The issue of water contamination has gotten worse worldwide due to industrialization and population increase. The wastewater discharge techniques used by Ethiopia's textile sector do not comply with the national discharge standard. Because the discharge of inadequately treated or untreated textile effluent into the environment is becoming more frequent. Thus, minimizing this trend's harm to the environment requires using the best wastewater treatment technology. Coagulation is considered one of the most effective methods for treating textile wastewaters, which technically need to have a natural or artificial coagulant added to eliminate dangerous pollutants. Nonetheless, criticism has been leveled against the use of chemical coagulants due to their serious disadvantages. This has led to an interest in substituting natural materials for chemical coagulants. The main objective of this study was to evaluate and compare the effectiveness of various powders and Moringa seed cactus pad powders when employed as a natural coagulant to clean up textile effluent. Moringa seeds and cactus pad consist of proteins (cationic and dimeric) which help in neutralizing and absorbing colloidal charges in water containing suspended solids. To examine the impacts of various operating parameters, including coagulant dose, pH, and mixing time, as well as the ideal coagulation conditions, experiments were conducted using a jar testing system. The ideal parameters were pH 4, 5 g/l of coagulant, 40 min of mixing time, 2 min of fast mixing at 100 rpm, 40 min of gradual mixing at 40 rpm, and 30 min of settling time. Under these ideal circumstances, 82.33 Moreover, cactus pad powder reduced turbidity by 53.16 %, TDS by 97 %, BOD by 58.75 %, COD by 25.37 %, Conductivity by 60 %, and TSS by 56.33 %. Therefore, using Cactus pad as a natural coagulant is advised. Rather than using Moringa seed, it efficiently eliminates turbidity, TDS, and TSS from wastewater effluents from the textile sector. Eventually, one of the natural coagulants employed in the coagulation process, Cactus pad, proved to be useful and was chosen.

This study investigated English language teacher educators' knowledge and skills on early grade reading instruction. It employed a quantitative design, particularly the descriptive comparative one, utilizing cluster random sampling method to include all (N = 43) English language teacher educators from three teacher education colleges (15 from Arba Minch, 11 from Hosana and 17 from Hawassa) in Ethiopia. The study used test and years of teaching experience as instruments to collect data. It employed descriptive statistics and One sample t-test to identify level of knowledge and skills English language teacher educators had on early grade reading, Multiple regression and Beta weights to determine the combined and relative contributions of domains of the early grade reading for English language teacher educators' knowledge and skills while Spearman's rho Correlation to examine the relationship between English language teacher educators' years of teaching experience and their knowledge and skills test score. Findings revealed that majority of English language teacher educators were at low level of knowledge and skills; they scored the skills test better than the knowledge one. Moreover, English language teacher educators in the current study had significantly low’ level of early grade reading knowledge and skills compared to participants' early grade reading knowledge and skills in the hypothesized population, indicating that there are substantial differences on early grade reading knowledge and skills between the two groups. Although early grade reading domains together significantly contributed to English language teacher educators' level of content knowledge and skills, phonemic was the most while morphology was the least contributor. However, English language teacher educators' years of teaching experience did not show any significant correlation with their early grade reading knowledge and skills. The study concluded that English language teacher educators might not fully equip the preservice English language teachers with the content knowledge and skills to teach the early grade reading.

