There is great interest in ascertaining the degree of climate change necessary to induce substantial changes in snow accumulation and ablation processes in mountain headwater catchments. Therefore, the response of mountain snow hydrology to changes in air temperature and precipitation was examined by simulating a perturbed climate in Reynolds Mountain East (RME), a headwater catchment with a cool mountain climate in Idaho, USA. The cold regions hydrological model was used to calculate snow accumulation, wind redistribution by blowing snow, interception by forest canopies, sublimation and melt for 25 seasons in RME. The uncalibrated simulations of the highly redistributed snow water equivalent compared well to measurements. Results showed that with concomitant occurrence of warming (5 °C) and precipitation change (±20%) in RME, the peak seasonal snow accumulation decreased by 84–90%, snowmelt decreased 51–79%, rainfall to total precipitation ratio increased from 30% to 78%, and overwinter blowing snow transport and sublimation losses from intercepted snow, the snow surface and blowing snow decreased dramatically. Warming causes an increase in inter-water year snowcover variability but a decrease in spatial snow accumulation variability. When warming exceeded 1 °C and a precipitation increased by less than 20%, the peak snow accumulation declined dramatically. The results contrast with those from further north along the North American Cordillera in Yukon, Canada, where the impacts of similar warming on alpine snow can be partly compensated for by concomitant increases in precipitation of less than 20%. Wind redistribution, radiation and turbulent heat fluxes determine seasonal snow accumulation and melt patterns in alpine environments. Mathematical representations of windflow vary in complexity and introduce uncertainty to snow modelling. To characterize this uncertainty, a spatially distributed snow model that considers the physics of blowing snow transport and sublimation and the energy fluxes contributing to snowpack ablation were evaluated for its ability to simulate seasonal snow patterns around a windy alpine ridge in the Canadian Rockies. The model was forced with output from three windflow models of varying computational complexity and physical realism: (i) a terrain-based empirical interpolation of station observations, (ii) a simple turbulence model and (iii) a computational fluid dynamics model. Compared with wind measurements, the windflow simulations produced similar and relatively accurate (biases lower than ±1.1 m s−1) wind speed estimates. However, the snow mass budget simulated by the snow model was highly sensitive to the windflow simulation used. Compared with measurements, distributed snow model depth and water equivalent errors were smallest using either of the two turbulence models, with the best representation of downwind drifts by the computational fluid dynamics model. Sublimation was an important mass loss from the ridge, and windflow model choice resulted in cumulative seasonal sublimation differences ranging from 10.5% to 19.0% of seasonal snowfall. When aggregated to larger scales, differences in cumulative snowmelt and snow transport were negligible, but persistent differences in sublimation and snow-covered area suggest that windflow model choice can have significant implications at multiple scales. The hydrological sensitivity of a northern Canadian mountain basin to change in temperature and precipitation was examined. A physically based hydrological model was created and included important snow and frozen soil infiltration processes. The model was discretized into hydrological response units in order to simulate snow accumulation and melt regimes and basin discharge. Model parameters were drawn from scientific studies in the basin except for calibration of routing and drainage. The model was able to simulate snow surveys and discharge measurements with very good accuracy. The forcing inputs of the hourly air temperatures and daily precipitation were scaled linearly to examine the model sensitivity to conditions included in a range of climate change scenarios: warming of up to 5 °C and change in precipitation of +/− 20%. The results show that peak seasonal snow accumulation, snow season length, evapotranspiration, runoff, peak runoff, and the timing of peak runoff have a pronounced sensitivity to both warming and precipitation change, where the impact of warming is partly compensated for by increased precipitation and dramatically enhanced by decreased precipitation. The snow regime, including peak snow accumulation, snow-free period, intercepted snow sublimation, and blowing snow transport, was most sensitive to temperature, and the impact of a warming of 5 °C could not be compensated for by a precipitation increase of 20%. However, basin discharge was more sensitive to precipitation, and the impact of warming could be compensated for by a slight increase in precipitation. The impacts of 5 °C warming with a +/−20% change in precipitation resulted in snow accumulation, runoff, and peak streamflow decreasing by from one half to one fifth and the snow-free period lengthening by from 46 to 60 days; in both cases, the smaller change is associated with increased precipitation and the larger change with decreased precipitation. These results show that