This paper proposes a novel scalable reinforcement learning approach for simultaneous routing and spectrum access in wireless ad-hoc networks. In most previous works on reinforcement learning for network optimization, the network topology is assumed to be fixed, and a different agent is trained for each transmission node—this limits scalability and generalizability. Further, routing and spectrum access are typically treated as separate tasks. Moreover, the optimization objective is usually a cumulative metric along the route, e.g., number of hops or delay. In this paper, we account for the physical-layer signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) in a wireless network and further show that bottleneck objective such as the minimum SINR along the route can also be optimized effectively using reinforcement learning. Specifically, we propose a scalable approach in which a single agent is associated with each flow and makes routing and spectrum access decisions as it moves along the frontier nodes. The agent is trained according to the physical-layer characteristics of the environment using a novel rewarding scheme based on the Monte Carlo estimation of the future bottleneck SINR. It learns to avoid interference by intelligently making joint routing and spectrum allocation decisions based on the geographical location information of the neighbouring nodes. Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have emerged as a promising technology for millimeter wave (mmWave) networks. In this paper, we utilize tools from stochastic geometry to study the performance of a RIS-assisted mmWave cellular network. Specifically, the locations of the base stations (BSs) and the midpoints of the blockage are modeled as two independent Poisson point processes (PPPs), where the blockages are modeled by a Boolean model and a fraction of the blockages are coated with RISs. The particular characteristics of mmWave communications, i.e., directional beamforming and different path loss laws for line-of-sight (LOS) and non-line-of-sight (NLOS) propagation, are incorporated into our analysis. We derive analytical expressions for the success probability and the area spectral efficiency. The success probability under the special case where the blockage parameter is sufficiently small is also derived. Numerical results demonstrate that better coverage performance and higher energy efficiency can be achieved by a large-scale deployment of RISs. In addition, the tradeoff between the BS and RIS densities is investigated and the results show that the RISs can indeed enable the traditional networks to improve the success probability, especially for the cell-edge region, with limited power consumption. In this paper, the role of feedback in two-way full-duplex Gaussian channel (TW-FD-GC) is revisited. First, we propose a practical coding scheme for the TW-FD-GC, which is based on the noisy type of the well-known Schalkwijk-Kailath (SK) feedback scheme. We show that though this scheme cannot achieve the capacity of the TW-FD-GC, the codeword length that achieves desired decoding error probability is extremely short. Then, we further prove that the proposed scheme is secure by itself, i.e., the achievable rate region of the proposed scheme is also an achievable secrecy rate region of the two-way full-duplex Gaussian wiretap channel (TW-FD-GWTC). In addition, for the TW-FD-GWTC, numerical result shows that the secrecy sum rate of our proposed scheme can be as large as those achieved by existing schemes in the literature for some cases. Next, we extend the proposed scheme to the TW-FD-GC with Gaussian state interference non-causally known by the corresponding transmitter. We show that the interference can be perfectly canceled by this extended scheme. Finally, we prove that this extended scheme is also secure by itself, and numerical result shows that this extended scheme may perform better than the existing ones in the literature. In mmWave networks, a large or nearby object can obstruct multiple communication links, which results in spatial correlation in the blocking probability between a user and two or more base stations (BSs). This paper characterizes this blocking correlation and derives its impact on the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) of a mmWave cellular network. We first present an exact analysis of a 1D network and highlight the impact of blocking correlation in the derived expressions. Gaining insights from the 1D analysis, we develop an analytical framework for a 2D network where we characterize the sum interference at the user by considering the correlation between the blocking of serving and interfering links. Using this, we derive the SINR coverage probability. Via simulations, we demonstrate that including blockage correlation in the analysis is required for accurate characterization of the system performance, in particular when the blocking objects tend to be large. In this paper, we consider an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-assisted cognitive radio system and maximize the secondary user (SU) rate by jointly optimizing the transmit power of secondary transmitter (ST) and the IRS’s reflect beamforming, subject to the constraints of the minimum required signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio at the primary receiver, the ST’s maximum transmit power, and the unit modulus of the IRS reflect beamforming vector. This joint optimization problem can be solved suboptimally by the non-convex optimization techniques, which however usually require complicated mathematical transformations and are computationally intensive. To address this challenge, we propose an algorithm based on the deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) method. To achieve a higher learning efficiency and a lower reward variance, we propose another algorithm based on the soft actor-critic (SAC) method. In these proposed algorithms, a reward impact adjustment approach is proposed to improve their learning efficiency and stability. Simulation results show that the two proposed algorithms can achieve comparable SU rate performance with much shorter running time, as compared to the existing non-convex optimization-based benchmark algorithm, and that the proposed SAC-based algorithm learns faster and achieves a higher average reward with lower variance, as compared to the proposed DDPG-based algorithm. The fifth-generation (5G) and beyond standards are being challenged by the diverse requirements of modern use cases. Multicarrier modulation techniques are one of the key components of the physical layer (PHY) design, which has immense potential to improve efficiency and reliability. In current state-of-the-art wireless technologies (i.e., NR and IEEE 802.11ax) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is used which has many disadvantages such as peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR), out-of-band emission (OOBE), and sensitivity to carrier frequency offset (CFO). To overcome these drawbacks