The article focuses on the potential use of ammonia as a precooling refrigerant in single mixed refrigerant (SMR) liquefied natural gas (LNG) plants and the benefits of ammonia use instead of propane. It states that butane, ethane, methane, nitrogen, pentane,a nd propane are typically used in the SMR process and reports higher plant efficiencies and capacities can be achieved by modifying the SMR process to divide the cryogenic exchanger's cooling load by using a pure component such as propane.
