Root zone soil moisture (RZSM) is critical for water resource management, drought monitoring and sub-seasonal flood climate prediction. RZSM is not directly observable from space, but several RZSM products are available and widely used at global and continental scales. This paper presents a comprehensive quantitative evaluation of eight RZSM products over the Huai River Basin (HRB) in China. A direct validation is performed using observations from 58 in situ soil moisture stations from 1 April 2015 to 31 March 2020. Attention is drawn to the potential factors that increase the uncertainties of model-based RZSM, such as errors in atmospheric forcing (precipitation, air temperature), soil properties, and spatial scale mismatch. The results show that the Global Land Data Assimilation System Catchment Land Surface Model (GLDAS_CLSM) performs best among all RZSM products with the highest correlation coefficient (R) and the lowest unbiased root mean square error (ubRMSE): 0.69 and 0.018 m³ m-3, respectively. All RZSM products tend to overestimate in situ soil moisture values, except for the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) L4 product, which underestimates RZSM. The underestimation of Surface Soil Moisture (SSM) in SMOS L3, caused by underestimated physical surface temperature and overestimated ERA interim soil moisture, triggers the underestimation of RZSM in SMOS L4. The overestimation of RZSM by the other products can be explained by the overestimation of precipitation, the frequency of precipitation events (drizzle effects) and the underestimation of air temperature. In addition, the overestimation of soil clay content and the underestimation of soil sand content in different LSMs lead to higher soil moisture values. The intercomparison of the eight RZSM products shows that MERRA-2 and SMAP L4 RZSM have the highest correlation, which can be attributed to the fact that both products use the catchment land surface model and the atmospheric forcing provided by the Goddard Earth Observing System Model, version 5 (GEOS-5), although the versions differ slightly. The intercomparison of the eight RZSM products shows that MERRA-2 and SMAP L4 RZSM are the most correlated with one another. These products are based on the same LSM and on the same surface meteorological forcing generated from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) GEOS-5. In 2009, the International Soil Moisture Network (ISMN) was initiated as a community effort, funded by the European Space Agency, to serve as a centralised data hosting facility for globally available in situ soil moisture measurements (Dorigo et al., 2011a, b). The ISMN brings together in situ soil moisture measurements collected and freely shared by a multitude of organisations, harmonizes them in terms of units and sampling rates, applies advanced quality control, and stores them in a database. Users can freely retrieve the data from this database through an online web portal (https://ismn.earth). Meanwhile, the ISMN has evolved into the primary in situ soil moisture reference database worldwide, as evidenced by more than 3000 active users and over 1000 scientific publications referencing the data sets provided by the network. As of December 2020, the ISMN now contains data of 65 networks and 2678 stations located all over the globe, with a time period spanning from 1952 to present. The number of networks and stations covered by the ISMN is still growing and many of the data sets contained in the database continue to be updated. The main scope of this paper is to inform readers about the evolution of the ISMN over the past decade,including a description of network and data set updates and quality control procedures. A comprehensive review of existing literature making use of ISMN data is also provided in order to identify current limitations in functionality and data usage, and to shape priorities for the next decade of operations of this unique community-based data repository. This study demonstrates that LDAS-Monde, a global and offline Land Data Assimilation System (LDAS), that integrates satellite Earth observations into the ISBA (Interaction between Soil Biosphere and Atmosphere) Land Surface Model (LSM), is able to detect, monitor and forecast the impact of extreme weather on land surface states. LDAS-Monde jointly assimilates satellite derived Earth observations of surface soil moisture (SSM) and Leaf Area Index (LAI). It is run at global scale forced by ERA5 (LDAS_ERA5), the latest atmospheric reanalysis from the European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecast (ECMWF) over 2010-2018 leading to a 9-yr, ~ 0.25° × 0.25° spatial resolution reanalysis of Land Surface