mountain hydrology in Northern Canada is extremely sensitive to warming, that snow regime is more sensitive to warming than streamflow and that changes in precipitation can partly modulate this response. The hydrology of boreal regions is strongly influenced by seasonal snow accumulation and melt. In this study, we compare simulations of snow water equivalent (SWE) and streamflow by using the hydrological model HYDROTEL with two contrasting approaches for snow modelling: a mixed degree-day/energy balance model (small number of inputs, but several calibration parameters needed) and the thermodynamic model CROCUS (large number of inputs, but no calibration parameter needed). The study site, in Northern Quebec, Canada was equipped with a ground-based gamma ray sensor measuring the SWE continuously for 5 years in a small forest clearing. The first simulation of CROCUS showed a tendency to underestimate SWE, attributable to bias in the meteorological inputs. We found that it was appropriate to use a threshold of 2 °C to separate rain and snow. We also applied a correction to account for snowfall undercatch by the precipitation gauge. After these modifications to the input dataset, we noticed that CROCUS clearly overestimated the SWE, likely as a result of not including loss in SWE because of blowing snow sublimation and relocation. To correct this, we included into CROCUS a simple parameterisation effective after a certain wind speed threshold, after which the thermodynamic model performed much better than the traditional mixed degree-day/energy balance model. HYDROTEL was then used to simulate streamflow with both snow models. With CROCUS, the main peak flow could be captured, but the second peak because of delayed snowmelt from forested areas could not be reproduced due to a lack of sub-canopy radiation data to feed CROCUS. Despite the relative homogeneity of the boreal landscape, data inputs from each land cover type are needed to generate satisfying simulation of the spring runoff. A model including slope effects on snow redistribution, interception and energetics was developed using the Cold Regions Hydrological Model platform, parameterized with minimal calibration and manipulated to simulate the impacts of forest disturbance on mountain hydrology. A total of 40 forest disturbance scenarios were compared with the current land cover for four simulation years. Disturbance scenarios ranged from the impact of pine beetle kill of lodgepole pine to clear-cutting of north- or south-facing slopes, forest fire and salvage logging. Pine beetle impacts were small in all cases with increases in snowmelt volume of less than 10% and streamflow volume of less than 2%. This small impact is attributed to the low and relatively dry elevations of lodgepole pine forests in the basin. Forest disturbances due to fire and clear-cutting affected much larger areas and higher elevations of the basin and were generally more than twice as effective as pine beetle in increasing snowmelt or streamflow. For complete forest cover removal by burning and salvage logging, a 45% increase in snowmelt volume was simulated; however, this only translated into a 5% increase in spring and summer streamflow volume. Forest burning with the retention of standing burned trunks was the most effective forest cover treatment for increasing streamflow (up to 8%) because of its minimizing of winter snow sublimation losses from interception and blowing snow. However, increases in streamflow volumes were almost entirely due to reductions in intercepted snow sublimation with decreasing canopy coverage. Peak daily streamflow discharges responded more strongly to forest cover disturbance than did seasonal streamflow volumes, with increases of almost 25% in peak streamflow from the removal of forest canopy by fire and the retention of standing burned trunks. In this study, the Cold Regions Hydrological Modelling platform was used to create an alpine snow model including wind redistribution of snow and energy balance snowmelt to simulate the snowpack over the period 1996–2009 in a small (33 ha) snow-dominated basin in the Spanish Pyrenees. The basin was divided into three hydrological response units (HRUs), based on contrasting physiographic and aerodynamic characteristics. A sensitivity analysis was conducted to calculate the snow water equivalent regime for various combinations of temperature and precipitation that differed from observed conditions. The results show that there was large inter-annual variability in the snowpack in this region of the Pyrenees because of its marked sensitivity to climatic conditions. Although the basin is small and quite homogeneous, snowpack seasonality and inter-annual evolution of the snowpack varied in each HRU. Snow accumulation change in relation to temperature change was approximately 20% for every 1 °C, and the duration of the snowpack was reduced by 20–30 days per °C. Melting rates decreased with increased temperature, and wind redistribution of snow was higher with decreased temperature. The magnitude and sign of changes in precipitation may markedly affect the response of the snowpack to changes in temperature. There was a non-linear response of snow to individual and combined changes in temperature and precipitation, with respect to both the magnitude and sign of the change. Snow accumulation and