Multiproxy investigations of lacustrine sediments from Laguna Azul (52 °S) document multi-millennial Holocene influences of Southern Hemispheric Westerlies (SHW) on the hydroclimatic variability of south-eastern Patagonia. During the last 4000 years, this hydroclimatic variability is overprinted by centennial warm/dry periods. A cool/wet period from 11,600 to 10,100 cal. BP is succeeded by an early Holocene dry period (10,100–8300 cal. BP) with a shallow lake, strong anoxia, methanogenesis and high salinity. Between 8300 and 4000 cal. BP the influence of SHW weakened, resulting in a freshwater lake considered to be related to less arid conditions. Since 4000 cal. BP, regional temperature decreased accompanied by re-intensification of SHW reaching full strength since 3000 cal. BP. Centred around 2200, 1000 cal. BP and in the 20th century, Laguna Azul experienced century-long warm/dry spells. Between these dry periods, two pronounced moist periods are suggested to be contemporaneous to the 'Dark Age Cold Period' and the 'Little Ice Age'. Different from millennial SHW variations, centennial fluctuations appear to be synchronous for South America and the Northern Hemisphere. A series of long sediment cores was retrieved from Laguna Potrok Aike, Southern Patagonia, within the framework of PASADO (Potrok Aike Maar Lake Sediment Archive Drilling Project), an ICDP (International Continental Scientific Drilling Program) lake drilling project. This maar lake, located at 52°S, 70°W in the Province of Santa Cruz (Argentina), in the southernmost continental area of the world, is one of the few permanent lakes in the region, providing a unique continuous paleoclimatic and paleoecological lacustrine record for the last glacial cycle. Previous multiproxy studies of this site have characterized the environmental history of these dry lands in the Patagonian Steppe for the last 16 cal. ka BP. This new series of sediment cores provides a much longer record of climate variability in Southern Patagonia since 51.3 cal. ka BP. Using a multiproxy strategy, a set of samples (mostly from core catcher material) was analyzed for physical properties, rock magnetism, geochemistry, CNS elemental analysis, stable isotopes, pollen and diatoms. This preliminary multiproxy limnogeological interpretation sheds new light on the regional Pleistocene and Holocene environmental history, revealing lake-level variations through time and identifying time windows of interest where higher resolution analyses will be carried out. A high-resolution multiproxy geochemical approach was applied to the sediments of Laguna Potrok Aike in an attempt to reconstruct moist and dry periods during the past 16 000 years in southeastern Patagonia. The age-depth model is inferred from AMS 14C dates and tephrochronology, and suggests moist conditions during the Lateglacial and early Holocene (16 000–8700 cal. BP) interrupted by drier conditions before the beginning of the Holocene (13 200–11 400 cal. BP). Data also imply that this period was a major warm phase in southeastern Patagonia and was approximately contemporaneous with the Younger Dryas chronozone in the Northern Hemisphere (12 700–11 500 cal. BP). After 8650 cal. BP a major drought may have caused the lowest lake level of the record. Since 7300 cal. BP, the lake level rose and was variable until the ‘Little Ice Age’, which was the dominant humid period after 8650 cal. BP. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