The interactions between bacteria and microalgae play pivotal roles in resource allocation, biomass accumulation, nutrient recycling, and species succession in aquatic systems, offering ample opportunities to solve several social problems. The escalating threat of harmful algal blooms (HABs) in the aquatic environment and the lack of cheap and eco-friendly algal-biomass processing methods have been among the main problems, demanding efficient and sustainable solutions. In light of this, the application of algicidal bacteria to control HABs and enhance algal biomass processing has been promoted in the past few decades as potentially suitable mechanisms to solve those problems. Hence, this comprehensive review aims to explore the diverse interaction modes between bacteria and microalgae, ranging from synergistic to antagonistic, and presents up-to-date information and in-depth analysis of their potential biotechnological applications, particularly in controlling HABs and enhancing microalgal biomass processing. For instance, several studies revealed that algicidal bacteria can effectively inhibit the growth of Microcystis aeruginosa, a notorious freshwater HAB species, with an antialgal efficiency of 24.87 %–98.8 %. The review begins with an overview of the mechanisms behind algae-bacteria interactions, including the environmental factors influencing these dynamics and their broader implications for aquatic ecosystems. It then provides a detailed analysis of the role of algicidal bacteria in controlling harmful algal blooms, as well as their role in bioflocculation and the pretreatment of microalgal biomass. Additionally, the review identifies and discusses the constraints and challenges in the biotechnological application of these interactions. By exploring the strategic use of algicidal bacteria, this review not only underscores their importance in maintaining aquatic environmental health but also in enhancing biomass processing efficiency. It offers valuable insights into future research avenues and the potential scalability of these applications, both in situ and at an industrial level.

Globally, the degradation of soil, water, and forests has had a significant impact on both livelihoods and the environment. This issue is particularly severe in developing countries, including Ethiopia. Despite extensive efforts to implement conservation measures for soil, water, and forests in the highlands of Ethiopia, there has been a lack of thorough evaluation and documentation regarding the adoption of these practices by rural households. It is crucial to have scientific and up-to-date information at various spatial scales in order to effectively monitor existing practices, scale up successful initiatives, and promote sustainable regional development. Therefore, this paper focuses on analyzing the adoption of soil, water, and forest conservation activities by households in the upper Gelana watershed, South Wollo zone, Amhara Regional State of Ethiopia. The field data collection for this study took place from January to March 2022, from 150 rural household heads. Data analysis was carried out using SPSS software version 23. Descriptive statistics, Pearson bivariate correlation, and multinomial logistic regression were used. The survey findings revealed that 69 % of the respondents had implemented various soil, water, and forest conservation measures at different stages. The Pearson correlation results indicated a positive relationship between the adoption of soil, water and forest conservation practices. The multinomial logistic regression analysis has revealed that age, gender, access to credit, and access to extension services, significantly influenced the households’ decision behaviour to adopt soil conservation practices. Age, access to extension service, and access to water resource were significant predictors of adoption of water conservation practices; whereas age, educational status, and access to extension service were significant predictors of adoption of forest conservation practices. This study underscores the significance of institutional factors in driving the adoption of technology in the research area. It further recommends policies that prioritize the dissemination of information on effective strategies, improvement of access to extension services, water resources, and credit facilities to promote sustainable watershed management. This study is exceptional in its innovative approach, which explores the convergence of these vital conservation domains within the distinct setting of the upper Gelana watershed. Studying the adoption of these technologies is crucial for informing policy-making and designing effective interventions that promote sustainable watershed practices. In this case, the Ministry of Agriculture, and development agents should scale up the adoption of these practices and take remedial actions for those not yet adopted.

Several strains of Leishmania parasite are involved in the occurrence of leishmaniasis infections, which makes its prevention and treatment very challenging. Currently, all forms of leishmaniasis are being treated with chemical drugs, which have limitations and adverse effects. Discovering antileishmanial agents from natural sources can lead to novel drugs against this dreadful disease. The essential oils and nonpolar solvent extracts of the roots of E. kebericho exhibit antileishmanial activity. Thus, the isolation of the leishmanicidal compounds from the roots of E. kebericho through a bioassay-guided technique was carried out in this study. The present finding showed that the essential oil and hexane fraction of crude extract from the roots of E. kebericho possessed significant leishmanicidal activity against L. major and L. tropica. Dehydrocostus lactone (1), one of the major constituents of the essential oil and hexane fraction, was more active than the standard drug miltefosine against L. major and L. tropica promastigotes. The presence of α-methylene, γ-lactone is the responsible moiety of dehydrocostus lactone towards the leishmanicidal activity against the tested Leishmania species. The MTT assay of dehydrocostus lactone showed inactive toxicity against the human cervical carcinoma HeLa cells. In addition, dehydrocostus lactone exhibits a broad spectrum of antibiotic activities. Based on this interesting finding, dehydrocostus lactone was identified as a potential lead for treating infections caused by Leishmania.