melt were observed at shrub tundra and tundra sites in the western Canadian Arctic. End of winter snow water equivalent (SWE) was higher at the shrub tundra site than the tundra site, but lower than total winter snowfall because snow was removed by blowing snow, and a component was also lost to sublimation. Removal of snow from the shrub site was larger than expected because the shrubs were bent over and covered by snow during much of the winter. Although SWE was higher at the shrub site, the snow disappeared at a similar time at both sites, suggesting enhanced melt at the shrub site. The Canadian Land Surface Scheme (CLASS) was used to explore the processes controlling this enhanced melt. The spring-up of the shrubs during melt had a large effect on snowmelt energetics, with similar turbulent fluxes and radiation above the canopy at both sites before shrub emergence and after the snowmelt. However, when the shrubs were emerging, conditions were considerably different at the two sites. Above the shrub canopy, outgoing shortwave radiation was reduced, outgoing longwave radiation was increased, sensible heat flux was increased and latent flux was similar to that at the tundra site. Above the snow surface at this site, incoming shortwave radiation was reduced, incoming longwave radiation was increased and sensible heat flux was decreased. These differences were caused by the lower albedo of the shrubs, shading of the snow, increased longwave emission by the shrub stems and decreased wind speed below the shrub canopy. The overall result was increased snowmelt at the shrub site. Although this article details the impact of shrubs on snow accumulation and melt, and energy exchanges, additional research is required to consider the effect of shrub proliferation on both regional hydrology and climate. Model tests of blowing snow redistribution and sublimation by wind were performed for three winters over a small mountainous sub-Arctic catchment located in the Yukon Territory, Canada, using a physically based blowing snow model. Snow transport fluxes were distributed over multiple hydrological response units (HRUs) using inter-HRU snow redistribution allocation factors (SR). Three SR schemes of varying complexity were evaluated. Model results show that end-of-winter snow accumulation can be most accurately simulated using a physically based blowing snow model when SR values are established when taking into account wind direction and speed and HRU aerodynamic characteristics, along with the spatial arrangement of the HRUs in the catchment. With the knowledge that snow transport scales approximately with the fourth power of wind speed (u4), SR values can be (1) established according to the predominant u4 direction and magnitude over a simulation period or (2) can change at each time step according to a measured wind direction. Unfortunately, wind direction data were available only for one of the three winters, so the latter scheme was tested only once. Although the aforementioned SR schemes produced different results, model efficiency was of similar merit. The independent effects of topography and vegetation were examined to assess their importance on snow redistribution modelling over mountainous terrain. Snow accumulation was best simulated when including explicit representations of both landscape vegetation (i.e. vegetation height and density) and topography (i.e. wind exposure). Blowing snow transports and sublimates a substantial portion of the seasonal snowfall in the prairies of western Canada. Snow redistribution is an important feature of prairie hydrology as deep snowdrifts provide a source of meltwater to replenish ponds and generate streamflow in this dry region. The spatial distribution of snow water equivalent in the spring is therefore of great interest. A test of the distributed and aggregated modelling strategies for blowing snow transport and sublimation was conducted at the St. Denis National Wildlife Area in the rolling, internally drained prairie pothole region east of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. A LiDAR-based DEM and aerial photograph-based vegetation cover map were available for this region. A coupled complex windflow and blowing snow model was run with 262,1446 m x 6 m grid cells to produce spatially distributed estimates of seasonal blowing snow transport and sublimation. The calculation was then aggregated to seven landscape units that represented the major influences of surface roughness, topography and fetch on blowing snow transport and sublimation. Both the distributed and aggregated simulations predicted similar end-of-winter snow water equivalent with substantial redistribution of blowing snow from exposed sparsely vegetated sites across topographic drainage divides to the densely vegetated pothole wetlands. Both simulations also agreed well with snow survey observations. While the distributed calculations provide a fascinating and detailed visual image of the interaction of complex landscapes and blowing snow redistribution and sublimation, it is clear that blowing snow transport and sublimation calculations can be successfully aggregated to the spatial scale of the major landscape units in this environment. This means that meso and macroscale hydrological models can represent blowing snow redistribution successfully in the prairies.

