Edge federated learning (FL) is an emerging paradigm that trains a global parametric model from distributed datasets based on wireless communications. This paper proposes a unit-modulus over-the-air computation (UMAirComp) framework to facilitate efficient edge federated learning, which simultaneously uploads local model parameters and updates global model parameters via analog beamforming. The proposed framework avoids sophisticated baseband signal processing, leading to low communication delays and implementation costs. Training loss bounds of UMAirComp FL systems are derived and two low-complexity large-scale optimization algorithms, termed penalty alternating minimization (PAM) and accelerated gradient projection (AGP), are proposed to minimize the nonconvex nonsmooth loss bound. Simulation results show that the proposed UMAirComp framework with PAM algorithm achieves a smaller mean square error of model parameters’ estimation, training loss, and test error compared with other benchmark schemes. Moreover, the proposed UMAirComp framework with AGP algorithm achieves satisfactory performance while reduces the computational complexity by orders of magnitude compared with existing optimization algorithms. Finally, we demonstrate the implementation of UMAirComp in a vehicle-to-everything autonomous driving simulation platform. It is found that autonomous driving tasks are more sensitive to model parameter errors than other tasks since the neural networks for autonomous driving contain sparser model parameters. Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is a promising new paradigm to achieve high spectral and energy efficiency for future wireless networks by reconfiguring the wireless signal propagation via passive reflection. To reap the promising gains of IRS, channel state information (CSI) is essential, whereas channel estimation errors are inevitable in practice due to limited channel training resources. In this paper, in order to optimize the performance of IRS-aided multiuser communications with imperfect CSI, we propose to jointly design the active transmit precoding at the access point (AP) and passive reflection coefficients of the IRS, each consisting of not only the conventional phase shift and also the newly exploited amplitude variation. First, the achievable rate of each user is derived assuming a practical IRS channel estimation method, which shows that the interference due to CSI errors is intricately related to the AP transmit precoders, the channel training power and the IRS reflection coefficients during both channel training and data transmission. Next, for the single-user case, by combining the benefits of the penalty method, Dinkelbach method and block successive upper-bound minimization (BSUM) method, a new penalized Dinkelbach-BSUM algorithm is proposed to optimize the IRS reflection coefficients for maximizing the achievable data transmission rate subjected to CSI errors; while for the multiuser case, a new penalty dual decomposition (PDD)-based algorithm is proposed to maximize the users’ weighted sum-rate. Finally, simulation results are presented to validate the effectiveness of our proposed algorithms as compared to benchmark schemes. Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RISs) have been recently considered as an energy-efficient solution for future wireless networks due to their fast and low-power configuration, which has increased potential in enabling massive connectivity and low-latency communications. Accurate and low-overhead channel estimation in RIS-based systems is one of the most critical challenges due to the usually large number of RIS unit elements and their distinctive hardware constraints. In this paper, we focus on the uplink of a RIS-empowered multi-user Multiple Input Single Output (MISO) uplink communication systems and propose a channel estimation framework based on the parallel factor decomposition to unfold the resulting cascaded channel model. We present two iterative estimation algorithms for the channels between the base station and RIS, as well as the channels between RIS and users. One is based on alternating least squares (ALS), while the other uses vector approximate message passing to iteratively reconstruct two unknown channels from the estimated vectors. To theoretically assess the performance of the ALS-based algorithm, we derived its estimation Cramér-Rao Bound (CRB). We also discuss the downlink achievable sum rate computation with estimated channels and different precoding schemes for the base station. Our extensive simulation results show that our algorithms outperform benchmark schemes and that the ALS technique achieves the CRB. It is also demonstrated that the sum rate using the estimated channels always reach that of perfect channels under various settings, thus, verifying the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed estimation algorithms. Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is a promising new technology for achieving both spectrum and energy efficient wireless communication systems in the future. However, existing works on IRS mainly consider frequency-flat channels and assume perfect knowledge of channel state information (CSI) at the transmitter. Motivated by the above, in this paper we study an IRS-enhanced orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system under frequency-selective channels and propose a practical transmission protocol with channel estimation. First, to reduce the overhead in channel training as well as exploit the channel spatial correlation, we propose a novel IRS elements grouping method, where each group consists of a set of adjacent IRS elements that share a common reflection coefficient. Based on this method, we propose a practical transmission protocol where only the combined channel of each group needs to be estimated, thus substantially reducing the training overhead. Next, with any given grouping and estimated CSI, we formulate the problem to maximize the achievable rate by jointly optimizing the transmit power allocation and the IRS passive array reflection coefficients. Although the formulated problem is non-convex and thus difficult to solve, we propose an efficient algorithm to obtain a high-quality suboptimal solution for it, by alternately optimizing the power allocation and the passive array coefficients in an iterative manner, along with a customized method for the initialization. Simulation results show that the proposed design significantly improves the OFDM link rate performance as compared to the case without using IRS. Moreover, it is shown that there exists an optimal size for IRS elements grouping which achieves the maximum achievable rate due to the practical trade-off between the training overhead and IRS passive beamforming flexibility. In this paper, we investigate the multiple input multiple output (MIMO)-non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) transmission with the aid of location information. We first consider two users separated in both the distance and angle domains. With different access distances, NOMA could be used to serve the near-user and the far-user simultaneously, whereas spatial division multiple access (SDMA) would be applied if the two users have largely-separated angles of departure (AOD) that guarantees spatial orthogonality. Comparing the ergodic sum rates of these two multiple access (MA) schemes, we first characterize the preferable MA regions in the angle-distance plane. Analytical expression of the region boundary between NOMA and SDMA is derived. Moreover, NOMA-preferable regions are expressed in terms of the maximum distance difference and the minimum angle difference between the two users, respectively. On basis of these results, we further propose a location-based low-complexity user pairing