The Last decade saw significant growth in the digital terrestrial television (DTT) subscribers. The High peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) of the transmitted signal is implied by the large fluctuations in its amplitude, which is a serious issue in the contemporary and next generation DTT broadcasting systems. These large fluctuations prevent feeding the high power amplifier (HPA) at an operating point near its non-linear (NL) saturation region, thereby lowering its power efficiency. For a better future, energy-efficient green communications is the need of hour. This paper focuses on digital predistortion (DPD), which is among the widely used techniques for HPA linearization in order to minimize the NL effects. DPD technique requires a feedback signal. This paper proposes a novel adding signal-based digital predistortion, where the output of the HPA is gradually linearized by adding a signal at the input in an iterative manner. By Taylor series approximation, the DPD problem can be posed as a convex one. We prove that a tighter upper bound exists for the convergence factor and instead of directly solving the convex problem, we pick a convergence factor value within its bounds that offers a good trade-off between convergence speed and residual error value. Due to the great demand of throughput and reliability for multimedia applications in Fifth Generation (5G) networks, many broadcasting systems adopt the Millimeter Wave (mmWave) technology to address the lack of the spectrum resources. As one of 5G-PPP projects, Internet of Radio Light (IoRL) project adopts 40GHz mmWave band to support a high-speed and stable Ultra-High-Definition (UHD) television broadcasting service in the indoor environment. Because of the high frequency property, mmWave bands usually suffers from the high path loss and the penetration loss. Thus, in order to overcome these issues, directional antennas are employed to provide additional power gain while increasing transmission distance. However, the mmWave with directional antennas brings additional problems, such as limited transmission angle and more multipath effects. Therefore, in this paper, for better understanding of impact factors on the signal quality and transmission coverage of the directional 40GHz mmWave band in the indoor environment, a measurement campaign is introduced in detail and the channel characteristics are measured and analysed in varying cases. The mainly concerned characteristics are path loss, shadow fading, average Power Delay Profile (PDP), Root-Mean-Square (RMS) delay spread, arrival rate and coherence bandwidth. All Measured characteristic values are summarised in three tables at the end of this paper. Besides of these, as a reference of channel analysis and a metric of signal quality and effective coverage, Error Vector Magnitude (EVM) of received signal in each case is measured and discussed. For multi-user multiple-input-multiple-output (MU-MIMO) system, transmitter utilizes a pre-equalizer based precoding to cancel inter-stream interference for parallel transmission with the aid of accurate feedback of channel state information (CSI) from all receivers. The correct power scaling factor, which normalizes the symbols power of precoding to be a constant one, is required at each receiver. Due to CSI error and limitation of feed-forward link, the received inaccurate power scaling factor will shrink or expand the received constellation points which severely degrades the performance of MIMO system. In this paper, using nonlinear vector perturbation (VP) and linear zero-forcing (ZF) precoding, we analyze the impact of inaccurate power scaling factor on the performance of a MIMO precoding system. The analyzed results show that the mismatched modulo size from inaccurate power scaling factor severely degrades the performance of the VP system, especially for high order M-QAM modulation. In addition, the performance degradation is strongly related with the distribution of representation points for each M-QAM symbol. For linear ZF precoding, the performance loss from the shrinked or expanded constellation points is severe for system using high order M-QAM. In addition, to alleviate the performance degradation, we propose a VP system using partial perturbation points (PPP). By limiting the region of redundant points with vector perturbation for partial M-QAM symbols, the performance degradation due to the inaccurate power scaling factor can be alleviated. This paper presents the research and implementation of a China Digital Radio (CDR) experimental network in Hubei, China with two FM-CDR transmitting stations and four FM-band channels. To study the coverage discontinuity problem in a large service area, the experimental network employs an intelligent networking solution that incorporates multiple service channels carrying Broadcast and Data Services (BADS) and a Common-Regional-Information Channel (CRIC) carrying both service data and system information. The electronic service guide (ESG) carried by CRIC can inform the receivers about the available contents from current and adjacent stations, which can significantly improve the service quality in the overlapping