Ethiopia Province has diverse forest resources. However, it has decreased over time, leaving the country's forest with only remnant patches. Therefore, the present study was conducted to examine the species composition, structure and regeneration status of woody plant species along disturbance gradients. To collect the data, the forests were first stratified into low disturbed (LD), moderately disturbed (MD) and heavily disturbed (HD) groups based on information from reconnaissance site visits and consultations with key informants. Three transect lines were laid systematically 200 m apart, and rectangular plots 10 m∗20 m (200 m2) in length were laid at 50 m intervals along each transect, for a total of 27 plots. The DBH and height of all woody individuals with ≥5 cm and ≥2 m were measured. Seedling and sapling data were recorded in four subplots of 2 m∗5 m (10 m2) respectevly in the opposite corner of the main plot. Woody species density, richness, evenness, diversity, frequency and IVI were determined for each disturbance class, and one-way ANOVA and mean comparison tests were used to examine significant differences among disturbance classes. A total of 37 woody species and 27 families were recorded. Based on structural analysis, only Croton macrostachyus exhibited an inverted J shape. It is concluded that woody species composition was affected by human disturbance. Therefore, a concentrated form of forest conservation should be established to protect against excessive human disturbance.

Wheat is an important crop for food security, providing a source of protein and energy for the growing population in Ethiopia. However, both biotic and abiotic factors limit national wheat productivity. The availability of genetically diverse wheat genotypes is crucial for developing new wheat varieties that are both high-yielding and resilient to stress. Therefore, this field trial aimed to assess phenotypic variation and relationship among ICARDA-derived bread wheat genotypes using multivariate analysis techniques. The trial was conducted at three locations: Enewari, Wogere, and Kulumsa using an alpha lattice design with two replications during the main cropping seasons of 2022 and 2023. Phenotypic data on eight agronomic traits and the severity of yellow rust were collected and R programming was used for data analysis. Individual and combined location data analysis of variance showed significant differences (p ≤ 0.05) among genotypes for most of the studied traits. The highest heritability and genetic advance as a percentage of the mean were observed in days to heading (90.8, 21.29), plant height (72.4, 28.6), seeds per spike (61.7, 28), thousand kernel weight (61.9, 12), and area under the disease progress curve (67, 39.8), suggesting a predominance of additive gene action. Grain yield showed a strong positive correlation with days to maturity, plant height, spike length, spikelet per spike, and thousand kernel weight for each location. Dendrogram and phylogenetic tree methods were used to group genotypes into four genetically distinct clusters. Cluster II and III had the greatest inter-cluster distance, indicating higher diversity among their genotypes. This study identified new candidate genotypes with superior agronomic performance, high grain yield traits, and robust resistance to yellow rust, making them valuable for both current and future wheat breeding programs. Additionally, the comprehensive dataset produced in this study could facilitate the identification of genetic variations influencing desirable traits through genome-wide association analysis.

Medicinal plants Highly aromatic crude materials are utilized for treating warts as an alternative medicine to surgical treatment because they can be permanently removed from the body. Thus, this investigation aimed to extract plant material from Calotropis procera leaves, describe the phytochemical screening, analyze anti-microbial activities, determine the functional groups in FTIR, and identify the chemical compounds in GC-MS. The PH, specific gravity, and viscosity of the crude extracts of Calotropis procera were determined at 4.5, 0.79, and 0.49, respectively. Analyze the solubility of crude extracts; ethanol can dissolve while water does not. Flavonoids, alkaloids, phenols, tannins, and saponins were also present in the phytochemical screening tests of the Calotropis procera extracts, triterpenoids, terpenoids, and steroids were not present in the crude extract. Flavonoids, alkaloids, phenols, tannins, and saponins are the primary phytochemical components found in therapeutic plant material. The Calotropis procera crude extracts analyzed for functional groups by FT-IR contained a hydroxyl group, alkane, carbonyl, aldehyde, ketone, phenols, ester, alcohol, and methylene. The chemical compounds analyzed by GC-MS of Calotropis procera crude material were found to have 22 main compounds. Of 22 compounds, 5 compounds are active ingredients for the applications of medical purposes. The bioactive compounds found in the Calotropis procera plant extract are neophytadiene, hexahydrofarnesyl, lanosterol, 2,4-dimethylbenzo [H]quinolone, and squalene. Those bioactive compounds have anti-bacterial, analgesic, antipyretic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant, antiviral, and anti-cancer properties. In an in vitro antimicrobial activity test, the crude extract effectively inhibited more gram-positive bacteria than gram-negative bacteria. This collective reason is why the traditional therapist uses this Calotropis procera plant for the treatment of warts.