Droughts affect the Canadian prairies on a regular basis. The drought of 1999-2005 was the most recent one and was the most severe on record for part of the region. It was characterized by lack of precipitation, desiccation of agricultural soils, decline in groundwater tables and depletion of surface water supplies. The effects on wetlands were particularly severe, with many wetlands completely drying out. The physically based cold regions hydrological modelling (CRHM) platform was used to analyse the impacts of this recent drought on water flow to and storage within a small Canadian prairie wetland. Model simulations were conducted for a small closed basin for the drought period of 1999-2005 and the relatively wet period of 2005-2006. The basin consists of a cultivated upland, draining into a glacially formed pothole depression with no outlet. The wetland fills the depression in wet years and is underlain by a heavy glacial till that impedes groundwater exchange. Results from the observations and model outputs showed that much lower precipitation and snow accumulation, shorter snow-covered duration, enhanced winter evaporation, and much lower discharge to the wetland from basin snowmelt runoff developed in the severe drought years of 1999-2002. As a result, there were only 14.9, 3.7, and 14·4 mm of snowmelt runoff for the springs of 2000, 2001, and 2002, respectively. Compared to the 68·2 mm of melt-water discharge in the spring of 2006, discharge to the wetland was 78, 95, and 79% less for these years. This is consistent with the observed water level in the wetland, which shows dramatic decline over this period. CRHM was used to investigate the potential impact of snow management as a tool to enhance runoff to the wetland during droughts. Model runs parameterized with suppressed vegetation in the cultivated land surrounding the wetland showed increased blowing snow transport to the wetland from an area exceeding the basin area that resulted in greater snow accumulation in and melt-water supply to the wetland.

After a programme of integrated field and modelling research, hydrological processes of considerable uncertainty such as snow redistribution by wind, snow interception, sublimation, snowmelt, infiltration into frozen soils, hillslope water movement over permafrost, actual evaporation, and radiation exchange to complex surfaces have been described using physically based algorithms. The cold regions hydrological model (CRHM) platform, a flexible object-oriented modelling system was devised to incorporate these algorithms and others and to connect them for purposes of simulating the cold regions hydrological cycle over small to medium sized basins. Landscape elements in CRHM can be linked episodically in process-specific cascades via blowing snow transport, overland flow, organic layer subsurface flow, mineral interflow, groundwater flow, and streamflow. CRHM has a simple user interface but no provision for calibration; parameters and model structure are selected based on the understanding of the hydrological system; as such the model can be used both for prediction and for diagnosis of the adequacy of hydrological understanding. The model is described and demonstrated in basins from the semi-arid prairie to boreal forest, mountain and muskeg regions of Canada where traditional hydrological models have great difficulty in describing hydrological phenomena. Some success is shown in simulating various elements of the hydrological cycle without calibration; this is encouraging for predicting hydrology in ungauged basins.

The Canadian prairies are subject to severe extended droughts that are characterized by warmer temperatures, lower precipitation, lower soil moisture and sparser vegetation than normal conditions. The physically based cold regions hydrological modelling platform (CRHM) provides a possible means to analyse the sensitivity of prairie snowmelt processes to drought. The model was tested against detailed observations from Creighton Tributary of the Bad Lake Research Basin, Saskatchewan for the 1974–1975 and 1981–1982 hydrological years and found to perform satisfactorily in reproducing snow accumulation and streamflow without parameter calibration. By lowering winter precipitation and raising winter air temperature from actual meteorological observations and by lowering fall soil moisture and vegetation height parameters, the resulting drought condition sensitivity of snow accumulation, snow cover duration, sublimation of blowing snow, evaporation, infiltration into frozen soils, soil moisture storage change, snowmelt runoff and streamflow discharge was estimated. Snow accumulation and snow cover duration were relatively insensitive to meteorological changes associated with drought because the suppression of blowing snow sublimation moderated reduced snowfall. Infiltration, soil moisture storage change and evaporation were also relatively insensitive to drought conditions. However, lower precipitation, higher air temperature and lower initial soil moisture caused a marked reduction in snowmelt runoff. Similarly, large reductions in streamflow discharge were caused by diminished winter precipitation, increased winter air temperature and decreased fall soil moisture content. A scenario showed that a combination of these factors could cause complete cessation of spring streamflow even under moderate drought of 15% reduction in winter precipitation and 2Ð5 °C increase in winter mean air temperature. Results show that spring runoff and streamflow discharge are inherently unstable in the Canadian prairie environment, and so, magnify the impacts of drought, and through multi-season storage and vegetation change can cause the impacts of hydrological drought to