Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) technology is promising to enhance wireless communications services by providing smart radio environment. In this paper, we investigate the RIS aided cellular networks with device-to-device (D2D) users, and maximize the sum of the transmission rate of the D2D communications and the cellular networks from a new perspective. In addition to solving the typical resource allocation problems for D2D communications, this paper further optimize the wireless environment by adjusting the position and phase shift of the RIS. To solve this non-convex problem, we propose a novel decentralized double deep Q-network (D3QN) framework for the resource allocation at users and a centralized DDQN for RIS optimization at the base station (BS), which are verified to achieve the near-optimal performance with lower complexity and enhanced robustness. Simulation results illustrate that the proposed framework can achieve higher transmission rates compared to benchmarks, meanwhile meeting the quality of service (QoS) requirements at the BS and D2D users. In this paper, we consider deploying an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) to enhance the downlink (DL) energy transfer and uplink (UL) information transmission efficiency for secure multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless powered communication networks (WPCNs). We aim to maximize the secrecy throughput of all users by jointly optimizing the DL/UL time allocation, the energy transmit covariance matrix of hybrid access point (AP), the information transmit beamforming matrix of users and the phase shifts of IRS in DL/UL, subject to constraints of energy/information transmit power at the hybrid AP/users and that of unit-modulus IRS phase shifts for DL/UL. To tackle the non-convex problem, we first transform the original problem into an equivalent form based on the mean-square error (MSE) method given time allocation, and then apply the alternating algorithm to update the optimization variables iteratively. Specifically, the energy covariance matrix and the information beamforming matrix are obtained based on the dual subgradient method. For the IRS phase shifts, we investigate two IRS beamforming reflection setups, namely different DL/UL IRS beamforming and identical DL/UL IRS beamforming. For the former case, the second-order cone programming technique and the Majorization-Minimization algorithm/element by element iterative algorithm are applied to obtain the DL and UL IRS phase shifts, respectively. For the latter case, the IRS phase shifts are obtained by the successive convex approximation technique. To further reduce the computational complexity of the single-user system, we derive the closed-form solutions of IRS phase shifts in each iteration for the two different reflection setups. In this paper, we consider an uplink heterogeneous cloud radio access network (H-CRAN), where a macro base station (BS) coexists with many remote radio heads (RRHs). For cost savings, only the BS is connected to the baseband unit (BBU) pool via fiber links. The RRHs, however, are associated with the BBU pool through wireless fronthaul links, which share the spectrum resource with radio access networks. Due to the limited capacity of fronthaul, the compress-and-forward scheme is employed, such as point-to-point compression or Wyner–Ziv coding. Different decoding strategies are also considered. This paper aims to maximize the uplink ergodic sum-rate (SR) by jointly optimizing quantization noise matrix and bandwidth allocation between radio access networks and fronthaul links, which is a mixed time-scale issue. To reduce computational complexity and communication overhead, we introduce an approximation problem of the joint optimization problem based on large-dimensional random matrix theory, which is a slow time-scale issue, because it only depends on statistical channel information. Finally, an algorithm based on Dinkelbach’s algorithm is proposed to find the optimal solution to the approximate problem. In summary, this paper provides an economic solution to the challenge of constrained fronthaul capacity and also provides a framework with less computational complexity to study how bandwidth allocation and fronthaul compression can affect the SR maximization problem. In this paper, a novel intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-assisted wireless powered communication network (WPCN) architecture is proposed for power-constrained Internet-of-Things (IoT) smart devices, where IRS is exploited to improve the performance of WPCN under imperfect channel state information (CSI). We formulate a hybrid access point (HAP) transmit energy minimization problem by jointly optimizing time allocation, HAP energy beamforming, receiving beamforming, user transmit power allocation, IRS energy reflection coefficient and information reflection coefficient under the imperfect CSI and non-linear energy harvesting model. On account of the high coupling of optimization variables, the formulated problem is a non-convex optimization problem that is difficult to solve directly. To address the above-mentioned challenging problem, alternating optimization (AO) technique is applied to decouple the optimization variables to solve the problem. Specifically, through AO, time allocation, HAP energy beamforming, receiving beamforming, user transmit power allocation, IRS energy reflection coefficient and information reflection coefficient are divided into three sub-problems to be solved alternately. The difference-of-convex (DC) programming is used to solve the non-convex rank-one constraint in solving IRS energy reflection coefficient and information reflection coefficient. Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) are envisioned to be a disruptive wireless communication technique that is capable of reconfiguring the wireless propagation environment. In this paper, we study a free-space RIS-assisted multiple-input single-output (MISO) communication system in far-field operation. To maximize the received power from the physical and electromagnetic nature point of view, a comprehensive optimization, including beamforming of the transmitter, phase shifts of the RIS, orientation and position of the RIS is formulated and addressed. After exploiting the property of line-of-sight (LoS) links, we derive closed-form solutions of beamforming and phase shifts. For the non-trivial RIS position optimization problem in arbitrary three-dimensional space, a dimensional-reducing theory is proved. The simulation results show that the proposed closed-form beamforming and phase shifts approach the upper bound of the received power. The robustness of our proposed solutions in terms of the perturbation is also verified. Moreover, the RIS significantly enhances the performance of the mmWave/THz communication system. Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), a recently introduced technology for future wireless communication systems, enhances the spectral and energy efficiency by intelligently adjusting the propagation conditions between base stations (BSs) and mobile equipments (MEs). An RIS consists of many low-cost passive reflecting elements that are optimized to improve the quality of the received signal. In this paper, we study the problem of power control at the BS and RIS optimization for application to physical-layer broadcasting. Our goal is to minimize the transmit power at the BS by jointly designing the transmit beamforming at the BS and the phase shifts of the passive elements at the RIS. Furthermore, to help validate the proposed optimization methods, we derive lower bounds to quantify the average transmit power at the BS as a function of the number of MEs, the number of RIS elements, and the number of antennas at the BS. The simulation results demonstrate that the average transmit power at the BS is close to the lower bound in an RIS-aided system, and is significantly lower than the average transmit power in conventional schemes without an RIS. Low-latency communication is expected to play a key role in the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). Although there has been considerable effort on reducing latency, few attention has been focused on the low-latency transmission of distortion-tolerant data, e.g. IIoT’s analog samples, over fading channels. In this paper, we present a cross-layer approach to jointly adapt the transmission power, rate, and compression ratio based on the instantaneous buffer and channel states. In particular, to minimize the average delay under both average power and distortion constraints, we formulate a Constrained Markov Decision Process (CMDP) with multi-dimensional state and action spaces. A novel solution is then presented by judiciously decomposing the multi-dimensional CMDP into a deterministic hierarchical optimization consisting of a linear programming and a convex optimization problem. Furthermore, we show the optimality of a threshold-based scheduling policy that highly reduces the complexity and present an optimal delay-power-distortion tradeoff that characterizes a fundamental performance tradeoff between the physical, network, and application layers. The joint lossy compression and power allocation scheme realizes a deep cross-layer optimization of source coding, queuing control, and wireless transmission, which outperforms the traditional cross-layer design consisting of only two layers, not to mention layered protocols. The emergence of interference alignment (IA) as a degrees-of-freedom optimal strategy motivates the need to investigate whether IA can be leveraged to aid conventional network utility maximization algorithms, which are typically only capable of finding locally optimal solutions. To test the usefulness of IA in this context, this paper proposes a two-stage optimization framework for the downlink of a $G$ -cell multi-antenna network with $K$ users/cell. The first stage of the proposed framework focuses on nulling interference from a set of dominant interferers using IA, while the second stage optimizes transmit and receive beamformers to maximize a network-wide utility using the IA solution as the initial condition. Further, this paper establishes a set of new feasibility results for partial IA that can be used to guide the number of dominant interferers to be nulled in the first stage. Through simulations on specific topologies of a cluster of base stations, it is observed that the impact of IA depends on the choice of the utility function and the presence of out-of-cluster interference. In the absence of out-of-cluster interference, the proposed framework outperforms straightforward optimization when maximizing the minimum rate, while providing marginal gains when maximizing sum rate. Cognitive radio (CR) is an effective solution to improve the spectral efficiency (SE) of wireless communications by allowing the secondary users (SUs) to share spectrum with primary users (PUs). Meanwhile, intelligent reflecting surface (IRS), also known as reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), has been recently proposed as a promising approach to enhance energy efficiency (EE) of wireless communication systems through intelligently reconfiguring the channel environment. To improve both SE and EE, in this paper, we introduce multiple IRSs to a downlink multiple-input single-output (MISO) CR system, in which a single SU coexists with a primary network with multiple PU receivers (PU-RXs). Our design objective is to maximize the achievable rate of SU subject to a total transmit power constraint on the SU transmitter (SU-TX) and interference temperature constraints on the PU-RXs, by jointly optimizing the beamforming at SU-TX and the reflecting coefficients at each IRS. Both perfect and imperfect channel state information (CSI) cases are considered in the optimization. Recent studies of single-cell two-user networks have shown that a higher network throughput is achieved by using a common message to be decoded by both users and conveying partial information for both users, rather than using the common message to convey the entire information for one of the two users. The latter is essentially the conventional non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA), which performs better than orthogonal multiple access (OMA) only under users’ dissimilar channel conditions. Unlike NOMA, the former performs consistently better than OMA. This paper generalizes such a signaling strategy to a general multi-cell multiuser network, which leads to a new NOMA approach (called n-NOMA) in which each pair of users decodes a message that conveys partial information for one of them only. Unlike the conventional NOMA, whose performance is dependent on the users’ pairing strategy, the proposed n-NOMA consistently outperforms both NOMA and OMA schemes. Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) that enables the control of wireless propagation environment has recently emerged as a promising cost-effective technology for boosting the spectral and energy efficiency of future wireless communication systems. Prior works on IRS are mainly based on the ideal phase shift model assuming full signal reflection by each of its elements regardless of the phase shift, which, however, is practically difficult to realize. In contrast, we propose in this paper a practical phase shift model that captures the phase-dependent amplitude variation in the element-wise reflection design. Based on the proposed model and considering an IRS-aided multiuser system with one IRS deployed to assist in the downlink communications from a multi-antenna access point (AP) to multiple single-antenna users, we formulate an optimization problem to minimize the total transmit power at the AP by jointly designing the AP transmit beamforming and the IRS reflect beamforming, subject to the users’ individual signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) constraints. Iterative algorithms are proposed to find suboptimal solutions to this problem efficiently by utilizing the alternating optimization (AO) as well as penalty-based optimization techniques. Moreover, to draw essential insight, we analyze the asymptotic performance loss of the IRS-aided system that employs practical phase shifters but assumes the ideal phase shift model for beamforming optimization, as the number of IRS elements goes to infinity. Simulation results unveil substantial performance gains achieved by the proposed beamforming optimization based on the practical phase shift model as compared to the conventional ideal model. Federated learning is a communication-efficient training process that alternate between local training at the edge devices and averaging of the updated local model at the center server. Nevertheless, it is impractical to achieve perfect acquisition of the local models in wireless communication due to the noise, which also brings serious effect on federated learning. To tackle this challenge in this paper, we propose a robust design for federated learning to decline the effect of noise. Considering the noise in two aforementioned steps, we first formulate the training problem as a parallel optimization for each node under the expectation-based model and worst-case model. Due to the non-convexity of the problem, regularizer approximation method is proposed to make it tractable. Regarding the worst-case model, we utilize the sampling-based successive convex approximation algorithm to develop a feasible training scheme to tackle the unavailable maxima or minima noise condition and the non-convex issue of the objective function. Furthermore, the convergence rates of both new designs are analyzed from a theoretical point of view. In recent years, network densification and edge caching become effective approaches to reduce the burden on the fronthaul links and the content delivery latency for wireless communication systems. However, maximizing system spectral efficiency cannot directly provide any insight on their energy requirements/efficiency for cache-enabled millimeter-wave (mmWave) radio access networks (RANs). In this paper, we study the design of energy-efficient transceiver, consisting of analog and digital precoder/combiner, for the delivery phase of the downlink of cache-enabled mmWave RANs. Due to the non-convexity of the delivery rate and objective, the coupling between the digital and analog precoders/combiners, and the constant module constraint on the elements of analog precoders/combiners, the problem of interest is non-convex and hard to obtain the global optimal solution, even the local optimal solution. To this end, we first overcome these challenges one-by-one and then transform the original problem into tractable one. Finally, an algorithmic framework that converges to the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker solution with provable is developed to achieve the design of energy-efficient transceiver. Friendly jamming is an unconventional approach to secure wireless communications. Specifically, a friendly jammer transmits jamming signals to an eavesdropper while a legitimate transmitter is sending data. The jamming signals only interfere with the eavesdropper, and thus, prevent data from being disclosed to unintended parties. Mainstream jamming schemes adopt a continuous jamming strategy (CJS), where the jammer is required to constantly transmit jamming signals in the entire duration of the legitimate transmission. In certain scenarios, however, the CJS may lead to excessive jamming, and cause a waste of energy and the degradation of jamming efficiency. To address the drawbacks of the CJS, we propose the concept of an intermittent jamming strategy (IJS), where a jammer alternates between jamming and non-jamming modes during the legitimate transmission. In this paper, we study the feasibility of the IJS for physical layer security. We first introduce a new metric to jointly measure security requirements and energy costs. Next, we formulate and solve an optimization problem with respect to the jamming duration proportion and the jamming power. This paper investigates a new scenario of spectrum sharing between unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and terrestrial wireless communication, in which a cognitive/secondary UAV transmitter communicates with a ground secondary receiver (SR), in the presence of a number of primary terrestrial communication links that operate over the same frequency band. We exploit the UAV’s mobility in three-dimensional (3D) space to improve its cognitive communication performance while controlling the co-channel interference at the primary receivers (PRs), such that the received interference power at each PR is below a prescribed threshold termed as interference temperature (IT). First, we consider the quasi-stationary UAV scenario, where the UAV is placed at a static location during each communication period of interest. In this case, we jointly optimize the UAV’s 3D placement and power control to maximize the SR’s achievable rate, subject to the UAV’s altitude and transmit power constraints, as well as a set of IT constraints at the PRs to protect their communications. Second, we consider the mobile UAV scenario, in which the UAV is dispatched to fly from an initial location to a final location within a given task period. We propose an efficient algorithm to maximize the SR’s average achievable