In this study, we assess prey consumption by the marine mammal community in the northeast Atlantic [including 21 taxa, across three regions: (I) the Icelandic shelf, Denmark Strait, and Iceland Sea (ICE); (II) the Greenland and Norwegian Seas (GN); and (III) the Barents Sea (BS)], and compare mammal requirements with removals by fisheries. To determine prey needs, estimates of energetic requirements were combined with diet and abundance information for parameterizing simple allometric scaling models, taking uncertainties into account through bootstrapping procedures. In total, marine mammals in the ICE, GN, and BS consumed 13.4 [Confidence Interval (CI): 5.6–25.0], 4.6 (CI : 1.9–8.6), and 7.1 (CI : 2.8–13.8) million tonnes of prey year–1. Fisheries removed 1.55, 1.45, and 1.16 million tonnes year–1 from these three areas, respectively. While fisheries generally operate at significantly higher trophic levels than marine mammals, we find that the potential for direct competition between marine mammals and fisheries is strongest in the GN and weakest in the BS. Furthermore, our results also demonstrate significant changes in mammal consumption compared to previous and more focused studies over the last decades. These changes likely reflect both ongoing population recoveries from historic whaling and the current rapid physical and biological changes of these high-latitude systems. We argue that changing distributions and abundances of mammals should be considered when establishing fisheries harvesting strategies, to ensure effective fisheries management and good conservation practices of top predators in such rapidly changing systems. Harbour porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) bycatch for Norwegian commercial gillnet fisheries from 2006 to 2018 was estimated using a traditional ratio estimator and generalized additive linear mixed models, with weight of fish landed and number of gillnet hauls as proxies for fishing effort. Estimates were derived from data collected with a contracted reference fleet of small coastal vessels and scaled up to the whole fleet using data from landing statistics. Bycatch estimates exhibited large yearly variations, ranging from 1151 to 6144 porpoises per year. Bycatch estimates in 4 of the last 5 years were significantly less than in the preceding 2 years. The best ratio-based and model-based yearly bycatch estimates were 1580 porpoises [coefficient of variation, (C.V.) 0.10, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1302–1902] and 1642 porpoises (C.V. 0.15, 95% CI 1165–2142), respectively. About 75% of bycaught porpoises were taken in the cod (Gadus morhua) and monkfish (Lophius piscatorius) fisheries, while the rest were taken in a variety of different gillnet fisheries. Our results suggest that bycatch of harbour porpoise in Norwegian gillnet fisheries has been unsustainable for several of the last 13 years but are currently within international bycatch limits due to a recent reduction in monkfish fishing effort. Unprecedented and rapid changes are ongoing in northern high latitude, marine ecosystems, due to climate warming. Species distributions and abundances are changing, altering both ecosystem structure and dynamics. At the same time, human impacts are increasing. Less sea ice opens for the opportunity of more petroleum-related activities, shipping and tourism. Fisheries are moving into previously unfished habitats, targeting more species across more trophic levels. There is a need for ecosystem-based fisheries management (EBFM) and ecosystem-based management (EBM) to take the rapid, climate driven changes into account. Recently, there has been much development in qualitative, semi-quantitative, and quantitative scientific approaches to support EBFM and EBM. Here, we present some of these approaches, and discuss how they provide opportunities for advancing EBFM and EBM in one high-latitude system, namely the Barents Sea. We propose that advancing EBFM and EBM is more about adding tools to the toolbox than replacing tools, and to use the tools in coordinated efforts to tackle the increasing complexities in scientific support to management. Collaborative and participatory processes among stakeholders and scientists are pivotal for both scoping and prioritizing, and for efficient knowledge exchange. Finally, we argue that increasing uncertainty with increasing complexity is fundamental to decision making in EBFM and EBM and needs to be handled, rather than being a reason for inaction or irrelevance. Yet, such environmental impacts on stock dynamics, and hence stock production, are rarely included in applied fisheries management. To test the utility of taking ecosystem information into account in management decisions requires efficient tools. We propose a simulation framework for evaluating fisheries management schemes that use environmental information as part of the decision basis. A key feature is to link environmental signals to parameters in functions that define the population dynamics. This allows a direct incorporation of environmental drivers into models of population dynamic processes and emphasizes the need for a quantitative understanding