persist for several seasons after meteorological drought has ended. When estimating the water balance for a cold region watershed, that is one that receive a substantial portion of its annual precipitation as snow, accumulation and other winter hydrological processes must be considered. For many of theses watersheds, all but the most fundamental meteorological data (temperature and precipitation), are either not measured or not measured at a reasonable time step. Of particular importance are wind data, as wind influences underestimates of precipitation due to wind undercatch and losses of snow from the snowpack, specifically, snowpack sublimation, and the occurrence and magnitude of blowing snow. Estimating snow accumulation to yield snowmelt amounts requires summing of gauged precipitation and gauge undercatch, and subtracting minus snowpack sublimation and blowing snow transport. The first two components are computed on a daily time step, while the latter two are computed on an hourly time step. From five National Weather Service meteorological stations (Pullman WA, Rawlins WY, Leadville CO, Rhinelander WI, Syracuse NY), the variations in computed snowpack mass losses minus undercatch using data at different time intervals show that at most sites it is difficult to use monthly time steps for computations derived using hourly or daily data. Between mid January and early May 2004, during the Canadian Arctic Shelf Exchange Study 2003–04 expedition, we conducted a field project in which we deployed blowing-snow particle counters, visibility sensors, a FlowCapt device, snow bags, an electric field meter and other instruments related to the observation of drifting and blowing snow on first-year ice in Franklin Bay, Northwest Territories, Canada. Average snow depth was 7 cm at the beginning of the campaign and increased to 17 cm towards the end. Snow density in the first 8 cm of snow cover varied from 80 to 450 g m−3, with a median value of 240 g m−3. Basic results will be presented that relate particle counter profiles, wind speed and other data to visibility. We discuss threshold conditions for blowing snow, heat and water vapour fluxes and the electric field. Relative humidity with respect to ice was generally greater than 95% and sublimation rates are believed to have been low. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Arctic spring landscapes are usually characterized by a mosaic of coexisting snow-covered and bare ground patches. This phenomenon has major implications for hydrological processes, including meltwater production and runoff. Furthermore, as indicated by aircraft observations, it affects land-surface–atmosphere exchanges, leading to a high degree of variability in surface energy terms during melt. The heterogeneity and related differences when certain parts of the landscape become snow free also affects the length of the growing season and the carbon cycle. Small-scale variability in arctic snowmelt is addressed here by combining a spatially distributed end-of-winter snow cover with simulations of variable snowmelt energy balance factors for the small arctic catchment of Trail Valley Creek (63 km2). Throughout the winter, snow in arctic tundra basins is redistributed by frequent blowing snow events. Areas of above- or below-average end-of-winter snow water equivalents were determined from land-cover classifications, topography, land-cover-based snow surveys, and distributed surface wind-field simulations. Topographic influences on major snowmelt energy balance factors (solar radiation and turbulent fluxes of sensible and latent heat) were modelled on a small-scale (40 m) basis. A spatially variable complete snowmelt energy balance was subsequently computed and applied to the distributed snow cover, allowing the simulation of the progress of melt throughout the basin. The emerging patterns compared very well visually to snow cover observations from satellite images and aerial photographs. Results show the relative importance of variable end-of-winter snow cover, spatially distributed melt energy fluxes, and local advection processes for the development of a patchy snow cover. This illustrates that the consideration of these processes is crucial for an accurate determination of snow-covered areas, as well as the location, timing, and amount of meltwater release from arctic catchments, and should, therefore, be included in hydrological models. An overview is provided of Canadian research on snow, frozen soils and permafrost hydrology for 1999-2002, the period between the 1999 IUGG meeting in Birmingham and the 2003 IUGG in Sapporo. Snow research during this period emphasized the blowing snow and sublimation processes, the role of trees in snow distribution, and melt and the effect of heat advection on snowmelt, from patch to regional scales. Regional-scale studies, largely in connection with the Mackenzie GEWEX study, examined the snow conditions of the lower Mackenzie basin and developed a coupled land surface scheme-hydrological model that incorporates snow processes. In frost hydrology, the effects of organic soils on runoff generation and flow delivery were given much attention. Field investigations ranged from plot to hillslope scales, and the results indicate that organic layers of high porosity permit the production of quick flow, even when frozen. Highly fractured bedrock in the Canadian Shield has likewise the effect of permitting snowmelt infiltration at below-freezing temperatures. Finally, changes in snow-covered areas and in snow equivalent over periods from a decade to a century were examined. The responses of snow and ground ice to the warm year of 1998 were also studied as an indication of hydrological responses to climatic warming.

