Shortly after she became artistic director of Nightwood Theatre, Canada's oldest and largest professional women's theatre company, Kelly Thornton was asked by a reporter whether a feminist theatre company was still needed in the 21st century. Nightwood very much needs to exist, Thornton replied. Feminism is not a dead movement. Theatre is a huge tool in the society according to Thornton. Thornton says that an old boys club mentality and a generally blase attitude in society contribute to the problem. She is part of a group of 15 women, theatre professionals and scholars from across the country that has pledged to update the 1982 study over the next three years.
