The Duna-Tisza Interfluve, Hungary has an agricultural economy but is plagued by severe problems of soil and wetland salinization despite 200 years of intensive research. The study’s objective was to determine the origin of salts and the mechanisms of salinity distribution. To this end, flow-patterns and chemistry of groundwater were evaluated in a 100 km × 65 km area, with emphasis on the Kolon- and Kelemenszek Lakes region. The lakes are located 13 km apart and have chemically contrasting water and soil types. Two groundwater flow-domains were identified: a gravity-drive meteoric fresh water and an over-pressured deeper domain of saline water. The waters are channeled by a highly permeable gravel aquifer to the surface and may merge near Kelemenszek Lake, causing it to be saline. Kolon Lake receives meteoric groundwater only, hence its fresh chemical character. The cross-formational ascent of the deep waters, combined with the gravitational systems’ geometry and the flow-channeling effect of the near-surface rocks, explains the contrasting chemistry between lakes, and the origin and pattern of soil salinization. The scheme is proposed as a generally valid hydrogeological profile for the interfluve, and has been named the Duna-Tisza Interfluve Hydrogeological Type Section.

The objective of the present paper is to show that groundwater is a general geologic agent. This perception could not, and did not, evolve until the system nature of basinal groundwater flow and its properties, geometries, and controlling factors became recognized and understood through the 1960s and 1970s.

The Recharge Area Concept is the proposition that in Canadian-Shield type natural environments recharge areas of regional groundwater flow systems are superior for high-level nuclear waste repositories to other types of groundwater flow regimes, especially to areas of groundwater discharge. This conclusion is reached from an analysis of basinal groundwater flow models. The calculations were made for a two-dimensional flank of a fully saturated topographic basin, 20 km long and 4 km deep, in which groundwater is driven by gravity. Variants of hydraulic-conductivity distributions were considered: 1) homogeneous; 2) stratified; and 3) stratified-faulted. The faults' attitudes were changed by steps from vertical to horizontal for different variants. The model is assumed conceptually to represent the crystalline-rock environment of the Canadian Shield.

Regional hydraulic continuity is a phenomenological property of the rock framework. This property is quantified as the ratio of an induced change in pore pressure at a point of observation to an inducing change at a point of origin. A subsurface rock body is considered to be hydraulically continuous on a given time scale if a change in pressure at any of its points can cause a change at any other point, within a time interval measurable on the specified time scale. The hydraulically continuous behaviour of the rock framework may be masked in large sedimentary basins by large distances, relatively short periods of observations, and sharp contrasts in flow-sensitive properties of subsurface fluids, such as temperature and chemical composition. Due probably mainly to these masking effects, the concept of “hermetically” sealed hydraulic compartments in the subsurface is still used as a working hypothesis by some earth scientists, particularly in petroleum geology.

Numerical simulations show that water and oil/oily-contaminant migration are controlled by regional fluid-potential fields which may be modified locally by highly permeable lenses and buoyancy. In addition, fluid potentials are coupled to the distribution of oil/oily-contaminant via relative permeability and capillary-pressure curves. As saturation distributions evolve through space and time, so do the water and oil fluid-potential surfaces. The importance of capillary forces in oil contaminant migration and entrapment is illustrated by the fact that, in certain cases, lenses fill from above, even when the migrating fluid is lighter than water. Capillary forces operating in conjunction with lenticular reservoirs create excellent dynamic oil traps by allowing free passage of water, while retaining and concentrating oil. The analysis of oil (oily-contaminant) migration using numerical modeling and potentiometric-surface techniques is useful for the prediction of migration pathways and potential accumulation sites. On the other hand, identifying acatual accumulations from fluid-potential measurements (via inverse modeling) is not possible because fluid potentials are not uniquely dependent on saturation.
