ABSTRACTThe pandemic dramatically accelerated research on vaccine attitudes and uptake, a field which mobilizes researchers from the social sciences and humanities as well as biomedical and public health disciplines. The field has the potential to contribute much more, but the growth in research and the deeper connections between disciplines brings challenges as well as opportunities. This perspective article assesses the recent development of the field, exploring progress whilst emphasizing that not enough attention has been paid to national and local contexts. This lack of contextual attention limits the progress of research and hinders our capacity to learn from the COVID-19 crisis. We suggest three concrete responses: building and recognizing new publishing formats for reporting and synthesizing studies at a country level; establishing country-level interdisciplinary networks to connect research and praxis; and strengthening international comparative survey work by enhancing the focus on local contextual factors.

ABSTRACTThe French health authorities extended vaccination against COVID-19 to adolescents in June 2021, during the epidemic resurgence linked to the delta variant and because of insufficient vaccination coverage to ensure collective protection. In May 2021, we conducted a national online cross-sectional survey of 2533 adults in France to study their attitudes toward COVID-19 vaccines and their acceptance of child/adolescent vaccination according to targeted age groups (<6 years; 6–11; 12–17) and its determinants. We applied a multi-model averaged logistic regression for each of these age groups to study the determinants of favorability to vaccination. Among the respondents, 62.7% (1597) accepted COVID-19 vaccination for adolescents, 48.3% (1223) for children aged 6–11 years, and only 31% (783) for children under 6 years. Acceptance increased with fear of contracting COVID-19 and trust in institutions and decreased as the COVID-19 vaccine risk perception score increased. People favorable to vaccination in general and those sensitive to social pressure were also more often favorable to vaccinating children/adolescents than those who were not. Drivers of acceptance were ranked differently for the different age groups. Understanding these differences is essential to anticipating obstacles to vaccination of these age groups and designing appropriate information and motivational strategies to support it.

ABSTRACTAs the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) spreads across the world, the rapid distribution of an effective vaccine and its acceptability among the population constitute priorities for health authorities. This study aimed to document attitudes of the general population toward a future vaccine against COVID-19. We used the national COCONEL surveys conducted during the lockdown to identify factors associated with vaccine refusal, in the whole population, and separately among men and women. We investigate the role of socioeconomic and demographic factors as well as exposure to COVID-19. Among the 5,018 participants, 24.0% reported their intention to refuse the vaccine. Thinking this vaccine would not be safe, being against vaccination in general, and perceiving COVID-19 to be harmless were the three main reasons given to explain vaccine refusal. Women were more likely to refuse the vaccine, especially due to a reluctance toward vaccination in general or the perception that a COVID-19 vaccine would not be safe. Some factors associated with the intention to refuse the vaccine were the same among men and women such as a lack of prior vaccination against influenza, and concern over being infected with the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), while others differed slightly according to gender such as age, and high prevalence of COVID-19 in their region of residence. Authorities should therefore guarantee that all the necessary precautions are taken before marketing the vaccine and communicate transparently on the process of its development, and on the coverage rate required to reach herd immunity.Abbreviation: EHI: Equivalized Household Income per month; SARS-CoV-2: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2.

ABSTRACTIntroduction. Today, in Sub-Saharan Africa, vaccine-preventable diseases still contribute heavily to high child mortality. Maintaining high coverage rates for childhood vaccines and reducing related social inequalities are public health priorities in Senegal. Our aim was to investigate the determinants of childhood vaccination, including sociodemographic factors and previous vaccine-related decision-making.Methods. Data come from the 2016 Senegalese Demographic and Health Survey, a nationally representative household survey targeting women aged 15–49, with a questionnaire focusing on health and reproductive issues, including their children’s health. We restricted the analysis to children aged 12–23 months (n = 1,143). We used bivariate and multivariate analyses for investigating the determinants of several childhood vaccinations (Bacillus Calmette-Guérin, pentavalent, polio, measles and yellow fever vaccines), including sociodemographic factors and previous shots.Results. We identified two main sociodemographic predictors of childhood vaccination in Senegal: the mother’s education level, which was strongly and positively correlated to every vaccination considered, except from the BCG vaccination, and the region of residence, with higher vaccination coverage rates in the Centre and West of Senegal. Moreover, previous shots were also strongly predictive of subsequent shots.Conclusion. The positive impact of mother’s education on child vaccination illustrates the wide-ranging benefits of educating girls, while the regional variability of immunization rates requires more research to be better understood. Previous shots are probably a proxy variable for unobservable factors strongly correlated to vaccinations, but beyond this ‘proxy effect’, they may also have their own specific effect on following shots. We believe this topic deserves further research.