Computing the monthly and winter water balance for cold regions can be difficult due to data scarcity. Historically, the spatial resolution, temporal resolution, and the number of variables measured have been limited. Currently, these data are once again becoming limited. To estimate the net snowpack accumulation, measured precipitation must be adjusted to consider precipitation underestimation due to gauge undercatch, the snow lost to sublimation, and blowing snow transport. Using existing formulations, hourly meteorological data were used to estimate snowpack sublimation and blowing snow transport losses for three winters at six National Weather Service (NWS) automated surface observation stations across the coterminous USA. Wind-induced undercatch was estimated from daily data for the collocated NWS Alter-shielded gauges. For the average wind speed sites (the average wind speed was from 2.4 to 4.3 m s -1 ), 70% of the snow that fell was caught, whereas at the low wind site (1.3 m s -1 ), 90% was caught and only 46% was caught at the high wind site (5.6 m s -1 ). Average snowpack sublimation ranged from 7 mm per month at either low wind or low precipitation sites to over 20 mm per month at average wind sites with either average precipitation and low humidity or high precipitation and moderate humidity. Blowing snow transport was only important at higher wind sites (>4 m s -1 ). A distinct relationship was not obvious for average monthly meteorology for undercatch versus snowpack sublimation plus blowing snow losses. Seasonally, they are approximately equal for more snowy and wet environments.

This paper reports some of the achievements in hydrological research associated with the Mackenzie GEWEX Study (MAGS). MAGS is a multifaceted study of the energy and water cycle in the Mackenzie River Basin, north-western Canada, and emphasizes cold-region processes and modelling. It pursues methodologies of scaling-up process studies to a large river basin that has few measurement sites. This methodology involves new developments, adapting mid-latitude algorithms to the high latitude setting and promoting the use of remote sensing tools for scaling-up. Intensive hydrological process studies have been concentrated at a number of sites. These have been chosen to represent different biophysical facets of the Mackenzie River Basin. They include northern basins in open tundra and at tree-line, a western basin representing the hilly and mountainous western side of the basin, central basin sites of wetlands, Precambrian Shield terrain and the Mackenzie Basin counterpart of the large Laurentian Great Lakes. The most southerly site represents a mixed-wood boreal forest site that is undergoing land-use change as a result of forest harvesting. Regional community model analysis indicates that processes of lee cyclogenesis result in differential input of precipitation across the basin. Significant results centre on models of snow accumulation featuring the role of blowing snow, intercepted snow and snowmelt. These models emphasize the importance of snow patchiness to speed of melt. Snowmelt infiltration into frozen soils is important in controlling runoff, and tundra microlandforms play a unique role in determining the surface runoff characteristics. On the western margins of the basin, there is a very significant difference in the hydrological behaviour of slopes of different aspects as a result of differences in permafrost and vegetation. In the central basin, a deeper understanding of components of the water budget is being gained through stable isotope analysis of wetland waters.

Sublimation fluxes during blowing snow have been estimated to return 10-50% of seasonal snowfall to the atmosphere in North American prairie and arctic environments. These fluxes are calculated as part of blowing snow two-phase particle transport models with provision for phase change based upon a particle-scale energy balance. Blowing snow models have normally been evaluated based upon their ability to reproduce diagnostic mass flux gradient measurements and regional-scale snow redistribution patterns and snow mass. Direct evidence is presented here that large latent heat fluxes (40-60 W m -2 ) that result in sublimation rates of 0.05-0.075 mm snow water equivalent hour -1 , are associated with mid-winter, high-latitude blowing snow events. For events with wind speeds above the threshold level for snow transport, these fluxes are in the range of those predicted by the Prairie Blowing Snow Model. The fluxes are well in excess of those found during spring snowmelt and which can be predicted by standard bulk aerodynamic transfer equations, suggesting that blowing snow physics will have to be incorporated in land surface schemes and hydrological models in order to properly represent snow surface mass and energy exchange during blowing snow events.

