21st century will be characterised by aged and ageing nations, making eldercare a growing concern. Most eldercare in most nations will be provided informally, primarily by female family members. Helping these people understand the dimensions of eldercare is a key to effective and cost-effective caregiving. The Person-Environment Model (Lawton and Nahemow 1973) is proposed as a theoretical framework for understanding, assessing, and optimising family-based caregiving. This paper presents findings from a qualitative study of informal rehabilitation caregiving provided to elderly stroke survivors in Thailand. Four main rehabilitation dimensions (biological, psychological, social, spiritual) are identified, as are three main caregiver needs (information, assistance, and support). We suggest that while the Person-Environment Model is useful in developed nations, it is perhaps more valuable in societies where fewer options to family-based eldercare exist, and thus where effective informal eldercare is more critical. Informed by Bourdieu and Passeron's theory of reproduction, we investigated relationships between the cultural and economic capitals of South Korean parents and the capitals and self-rated health of their adult children in cross-sectional survey data from the 2006 Korea Welfare Panel Study. Parental education and childhood economic circumstances manifested independent associations with the self-rated health of the adult respondents. Much of the connection between parental capitals and respondent self-rated health was explained by respondent education. Educational attainment and household income but not receipt of monetary inheritance from their parents were significantly associated with the self-rated health of the respondents. Lastly, parental educational attainment was associated with the self-rated health of the women but not the men over and above the capitals held by the respondents themselves. Our study illuminates the importance of the intergenerational transmission of multiple forms of capital in the production of good health for South Korean adults. In particular, we propose that wealthy and well-educated South Korean parents employ their capitals to develop math and linguistics skills in their children that facilitate good performance in the standardised university entrance exams, success in the labour and/or marriage markets and, ultimately, good self-rated health for their adult children. Having a difficulty with reading, or being unable to read, has not always been a medical problem. In the late nineteenth century, physicians such as (Broadbent 1872; Hinshelwood 1895) became interested in identifying particular bodies with reading difficulties. This article is focused around the question of 'how' reading difficulties were formed as a concern for medical researchers. It shall be suggested that the existence of acquired word-blindness as a legitimate medical diagnosis had established the inability to read or difficulty with reading as a medical concern, albeit with a different aetiology. This constituted the practical conditions and established a vocabulary that made congenital word-blindness a technically feasible diagnosis. The medical concern for a difficulty with reading was in most cases a concern with how this difficulty could be overcome. The clinical criteria that were negotiated for congenital word-blindness seem to have been negotiated in relation to rationalities of government concerned with capitalising the population.