algorithm for the general multiuser scenario. Numerical results confirm the accuracy of the derived region boundaries, and the simulations show that the proposed user pairing algorithm can effectively improve the resource utilization rate, compared to the conventional MA and user pairing schemes. The fifth generation of wireless communications (5G) promises massive increases in traffic volume and data rates, as well as improved reliability in voice calls. Jointly optimizing beamforming, power control, and interference coordination in a 5G wireless network to enhance the communication performance to end users poses a significant challenge. In this paper, we formulate the joint design of beamforming, power control, and interference coordination as a non-convex optimization problem to maximize the signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR) and solve this problem using deep reinforcement learning. By using the greedy nature of deep Q-learning to estimate future rewards of actions and using the reported coordinates of the users served by the network, we propose an algorithm for voice bearers and data bearers in sub-6 GHz and millimeter wave (mmWave) frequency bands, respectively. The algorithm improves the performance measured by SINR and sum-rate capacity. In realistic cellular environments, the simulation results show that our algorithm outperforms the link adaptation industry standards for sub-6 GHz voice bearers. Hardware non-idealities are among the main performance restrictions for upcoming wireless communication systems. Asymmetric hardware distortions (HWD) happen when the impairments of the I/Q branches are correlated or imbalanced, which in turn generate improper additive interference at the receiver side. When the interference is improper, as well as in other interference-limited scenarios, improper Gaussian signaling (IGS) has been shown to provide rate and/or power efficiency benefits. In this paper, we investigate the rate benefits of IGS in a two-user interference channel (IC) with additive asymmetric HWD when interference is treated as noise. We propose two iterative algorithms to optimize the parameters of the improper transmit signals. We first rewrite the rate region as an pseudo-signal-to-interference-plus-noise-ratio (PSINR) region and employ majorization minimization and fractional programming to find a suboptimal solution for the achievable user rates. Then, we propose a simplified algorithm based on a separate optimization of the powers and complementary variances of the users, which exhibits lower computational complexity. We show that IGS can improve the performance of the two-user IC with additive HWD. By blending the concepts of non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing, in this paper, a novel hybrid scheme is conceived for supporting diverse services in future wireless systems. Motivating to maximize energy efficiency (EE), the joint resource management of user clustering (UC) and power allocation is investigated for the downlink hybrid NOMA systems. Under two different power consumption cases, the optimal resource allocation (Opt-RA) algorithm is developed with the help of converting the original mixed integer non-linear programming (MINLP) problem to the tractable decoupled problems. For practical implementation, the heuristic resource allocation (Heur-RA) algorithm is also proposed, and it includes a low-complexity UC algorithm based on the candidate search-and-allocation approach. Our simulation results show that, both the Opt-RA and Heur-RA algorithms achieve significantly higher EE performance than other existing algorithms. Further, the results also prove that, the hybrid NOMA conceived is able to exploit the advantages of NOMA scheme, and is superior to conventional orthogonal multiple access (OMA) in terms of EE, as well as achieving higher flexibility for system configuration than NOMA. The broadcast nature of wireless communications makes transmission susceptible to eavesdropping. Recently, physical-layer security has been extensively studied to secure the wireless transmissions, but the security is severely compromised when the eavesdropper has the superiority in the channel quality. Toward this issue, we in this paper propose a joint ARQ and network coding method exploiting the characteristics of both the physical layer and the link layer. Specifically, we relate the message to be transmitted in the current slot with the successfully decoded messages in previous slots, where the ARQ is employed at the legitimate side to guarantee the successful transmission and decoding. Once one or more received messages fail to be decoded at the eavesdropper, it further prevents the eavesdropper from decoding the transmissions in later slots and thus the message transmitted currently and later is secured at the legitimate side. Moreover, for the more disadvantageous case that the eavesdropper is geographically closer to the transmitter, we further propose a destination-aided network coding scheme, which secures private information no matter where the eavesdropper is. The closed-form expressions of intercept probability and loss probability of the private information are analytically presented. The position and time of mobile agents are essential information for many wireless network applications. In this paper, we propose a single-anchor localization and synchronization scheme of full-duplex (FD) agents in the line-of-sight scenario, where the anchor is equipped with an antenna array. The agents perform inter-node ranging using the FD radios, while the anchor only receives signals transmitted from the agents. We derive the Cramér-Rao lower bounds for the agent positions and clock offsets based on the frames received by the agents and anchor. In particular, the Fisher information matrix for the positions and clock offsets can be decomposed into the information from the measurements of the arrival angles and arrival times. Then, we design the channel estimation algorithm to obtain the arrival angles, arrival times, and signal-to-noise ratios, based on which we further develop the network localization and synchronization algorithms to obtain the agent positions and clock offsets. Dynamic network architectures (DNAs) have been developed under the assumption that some terminals can be converted into temporary access points (APs) anytime when connected to the Internet. In this paper, we consider the problem of assigning a group of users to a set of potential APs with the aim to maximize the downlink system throughput of DNA networks, subject to total transmit power and users’ quality of service (QoS) constraints. In our first method, we relax the integer optimization variables to be continuous. The resulting non-convex continuous optimization problem is solved using successive convex approximation framework to arrive at a sequence of second-order cone programs (SOCPs). In the next method, the selection process is viewed as finding a sparsity constrained solution to our problem of sum rate maximization. It is demonstrated in numerical results that while the first approach has better data rates for dense networks, the sparsity oriented method has a superior speed of convergence. Moreover, for the scenarios considered, in addition to comprehensively outperforming some well-known approaches, our algorithms yield data rates close to those obtained by branch and bound method. Pilot contamination attack is an important activity of active eavesdropping conducted by a malicious user during channel training phase. This attack is potentially harmful to the physical layer security. In this paper, motivated by the fact that frequency asynchronism could introduce divergence of the transmitted pilot signals between intended user and attacker, we propose a new uncoordinated