The physical characteristics and CO2 concentrations of snow cover in the western Canadian arctic were examined at sites with diAerent landscape forms (valley floor, hillslope, plateau). The greater exposure of plateau snow cover to blowing snow results in diAerences in the structure of the snow cover and diAerent snow strata compared with snow covers on the other landscape forms. Both higher in-pack concentrations of CO2 and the largest vertical CO2 concentration gradients were found in plateau snow cover, the smallest in the deeper hillslope and valley snows. CO 2 gradients in all landscape snow covers followed two patterns, i.e. where concentrations at the soil‐snow interface are higher than those just below (5 cm) and the snow‐atmosphere interface and vice versa. The latter pattern is due to the transport of the gas from the lower levels to the upper levels of the snowpack by wind-induced advection (windpumping) and is indicative of non steady-state, nondiAusive processes. These latter processes should thus be considered in any studies on CO 2 fluxes from Arctic soil where snow cover topography and winds are conducive towindpumping and where concentration gradients resulting from diAusive processes have not been clearly identified. This paper discusses the development and testing of snow algorithms with specific reference to their use and application in land surface models. New algorithms, developed by the authors, for estimating snow interception in forest canopies, blowing snow transport and sublimation, snow cover depletion and open environment snowmelt are compared with field measurements. Existing algorithms are discussed and compared with field observations. Recommendations are made with respect to: (a) density of new and aged snow in open and forest environments; (b) interception of snow by evergreen canopies; (c) redistribution and sublimation of snow water equivalent by blowing snow; (d) depletion in snow-covered area during snowmelt; (e) albedo decay during snowmelt; (f) turbulent transfer during snowmelt; and (g) soil heat flux during meltwater infiltration into frozen soils. Preliminary evidence is presented, suggesting that one relatively advanced land surface model, CLASS, significantly underestimates the timing of snowmelt and snowmelt rates in open environments despite overestimating radiation and turbulent contributions to melt. The cause(s) may be due to overestimation of ground heat loss and other factors. It is recommended that further studies of snow energetics and soil heat transfer in frozen soils be undertaken to provide improvements for land surface models such as CLASS, with particular attention paid to establishing the reliability of the models in invoking closure of the energy equation. #1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Transportation, sublimation and accumulation of snow dominate snow cover development in the Arctic and produce episodic high evaporative fluxes. Unfortunately, blowing snow processes are not presently incorporated in any hydrological or meteorological models. To demonstrate the application of simple algorithms that represent blowing snow processes, monthly snow accumulation, relocation and sublimation fluxes were calculated and applied in a spatially distributed manner to a 68-km 2 catchment in the low Arctic of north-western Canada. The model uses a Landsat-derived vegetation classification and a digital elevation model to segregate the basin into snow ‘sources’ and ‘sinks’. The model then relocates snow from sources to sinks and calculates in-transit sublimation loss. The resulting annual snow accumulation in specific landscape types was compared with the result of intensive surveys of snow depth and density. On an annual basis, 28% of annual snowfall sublimated from tundra surfaces whilst 18% was transported to sink areas. Annual blowing snow transport to sink areas amounted to an additional 16% of annual snowfall to shrub‐tundra and an additional 182% to drifts. For the catchment, 19.5% of annual snowfall sublimated from blowing snow, 5.8% was transported into the catchment and 86.5% accumulated on the ground. The model overestimated snow accumulation in the catchment by 6%. The application demonstrates that winter precipitation alone is insuAcient to calculate snow accumulation and that blowing snow processes and landscape patterns govern the spatial distribution and total accumulation of snow water equivalent over the winter. These processes can be modelled by relatively simple algorithms, and, when distributed by landscape type over the catchment, produce reasonable estimates of snow accumulation and loss in wind-swept regions. #1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Several possible effects of blowing snow on the atmospheric boundary layer are investigated, mostly within the general framework of the Prairie Blowing Snow Model (PBSM). The processes of snow saltation and suspension are first described. Variations to the drift density profile are tested and the effects of stratification and density variation calculations are evaluated. Despite high density gradients of blowing snow, stratification effects on turbulence and the velocity profiles can generally be neglected. However, with saltating or suspended snow in a constant shear stress layer, part of the shear stress is carried by the particles. A highly simplified, single-phase approach, based on the density variation of the air-snow mixture coupled to a simple turbulent stress-strain relationship, is used to illustrate this. Sublimation rates in a column of blowing snow are calculated using the PBSM and results are compared with those obtained with a modified formulation which incorporates a spectrum of sublimating particles of varying sizes at each height in a steady-state surface boundary layer and different specifications of the ventilation velocity.
