Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to present insights into the way in which system change can be activated around the provision of services and support for people experiencing multiple disadvantages in an urban setting. Design/methodology/approach: This paper is informed by a thematic analysis of reflections, reports, learning logs, interviews and experiences of those "activating" system change in the Golden Key partnership in Bristol between 2014 and 2021. Findings: Four themes are identified, including "creating the conditions for change", "framing your involvement", "investing in relationships" and "reflective practice and learning". For each of these, an illustrative vignette is provided. Practical implications: Practical recommendations and reflective questions are provided with suggestions of further considerations for applying this approach in different contexts. Purpose: This study aims to present a case study about the Team Around Me (TAM) model of case coordination which was developed by Fulfilling Lives Islington and Camden (FLIC) as an action experiment. The model is a standardised tool for running case conferences for clients experiencing multiple disadvantage (MD). Design/methodology/approach: Deploying a case study approach, this study explores why a TAM-coordinated approach is beneficial for people experiencing MD. Findings: The authors explore why the need for effective case coordination is integral for clients experiencing MD, and how current structures fail to facilitate effective case management. The authors put forward an argument for the four core principles underpinning the TAM model: strengths-based, action-focussed, systems thinking and client involvement. The barriers to embedding and upscaling this approach are discussed, alongside the obstacles presented by the wider system that prevent wider implementation. Originality/value: The TAM model is a new approach to case conferences, designed and upscaled by FLIC, and has since been adopted across two London boroughs, and training has reached services across the UK. This paper highlights the need for innovative approaches to case coordination that centre client involvement, promote a strengths-based approach and recognise system blockages as a key barrier to client progress. Purpose – This paper aims to present an overview of the current state of evidence on the effect of housing circumstances, and housing-related interventions, on adult mental health and well-being. It covers the entire range of health from chronic illness to positive thriving, and both individual and community-level/public health. Design/methodology/approach – The paper is based upon a purposive review, commissioned originally for the UK Department of Health; and therefore is selective in giving priority to research relevant to public policy considerations, and to the UK context. Research with a variety of methodological foundations is considered, where robust enough by its own standards. Findings – The available evidence gives conditional support to policies accentuating empowerment at individual and community levels; early intervention; locality or place-based interventions; and integrated working practice. The complexity of methodological issues emerges as a key challenge for research in this field, and for the prospect of evidence-based national policy. Meanwhile local knowledge and interpretation of data in context may be more reliable than context-blind studies. Research limitations/implications – Where "hard evidence" is unavailable, reports of the lived experience of individuals and in communities remain a legitimate basis for policy and commissioning. Purpose – This paper is an extended review and expert commentary on a recently published study by the Centre for Housing Policy (CHP) which discusses the complexities of research in "housing related support" in the UK context, and proposes further work. This review aims to explore the strengths and limitations of the study; and the potential wider relevance outside the UK research context. Design/methodology/approach – The review methodology is traditionally that of expert opinion. The reviewer draws upon previous evaluation studies of mental health and housing, commissioned by the UK Dept of Health, the (Dept of) Communities and Local Government, the National Institute for Mental Health in England, and the Care Services Improvement Partnership, including additional material on the Mental Health Minimum Dataset. Findings – The CHP report reviewed raises important questions over the complexities of evidencing innovative services. Despite some omissions, it should be helpful to health local commissioners in assessing the value of services; and the further research the report proposes is to be welcomed. The report also provides a useful introduction to "housing related support" for an international research audience, less familiar with the UK social policy and funding context. Originality/value – The review introduces and recommends the CHP study – which is itself a valuable contribution to future research on housing-related support – to a wider audience. This article is a 'taster', and summarises the issues identified in the UK Inquiry report on Mental Health in Later Life. It looks at how the Inquiry undertook its work, how older people with mental health problems are often overlooked and what their views and experiences are of accessing services, what actions are proposed for the housing, health and care sectors, and key issues and recommendations.
