Internet support groups are widely considered friendly, non-judgmental 'safe spaces' for exchanging support and information. However, online HIV/AIDS support group discussions of seropositivity disclosure ethics show that morality is hotly debated, sometimes in very harsh, judgmental terms. This paper is based on a wider study of over 16,000 pages downloaded from 16 different HIV/AIDS support groups. It presents a single discussion 'thread' in which group pressure persuades a fellow-participant to retreat (at least verbally) from initial unwillingness to disclose his seropositivity to partners. This paper demonstrates the impact of group discussions, and their potential as agents of change. The Discussion considers why such examples are rare, and what conditions might produce them. It locates this thread within the tradition of community empowerment, and assesses the suitability of Habermas' concept of the ideal speech situation to understanding online support and discourse. Health in Western society has become viewed as an achievement: something people are supposed to work at to enhance their quality of life or risk chronic illness and premature death. This is evident in the research documenting the close connection between chronic illnesses and health lifestyles. Almost all of this research is based on Western populations and much of it treats health behaviour and lifestyles as matters of individual choice or agency. While agency is important, structural conditions can 'act back' on individuals to configure their lifestyles in particular ways. The focus of this paper is to apply a new theoretical model to an Asian context. This model features a convergence between agency and structure and is supported by studies in Western countries. If the model is to have global relevance, it needs to be representative of health lifestyles in Asia as well. Unfortunately, there very few relevant studies available in Asia. Consequently, the intent of this paper is to not only present an initial theoretical framework for such studies, but also to call attention to the need for research in Asia on this topic. Since the first panels of the Australian AIDS Memorial Quilt were officially launched in Sydney in 1988, it has become a widely recognised memorial to people who have died from AIDS. This paper discusses how AIDS Memorials, namely the AIDS Quilt and the annual Candlelight Vigils, have challenged the stigma surrounding HIV/AIDS through creating public space for the expression of grief. The paper draws on the idea of ‘social movement frames’, demonstrating how, through the use of symbolic actions and ritualised performance, the political and ideological beliefs of the AIDS movement were expressed not only through articulated argument or attempt at rational persuasion, but through the demonstration of alternative cultural practice. This paper discusses the perspectives of 18 people who were living with HIV/AIDS in Melbourne, Australia, and who were using complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) alongside biomedicine. I argue that although people may perceive the holistic focus of CAM to be more desirable than the more pathogenic focus of biomedicine, a holistic approach is also associated with limitations. In this study, participants were motivated to use CAM because of the perceived limitations of biomedicine and also because of a desire to have control over how their illness was managed. However the majority of participants were not interested in the philosophical principles of CAM, rather in whether these therapies were effective and manageable. These findings suggest that although people may hold different beliefs about CAM as compared with biomedicine, an approach to healthcare that has a practical focus on both clinical outcomes and patient wellbeing may be acceptable to most people. This research explores the short-term socioeconomic effect of antiretroviral treatment (ART) in HIV positive patients attending the Perinatal HIV Research Unit clinics in Soweto, South Africa. An overall increase in mean personal and household income following commencement of ART was noted. Mean personal income rose 53% over baseline income. A decrease in the number of meals missed in households was noted in 10% of the sample. The leading themes regarding income were change in employment status and social grants. Antiretroviral treatment increased the capacity to seek employment and unemployed individuals were actively searching for work. Patients noted an improvement in well-being, with fewer to no episodes of illness, and improved quality of life from three months after starting ART. The empirical evidence suggests that individuals gain substantial benefits from being on ART despite the socioeconomic challenges in South Africa. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