ABSTRACTEurope is increasingly described as the region in the world with the least confidence in vaccination, and particularly in the safety of vaccines. The aim of this systematic literature review was to gather and summarise all peer-reviewed and grey literature published about determinants of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine hesitancy in Europe. Ten thematic categories were identified across the 103 articles which were included in the review. Participants from European studies most commonly reported issues with the quantity and quality of information available about HPV vaccination; followed by concerns about potential side effects of the vaccine; and mistrust of health authorities, healthcare workers, and new vaccines. Comparative analyses indicated that confidence determinants differed by country and population groups. This evidence supports the need to develop context-specific interventions to improve confidence in HPV vaccination and design community engagement strategies aiming to build public trust.

ABSTRACTResearch on vaccine criticism on the Internet is now at a crossroads, with an already important body of knowledge published on the subject but also a continuous and even growing interest in the scientific community. In this commentary, we reflect on the published literature from the standpoint of sociologists interested in social movements and their activists and the influence they can have on vaccination behaviors. We suggest several avenues of research for future studies of vaccine criticism on the Internet: 1) paying more attention to the actors who publish vaccine critical contents and to their use of the Internet in relationship to the other means through which they try to mobilize the population - the production of vaccine critical information on the Internet, and not only its nature and its reception, should therefore become one of the main objects of this strand of research -; 2) paying closer attention to what distinguishes the different strands of vaccine criticism regarding both what they dislike about vaccines (or about a given vaccine) and how this fight is integrated in a more general political or cultural struggle; 3) investigating further how the new forms of social interactions allowed by the Internet affect the transmission of vaccine related information and the capacity of vaccine critical actors to enroll members of the public in their political or cultural struggle.

ABSTRACTTo achieve the full benefits of vaccination, it is key to understand the underlying causes of low vaccination by researching the barriers to vaccination at a local level. This systematic literature review aims to identify the reasons given by community members for the non-vaccination and under-vaccination of children and adolescents in sub-Saharan Africa. PubMed, Web of Science, PsycINFO, African Index Medicus, and African Journals Online databases were searched to identify articles published between 2010 and 2020. A total of 37 articles were included. As 17 studies did not report the reasons for non-vaccination and under-vaccination separately, we considered these two outcomes as “incomplete vaccination”. The most common reasons for incomplete vaccination were related to caregiver’s time constraints, lack of knowledge regarding vaccination, the unavailability of vaccines/personnel in healthcare facilities, missed opportunities for vaccination, caregiver’s fear of minor side effects, poor access to vaccination services, and caregiver’s vaccination beliefs.

ABSTRACTHuman Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination is one of the most publicly mistrusted vaccines in Europe, with countries such as France struggling with low vaccine uptake due to parental questioning of vaccine risks and benefits. However, limited evidence exists on adolescent girls’ perceptions of the risks and benefits of HPV vaccination. The aim of this qualitative study was to provide an in-depth exploration and comparison of French mothers (n = 21) and adolescent girls’ (n = 36) perceptions of the risks and benefits of HPV vaccination. A thematic analysis showed that adolescent girls and mothers perceived the risks and benefits of HPV vaccination differently, with girls reporting positive and beneficial views and emotions toward vaccination and mothers expressing concerns about possible risks. Adolescent girls also reported that both perceptions and actual risks and benefits may vary from one individual to another. Vaccine safety was also understood differently, with mothers reporting a widespread view that vaccines are unsafe and focusing on controversial side effects and girls discussing short-term consequences of vaccination (e.g. pain, fever) and administration and storage issues. Strategies to improve uptake of HPV vaccination should consider and address both the mothers’ and daughters’ perceptions and understandings of HPV vaccination.
