A new flavonoid glycoside, xylopoillin A (1), and nine known compounds were isolated from the methanolic extracts of the leaves of Xylopia poilanei. The structure of this new compound was completely elucidated using a combination of 2D NMR techniques (COSY, NOESY, HMQC and HMBC) and HR-ESI- MS analyses. Two new components, isoneocryptotanshinone II (1) and tanshinlactone A (2), were isolated from an EtOH extract of Salvia miltiorrhiza. The structures of 1 and 2 were established by spectroscopic methods and total syntheses. Compound (2) exhibited moderate cytotoxic activities with a CD 50 range of 6.87-8.85 μg/mL against the HeLa (cervical epitheloid carcinoma), HepG2 (hepatocellular carcinoma) and OVCAR-3 (ovarian adenocarcinoma) cell lines.

Three new naturally occurring phenylpropenoyl derivatives, sodium dupracine (1), (E)-dupracine methyl ester (2), (Z)-dupracine methyl ester (3), together with eight known compounds, were isolated from the leaves of Petasites formosanus. Their structures were established by spectral methods and chemical transformations. The isolated compounds showed significant antioxidative activity in DPPH radical scavenging assay.

A new phenylpropanoid glycoside, sargentol (1), was isolated and characterized from the traditional Chinese crude drug "Daxueteng", the stem of Sargentodoxa cuneata, together with twenty seven known compounds. The structures of the isolated compounds were elucidated by means of various NMR techniques and MS spectral analysis.

Phenanthroindolizidine N-Oxide, ficuseptine-A (1), together with eighteen known compounds was isolated from the leaves of Ficus septica. The structures of these compounds were elucidated by spectroscopic analysis. Among them, phenanthroindolizidines, ficuseptine (1), (+)-tylophorine (4) and a mixture of (+)-tylocrebrine (5) and (+)-isotylocrebrine (6), exhibited strong cytotoxic activity against two human cancer cell lines, NUGC and HONE-1.

Chemical investigation on the ethanol extract of stem of Spiraea formosana has resulted in the isolation of a new diterpenoid alkaloid, spiraeaine A (1), together with seven known compounds, hakuchiol (2), p-hydroxybenzaldehyde (3). nonadecyl ferulate (4). glutinol (5). β-sitosteryl glucoside (6). mixture of β-sitosterol (7) and stigmasterol (8). Their structures were determined by the spectral analyses and by comparison with the literature values.