of the influence of environmental drivers on such processes. The utility of the simulation framework is demonstrated through a worked example with different management scenarios, where decisions to increase or decrease the exploitation rely on environmental indicators only, or also on information on stock abundance. In this example, a management that was based on indicators only, without updated measures of the state of the stock itself, failed to respond adequately to changes in stock productivity. Marine mammals are important players in the Barents Sea ecosystem but their structural role in the foodweb has been little explored. We compare foodweb-related characteristics within and between phylogenetic groups for 19 marine mammals. As a group, they directly connect to the most central species (i.e cod and haddock) in the Barents Sea (i.e. cod and haddock) and consume over half of the available species. Pinnipeds are the most homogenous phylogenetic group with high omnivory and high prey richness. Mysticetes are split between well-connected species with high omnivory like the humpback whale, and peripheral specialists like the blue whale. Based on foodweb-derived indices some species consistently cluster together forming two groups, suggesting topological redundancy within them. One is dominated by Arctic seals and the other includes most of the baleen whales. Marine mammals generally contribute to network modularity as their trophic links are mainly within their own module. However, Atlantic species such as the grey seal act as a module connector decreasing modularity. This might negatively affect ecosystem robustness with perturbation effects spreading further and quicker in the foodweb. In the Arctic reaches of the Barents Sea, climate warming is likely to bring about extensive changes in the foodweb structure through a redistribution of species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Copepods from the genus Calanus are crucial prey for fish, seabirds and mammals in the Nordic and Barents Sea ecosystems. The objective of this study is to determine the contribution of Calanus species to the mesozooplankton biomass in the Barents Sea. We analyse an extensive dataset of Calanus finmarchicus, Calanus glacialis, and Calanus hyperboreus, collected at various research surveys over a 30-year period. Our results show that the Calanus species are a main driver of variation in the mesozooplankton biomass in the Barents Sea, and constitutes around 80% of the total. The proportion of Calanus decreases at low zooplankton biomass, possibly due to a combination of advective processes (low C. finmarchicus in winter) and size selective foraging. Though the Calanus species co-occur in most regions, C. glacialis dominates in the Arctic water masses, while C. finmarchicus dominates in Atlantic waters. The larger C. hyperboreus has considerably lower biomass in the Barents Sea than the other Calanus species. Stages CIV and CV have the largest contribution to Calanus species biomass, whereas stages CI-CIII have an overall low impact on the biomass. In the western area of the Barents Sea, we observe indications of an ongoing borealization of the zooplankton community, with a decreasing proportion of the Arctic C. glacialis over the past 20 years. Balanced fishing proposes a considerable change to current fisheries management to increase overall biomass harvested while reducing the ecosystem impacts of large-scale fisheries. However, to date, the work to a large degree has focused on simplified models, which exclude much of the variability in real ecosystems, as well as basing harvesting rates on a perfect, but unrealistic, knowledge on stock productivity. Furthermore, the published studies have avoided examining the practicalities of implementing balanced fishing in a real world. This has resulted in a gap that remains to be overcome before balanced fishing can be considered a viable management strategy for large marine ecosystems.Wediscuss variability in recruitment, in biology and life history characteristics, in data quality, and in fishing practice and management, and their implications for implementation of balanced fishing, using examples from the Barents Sea. We try to outline the complexities that need to be investigated as a precursor tomoving balanced fishing from an academic exercise to a practical management scheme. Given the difficulties in moving to "full" balanced fishing, we highlight the importance of investigating to what extent benefits can be gained by implementing only the most achievable parts of a balanced fishing regime. During the past four decades, fishing pressure and climatic conditions have varied greatly in the BS, and stock levels have fluctuated substantially. Trophic control has changed from mainly bottom–up to top–down, then back to mainly bottom–up. No clear evidence for persistent ecological regimes was found. The past decade has been the warmest on record, with large stocks of demersal and pelagic fish, and increasing abundances of krill and shrimp. Except perhaps for the rather less-studied Arctic species, the short-term effect of the recent warming has been positive for BS stocks.