frequency shift (UFS) scheme for detecting pilot contamination attack in multiple antenna system. During the reverse training phase of the UFS scheme, the legitimate user Bob deliberately introduces multiple random frequency shifts in the publicly known pilot sequence. Since eavesdropper Eve has no knowledge of these random frequency shifts, it is almost impossible for her to pretend exactly like Bob. This provides the opportunity to detect the presence of Eve. An attack detection algorithm is then developed based on source enumeration method. Both the asymptotic performance analysis and numerical results are provided to verify the proposed detection scheme. The proposed scheme is also enhanced based on noise power estimation to cope with attacks from a multi-antenna Eve. Furthermore, the proposed UFS scheme is extended by introducing general parameterized phase shifts. It is demonstrated that the proposed UFS scheme can achieve comparable detection performance as the existing superimposed random sequence based scheme, without sacrifice of legitimate channel estimation performance. In this paper, we design a robust resource allocation algorithm for a wireless-powered communication network (WPCN) taking into account residual hardware impairments (HWIs) at the transceivers, the imperfectness of the channel state information, and the non-linearity of practical radio frequency energy harvesting circuits. In order to ensure power-efficient secure communication, physical layer security techniques are exploited to deliberately degrade the channel quality of a multiple-antenna eavesdropper. The resource allocation algorithm design is formulated as a non-convex optimization problem for minimization of the total power consumption in the network, while guaranteeing the quality of service of the information receivers in terms of secrecy rate. The globally optimal solution of the optimization problem is obtained via a 2-D search and semidefinite programming relaxation. To strike a balance between computational complexity and system performance, a low-complexity iterative suboptimal resource allocation algorithm is also proposed. Numerical results demonstrate that both the proposed optimal and suboptimal schemes can significantly reduce the total system power consumption required for guaranteeing secure communication, and unveil the impact of HWIs on the system performance: 1) residual HWIs create a system performance bottleneck in WPCN in the high transmit/receive power regimes; 2) increasing the number of transmit antennas can effectively reduce the power consumption of wireless power transfer and alleviate the performance degradation due to residual HWIs; and 3) imperfect CSI exacerbates the impact of residual HWIs, which increases the power consumption of both wireless power and wireless information transfer. Generalized frequency division multiplexing (GFDM) is one of the new waveforms with several attractive features such as lower out of band radiation, higher spectral efficiency, and better immunity to carrier frequency offset errors as compared with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing. However, it requires receivers with high computational complexity. Among different linear receiver structures, the joint minimum mean square error (joint-MMSE) receiver for GFDM achieves the best bit-error-rate (BER) performance, but it is the most computationally complex linear receiver. In this paper, we present a novel low complexity joint-MMSE receiver. We derive the closed-form expression for the joint-MMSE receiver filter by harnessing circulant properties of the matrices involved in the demodulation process. Amidst different operations involved in the receiver processing, inversion of a positive definite circulant-plus-diagonal matrix is found to be the costliest. Two low-complexity algorithms for the inversion of a positive definite circulant-plus-diagonal matrix are developed to design the low complexity receiver. We also propose a low complexity bias correction to improve BER performance. Our proposed receiver achieves a log-linear order of complexity without any noticeable loss in BER performance. To achieve spectral-efficient massive access in future wireless networks, this paper proposes a comprehensive fully non-orthogonal communication framework. First, we design a fully non-orthogonal communication scheme which consists of non-orthogonal channel estimation and non-orthogonal multiple access. Then, we analyze the performance of the proposed fully non-orthogonal communication, and derive a tight lower bound on the spectral efficiency in terms of key system parameters and channel conditions. Meanwhile, several novel insights are provided on spectral efficiency via asymptotic analysis in three important cases, i.e., a large number of base station (BS) antennas, a high BS transmit power, and perfect channel state information (CSI) at the BS. Finally, we optimize the performance of the proposed fully non-orthogonal communication and present two simple but efficient optimization algorithms for maximizing the weighted sum of spectral efficiency. Location-aware wireless networks can provide precise location information in harsh environments, however, which is only possible when all nodes are well-functioning. In this paper, we propose algorithms and analyze the performance limits for both non-cooperative and cooperative localization networks in the presence of ranging outliers. Especially, we show that the localization performance can be boosted by using the cooperative outlier detection scheme. An algorithm based on expectation-maximization is proposed for non-cooperative localization networks, while a variational message passing-based algorithm is proposed for the cooperative counterparts. Performance limits are investigated using Cramér–Rao lower bound. Further inspection on the performance limits confirms the performance gain from the cooperative detection scheme. Stochastic geometric analysis is also carried out to account for the stochastic nature of wireless networks, as well as to provide simpler expressions and additional insights. Simulation results corroborate the analytical results, and show that both of the proposed algorithms are capable of attaining the corresponding performance limits at a significantly reduced computational cost compared with existing algorithms. A number of recent source coding techniques compress the source signal into multiple layers such that a destination is able to reconstruct the original signal (with some distortion) even if it has not received all the layers. Implementation of such source coding techniques in wireless networks requires the application of coding mechanisms (such as multilayer coding) which allow unequal error protection for different layers of the transmitted data. In this paper, we study the performance of multilayer coding for quasi-static fading channels where the source and the destination are equipped with multiple antennas and the Channel-State-Information (CSI) is only known at the destination. We limit the study to the scenarios where the destination is only able to perform successive-decoding (joint-decoding is not possible) and the objective is to find the design of a multilayer code which maximizes the average data rate received at the destination. To this end, we first propose a design rule for constructing a proper multilayer code for Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output (MIMO) networks. Furthermore, the paper presents a procedure which uses the proposed design rule to determine the parameters of the multilayer code. Multipath transmission control protocol (MPTCP) allows a TCP connection to operate across multiple paths simultaneously and becomes highly attractive to support the emerging mobile devices with various radio