rate over this period by jointly optimizing the UAV’s 3D trajectory and power control, subject to the additional constraints on UAV’s maximum flying speed and initial/final locations. Finally, numerical results are provided to evaluate the performance of the proposed designs for different scenarios, as compared to various benchmark schemes. It is shown that in the quasi-stationary scenario the UAV should be placed at its minimum altitude while in the mobile scenario the UAV should adjust its altitude along with horizontal trajectory, so as to maximize the SR’s achievable rate in both scenarios. Virtual reality (VR) over wireless is emerging as an important use case of 5G networks. Fully-immersive VR experience requires the wireless delivery of huge data at ultra-low latency, thus leading to ultra-high transmission rate requirement for wireless communications. This challenge can be largely addressed by the recent network architecture known as mobile edge computing (MEC) network, which enables caching and computing capabilities at the edge of wireless networks. This paper presents a novel MEC-based mobile VR delivery framework that is able to cache parts of the field of views (FOVs) in advance and compute certain post-processing procedures on demand at the mobile VR device. To minimize the average required transmission rate, we formulate the joint caching and computing optimization problem to determine which FOVs to cache, whether to cache them in 2D or 3D as well as which FOVs to compute at the mobile device under cache size, average power consumption as well as latency constraints. When FOVs are homogeneous, we obtain a closed-form expression for the optimal joint policy which reveals interesting communications-caching-computing tradeoffs. When FOVs are heterogeneous, we obtain a local optima of the problem by transforming it into a linearly constrained indefinite quadratic problem and then applying concave convex procedure. To satisfy the rapidly growing demands of wireless communications, new structures have been proposed for the fifth-generation (5G) mobile communication networks, such as cloud radio access networks (C-RANs), which have advantages including high energy efficiency, large network capacity, and high flexibility. This paper concentrates on the problem of remote radio head (RRH) activation, user association, and power allocation in C-RANs. To tackle the problem with $l_{0}$ norm, we transform it into a mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) problem. Instead of solving it by centralized solvers, we propose a novel algorithm based on Benders decomposition, which can obtain the optimal solution of the MINLP problem. To solve the primal problem in Benders decomposition efficiently, we adopt the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) to achieve a parallel implementation. To further reduce the complexity of solving the MINLP problem, a distributed two-stage iterative algorithm combining the ADMM and the max-sum algorithm is also proposed. The simulation results demonstrate that the first proposed algorithm can obtain the optimal solution, and the second proposed algorithm outperforms conventional algorithms significantly. In this paper, we investigate an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) enabled wireless powered communication network, where the UAV with constant power supply first charges all users by transmitting wireless energy to all users simultaneously, and after that all users send their own information to the UAV. Our target is the joint optimization of the time allocation as well as the position of the UAV to make the uplink sum achievable rate for all users as large as possible. To solve this non-convex problem, we first derive the analytic optimal solution of the time allocation, which is expressed as the function of UAV position. The original problem, after substituting the derived optimal time allocation, is reformulated as a new optimization problem whose optimization variable is only UAV position. We propose a sequential unconstrained convex minimization-based algorithm to obtain the globally optimal solution. The simulation results demonstrate that the performance of our proposed algorithm matches with that obtained by two-dimensional exhaustive search. To decrease the complexity, a Dinkelbach-based algorithm to obtain the locally optimal solution is also proposed. In this paper, we consider a wireless powered multi-relay network in which a multi-antenna hybrid access point underlaying a cellular system transmits information to distant receivers. Multiple relays capable of energy harvesting are deployed in the network to assist the information transmission. The hybrid access point can wirelessly supply energy to the relays, achieving multi-user gains from signal and energy cooperation. We propose a joint optimization for signal beamforming of the hybrid access point as well as wireless energy harvesting and collaborative beamforming strategies of the relays. The objective is to maximize the network throughput subject to probabilistic interference constraints at the cellular user equipment. We formulate the throughput maximization with both the time-switching and power-splitting schemes, which impose very different couplings between the operating parameters for wireless power and information transfer. Although the optimization problems are inherently non-convex, they share similar structural properties that can be leveraged for an efficient algorithm design. In particular, by exploiting monotonicity in the throughput, we maximize it iteratively via customized polyblock approximation with reduced complexity. The existing proactive caching policies are designed by assuming that all users request contents with identical activity level at uniformly distributed or known locations, among which most of the policies are optimized by assuming that user preference is identical to content popularity. However, these assumptions are not true based on the recent data analysis. In this paper, we investigate what happens without these assumptions. To this end, we establish a framework to optimize caching policy for base stations exploiting heterogeneous user preference, activity level, and spatial locality. We derive success probability and average rate of each user as utility function, respectively, and obtain the optimal caching policy maximizing a weighted sum of average utility (reflecting network performance) and minimal utility