The numerical simulation of a shell-and-tube heat exchanger (STHE) depends on a large number of computational cells. The number of computational cells increases dramatically with increasing heat transfer surfaces in heat exchangers, such as increasing the number of tubes or using dimples as modified surfaces. Computational cost is one of the critical parameters in many industrial applications for heat exchanger analysis. The present study uses the P-NTU thermal analysis method, proposes correlations to predict heat transfer inside and outside the tubes, and then analyzes the STHE with elliptical dimples. The analytical approach shows 0.8% and 9% errors for two STHEs with specified heat performance, which is entirely acceptable. Also, for the STHE with elliptical dimples, the results indicate a 40.6% increase in the heat capacity of STHE. Increasing the heat capacity of STHE by using modified surfaces such as dimples significantly reduces the dimensions and weight of STHE in industrial applications. A numerical study is carried out on mixed convection and entropy generation of Al2O3/water nanofluid due to a rotating cylinder inside a square cavity. The numerical computations are performed taking the non-homogenous model of Buongiorno into consideration. The inner moving rotating circular cylinder is maintained at a constant hot temperature Th and the other left and right vertical walls of the cavity are maintained at a constant cold temperature Tc. The bottom and top horizontal walls are maintained as adiabatic. The Galerkin weighted residual method is implemented to numerically solve the governing equations. The Rayleigh number (104 ≤ Ra ≤ 107), angular rotational velocity (0 ≤Ω≤ 600) nanoparticles loading (0 ≤ ϕ ≤ 0.04) and the dimensionless radius of rotating cylinder (0.1 ≤ R ≤ 0.4) are the governing parameters of this study. Numerical results for the streamlines, isotherms, isentropic lines, nanoparticle loading, local and average Nusselt number and Bejan number are obtained and presented graphically. The problem of combined heat and mass transfer by natural convection over a permeable cone embedded in a uniform porous medium in the presence of an external magnetic field and internal heat generation or absorption effects is formulated. The cone surface is maintained at either constant temperature and constant concentration or uniform heat and mass fluxes. In addition, the cone surface is assumed permeable in order to allow for possible fluid wall suction or blowing. The resulting governing equations are non-dimensionalized and transformed into a non-similar form and then solved numerically by an implicit, iterative, finite-difference method. Comparisons with previously published work are performed and excellent agreement between the results is obtained. A parametric study of the physical parameters is conducted and a representative set of numerical results for the temperature and concentration profiles as well as the local Nusselt number and the Sherwood number is illustrated graphically to show special trends of the solutions. The problem of coupled heat and mass transfer by natural convection from a semi-infinite inclined flat plate in the presence of an external magnetic field and internal heat generation or absorption effects is formulated. The plate surface has a power-law variation of both wall temperature and concentration and is permeable to allow for possible fluid wall suction or blowing. The resulting governing equations are transformed using a similarity transformation and then solved numerically by an implicit, iterative, finite-difference scheme. Comparisons with previously published work are performed and good agreement is obtained. A parametric study of all involved parameters is conducted and a representative set of numerical results for the velocity and temperature profiles as well as the skin-friction parameter, average Nusselt number, and the average Sherwood number is illustrated graphically to show typical trends of the solutions.