areas, especially under mobile reception environment. Two RF tuners are used in the receiving terminals to access the CRIC, and the BADS channel, respectively. This paper first presents the frequency analysis and coverage tests of the experimental network, and then summarizes the coverage performances with different transmission parameter combinations. Currently video streaming in heterogeneous network environments is affected by limited network bandwidth availability and consequent low and variable user Quality of Experience (QoE) levels. In particular, for the case of live video streaming, a very high number of end-clients request content at the same time, generating huge concurrent traffic, and putting pressure on the existing network infrastructure. An approach which helps address this issue is deployment of emerging edge computing technologies to smooth the live streaming traffic and improve QoE by adapting client bitrates and caching content at the edge server. In this context, this paper proposes a novel QoE-aware Adaptive Video bitrate Aggregation scheme for HTTP live streaming based on smart edge computing (QAVA). As an intelligent proxy server, a “smart edge” which deploys QAVA aggregates all the traffic requested by clients for the same live streaming service and adapts their bitrates based on network conditions, client states and video characteristics. The adaptation is performed based on a Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL)-based algorithm, which is also proposed. The QAVA DRL algorithm is trained and modeled based on a real client experience dataset. The experimental evaluation results presented in this paper show how QAVA outperforms other state-of-the-art adaptive bitrate algorithms in terms of average QoE and QoE fairness. In this paper, simple methodologies of deep learning application to conventional multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication systems are presented. The deep learning technologies with deep neural network (DNN) structure, emerging technologies in various engineering areas, have been actively investigated in the field of communication engineering as well. In the physical layer of conventional communication systems, there are practical challenges of application of DNN: calculating complex number in DNN and designing proper DNN structure for a specific communication system model. This paper proposes and verifies simple solutions for the difficulty. First, we apply a basic DNN structure for signal detection of one-tap MIMO channel. Second, convolutional neural network (CNN) and recurrent neural network (RNN) structures are presented for MIMO system with multipath fading channel. Our DNN structure for one-tap MIMO channel can achieve the optimal maximum likelihood detection performance, and furthermore, our CNN and RNN structures for multipath fading channel can detect the transmitted signal properly. Multi-Media applications are amongst the most demanding services, requiring high amounts of network capacity and computational resources for synchronous audio-visual streaming with high quality. Gaming streaming is one of the most demanding of these media applications. Recent technological advances in the 5G domain, precisely Network Function Virtualization (NFV) and Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC), unlock media industries’ potential by offering high-quality media services through dynamic and efficient resource allocation with low latency. This work presents a multi-site gaming streaming use case implemented over an end-to-end 5G-enabled platform provided by the EU H2020 5G-PPP 5G EVE project. Furthermore, we present the executed use case experiment scenarios to validate the use case performance following a set of defined Quality of Experience(QoE)-related Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). In particular, this paper discusses the design workflow and orchestration of the multi-site gaming streaming use case across two 5G EVE sites (i.e., Spain and Greece), providing a detailed description of the network function applications and resources utilized for the use case. Subsequently, leveraging the 5G EVE monitoring platform, this paper elaborates on the executed experiment scenarios that provide the defined KPI metrics data. Non-uniform constellation (NUC) is an advanced technology in digital terrestrial television broadcasting (DTTB) systems to reduce the shapping gap of BICM capacity to Shannon theoretical limit and provide performance gain. Two-dimensional NUC (2D-NUC) is a kind of NUC providing more gain but bringing higher demapping complexity at the receiver, which hinders its application prospects, especially in power limited systems. This paper proposes three novel demapping algorithms with reduced complexity for low to medium code rate 2D-NUCs in Advanced Television Systems Committee 3rd Generation (ATSC 3.0) standard. The proposed algorithms are based on the introduction of virtual points, the strategy of condensed symbols reduction and some reasonable approximations. There is a trade-off between the demapping complexity and performance. These three algorithms have different degrees of reduction in complexity