In the past decades, public health has increasingly addressed what has been called the children's obesity 'epidemic', most notably through large-scale initiatives promoting physical activity. Through a discourse analysis the current paper critically examines such efforts in Canadian and Australian public health. Public health websites in Canada and Australia were examined for information concerning children's health, physical activity and obesity and explored for how these issues were represented in the discourse. Bacchi's (2009) 'What's the problem represented to be?' approach to discourse analysis guided our interrogation of the taken-for-granted assumptions underlying Canadian and Australian public health discourse, the ideological and political influences involved in its construction, and the knowledge base upon which it rests. Individuals’ perception of their work as meaningful contributes to their sense of identity. While individual processes of identity development through work have been studied extensively, we know little about how social processes may contribute to this development. This article seeks to better understand social processes of professional identity development through work by examining nurses’ reactions to changes in their end of shift reports. Field observations were conducted with two healthcare teams on the internal medicine ward of a Swiss teaching hospital. During the observation period, organisational changes in end of shift reports, a crucial time in nurses’ shift, were introduced to the teams and then implemented. Before the changes, nurses used individual and collective strategies to make their work meaningful and to affirm their professional identity. Individually, nurses sought recognition from their co-workers during end of shift reports. Collectively, nurses resorted to professional values and discourses that set them apart from other professional groups. However, changes in shift reports threatened these strategies. This article shows how nurses make their work meaningful in the eyes of others and how others’ recognition contributes to nurses’ sense of professional identity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In an online survey of transgender people conducted in Australia and New Zealand, half the respondents (50.6%) reported having made attempts to amend formal documentation to reflect their current gender identity, and that this was crucial to their sense of personal and identity recognition, as well as an affirmation of citizenship. Experiences and outcomes varied, even within the same organisation, leading to different degrees of difficulty and frustration. For gender to be changed on some documentation, the individual is required to show evidence of having had a related surgical procedure. Almost 90% of participants who had undergone surgery had also made attempts to change documentation, and a quarter of participants who had not undergone any surgical procedures had made similar attempts. Participants who had been able to successfully change their documentation experienced this as affirming of their gender, and as recognition of civil belonging. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
