Classical and neo-classical economists criticize Karl Marx's theory of value as an extension of the Ricardian theory of value and distribution. Marx's economic theories were historically specific to social changes and hinged on the concept of the social relation of capital.

Historians of economics must forge links with their fellow historians of science. Economic historians should not be concerned with winning approval from economists, or with negative reactions from other science historians. The history of science is expanding to include more disciplines and much recent work has connected trends in economic history to trends within the whole of scientific history. Economic historians should consider their profession entirely worthwhile and should be content to let modelling be the province of economists. Several brief responses to this article are included.