of users (reflecting user fairness). To investigate the intertwined impact of individual user request behavior on caching, we provide an algorithm to synthesize user preference from given content popularity and activity level with controlled preference similarity and validate the algorithm with the real datasets. Analysis and simulation results show that exploiting individual user behavior can improve both network performance and user fairness, and the gain increases with the skewness of spatial locality, and the heterogeneity of user preference and activity level. In this paper, the effective use of multiple quadrotor drones as an aerial antenna array that provides wireless service to ground users is investigated. In particular, under the goal of minimizing the airborne service time needed for communicating with ground users, a novel framework for deploying and operating a drone-based antenna array system whose elements are single-antenna drones is proposed. In the considered model, the service time is minimized by minimizing the wireless transmission time as well as the control time that is needed for movement and stabilization of the drones. To minimize the transmission time, first, the antenna array gain is maximized by optimizing the drone spacing within the array. In this case, using perturbation techniques, the drone spacing optimization problem is addressed by solving successive, perturbed convex optimization problems. Then, according to the location of each ground user, the optimal locations of the drones around the array’s center are derived such that the transmission time for the user is minimized. Given the determined optimal locations of drones, the drones must spend a control time to adjust their positions dynamically so as to serve multiple users. To minimize this control time of the quadrotor drones, the speed of rotors is optimally adjusted based on both the destinations of the drones and external forces (e.g., wind and gravity). In particular, using bang–bang control theory, the optimal rotors’ speeds as well as the minimum control time are derived in closed-form. Simulation results show that the proposed approach can significantly reduce the service time to ground users compared with a fixed-array case in which the same number of drones form a fixed uniform antenna array. The results also show that, in comparison with the fixed-array case, the network’s spectral efficiency can be improved by 32% while leveraging the drone antenna array system. In this paper, a fundamental study of energy efficiency (EE) optimization for coordinated multi-point (CoMP) simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) heterogeneous networks (HetNets) is provided. We aim to optimize the EE while satisfying certain quality-of-service requirements in regard to transmission rate and energy harvesting at both the macro cell and small cells. The corresponding joint beamforming and power allocation in the presence of intra- and inter-cell interference constitutes an EE maximization problem that is non-convex, and hence, very challenging to solve. In order to solve this problem, we propose to separate the beamforming design and power allocation processes. First, we adopt linear zero-forcing (ZF) beamforming to suppress the multi-user interference from both the energy harvesting users (EH-UEs) as well as the information decoding UEs (ID-UEs), thus transforming the HetNet under consideration to a virtual point-to-point system. An efficient power allocation algorithm is then developed to maximize the corresponding EE. On the other hand, the ZF strategy does not utilize the notion that interference benefits the EH-UEs. As a result, we propose a partial ZF approach by differentiating the EH-UEs and ID-UEs in order to further improve the EE. Energy harvesting is a key technology for futureenergy neutralubiquitous wireless communication systems. Among the many available sources of energy, RF harvesting is a natural choice for wireless communications since the devices can be efficiently designed for RF harvesting operations. However, the bursty nature of energy arrival associated with wireless power transfer and the energy usage pattern induced by devices’ activity may cause considerable stress to the battery and reduce its life span. In fact, deep charging and discharging cycles degrade the battery state of health, that is, the maximum amount of energy that can be stored. In this paper, a framework for the optimization of wireless nodes’ transmission and charging strategy is presented, where the battery aging rate is made explicit as a performance metric. The proposed framework is based on MDP theory, where the embedded stochastic model captures the energy arrival and data generation processes, and the control variable takes the form of a transmission power selection and energy acceptance/rejection. Dynamic network architectures (DNAs) have been developed under the assumption that some terminals can be converted into temporary access points (APs) anytime when connected to the Internet. In this paper, we consider the problem of assigning a group of users to a set of potential APs with the aim to maximize the downlink system throughput of DNA networks, subject to total transmit power and users’ quality of service (QoS) constraints. In our first method, we relax the integer optimization variables to be continuous. The resulting non-convex continuous optimization problem is solved using successive convex approximation framework to arrive at a sequence of second-order cone programs (SOCPs). In the next method, the selection process is viewed as finding a sparsity constrained solution to our problem of sum rate maximization. It is demonstrated in numerical results that while the first approach has better data rates for dense networks, the sparsity oriented method has a superior speed of convergence. Moreover, for the scenarios considered, in addition to comprehensively outperforming some well-known approaches, our algorithms yield data rates close to those obtained by branch and bound method. Wireless network virtualization enables mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) to develop new services on a low-cost platform by leasing virtual resources from mobile network owners. In this paper, we investigate a two-stage spectrum leasing framework, where an MVNO acquires spectrum resources through both advance reservation and on-demand request. To maximize its surplus, the MVNO needs to jointly optimize