interfaces and to improve resource utilization as well as connection robustness. The existing multipath congestion control algorithms, however, are mainly loss-based and prefer the paths with lower drop rates, leading to severe performance degradation in wireless communication systems, where random packet losses occur frequently. To address this challenge and improve the performance of MPTCP in wireless networks, this paper proposes a new mVeno algorithm, which makes full use of the congestion information of all the subflows belonging to a TCP connection in order to adaptively adjust the transmission rate of each subflow. Specifically, mVeno modifies the additive increase phase of Veno so as to effectively couple all subflows by dynamically varying the congestion window increment based on the receiving ACKs. The weighted parameter of each subflow for tuning the congestion window is determined by distinguishing packet losses caused by random error of wireless links or by network congestion. We implement mVeno in a Linux server and conduct extensive experiments both in test bed and in real WAN to validate its effectiveness. The performance results demonstrate that compared with the existing schemes, mVeno increases the throughput significantly, achieves load balancing, and can keep the fairness with regular TCP. Interference in multiuser systems is often characterized by a non-negative and irreducible coupling matrix. The maximum eigenvalue (Perron root) of the weighted coupling matrix provides a single measure for the joint achievability of certain signal-to-interference ratios (SIR). In this paper, we address the more general case where the users are coupled by concave interference functions. This corresponds to a system with adaptive receive strategies which minimize the interference received by each user. A necessary and sufficient condition for feasibility is obtained by minimizing the Perron root over the set of possible receive strategies. This type of problem is directly related to the problem of (weighted) max-min-SIR balancing. This paper provides an analytical framework and an iterative algorithm that converges monotonically to a global optimum. We also study an alternative approach based on a fixed point iteration. Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system suffers extra performance degradation in fast fading channels due to intercarrier interference (Id). Combining frequency domain equalization and bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM), the iterative receiver is able to harvest both temporal and frequency diversity. Realizing that ICI channels are intrinsically IS! channels, this paper proposes a soft-in soft-out (SISO) maximum a posteriori (MAP) equalizer by extending Ungerboeck's maximum likelihood sequence estimator (MLSE) formulation to ICI channels. The SISO MAP equalizer employs BCJR algorithm and computes the bit log-likelihood ratios (LLR) for the entire received sequence by efficiently constructing a trellis that takes into account of the ICI channel structure. A reduced state (RS) formulation of the SISO MAP equalizer which provides good performance/complexity tradeoff is also described. Utilizing the fact that ICI energy is clustered in adjacent subcarriers, frequency domain equalization is made localized. This paper further proposes two computational efficient linear minimum mean square error (LMMSE) based equalization methods: recursive q-tap SIC-LMMSE equalizer and recursive Sliding-Window (SW) SIC-LMMSE equalizer respectively. Simulations results demonstrate that the iterative SISO RS-MAP equalizer achieves the performance of no ICI with normalized Doppler frequency fdTs up to 20.46% in realistic mobile WiMAX environment. In this paper, we consider the downlink of a multiuser wireless communication system with multiple antennas at the base station and users each with a single receive antenna. It is known that when channel state information (CSI) is available at the transmitter a large performance gain can be achieved. In a system employing time-division duplexing (TDD), CSI can be obtained at the base station if there is reciprocity between the forward and reverse channels. CSI can also be conveyed from the users to the base station via a limited-rate feedback channel in a frequency-division duplexing (FDD) system. !n any case, channel estimation errors are inevitable due to the presence of background noise in the estimated signal and due to the finite number of feedback bits used in a limited-rate feedback system model. In this paper, we first consider the general case when partial CSI is available at the transmitter. We derive an MMSE based precoding technique that considers channel estimation errors as an integral part of the system design. Using rate-distortion theory and the generalized Lloyd vector quantization algorithm, we then specialize our results for the more practical limited-rate feedback system model. Compared to previously proposed precoding techniques such as channel inversion and regularized channel inversion, it is shown that the proposed precoding technique significantly improves the average bit error rate (BER) in the system. Furthermore, the performance of the proposed technique is investigated in the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime, and similar to [1], [21, it is shown that the proposed technique suffers from a ceiling effect that asymptotically limits the system performance. This paper proposes a cross-layer optimization framework for the wireless sensor networks. In a wireless sensor network, each sensor makes a local observation of the underlying physical phenomenon and sends a quantized version of the observation to a central location via wireless links. As the sensor observations are often partial and correlated, the network performance is a complicated and nonseparable function of individual data rates at each sensor. In addition, due to the shared nature of wireless medium, nearby transmissions often interfere with each other. Thus, the traditional "bit-pipe" model for network link capacity no longer holds. This paper deals with the joint optimization of source quantization, routing, and power control in a wireless sensor network. We follow a separate source and channel coding approach and show that the overall network optimization problem can be naturally decomposed into a source coding subproblem at the application layer and a wireless power control subproblem at the physical layer. The interfaces between the layers are precisely the dual optimization variables. In addition, we introduce a novel source coding model at the application layer, which allows the efficient design of practical source quantization schemes at each sensor. Finally, we propose a dual algorithm for the overall network optimization problem. Recently, a few efficient timing synchronization protocols for wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have been proposed with the goal of maximizing the accuracy and minimizing the power utilization. This paper proposes novel clock skew estimators assuming different delay environments to achieve energy-efficient network-wide synchronization for WSNs. The proposed clock skew correction mechanism significantly increases the re-synchronization period, which is a critical factor in reducing the overall power consumption. The proposed synchronization scheme can be applied to the conventional protocols without additional overheads. More-over, this paper derives the Cramer-Rao lower bounds and the maximum likelihood estimators under different delay models and assumptions. This paper studies the asymptotic performance of a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) multiple-access (MA) wireless network where spatial correlations at both the transmitters (i.e., mobile stations) and