and performance degradation, so they accommodate for different practical requirements. Low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes are widely used as error correction codes in new generation digital TV standards, such as the second generation of terrestrial digital video broadcasting standard (DVB-T2), Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) 3.0, etc. The nonlinear belief propagation (BP) algorithm has excellent decoding performance for LDPC codes, but is often simplified in hardware implementations by linear min-sum (MS) algorithm due to its high complexity. This simplification also leads to over-estimation problems, which can be corrected by adding factors in conventional algorithms (e.g., normalized min-sum (NMS), offset min-sum (OMS), and variable scaling normalized min-sum (VMS) algorithms). However, the correction factors of these modified MS algorithms cannot adapt to different channels and modulations, and the performance needs further improvement. In this paper, the concepts of over-estimation value (OEV) and over-estimation rate (OER) are introduced to describe the over-estimation problem of the MS algorithm. Then, under the guidance of OEV and OER, a polygonal line min-sum (PMS) algorithm with correction factors adapted to different channels and modulations is proposed according to LLR distribution. Following the properties of OEV and OER, PMS algorithm is further simplified into Simplified PMS (SPMS) algorithm. LDPC codes from ATSC 3.0 are adopted in this paper to evaluate SPMS algorithm in comparison with the conventional algorithms. Extensive simulation results show that the SPMS algorithm for ATSC 3.0 LDPC decoder has at most 1.61dB, 0.24dB and 0.36dB gain over NMS, OMS and VMS algorithms respectively when frame error rate (FER) is at 10−4 level over additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel with QPSK modulation. More importantly, the simulation results show that the SPMS algorithm can achieve much better performance than these modified MS algorithms over AWGN and Rayleigh channel with higher-order modulations or under limited maximum iteration number. In this paper, we introduce spatial modulation (SM) in the layered division multiplexing (LDM) system for digital TV scenarios. To analyze the achievable spectral efficiency (SE) performance of the proposed SM-LDM system, we calculate its mutual information (MI) through the Monte Carlo method. Considering both Gaussian and finite alphabet inputs, we derive the MI’s computational-efficient lower bounds as well as their asymptotic values. Signed quadrature spatial modulation (SQSM) was recently introduced to enhance the throughput of spatial modulation (SM) in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. This strategy involves independently transmitting the real and imaginary components of a symbol and its inverse from four independent antennas. In this paper, an extended SQSM (ESQSM) system is proposed. It combines $K$ SQSM constellations and transmits them from the same transmit-antenna set with the aim of realizing a $K$ -fold improvement in the spectral efficiency (SE). The proposed ESQSM employs the average power of the $K$ SQSM constellations as an additional dimension for transmission. Performance of the proposed ESQSM surpasses that of other state-of-art SM systems such as the QSM, DSM, IQSM SQSM, and EQSM by 13 dB, 11 dB, 10.55 dB, 10 dB, and 6.8 dB, respectively. In this paper, we also propose an efficient ESQSM with a multi-user (ESQSM-MU) system inspired by the ESQSM ability in increasing the SE. The proposed ESQSM-MU system offers a significant bit error rate (BER) improvement and a higher capacity (i.e., $5K$ -users) compared to the current non orthogonal multiple access-SM (NOMA-SM) and SM-assisted multi-antenna NOMA (SM-AMA-NOMA) systems. Moreover, an efficient low-complexity detector is introduced for the ESQSM signal detection, promising a 91.2% reduction in the computational complexity of ESQSM and ESQSM-MU systems relative to the maximum likelihood (ML) with a trivial loss in performance. Broadcasting and broadband network is moving towards integration and LTE-based 5G terrestrial broadcast is now researched in Release 16 in Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) standardization meetings. However, the work scope of LTE-based 5G terrestrial broadcast focuses on specifying new numerologies and some minor improvement on cell acquisition subframe, which is insufficient. In this paper, limitations in coding and modulation schemes of LTE-based 5G terrestrial broadcast system, e.g., Turbo codes and Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM), are detailedly analyzed. To further enhance the spectrum efficiency of LTE-based 5G terrestrial broadcast system, LDPC (Low Density Parity Check) codes from 5G new radio (NR) standard and newly designed non-uniform constellations (NUCs) are adopted in this paper to replace Turbo codes and QAM respectively. Extensive simulations and complexity analysis show that the proposed LDPC coding and NUC modulation scheme, either standalone or combined, can provide significant performance gain over Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) and