The significant interparticle forces observed between solar system dust grains upon desorption or sublimation of excess volatiles in simulated Martian or cometary environments are presently investigated, in order to more precisely define these mechanisms and to simulate the types of deposits thereby formed. Some classes of phyllosilicate mineral grains are noted to bond together to form a highly porous filamentary sublimate residue (FSR) exhibiting an exceptionally high tensile strength for its density; this may be important in its control of erosion and sublimation in Martian and cometary environments. It is concluded that FSR formation from clean mineral grains in water ice may be important in the formation of the Martian polar layered terrain.

The state and distribution of H2O molecules at high latitudes are evaluated numerically with emphasis on the effects of seasonal temperatures on the kinetics of H2O transport. The investigation is carried out with a thermal model for the regolith regions from the surface through the ice interface and an atmospheric model for the H2O vapor density at the surface as a function of latitude. Few differences are found in the state and distribution of H2O whether the regolith is composed of Montmorillonite or basalt. During an obliquity cycle, the average exchanged H2O mass is determined to be in the range 1-20 gr/sq cm over the planetary surface, with a total maximum exchanged volume of 1500 cu km of H2O. The exchanged mass would arise mainly from ground ice in the case of a basalt regolith and from adsorbed H2O with Montmorillonite. Finally, seasonal ice stabilization is expected to occur at latitudes above 40 deg when obliquities exceed 25 deg.

An analytical model is developed for the factors which changed the initial distribution and state of H2O, mainly trapped as subsurface ice, on Mars. A uniform initial ice distribution is assumed, and changes in ice layer thickness are calculated at discrete latitudes of Mars. The thermal/diffusive model used for the calculations accounts for variations in the solar luminosity, the planetary obliquity and eccentricity, with obliquity starting 3.5 Gyr ago, and insolation at various latitudes. Attention is given to variations in the albedo due to seasonal CO2 variations, in the regolith temperature, and in atmospheric pressure. Migration of H2O into and out of the regolith is a function of the H2O vapor temperature at the subsurface ice boundary and the annual average H2O at the base of the atmosphere. Projections of the ice thickness over 100 obliquity periods indicate that the intensity of the obliquity effects are latitudinally dependent. H2O atmospheric concentrations are projected to vary up to six orders of magnitude over an obliquity cycle.

Results are reported from experimental studies of the formation of ice mixed with mineral particles in an effort to simulate similar processes on natural surfaces such as at the Martian poles, on comet nuclei and on icy satellites. The study consisted of low-pressure, low-temperature sublimations of water ice from dilutions of water-clay (montmorillonite and Cabosil) dispersions of various component ratios. Liquid dispersions were sprayed into liquid nitrogen to form droplets at about -50 C. Both clay-water dispersions left a filamentary residue on the bottom of the Dewar after the water ice had sublimated off. The residue was studied with optical and SEM microscopy, the latter method revealing a high electrical conductivity in the residue. The results suggest that the sublimation of the water ice can leave a surface crust, which may be analogous to processes at the Martian poles and on comet nuclei. The process could proceed by the attachment of water molecules to salt crystals during the hottest part of the Martian year. The residue remaining was found to remain stable up to 370 C, be porous, and remain resilient, which could allow it to insulate ice bodies such as comets in space.

The present cometary activity model integrates feedback processes that involve the transport of heat, gas, and dust, as well as dust mantle development, and includes the effects of latitude, rotation, and spin axis orientation. Attention is given to the development, structural change, and distribution of dust mantles and their mutual interaction with ice surface temperature and gas and dust production. The results obtained suggest that an initially homogeneous, short period comet with a cosmic dust-to-water ice ratio, as well as typical orbit, rotation rate, and grain size distribution, would develop only a thin, less than 1 mm cyclic mantle at all points on the nucleus. Most H2O dust histories deduced from brightness data are noted to be in reasonable agreement with the model, allowing for uncertainty in radius and albedo. The exceptional case of Comet Encke is discussed.

Observations of the 4-micron SO2 band on Jupiter's satellite Io and laboratory measurements of SO2 frost are presented. The observations confirm the existence of a large longitudinal variation in band strength, but show no evidence of temporal changes. Comparison of the band position and shape in Io's spectrum with those in the laboratory frost's suggests that the bulk of the absorption on Io is due to frost, not adsorbed gas. The derived SO2 coverage is large enough to require that SO2 be present in most terrain types on Io and not just in the white plains unit. To reconcile the infrared observations that indicate large amoutns of SO2 with the ultraviolet observations of Voyager and IUE that show little, the SO2 must be mixed intimately with the sulfur (or other material) so that at each wavelength the darker component dominates the spectrum.

The effective grain size of a material on a planetary surface affects the strength of absorption features observed in the reflectance of a particulate surface. In the case of a planetary surface containing volatile ices, the absorption characteristics can change in connection with processes leading to a change in the grain size of the material. The present investigation is concerned with an evaluation regarding the occurrence of such processes and the implications for remote sensing applications. It is found that quantitative modeling of the kinetics of grain growth and destruction by thermal and nonthermal processes can provide a means to reconcile apparent optical paths in the volatile portions of planetary surfaces with the physical history of those surfaces. Attention is also given to conditions in the case of the Pluto/Triton system, Uranus and Saturnian satellites, and the Galilean system.

Available full-disk reflectance spectra of Io in the range 0.3 to 2.5 microns have been used to determine a surface compositional model for Io that is consistent with Io's other known chemical and physical properties. Results indicate that the surface of Io contains abundant dehydrated salts of high Na, Mg, and Fe(3+) content such as bloedite and ferrous iron sulfate. Experiments were performed studying the irradiation damage effects from low-energy proton bombardment, since Io is immersed in Jupiter's magnetosphere.

Implications of the Ar-40 content of the Martian atmosphere for Martian volatile history are considered. It is assumed that the potassium content of both Mars and earth is similar to that of normal chondrites, that Mars possesses a water content similar to that of normal chondrites, and that earth's water content is equal to or somewhat less than Mars'. A simple earth-analogous Mars degassing model is outlined in which the Martian surface volatile inventory is presumed to be identical to earth's, but scaled to the smaller mass and surface area of Mars. Physical storage of volatiles in the Martian regolith is examined along with the occurrence of volatile-containing mineral phases in the regolith, exospheric escape as a massive volatile sink, and the effect of the time history of degassing on the surface volatile inventory. Implications of earth's degassing history for Mars are assessed, and models describing the overall intensity of Mars degassing are presented. It is concluded that the maximum amounts of water and other volatiles that could be stored in the Martian regolith are marginally compatible with those required by the earth-analogous model, although a lower atmospheric Ar-40 concentration and regolith volatile inventory would be easier to reconcile with observational constraints.

A theoretical reconstruction of the history of Martian volatiles indicates that Mars probably possessed a substantial reducing atmosphere at the outset of its history, and that its present tenuous and more oxidized atmosphere is the result of extensive chemical evolution. As a consequence, it is probable that Martian atmospheric chemical conditions, now hostile with respect to abiotic organic synthesis in the gas phase, were initially favorable. Evidence indicating the chronology and degradational history of Martian surface features, surface mineralogy, bulk volatile content, internal mass distribution, and thermal history suggests that Mars catastrophically developed a substantial reducing atmosphere as the result of rapid accretion.