the amount of spectrum resources to lease in the two stages by taking into account traffic intensity, random user locations, wireless channel statistics, quality-of-service requirements, and the price differences. Meanwhile, to maximize the utilization of the acquired resources, the MVNO dynamically allocates the spectrum resources to its mobile subscribers (users) according to fast wireless channel fading. We formulate the MVNO’s surplus maximization problem as a tri-level nested optimization problem consisting of dynamic resource allocation (DRA), on-demand request, and advance reservation subproblems. To solve the problem efficiently, we first analyze the DRA problem, and then use the optimal solution to find the optimal leasing decisions in the two stages. In particular, we derive a closed-form expression of the optimal on-demand request, and develop a stochastic gradient descent algorithm to find the optimal advance reservation. For a special case when the proportional fairness utility function is adopted, we show that the optimal two-stage leasing scheme is related to the number of users and is irrelevant to user locations. Simulation results show that the two-stage spectrum leasing scheme can adapt to different levels of traffic and on-demand price variations, and achieve higher surplus than conventional one-stage leasing schemes. Cooperative multicast has been demonstrated to achieve significant performance gain over the classic source–destination transmission paradigm by exploiting spatial diversity through the participation of multiple relay nodes. As a major technical challenge, the selection of relays for a multicast session has significant impact on the multicast performance. The challenge is even more pronounced when the number of channels is limited as the relay selection is in this context coupled with channel allocation. The goal of this paper is to design a fair multicast relay selection scheme with limited channel resources. Specifically, we establish an analytical framework for this joint relay selection and channel allocation problem and develop a lexicographic max–min multicast relay selection scheme. Our design consists of two technical steps. First, we consider the maximization of the minimal data rate. By decoupling relay selection and channel allocation, the problem is transformed to a max–min–max problem, which is difficult to solve. To make this problem tractable, we reformulate it as a convex optimization problem via relaxation and smoothing, and prove the asymptotic equivalence from a geometrical perspective. Second, we propose an adjustment algorithm based on the initial max–min solution, and prove that the proposed scheme achieves lexicographic optimality. Ultra-dense networks are envisioned as essential to embrace the skyrocketed traffic for the next-generation wireless networks. In this paper, we consider the uplink transmissions in ultra-dense networks, where the increased interference along with the increased density significantly challenges the efficient utilization of network resources as well as the provisioning of users’ quality of services (QoS). Targeting these issues, we consider the QoS in terms of target signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) and power consumption simultaneously for each user within a multi-objective optimization model. We then investigate the interactions among users by leveraging the non-cooperative game-theoretical framework. By characterizing the properties of Nash equilibrium, we develop the target-SINR oriented resource allocation (TORA) algorithm, which features distributed implementation. Moreover, we obtain the condition to guarantee the convergence of our proposed TORA algorithm and demonstrate that it adapts to different interfering scenarios. Furthermore, considering the heterogeneous service requirements in real practice, we also design the target-SINR constrained resource allocation (TCRA) algorithm, such that TORA and TCRA are able to cope with voice and data services, respectively. Also provided are the simulation results, which demonstrate that, compared with the counterparts, our proposals more effectively guarantee the target-SINR for users with efficient power utilization. In this paper, we propose joint transceiver design algorithms for the full-duplex $K$ -pair multiple-input multiple-output interference channel with simultaneous wireless information and power transfer. To mitigate and exploit the complex interference, we consider two important utility optimization problems, i.e., the sum power minimization problem and the sum-rate maximization problem. In the first problem, our aim is to minimize the total transmission power under both transmission rate and energy harvesting (EH) constraints. An iterative algorithm based on alternating optimization (AO) and with guaranteed monotonic convergence is proposed to successively optimize the transceiver coefficients. The algorithm consists of three main steps, where the concave–convex procedure (CCCP), the minimum mean-square error (MMSE) criterion, and the semidefinite relaxation technique are, respectively, employed to compute the vectors of power splitting ratios, the receiving matrices, and the transmitting beamforming vectors. Two simplified algorithms based on fixed beamformers, namely, the maximum ratio transmission and the maximum signal-to-interference-leakage beamformers are also proposed. In the second problem, our aim is to maximize the sum-rate under additional power and EH constraints. Due to the highly non-convex nature of this problem, we first reformulate it into an equivalent-weighted MMSE problem by introducing suitable weight factors, such that the global optima of the two problems are identical. Then, by utilizing the concept of AO and CCCP, we show that the equivalent problem can be efficiently solved. Again, with the aid of the fixed beamformers, two simplified algorithms are provided to reduce the computational complexity. Information and energy can be transferred over the same radio-frequency channel. In the power-splitting (PS) mode, they are simultaneously transmitted using the same signal by the base station (BS) and later separated at the user (UE)’s receiver by a power splitter. In the time-switching (TS) mode, they are either transmitted separately in time by the BS or received separately in time by the UE. In this paper, the BS transmit beamformers are jointly designed with either the receive PS ratios or the transmit