Variables (LSVs). This reanalysis is then used to compute anomalies of land surface states, in order to (i) detect regions exposed to extreme weather such as droughts and heatwave events and (ii) address specific monitoring and forecasting requirements of LSVs for those regions. In this study, LDAS_ERA5 analysis is first successfully evaluated worldwide using several satellite-based datasets (SSM, LAI, Evapotranspiration, Gross Primary Production and Sun Induced Fluorescence), as well as in situ measurements (SSM, evapotranspiration and river discharge). The added value of assimilating the soil moisture and LAI is demonstrated with respect to a model simulation (openloop, with no assimilation). Since the global LDAS_ERA5 has relatively coarse resolution, two higher spatial resolution experiments over two areas particularly affected by heatwaves and/or droughts in 2018 were run: North Western Europe and the Murray-Darling basin in South Eastern Australia. These experiments were forced with ECMWF Integrated Forecasting System (IFS) high resolution operational analysis (LDAS_HRES, ~ 0.10° × 0.10° spatial resolution) over 2017-2018, and both openloop and analysis experiments compared once again. Since the IFS is a forecast system, it also allows LDAS-Monde to be used in forecast mode, and we demonstrate the added value of initializing 4- and 8-day LDAS-HRES forecasts of the LSVs, from the LDAS-HRES assimilation run, compared to the openloop experiments. This is particularly true for LAI that evolves on longer time space than SSM and is more sensitive to initial conditions than to atmospheric forcing, even at an 8-day lead time. This confirms that slowly evolving land initial conditions are paramount for forecasting LSVs and that LDAS-systems should jointly analyse both soil moisture and vegetation states. This paper introduces an Ensemble Square Root Filter (EnSRF), a deterministic Ensemble Kalman Filter, to the context of assimilating jointly observations of surface soil moisture (SSM) and leaf area index (LAI) in the Land Data Assimilation System LDAS-Monde. By ingesting those satellite-derived products, LDAS-Monde constrains the Interaction between Soil, Biosphere and Atmosphere (ISBA) land surface model (LSM), coupled with the CNRM (Centre National de Recherches Météorologiques) version of the Total Runoff Integrating Pathways (CTRIP), to improve the reanalysis of land surface variables (LSVs). To evaluate its ability to produce improved LSVs reanalyses, the EnSRF is compared with the Simplified Extended Kalman, which has been routinely operated in LDAS-Monde, in a real case over the well-studied Euro-Mediterranean region at a 0.25° spatial resolution between 2008 and 2017. Both data assimilation approaches provide a positive impact on SSM and LAI estimates with respect to the model alone, putting them closer to assimilated observations. SEKF and EnSRF have a similar behaviour for LAI showing performances that are influenced by the vegetation type. For SSM, EnSRF estimates tend to be closer to observations than SEKF. The impact of assimilating SSM and LAI is also assessed on unobserved soil moisture in the other layers of soil. Unobserved control variables are updated in the EnSRF through covariances and correlations sampled from the ensemble linking them to observed control variables. In our context, a strong correlation between SSM and soil moisture in deeper soil layers is exhibited, as expected, showing seasonal patterns that vary geographically. Moderate correlation and anti-correlations are also noticed between LAI and soil moisture in spring, summer and autumn, their absolute value tending to be larger for soil moisture in root-zone areas, showing that assimilating LAI can have an influence on soil moisture. Finally an independent evaluation of both assimilation approaches is conducted using satellite estimates of evapotranspiration and gross primary production (GPP) as well as measures of river discharges from gauging stations. The EnSRF shows a systematic albeit moderate improvement for evapotranspiration and GPP and a highly positive impact on river discharges, while the SEKF exhibits a more contrasting performance. The European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecast (ECMWF) recently released a first 7-year segment of its latest atmospheric reanalysis: ERA-5 over 2010-2016. ERA-5 important changes relative to ERA-Interim former atmospheric reanalysis include a higher spatial and temporal resolution as well as a more recent model and data assimilation system. ERA-5 is foreseen to replace ERA-Interim reanalysis and one of the main goals of this study is to assess whether ERA5 can enhance the simulation performances