the central receiver (i.e., base station) exist, and more than one multiantenna sets are employed at the receiver to provide macrodiversity. The sense of asymptotic behavior we consider is the large-system limit in which the numbers of antennas at each mobile station and antenna set go to infinity with their ratios fixed. Using the replica method, we derive analytical solutions to the asymptotic spectral efficiency (SE) of the MIMO-MA systems for any given input distributions (not necessarily Gaussian) from the mobile transmitters. Our results can be regarded as the generalization of many previously known results for degenerate cases. Another contribution of this paper is an efficient algorithm to determine the asymptotic optimum transmit-signal covariance matrices that can maximize the SE of the MIMO-MA network within the period in which the spatial channel covariance information (CCI) can be considered static, and assuming that only CCI is available at the transmitters. Iterative channel estimation can improve the channel-state information (CSI) with respect to noniterative estimation. New iterative channel estimators based on the expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm are proposed in this paper. A first estimator, called the unbiased EM (UEM), is designed to unbias the EM estimates. A second estimator is then put forward, which is based on the expectation-conditional-maximization (ECM) algorithm, and its complexity is lower than that of the EM. An unbiased ECM (UECM) estimator is also proposed. Although the unbiasedness of the UEM and UECM estimators is not rigorously proved, the use of these names is explained in the paper. The new estimators are compared with well-known ones, such as the EM, the decision-directed (DD), and the data-aided (DA) estimators. Simulations are reported for a turbo receiver operating over frequency-selective multiple-input multiple-output channels. In wireless network resource allocation, the radio power control problems are often solved by fixed point algorithms. Although these algorithms give feasible problem solutions, such solutions often lack notion of problem optimality. This paper reconsiders well-known fixed-point algorithms, such as those with standard and type-II standard interference functions, and investigates the conditions under which they give optimal solutions. The optimality is established by the recently proposed fast-Lipschitz optimization framework. To apply such a framework, the analysis is performed by a logarithmic transformation of variables that gives tractable fast-Lipschitz problems. It is shown how the logarithmic problem constraints are contractive by the standard or type-II standard assumptions on the power control problem, and how sets of cost functions fulfill the fast-Lipschitz qualifying conditions. The analysis on nonmonotonic interference function allows establishing a new qualifying condition for fast-Lipschitz optimization. The results are illustrated by considering power control problems with standard interference function, problems with type-II standard interference functions, and a case of subhomogeneous power control problems. Given the generality of fast-Lipschitz optimization compared to traditional methods for resource allocation, it is concluded that such an optimization may help to determine the optimality of many resource allocation problems in wireless networks. Recent studies have shown that significant benefit can be achieved in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) by employing mobile collectors for data gathering via short-range communications. A typical scenario for such a scheme is that a mobile collector roams over the sensing field and pauses at some anchor points on its moving tour such that it can traverse the transmission range of all the sensors in the field and directly collect data from each sensor. In this paper, we study the performance optimization of such mobile data gathering by formulating it into a cost minimization problem constrained by channel capacity, required minimum data uploads from each sensor and bound of total sojourn time at all anchor points. In order to provide an efficient and distributed algorithm, we decompose this global optimization problem into two subproblems that can be solved by each sensor and the mobile collector, respectively. We show that such decomposition can be characterized as a pricing mechanism, in which each sensor independently adjusts its payment for the data uploading opportunity based on the shadow prices of different anchor points. Correspondingly, we give an efficient algorithm to jointly solve the two subproblems. Our theoretical analysis demonstrates that the proposed algorithm can achieve the optimal data control for each sensor and the optimal sojourn time allocation for the mobile collector, which minimizes the overall network cost. Optimal signaling for secrecy rate maximization in Gaussian MIMO wiretap channels is considered. While this channel has attracted a significant attention recently and a number of results have been obtained, including the proof of the optimality of Gaussian signalling, an optimal transmit covariance matrix is known for some special cases only and the general case remains an open problem. An iterative custom-made algorithm to find a globally-optimal transmit covariance matrix in the general case is developed in this paper, with guaranteed convergence to a global optimum. While the original optimization problem is not convex and hence difficult to solve, its minimax reformulation can be solved via the convex optimization tools, which is exploited here. The proposed algorithm is based on the barrier method extended to deal with a minimax problem at hand. Its convergence to a global optimum is proved for the general case (degraded or not) and a bound for the optimality gap is given for each step of the barrier method. The performance of the algorithm is demonstrated via numerical examples. In particular, 20 to 40 Newton steps are already sufficient to solve the sufficient optimality conditions with very high precision (up to the machine precision level), even for large systems. Even fewer steps are required if the secrecy capacity is the only quantity of interest. The algorithm can be significantly simplified for the degraded channel case and can also be adopted to include the per-antenna power constraints (instead or in addition to the total power constraint). Intra-session network coding has been shown to offer significant gains in terms of achievable throughput and delay in settings where one source multicasts data to several clients. In this paper, we consider a more general scenario where multiple sources transmit data to sets of clients over a wireline overlay network. We propose a novel framework for efficient rate allocation in networks where intermediate network nodes have the opportunity to combine packets from different sources using randomized network coding. We formulate the problem as the minimization of the average decoding delay in the client population and solve it with a gradient-based stochastic algorithm. Our optimized inter-session network coding solution is evaluated in different network topologies and is compared with basic intra-session network coding solutions. Our results show the benefits of proper coding decisions and effective rate allocation for lowering the decoding delay when the network is used by concurrent multicast sessions. This paper investigates the optimum energy efficiency (EE) and the corresponding spectral efficiency (SE) for a communication link operating over a flat-fading channel. The EE is evaluated by the total energy consumption for transmitting per message bit. Three channel cases are considered, namely static channel with channel state information available at