To test the reliability of morphological keys for identifying two freshwater eel species,Anguilla celebesensisandA. interioris, mitochondrial DNA sequences were analyzed. Of eleven specimens examined, five were from Sulawesi and six from New Guinea. Specimens were morphologically identified as tenA. celebesensisand oneA. interioris. However, mitochondrial DNA sequence analysis indicated the existence of two genetically distinct groups, which corresponded exactly to the sampling localities. This contradiction might be attributable to inadequate descriptions of the anguillid species, for which intra-specific variations have been significantly underestimated. New approaches such as molecular analysis, are necessary for species’ identification of freshwater eels.

Abstract: Early formation of otolith was studied on artificially hatched larvae of the Japanese eel,Anguilla japonica. Newly hatched larvae had a pair of sagittae which were flat and subelliptical with 8.3 μm in mean diameter. The diameter of the sagitta increased linearly with age. No growth increments were observed in the sagitta at hatching, while larvae which were 2, 4 and 6 days old had on average 2.1, 3.6 and 6.0 increments, respectively. The number of the increments (Y) and the age in days after hatching (X) showed a close linear relationship (Y=0.96X+ 0.06, r = 0.913, n = 40), suggesting daily deposition of sagittal increments. In 95 % of the field-caught elvers of this species, a distinct dark ring (check) with the diameter of 6–12 μm was found around the nucleus of the sagitta. This seems to be a “hatch check” deposited at hatching, since its diameter roughly agreed with that of the sagitta in the newly-hatched larvae. Possibly, the number of the increments outside the hatch check represents the age of the fish in days.

Abstract: Embryonic and larval development of the pike eel,Muraenesox cinereus, are described following natural fertilization in the laboratory. Eggs are pelagic and spherical with diameters from 1.8 to 2.1 mm and have a colorless, transparent chorion and numerous oil globules. Hatching occurs 36 hours after spawning at a water temperature of 25°C. Newly-hatched larvae are 5.8 mm in mean TL, and the number of myomeres averages 86. Absorption of the yolk is completed 8 days after hatching, at 9–10 mm TL. Larvae survive for 10 days without food supply. At this time they are 11.2 mm in mean TL and have 97 + 55=152 myomeres, which is a diagnostic character of this species. They have large eyes and well-developed jaws with sharp teeth.