with respect to ERA-Interim when it is used to force a Land-Surface-Model (LSM). To that end, both ERA-5 and ERA-Interim are used to force the ISBA (Interactions between Soil, Biosphere, and Atmosphere) LSM fully coupled with the Total Runoff Integrating Pathways (TRIP) scheme adapted for the CNRM (Centre National de Recherches Météorologiques) continental hydrological system within the SURFEX (SURFace Externalisée) modelling platform of Météo-France. Simulations cover the 2010-2016 period at half a degree spatial resolution. ERA-5 impact on the ISBA LSM with respect to ERA-Interim is assessed over a data-rich area: North America. A comprehensive evaluation of ERA-5 impact is conducted using remote sensing and in-situ observations covering a substantial part of the land surface storage and fluxes. The remote sensing observations include: (i) satellite-driven model estimates of land evapotranspiration, (ii) upscaled ground-based observations of gross primary productivity, (iii) satellite derived estimates of surface soil moisture as well as (iv) satellite derived estimates of Leaf Area Index. The in-situ observations cover (i) soil moisture, (ii) turbulent heat fluxes and Net Ecosystem Exchange (NEE), (iii) river discharges and (iv) snow depth. ERA-5 leads to a consistent improvement over ERA-Interim as verified with the use of these 8 independent observations of different land status and of the model simulations forced by ERA-5 when compared with ERAInterim.. This is particularly evident for the land surface variables linked to the terrestrial hydrological cycle while variables linked to vegetation are less impacted. Results also indicate that while precipitation provides, to a large extend, improvements in surface fields (e.g. large improvement in the representation of river discharge and snow depth), the other atmospheric variables play an important role, contributing to the overall improvements. These results highlight the importance of enhanced meteorological forcing quality provided by the new ERA-5 reanalysis, which will pave the way for a new generation of land-surface developments and applications. This work aims to assess the estimation of surface volumetric soil moisture (VSM) using the Global Navigation Satellite System Interferometric Reflectometry (GNSS-IR) technique. Year-round observations were acquired from a grassland site in southwestern France using an antenna consecutively placed at two contrasting heights above the ground surface (3.3 or 29.4 m). The VSM retrievals are compared with two independent reference datasets: in situ observations of soil moisture, and numerical simulations of soil moisture and vegetation biomass from the ISBA (Interactions between Soil, Biosphere and Atmosphere) land surface model. Scaled VSM estimates can be retrieved throughout the year removing vegetation effects by the separation of growth and senescence periods and by the filtering of the GNSS-IR observations that are most affected by vegetation. Antenna height has no significant impact on the quality of VSM estimates. Comparisons between the VSM GNSS-IR retrievals and the in situ VSM observations at a depth of 5 cm show a good agreement (R2 = 0.86 and RMSE = 0.04 m3 m-3). It is shown that the signal is sensitive to the grass litter water content and that this effect triggers differences between VSM retrievals and in situ VSM observations at depths of 1 cm and 5 cm, especially during light rainfall events. The understanding of land surface hydrology is critical for planning human activities involving freshwater resources. We assess how atmospheric forcing data uncertainties affect land surface model (LSM) simulations by means of an extensive evaluation exercise using a number of state-of-the-art remote sensing and station-based datasets. For this purpose, we use the CO2-responsive ISBA-A-gs LSM coupled the CNRM version of the Total Runoff Integrated Pathways (CTRIP) river routing model. We perform multi-forcing simulations over the Euro-Mediterranean area (25°-75.5° N, 11.5° W-62.5° E, at 0.5° resolution) from 1979 to 2012. The model is forced using four atmospheric datasets. Three of them are based on the ERA-Interim reanalysis (ERA-I). The fourth dataset is independent from ERA-Interim: PGF, developed at Princeton University. The hydrological impacts of atmospheric forcing uncertainties are assessed by comparing simulated surface soil moisture (SSM), leaf area index (LAI) and river discharge against observation-based datasets: SSM from the European Space Agency's Water Cycle Multi-mission Observation Strategy and Climate Change Initiative projects (ESA-CCI); LAI of the Global Inventory Modeling and Mapping Studies (GIMMS); and Global