transmitter (CSIT), fast-varying (FV) channel with channel distribution information available at transmitter (CDIT), and FV channel with CSIT. The link's circuit power is modeled as \Pcst + \CoeffPrate\Prate(R) Watt, where \Pcst>0 and \CoeffPrate≥0 are two constants and \Prate(R) is a general increasing and convex function of the transmission rate R≥0. For all the three channel cases, the tradeoff between the EE and SE is studied. It is shown that the EE improves strictly as the SE increases from 0 to the optimum SE, and then strictly degrades as the SE increases beyond the optimum SE. The impact of \CoeffPrate, \Pcst and other system parameters on the optimum EE and corresponding SE is investigated to obtain insight. Some of the important and interesting results for all the channel cases include: (1) when \CoeffPrate increases the SE corresponding to the optimum EE should keep unchanged if \Prate(R)=R, but reduced if \Prate(R) is strictly convex of R; (2) when the rate-independent circuit power \Pcst increases, the SE corresponding to the optimum EE has to be increased. A polynomial-complexity algorithm is developed with the bisection method to find the optimum SE. The insight is corroborated and the optimum EE for the three cases are compared by simulation results. Quantized Congestion Notification (QCN) has been developed for IEEE 802.1Qau to provide congestion control at the Ethernet Layer or Layer 2 in data center networks (DCNs) by the IEEE Data Center Bridging Task Group. One drawback of QCN is the rate unfairness of different flows when sharing one bottleneck link. In this paper, we propose an enhanced QCN congestion notification algorithm, called fair QCN (FQCN), to improve rate allocation fairness of multiple flows sharing one bottleneck link in DCNs. FQCN identifies congestion culprits through joint queue and per flow monitoring, feedbacks individual congestion information to each culprit through multi-casting, and ensures convergence to statistical fairness. We analyze the stability and fairness of FQCN via Lyapunov functions and evaluate the performance of FQCN through simulations in terms of the queue length stability, link throughput and rate allocations to traffic flows with different traffic dynamics under three network topologies. Simulation results confirm the rate allocation unfairness of QCN, and validate that FQCN maintains the queue length stability, successfully allocates the fair share rate to each traffic source sharing the link capacity, and enhances TCP throughput performance in the TCP Incast setting. In this paper, a derandomized algorithm for sampling decoding is proposed to achieve near-optimal performance in lattice decoding. By setting a probability threshold to sample candidates, the whole sampling procedure becomes deterministic, which brings considerable performance improvement and complexity reduction over to the randomized sampling. Moreover, the upper bound on the sample size K, which corresponds to near-maximum likelihood (ML) performance, is derived. We also find that the proposed algorithm can be used as an efficient tool to implement soft-output decoding in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. An upper bound of the sphere radius R in list sphere decoding (LSD) is derived. Based on it, we demonstrate that the derandomized sampling algorithm is capable of achieving near-maximum a posteriori (MAP) performance. It is well known that communication systems are susceptible to strong impulsive noises. To combat this, convolutional coding has long served as a cost-efficient tool against moderately frequent memoryless impulses with given statistics. Nevertheless, impulsive noise statistics are difficult to model accurately and are typically not time-invariant, making the system design challenging. In this paper, because of the lack of knowledge regarding the probability density function of impulsive noises, an efficient decoding scheme was devised for single-carrier narrowband communication systems; a design parameter was incorporated into recently introduced joint erasure marking and Viterbi decoding algorithm, dubbed the metric erasure Viterbi algorithm (MEVA). The proposed scheme involves incorporating a well-designed clipping operation into a Viterbi algorithm, in which the clipping threshold must be appropriately set. In contrast to previous publications that have resorted to extensive simulations, in the proposed scheme, the bit error probability performance associated with the clipping threshold was characterized by deriving its Chernoff bound. The results indicated that when the clipping threshold was judiciously selected, the MEVA can be on par with its optimal maximum-likelihood decoding counterpart under fairly general circumstances. In this paper, altruistic coalition formation in cooperative relay networks is studied. The communication is performed over two phases, the broadcasting phase and the cooperation phase. In the broadcasting phase, each node broadcasts its signal in its time-slot, while in the cooperation phase, all the nodes within their coalitions simultaneously relay each others' signals. A distributed merge-and-split algorithm is proposed to allow nodes to form coalitions and improve their total achievable rate. Moreover, the impact of different power allocation criteria is studied, where the sum-of-rates maximizing power allocation is shown to promote altruistic coalition formation and results in the largest coalitions among the different power allocation criteria. Finally, the proposed algorithm is compared with centralized power allocation and coalition formation, and shown to yield a good tradeoff between network sum-rate and computational complexity. It is challenging to design effective scheduling algorithms for multimedia transmissions over wireless channels that employ adaptive modulation and coding (AMC). On the one hand, it is desirable for the overall system throughput to be enhanced by taking advantage of multi-user diversity. On the other hand, fairness or QoS guarantees need to be maintained for individual users, especially in the case of multimedia applications that have strict delay requirements. In this paper, we propose a novel scheduling algorithm called QoS-based cross-layer scheduling (QoS-CLS) to achieve a good design tradeoff. To maximize the system throughput, the algorithm takes into account the information on both the physical layer and the data link layer to schedule user transmissions. Using cross-layer information, the scheduling problem is formulated as a Markov Decision Process and the optimal decision policy (based on the channel status, traffic state, and buffer status of each traffic flow) is pre-calculated by linear programming. This policy is then stored in the system for scheduling in real-time. Simulation results show that QoS-CLS can greatly enhance the channel throughput compared to existing algorithms because of its cross-layer QoS consideration and the optimization method. Energy harvesting is a promising solution to prolong the operation time of energy-constrained wireless networks. In particular, scavenging energy from ambient radio signals, namely wireless energy harvesting (WEH), has recently drawn significant attention. In this paper, we consider a point-to-point wireless link over the flat-fading channel, where the receiver has no fixed power supplies and thus needs to replenish energy via WEH from the signals sent by the transmitter. We first consider a SISO (single-input single-output) system where the single-antenna receiver cannot decode information and harvest energy independently from the same signal received. Under this practical constraint, we propose a dynamic power splitting (DPS) scheme, where the received signal is split into two streams with adjustable power levels for information