Previous studies have revealed the microbial quality of Awaze paste. However, limited reports describe the effect of individual spices on Awaze paste quality. A mixture design approach was used to determine the appropriate proportions, with 15 experimental points for independent variables including RP (60–90 %), GA (10–30 %), RO (5–20 %), and GI (5–10 %). The techno-functional properties, particle size, antioxidant activity (DDPH radical assay), proximate composition, iron (Fe), zinc (Zn) content, viscosity, hardness, and microbiological quality of Awaze paste were assessed. The prepared Awaze paste showed a range of characteristics, with antioxidant activity (DDPH radical assay) ranging from 11.86 % to 62.5 %, crude protein content from 6.18 % to 16.22 %, crude fat from 5.7 % to 12.6 %, crude fiber from 16.86 % to 29.06 %, total ash content from 6.32 % to 9.94 %, total carbohydrate from 41.79 % to 60.61 %, energy from 264.3 to 329.2 k cal. , iron (Fe) content from 35.59 to 108.82 mg/100g, zinc (Zn) content from 1.72 to 26.93 mg/100g, viscosity from 65.5 to 125.5 cps, hardness from 8.48 to 55.09 g, yeast and mold count from 0.83 to 2.04 log cfu/g, and total bacterial count from 1.53 to 2.61 log cfu/g. Aims: Maternally inherited diabetes and deafness (MIDD) is a complex disorder characterized by multiorgan clinical manifestations, including diabetes, hearing loss, and ophthalmic complications. This pilot study aimed to elucidate the intricate interplay between nuclear and mitochondrial genetics, epigenetic modifications, and their potential implications in the pathogenesis of MIDD. Main methods: A comprehensive genomic approach was employed to analyze a Sicilian family affected by clinically characterized MIDD, negative to the only known causative m.3243 A > G variant, integrating whole-exome sequencing and whole-genome bisulfite sequencing of both nuclear and mitochondrial analyses. Key findings: Rare and deleterious variants were identified across multiple nuclear genes involved in retinal homeostasis, mitochondrial function, and epigenetic regulation, while complementary mitochondrial DNA analysis revealed a rich tapestry of genetic diversity across genes encoding components of the electron transport chain and ATP synthesis machinery. Epigenetic analyses uncovered significant differentially methylated regions across the genome and within the mitochondrial genome, suggesting a nuanced landscape of epigenetic modulation. Significance: The integration of genetic and epigenetic data highlighted the potential crosstalk between nuclear and mitochondrial regulation, with specific mtDNA variants influencing methylation patterns and potentially impacting the expression and regulation of mitochondrial genes. This pilot study provides valuable insights into the complex molecular mechanisms underlying MIDD, emphasizing the interplay between nucleus and mitochondrion, tracing the way for future research into targeted therapeutic interventions and personalized approaches for disease management.