Runoff Data Centre (GRDC) river discharge. The atmospheric forcing data are also compared to reference datasets. Precipitation is the most uncertain forcing variable across datasets, while the most consistent are air temperature, and SW and LW radiation. At the monthly time scale, SSM and LAI simulations are relatively insensitive to forcing uncertainties. Some discrepancies with ESA-CCI appear to be forcing-independent and may be due to different assumptions underlying the LSM and the remote sensing retrieval algorithm. All simulations overestimate average summer and early autumn LAI. Forcing uncertainty impacts on simulated river discharge are larger on mean values and standard deviations than on correlations with GRDC data. Anomaly correlation coefficients are not inferior to those computed from raw monthly discharge time series, indicating that the model reproduces inter-annual variability fairly well. However, simulated river discharge time series generally feature larger variability compared to measurements. They also tend to overestimate winter-spring high flows and underestimate summer-autumn low flows. Considering that several differences emerge between simulations and reference data, which may not be completely explained by forcing uncertainty, we suggest several research directions. These range from further investigating the discrepancies between LSMs and remote sensing retrievals to developing new model components to represent physical and anthropogenic processes. This work aims to estimate soil moisture and vegetation characteristics from Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) data using direct and reflected signals by the land surface surrounding a ground-based antenna. Observations are collected over a rainfed wheat field in southwestern France. The retrievals are compared with two independent reference datasets: in situ observations of soil moisture and vegetation height, and numerical simulations from the ISBA (Interactions between Soil, Biosphere and Atmosphere) land surface model. Results show that changes in soil moisture mainly affect the multipath phase of the SNR data (assuming the relative antenna height is constant) with little change in the dominant period of the SNR data. Changes in vegetation height are more likely to modulate the SNR dominant period derived from a wavelet analysis. Surface volumetric soil moisture can be estimated (R2 = 0.73, RMSE = 0.014 m3 m-3) when the wheat is smaller than 20 cm. The quality of the estimates markedly decreases when the vegetation height increases. This is because the GNSS signal is less affected by the soil contribution. A wavelet analysis provides an accurate estimation of the wheat crop height (R2 = 0.98, RMSE = 6.2 cm). The latter correlates with modeled above-ground biomass of the wheat from stem elongation to ripening. It is found that the vegetation retrievals are sensitive to changes in plant height of at least one wavelength. A simple smoothing of the retrieved plant height allows an excellent matching to in situ observations, and to modeled above-ground biomass. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Soil Maximum Available Water Content (MaxAWC) is a key parameter in Land Surface Models (LSMs). However, being difficult to measure, this parameter is usually unavailable. This study assesses the feasibility of using a fifteen-year (1999-2013) time-series of satellite-derived low resolution observations of Leaf Area Index (LAI) to retrieve MaxAWC for rainfed croplands over France. LAI inter-annual variability is simulated using the CO2-responsive version of the Interactions between Soil, Biosphere and Atmosphere (ISBA) LSM for various values of MaxAWC. Optimal value is then selected by using (1) a simple inverse modelling technique, comparing simulated and observed LAI, (2) a more complex method consisting in integrating observed LAI in ISBA through a Land Data Assimilation System (LDAS) and minimizing LAI analysis increments. The evaluation of the MaxAWC retrievals from both methods is done using simulated annual maximum above-ground biomass (Bag) and straw cereal grain yield (GY) values from the Agreste French agricultural statistics portal, for 45 administrative units presenting a high proportion of straw cereals. Significant correlations (p-value < 0.01) between Bag and GY are found for up to 36 % and 53 % of the administrative units for the inverse modelling and LDAS tuning methods, respectively. It is found that the LDAS tuning experiment gives more realistic values of MaxAWC and maximum Bag than the inverse modelling experiment. Using low resolution LAI observations leads to an underestimation of MaxAWC and maximum Bag in both experiments.