decoding and energy harvesting separately based on the instantaneous channel condition that is assumed to be known at the receiver. We derive the optimal power splitting rule at the receiver to achieve various trade-offs between the maximum ergodic capacity for information transfer and the maximum average harvested energy for power transfer, which are characterized by the boundary of a so-called "rate-energy (R-E)" region. Moreover, for the case when the channel state information is also known at the transmitter, we investigate the joint optimization of transmitter power control and receiver power splitting. The achievable R-E region by the proposed DPS scheme is also compared against that by the existing time switching scheme as well as a performance upper bound by ignoring the practical receiver constraint. Finally, we extend the result for optimal DPS to the SIMO (single-input multiple-output) system where the receiver is equipped with multiple antennas. In particular, we investigate a low-complexity power splitting scheme, namely antenna switching, which achieves the near-optimal rate-energy trade-offs as compared to the optimal DPS. To increase frequency efficiency in cellular communication networks, this paper describes a cell coloring based distributed frequency allocation approach (C-DFA) for all kinds of cellular networks. C-DFA has high computational efficiency and is simpler to realize than other distributed approaches. Building on C-DFA, a distributed dynamic fractional frequency allocation (DDFFA) algorithm is designed for IEEE 802.16j supported Relay Based Cellular Networks (RBCN). It is shown that: a) C-DFA can better realize frequency efficiency and network resilience compared to centralized traditional distributed frequency allocation approach. b) DDFFA can significantly increase frequency efficiency to provide high capacity and throughput to the RBCN though at the cost of extra computation and BS-BS communication. Sums of lognormal random variables (RVs) are of wide interest in wireless communications and other areas of science and engineering. Since the distribution of lognormal sums is not log-normal and does not have a closed-form analytical expression, many approximations and bounds have been developed. This paper develops two computational methods for the moment generating function (MGF) or the characteristic function (CHF) of a single lognormal RV. The first method uses classical complex integration techniques based on steepest-descent integration. The saddle point of the integrand is explicitly expressed by the Lambert function. The steepest-descent (optimal) contour and two closely-related closed-form contours are derived. A simple integration rule (e.g., the midpoint rule) along any of these contours computes the MGF/CHF with high accuracy. The second approach uses a variation on the trapezoidal rule due to Ooura and Mori. Importantly, the cumulative distribution function of lognormal sums is derived as an alternating series and convergence acceleration via the Epsilon algorithm is used to reduce, in some cases, the computational load by a factor of 106! In wireless communication systems, all in-phase and quadrature-phase (I/Q) signal processing receivers face the problem of I/Q imbalance. In this paper, we investigate the effect of I/Q imbalance on the performance of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) maximal ratio combining (MRC) systems that perform the combining at the radio frequency (RF) level, thereby requiring only one RF chain. In order to perform the MIMO MRC, we propose a channel estimation algorithm that accounts for the I/Q imbalance. Moreover, a compensation algorithm for the I/Q imbalance in MIMO MRC systems is proposed, which first employs the least-squares (LS) rule to estimate the coefficients of the channel gain matrix, beamforming and combining weight vectors, and parameters of I/Q imbalance jointly, and then makes use of the received signal together with its conjugation to detect the transmitted signal. The performance of the MIMO MRC system under study is evaluated in terms of average symbol error probability (SEP), outage probability and ergodic capacity, which are derived considering transmission over Rayleigh fading channels. In this paper, we consider cross-layer optimization in wireless networks with wireless broadcast advantage, focusing on the problem of distributed scheduling of broadcast links. The wireless broadcast advantage is most useful in multicast scenarios. As such, we include network coding in our design to exploit the throughput gain brought in by network coding for multicasting. We derive a subgradient algorithm for joint rate control, network coding and scheduling, which however requires centralized link scheduling. Under the primary interference model, link scheduling problem is equivalent to a maximum weighted hypergraph matching problem that is NP-complete. To solve the scheduling problem distributedly, locally greedy and randomized approximation algorithms are proposed and shown to have bounded worst-case performance. With random network coding, we obtain a fully distributed cross-layer design. Numerical results show promising throughput gain using the proposed algorithms, and surprisingly, in some cases even with less complexity than cross-layer design without broadcast advantage. Dynamic spectrum access (DSA), enabled by cognitive radio technologies, has become a promising approach to improve efficiency in spectrum utilization, and the spectrum auction is one important DSA approach, in which secondary users lease some unused bands from primary users. However, spectrum auctions are different from existing auctions studied by economists, because spectrum resources are interference-limited rather than quantity-limited, and it is possible to award one band to multiple secondary users with negligible mutual interference. To accommodate this special feature in wireless communications, in this paper, we present a novel multi-winner spectrum auction game not existing in auction literature. As secondary users may be selfish in nature and tend to be dishonest in pursuit of higher profits, we develop effective mechanisms to suppress their dishonest/collusive behaviors when secondary users distort their valuations about spectrum resources and interference relationships. Moreover, in order to make the proposed game scalable when the size of problem grows, the semi-definite programming (SDP) relaxation is applied to reduce the complexity significantly. In this paper, we propose a resource allocation scheme to increase the effective capacity subject to the queue-overflow statistical Quality-of-Service (QoS) requirement for a multi-relay cooperative wireless network. Firstly, we consider the block fading channels and derive an algorithm in which each relay is allocated a time slot of optimal length during the cooperation phase, based on the channel statistics. Our analysis indicates that when the QoS requirement is loose, only the relay with the best average channel condition should be selected for cooperation. On the other hand, when the QoS requirement becomes more stringent, more relays should participate in cooperation. The asymptotic case when either the transmit power or the number of relays goes to infinity is discussed, and we shall reveal a tradeoff between the transmit power and the number of relays, given a target effective capacity. By modeling the channel correlation by a two-state Markov model, we will develop two sub-optimal time-slot allocation algorithms which can substantially increase the effective capacity compared with the opportunistic and equal allocation schemes. Our results will show that the channel correlation can sharply decrease the effective capacity and that applying the optimal time-slot allocation result