TS ratios in a multicell network that implements wireless information and power transfer (WIPT). Imposing UE-harvested energy constraints, the design objectives include: 1) maximizing the minimum UE rate under the BS transmit power constraint, and 2) minimizing the maximum BS transmit power under the UE data rate constraint. New iterative algorithms of low computational complexity are proposed to efficiently solve the formulated difficult nonconvex optimization problems, where each iteration either solves one simple convex quadratic program or one simple second-order-cone-program. Simulation results show that these algorithms converge quickly after only a few iterations. Notably, the transmit TS-based WIPT system is not only more easily implemented but outperforms the receive PS-based WIPT system as it better exploits the beamforming design at the transmitter side. Network localization is a key feature in many wireless services and applications. In typical range-based non-cooperative localization techniques, agents try to perform position estimation through ranging with respect to anchors with known positions. Based on the definition of squared positional error bound, the localization accuracy can be determined by the transmit power, carrier frequency, and signal bandwidth. This paper analyzes the joint power and spectrum allocation (JPSA) optimization problems in resource restricted wireless localization systems. We first formulate both optimal interference-free and interference affected JPSA problems. We then formulate the robust counterparts of the problems in the presence of uncertainty of the agents’ positions. Since all JPSA problems are non-convex, we show that they can be modeled and solved as geometric programming (GP) by proper approximations. Numeric results validate our analysis and show that the developed algorithms are able to find solutions close to the global optimum in the investigated cases. In this paper, the optimal jamming of wireless localization systems is investigated. Two optimal power allocation schemes are proposed for jammer nodes in the presence of total and peak power constraints. In the first scheme, power is allocated to jammer nodes in order to maximize the average Cramér–Rao lower bound (CRLB) of target nodes, whereas in the second scheme, the power allocation is performed for the aim of maximizing the minimum CRLB of target nodes. Both the schemes are formulated as linear programs, and a closed-form solution is obtained for the first scheme. For the second scheme, under certain conditions, the property of full total power utilization is specified, and a closed-form solution is obtained when the total power is lower than a specific threshold. In addition, it is shown that non-zero power is allocated to at most NT jammer nodes according to the second scheme in the absence of peak power constraints, where NT is the number of target nodes. In the presence of parameter uncertainty, robust versions of the power allocation schemes are proposed. Simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) can lead to uninterrupted network operation by integrating radio frequency (RF) energy harvesting with data communication. In this paper, we consider a two-hop source-relay-destination network and investigate the efficient usage of a decode-and-forward (DF) relay for SWIPT toward the energy-constrained destination. In particular, by assuming a Rician fading environment, we jointly optimize power allocation (PA), relay placement (RP), and power splitting (PS) so as to minimize outage probability under the harvested power constraint at the destination node. We consider the two possible cases of source-to-destination distance: (1) small distance with direct information transfer link; and (2) relatively large distance with no direct reachability. Analytical expressions for individual and joint optimal PA, RP, and PS are obtained by exploiting convexity of outage minimization problem for the no direct link case. In case of direct source-to-destination link, multipseudoconvexity of joint-optimal PA, RP, and PS problem is proved, and alternating optimization is used to find the global optimal solution. Numerical results show that the joint optimal solutions, although strongly influenced by the harvested power requirement at the destination, can provide respectively 64% and 100% outage improvement over the fixed allocation scheme for without and with direct link. This paper tackles the problem of minimum-energy cooperative transmission in wireless networks under the assumption of limited channel state information at the transmitters. It is assumed that only the average statistics of the fading channels are known to the transmitters. The objective here is to jointly optimize the set of relays and the transmission powers for both the broadcasting and cooperative transmission phases while satisfying probabilistic signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) constraints at the relays and at the destination node. Increasing the broadcasting power expands the set of potential relays and decreases the required power for cooperative transmission. Hence, there is a compromise in the selection of the power values, which is addressed in this work using a chance-constrained optimization framework. A closed-form approximate solution is also presented, which provides a low-complexity transmission scheme for energy-harvesting wireless networks. The newly emerging wireless powered communication networks (WPCNs) have recently drawn significant attention, where radio signals are used to power wireless terminals for information transmission. In this paper, we study a WPCN where one multi-antenna access point (AP) coordinates energy transfer and information transfer to/from a set of single-antenna users. A harvest-then-transmit protocol is assumed where the AP first broadcasts wireless power to all users via energy beamforming in the downlink (DL), and then, the users send their independent information to the AP simultaneously in the uplink (UL) using their harvested energy. To optimize the users' throughput and yet guarantee their rate fairness, we maximize the minimum throughput among all users by a joint design of the DL–UL time allocation, the DL energy beamforming, and the UL transmit power allocation, as well as receive beamforming. We solve this nonconvex problem optimally by two steps. First, we fix the DL–UL time allocation and obtain the optimal DL energy beamforming, UL power