Alignment studies can offer valuable insights to educators about the effectiveness of the course objectives, assessments, and teaching. In this particular study, the aim was to determine the extent to which teacher-made tests aligned with the learning objectives of natural science subjects. The study included a total of 180 learning objectives (46 from Biology, 71 from Chemistry, and 63 from Physics) and 88 test items (30 from Biology, 30 from Chemistry, and 28 from Physics). Bloom's revised taxonomy was used to identify, organize, and code the objectives and test items. Porter's alignment index was used to analyze the data, allowing for determining the degree of alignment between tests and learning objectives. The results showed that the overall alignment between teacher-made tests with course objectives was 45 % for Biology, 46 % for Chemistry, and 62 % for Physics. The study also found that a dependable degree of alignment was not yet established between learning objectives and tests. Therefore, it was suggested that teachers should use assessment procedures and blueprints that consider higher-order cognitive levels and expected learning objectives. Further investigations are also required to determine whether students are meeting the expected learning objectives and moving to the next grade level.

The phenomenon of school dropout, which entails the failure to meet the minimum educational requirements, and early marriage, which involves the marital union of girls prior to attaining 18 years of age, constitute crucial issues in Ethiopia. This research endeavor sought to identify the determinants of these two outcomes. A weighted sample of 3091 girls who had experienced early marriage and school dropout was drawn from the 2016 Ethiopian Demographic and Health Survey (EDHS) dataset and analyzed utilizing bivariate binary multilevel models featuring spatial effects. The prevalence rates of early marriage and school dropout were 62.9 % and 75.4 %, respectively. We observed non-uniform spatial distributions of early marriage and school dropout across Ethiopia. The odds ratio of the association between early marriage and school dropout was 1.39, indicating a significant interdependence of these two outcomes. The probability of early marriage and school dropout was estimated to be 1.63 and 1.18 times higher, respectively, for girls hailing from rural areas and 1.70 and 1.23 times higher, respectively, for those classified in the poorest wealth index, as compared to their counterparts. Therefore, stakeholders and policymakers must prioritize hotspots, socio-economic, and demographic factors to achieve a meaningful reduction in the incidence of early marriage and school dropout.

Introduction: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection is a major global public health issue, affecting millions of people annually. University students are among the risk groups in the community because of their high-risk behaviors. Few studies have been conducted on HIV/AIDS preventive behaviors and associated factors among university students. Therefore, focusing on these target populations is crucial because it will help university managers and different stakeholders be informed about the burden of the problem and take different measures to halt the distribution of the infection. Objective: To assess the predictors of HIV/AIDS preventive behaviors among undergraduate Health Science University students in Northwest Ethiopia in 2022. Methods: This study used an institution-based cross-sectional design with a single-population proportion formula, and participants were selected using a simple random sampling technique. Data were entered into Epi Data version 4.6.0.2 and exported to SPSS version 26 for cleaning and analysis, and the results were presented using text, graphs, pie charts, percentages, and frequencies. Bivariate and multivariable logistic regression analyses were used, and variables with a p-value of ≤0.25 in the bivariate analysis were entered into the multivariable analysis. A p-value of less than or equal to 0.05 in the multivariable analysis was considered statistically significant. Result: Out of 287 study participants, 284 of them responded completely, with a response rate of 99.0 %. Among the total respondents, 42.3 % (95 % CI: 37.7, 47.8) of the participants had poor HIV/AIDS preventive behavior. Younger age (AOR: 3.05; 95 % CI (1.243, 7.496)), low perceived susceptibility (AOR: 2.12; 95 % CI (1.179, 3.809), low perceived severity (AOR: 3.00; 95 % CI (1.636, 5.509)), high perceived barriers (AOR: 2.78; 95 % CI (1.487, 5.202)), and having poor HIV/AIDS preventive knowledge (AOR: 3.87; 95 % CI (2.170, 6.919)) were significantly associated with poor HIV/AIDS preventive behaviors. Conclusion: The HIV/AIDS preventive behavior of participants in this study was poor. Young age, low perceived susceptibility, low perceived severity, high perceived barriers, and poor HIV/AIDS preventive knowledge were predictors of poor HIV/AIDS preventive behavior. It is better to design strategies and programs by the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Education, university top managers, and other stakeholders to provide appropriate information and focus on behavioral changes in vulnerable population groups.