obtained in block fading channels directly to correlated fading channels is no longer optimal. In a MIMO multiple-access channel where users employ Space-Time Block Codes (STBC), interference cancellation can be used to suppress co-channel interference and recover the desired signal of each user at the receiver. Leveraging the special properties of Alamouti matrices, we first show that spatial multiplexing of Alamouti signals retains the space-time diversity gain of Alamouti signaling using our proposed low-complexity Alamouti BLAST-MMSE (A-BLAST) Algorithm. Next, in contrast to traditional transmit diversity that focuses on STBC construction at the transmitter, this paper looks at transmit diversity from the perspective of the receiver. In other words, the receiver gets to choose the STBC's, which are favourable to the channel assuming a fixed BLAST receive algorithm. In a multiuser MAC setting, we first present a systematic methodology to exploit different decomposition structure in Alamouti matrices, each with different tradeoff between performance and decoding complexity using possibly different MIMO receive algorithms. We then demonstrate that the notion of angles (the inner product of two quaternionic vectors) between multiuser channels determines the performance of MIMO receive algorithms. As an application of the general theory, we transform the decoding problem for several types of Quasi-Orthogonal STBC (QOSTBC) into multiuser detection of virtual Alamouti users. Building upon our A-BLAST Algorithm, we propose new algorithms for decoding single-user and multiuser QOSTBC. In particular, we show that bit error probability is a function of the quaternionic angle between virtual users (for a single user) or multiple users. This angle varies with the type of QOSTBC and leads to a new form of adaptive modulation called code diversity, where feedback instructs the transmitter how to choose from a plurality of codes. In this paper, we present a novel pragmatic approach, referred to as detection b multiple trellises, to perform trellis-based detection over realistic channels. More precisely, we consider channels with unknown parameters and apply the concept of detection by multiple trellises to forward-backward (FB) algorithms. The key idea of our approach consists, first, of property quantizing the channel parameters and, then, considering replication of coherent FB algorithms operating on parallel trellises, one per hypothetical quantized value. In order to make the receiver robust against a possibly time-varying channel parameters, the proposed soft-output algorithms perform a proper "manipulation" of the forward sod backward metrics computed by the parallel FB algorithms at regularly spaced trellis steps. We consider two significant examples of application: detection over (i) phase-uncertain channels and (ii) fading channels. The performance of the proposed algorithm is investigated considering differentially encoded (DE) quaternary phase shift keying (QPSK) and iterative detection schemes based on tow-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. Besides having a too complexity, the proposed soft-output algorithms turn out to be robust, flexible, blind, in the sense that no knowledge of the channel parameter statistics is required, and highly parallelizable, as it is desirable in high-throughput future wireless communication systems. In this paper, we analyze the performance of spacetime codes and propose a distance spectrum computation method in fast Rayleigh fading channels. We first derive a new FER upper bound using the union bound and the PEP upper bound in the fast fading environment. The derived FER upper bound is very accurate, requires only the distance spectrum of the spacetime code, and takes a closed-form expression. Then we propose a distance spectrum computation method of space-time codes in fast fading channels, which exploits the symmetric property of the error state diagram in space-time trellis coded MPSK modulation to reduce the computation complexity. In this paper, based on a belief-propagation decoding strategy, a class of generalized parity-check codes called complex rotary codes is investigated. It is shown that, by using iterative sum-product decoding, the complex rotary codes have a much lower decoding complexity than Turbo codes, but have almost the same performance for the high code rate and short frame case (frame length< 500 bits). This paper develops a Nash game towards optimizing optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) in the presence of link capacity constraint. In optical wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) networks, all wavelength-multiplexed channels in a link share the optical fiber. In order to limit nonlinear effects, the total power launched into a fiber has to be below a nonlinearity threshold. This can be regarded as the optical link capacity constraint. We formulate an extended OSNR Nash game that incorporates this underlying system constraint. The status of an optical link is considered directly in the cost function. Sufficient conditions for existence and uniqueness of the Nash equilibrium (NE) solution are given. Two iterative algorithms for channel power control are proposed to compute the NE solution: a parallel update algorithm (PUA) and a relaxed PUA (r-PUA). Can conventional differential unitary space time modulation (DUSTM) be applied when there is an unknown carrier frequency offset (CFO)? This paper answers this question affirmatively and derives the necessary maximum likelihood (ML) detection rule. The asymptotic performance of the proposed ML rule is analyzed, leading to a code design criterion for DUSTM by using the modified diversity product. The resulting proposed decision rule is a new differential modulation scheme in both the temporal and spatial domains. Two sub-optimal multiple-symbol decision rules with improved performance are also proposed. For the efficient implementation of these, we derive a modified bound intersection detector (BID), a generalization of the previously derived optimal BID for the conventional DUSTM. In this paper, we design jointly optimum transmitter and receiver beamforming structures in correlated MIMO Rayleigh fading channels with noisy channel estimates, and evaluate their performance through a closed-form expression for the probability of error. At the receiver, an estimate of the channel is obtained based on the transmitted pilot symbols. The knowledge of the estimate is then made available to the transmitter through a feedback channel. It is assumed that spatial correlation exists, either at the transmitter or at the receiver. A new exact closed-form expression for the probability of error is derived and the joint effects of diversity order and channel estimation accuracy on system performance are analyzed. The jamming robustness of frequency hopping (FH) systems with M-ary frequency shift keying (MFSK) modulation may be potentially neutralized by a follower partial-band jammer. In this paper, a maximum likelihood (ML)-based algorithm that uses a two-element array is proposed for joint follower jamming rejection and symbol detection in slow FHJMFSK systems over quasi-static flat Rayleigh fading channels. The algorithm is derived by treating both the received jamming components and the unknown data symbols as deterministic quantities to be jointly estimated in an integrated ML operation. In addition, an approximate expression for the symbol error rate (SER) of the proposed scheme is derived when BFSK signaling is employed in a jamming dominant scenario. Analytical and simulated results show that the proposed approach is able to remove jamming and outperform the conventional and sample matrix inversion (SMI)-based beam-formers in the presence of a follower partial-band jammer.