allocation, and receive beamforming to maximize the minimum signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio of all users. This problem is shown to be still nonconvex; however, we convert it equivalently to a spectral radius minimization problem, which can be solved efficiently by applying the alternating optimization based on the nonnegative matrix theory. Then, the optimal time allocation is found by a one-dimensional search to maximize the minimum rate of all users. The assurance of quality of experience (QoE) and provisioning of high throughput of the system represent the main goals of future wireless and mobile networks. This paper presents novel and practical cross-layer QoE-aware radio resource allocation (RRA) algorithms for the downlink of a heterogeneous orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) system. The objective of the proposed algorithms is to assure the appropriate level of QoE for each user of the system by incorporating application-layer parameters and subjective human perception of quality into the RRA process. We propose two user-oriented joint subcarrier and power allocation algorithms with low complexity for real-time and interactive services. The first algorithm dynamically allocates resources by assuring the same level of QoE to all users of the system, whereas the second algorithm introduces the efficient trade-off between the user's QoE and the spectral efficiency of the system. By considering application-layer parameters and user's perception of quality, high users' QoE and explicit control of data rates can be achieved. The numerical results show that the proposed algorithms achieve significant increase in the level of QoE compared to previous works, a fair distribution of capacity among users and near to optimal solution of QoE for the OFDMA system. Deployment of low-power low-cost small access points such as femtocell access points (FAPs) constitute an attractive solution for improving the existing macrocell access points' (MAPs) capacity, reliability, and coverage. However, FAP deployment faces challenging problems such as interference management and the lack of flexible frameworks for deploying the FAPs by the service providers (SPs). In this paper, we propose a novel solution that jointly associates the user equipment (UE) to the APs, and allocates the FAPs to the SPs such that the the total satisfaction of the UEs in an uplink OFDMA network is maximized. We model the competitive behaviors among the UEs, FAPs, and SPs as a dynamic matching game and we propose distributed algorithms to find the optimal UE association and FAP allocations. We show analytically that the matching algorithms converge to the optimal and stable outcomes after a small number of iterations. Simulations and analytical results show the proposed mechanism is arbitrarily close to the global optimal solution by setting a design parameter (step number) but has significantly reduced overhead and complexity over the centralized algorithm. In this paper, we present a video streaming system for wireless networks that employs utility optimization of pre-compressed video at the application layer, together with a novel cooperative wireless physical layer (PHY) that allows interfering transmissions. Our system model considers multiple and independent unicast or multicast transmissions between network nodes while a number of them serve as relays. For this new PHY the average transmission rate that each sender-destination pair can achieve is estimated first. Next, we show that the utility optimization problem can be simplified due to the features of the proposed PHY. Subsequently, we devise a utility optimization algorithm that is executed independently at each sender and it derives the optimal video packets that should be sent in the wireless link given the calculated rate constraint. Simulation results demonstrate that for unicast video streaming scenarios and with the utility optimization framework, allowing packets to interfere is a better choice than employing a typical cooperative PHY. For the case of multicast video delivery the performance of the proposed scheme is significantly improved for good channel conditions while the improvement is minimized in the low channel SNR regime when compared to the unicast scenario. In this paper, we propose a novel cooperative diversity scheme for wireless systems employing the combination of bit—interleaved coded modulation (BICM) and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). The proposed scheme utilizes an amplify—and—forward protocol where relays are assigned to multiple groups. Relays in the same group transmit concurrently over disjoint sets of sub—carriers and relays in different groups transmit in different time slots. We derive closed—form expressions for the asymptotic worst—case pairwise error probability and the diversity gain of the proposed cooperative BICM—OFDM scheme. Based on the derived analytical results we develop design guidelines for sub—carrier allocation, relay grouping, and relay selection. Cooperative communications have received considerable attention for wireless multimedia applications as a technique to improve reliability and service coverage. To apply such cooperation over slow fading channels, we consider exploiting the spatial diversity in multiple relay networks. In this paper, we focus on amplify-and-forward relaying schemes, namely, orthogonal amplify-and-forward, selective relaying, and distributed beamforming, for the cooperative wireless multimedia transmission. Furthermore, the successive refinement source coding is exploited such that the multimedia signal is encoded into multiple layers and the quality of its reconstruction at the receiver is improved when more layers are received correctly. We study two strategies for the layered source transmission, namely, progressive transmission and superposition coding. With our developed framework, we propose suboptimal resource allocation algorithms to efficiently assign rate, power, and channel uses to different layers so as to maximize the quality of the multimedia signal reconstructed at the receiver. The proposed optimization methodology is simple and only requires the knowledge of the channel statistics compared to the existing algorithms. As a result, the receiver only requires to feedback the determined rate, power, and channel uses to the transmitter whenever the channel statistics or the layered source transmission strategy changes.