Tapped Delayline (TDL) channels, without additional complexity. To summarize, this paper investigates the weakness of the coding and modulation schemes in current systems and provides potential alternatives for the enhanced future broadcast in 3GPP standard. In this paper, the scheme that combines LDM (Layered Division Multiplexing) with the FDM (Frequency Division Multiplexing) scheme based on BST-OFDM (Band Segmented Transmission - Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) is proposed for the next-generation DTTB (Digital Terrestrial Television Broadcasting). The proposed LDM-BST-OFDM scheme provides a more effective frequency utilization of the stream for fixed reception. The performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated by computer simulations where the effectiveness of proposed scheme for fixed reception is shown. Although LDM-BST-OFDM improves the performance, dedicated receivers that can demodulate symbols multiplexed by LDM are required. In this paper, LDM-BST-OFDM using punctured LDPC code is proposed, which can decode the stream for fixed reception even if symbols multiplexed by LDM are not demodulated. With the proliferation of portable devices, the exponential growth of the global mobile traffic brings great challenges to the traditional communication networks and the traditional wireless communication technologies. In this context, converged networks and cache-based data offloading have drawn more and more attention based on the strong correlation of services. This paper proposes a novel popular services pushing and caching scheme by using converged overlay networks. The most popular services are pushed by terrestrial broadcasting networks. And they are cached in ${n}$ router-nodes with limited cache sizes. Each router-node only interconnects with its neighbor nodes. Users are served through the router’s WiFi link. If the services requested are cached in the routers, the user can be immediately responded; otherwise, the requests can be responded through the link from cellular stations to the router. In the proposed scheme, the cache size of the router, the maximum number of requests each router can serve, and the whole-time delay are limited. Three node-selecting and dynamic programming algorithms are adopted to maximize the equivalent throughput. Analytical and numerical results demonstrate that the proposed scheme is very effective. AV1 is an open-source video coding technique developed by Alliance for Open Media (AOMedia). Many powerful coding tools introduced to AV1 has made its encoding time significantly increased. In this paper, we aim at simplifying the AV1 encoder by facilitating selection of some coding tools depending on users’ specific application preference. We firstly design a coding tool OFF-test to evaluate coding performance of intra, inter, and in-loop filter coding tools in AV1 encoder in order to define a criterion to evaluate the importance of each coding tool by measuring the Bjøntegaard delta bit rate (BDBR) loss and time saving (TS) when each coding tool is turned OFF. Furthermore, the importance of each coding tool is analyzed based on the predefined criterion. Lastly, we suggest two intra coding tool selection methods, three inter coding tool selection methods, and three overall coding tool selection methods to simplify AV1 encoder based on users’ preference of quality-priority or low-complexity-priority. Experimental results show that our proposed low-complexity-priority selection method saves 30.72% of encoding time with only 0.91% loss in BDBR sense, and the quality-priority selection method saves 4.64% of encoding time with 0.02% BDBR loss. To improve the coding performance of HEVC, tools and structures are included that also increase the computational complexity of encoding, especially for the mode decisions in the coding unit (CU), which is a structural element in the HEVC. For each CU size, the HEVC encoder performs mode decision and motion estimation using all prediction unit (PU) types and incurs massive computational burdens. In this paper, we investigate the depth correlation between the current and the collocated CU to avoid irrelevant CU procedure and truncate some PU predictions as a result. We also investigate the relationship of the rate-distortion (RD) costs after the Merge/SKIP prediction. By analyzing different CU sizes and quantization parameters, we build a mathematical model to represent the relationship for the RD costs after the Merge/SKIP prediction with an adaptive termination of the CU procedure. In addition, the relationship of the RD costs after the Merge/SKIP prediction and 2N \boldsymbol \times 2\textN mode is also explored. Search range reduction is used to further speed up our algorithm. Experimental results show that our algorithm can reduce the coding time by up to 80%, and provide average coding time savings of 46%, 45%, and 52%, for low delay B, low delay P, and random access configurations, respectively. Moreover, the proposed algorithm is able to maintain coding performance similar to HM 11.0. The proposed scheme outperforms previous work in terms of both the coding speed and the RD performance.