several alternate multicarrier modulation techniques are being considered, such as discrete Fourier transform-spread-OFDM (DFT-s-OFDM), generalized frequency division multiplexing (GFDM), and orthogonal time-frequency space (OTFS). In this paper, we develop the physical layer abstraction (PLA) of these candidate multicarrier techniques to evaluate their performance under various use cases and scenarios. The PLA is a commonly used technique to avoid time-consuming PHY simulations in system-level simulators. To improve the accuracy of PLA in different fading conditions, we derive a fitting parameter as a function of the received signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) variance. The validation results show that performance can be accurately estimated through the proposed multicarrier PLA. Caching popular contents at edge networks (such as small-cell base stations) has been proposed to deal with the ever-growing mobile traffic. At the meantime, recommendation system is able to shape user demands for further prompting caching gain. In this paper, we study a multi-antenna multi-cell edge network employing transmit beamforming with caching-aware recommendation and user association. We first establish a framework for the joint problem of beamforming, user association, content caching and recommendation to minimize the content transmission delay of mobile users, by specifying a set of necessary conditions for all four component functions of the network. The resulting optimization problem corresponds to a non-convex, multi-timescale, and mixed-integer programming problem, which is hard to handle. To deal with the difficulty in solving the joint optimization problem by the direct formulation, we equivalently decompose it into three sub-problems. Then, we develop a computationally-efficient iterative algorithm to obtain the sub-optimal solution, where the three subproblems are tackled iteratively. This paper considers the finite-order filter design problem for the source and multiple full-duplex (FD) relays in a cooperative communication system under frequency-selective fading channels. The goal is to optimize the source and relay filters such that the end-to-end signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) of minimum mean-squared error decision-feedback equalizer (MMSE-DFE) can be maximized. The resultant design problem is very difficult since we need to deal with self interference (SI), inter-relay interference (IRI), and inter-symbol interference (ISI) at the same time. Novel designs are then proposed to overcome the difficulty in this work. Transforming the signals into the frequency domain and using some optimization techniques, we first theoretically derive the power spectrum of the source filter and the spectrums of the relay filters. Then, the finite-order design is developed to approach the derived spectrums. Based on the weighted least-square (WLS) criterion, the Steiglitz-McBride method is exploited to obtain the filter coefficients in finite lengths. Numerical results demonstrated that complete removal of SI may not be a good strategy; preserving a certain amount of SI at each relay instead provides better SINR performance. In the present paper a closed-form framework is derived for the analysis and optimization of the coverage probability (Pcov) and of the area spectral efficiency (ASE) in long-range (LoRa) networks. The proposed framework exploits stochastic geometry tools to associate the Pcov and the ASE to the end device (ED) transmit power and to the ED density. The analysis reveals the trends of the Pcov and of the ASE curves, with respect to both of the two parameters, while the robustness of the framework holds even at the asymptotic cases. Building upon the derived framework, the analysis demonstrates that no joint global optimum exists that jointly maximizes the Pcov over both parameters, suggesting that the optimization of the Pcov must be performed separately, for the two key network parameters considered. As opposed to that, the analysis demonstrates that a set of global optima exists that jointly maximize the ASE over both parameters, and these global maxima are subsequently derived in closed form. Thus, the derived framework fully characterizes the performance of LoRa networks, while defining in closed form the optimal points of operation that can be proven of significant value, for the transceiver and network design, of practical LoRa networks. This paper considers a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided millimeter wave (mmWave) downlink communication system where hybrid analog-digital beamforming is employed at the base station (BS). We formulate a power minimization problem by jointly optimizing hybrid beamforming at the BS and the response matrix at the RIS, under the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) constraints at all users. The problem is highly challenging to solve due to the non-convex SINR constraints as well as the unit-modulus phase shift constraints for both the RIS reflection coefficients and the analog beamformer. A two-layer penalty-based algorithm is proposed to decouple variables in SINR constraints, and manifold optimization is adopted to handle the non-convex unit-modulus constraints. We also propose a low-complexity sequential optimization method, which optimizes the RIS reflection coefficients, the analog beamformer, and the digital beamformer sequentially without iteration. Furthermore, the relationship between the power minimization problem and the max-min fairness (MMF) problem is discussed. Simulation results show that the proposed penalty-based algorithm outperforms the state-of-the-art semidefinite relaxation (SDR)-based algorithm. Minimizing the symbol error in the uplink of multi-user multiple input multiple output systems is important, because the symbol error affects the achieved signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) and thereby the spectral efficiency of the system. Despite the vast literature available on minimum mean squared error (MMSE) receivers, previously proposed receivers for block fading channels do not minimize the symbol error in time-varying Rayleigh fading channels. Specifically, we show that the true MMSE receiver structure does not only depend on the statistics of the CSI error, but also on the autocorrelation coefficient of the time-variant channel. It turns out that calculating the average SINR when using the proposed receiver is highly non-trivial. In this paper, we employ a random matrix theoretical approach, which allows us to derive a quasi-closed form for the average SINR, which allows to obtain analytical exact results that give valuable insights into how the SINR depends on the number of antennas, employed pilot and data power and the covariance of the time-varying channel. We benchmark the performance of the proposed receiver against recently proposed receivers and find that the proposed MMSE receiver achieves higher SINR than the previously proposed ones, and this benefit increases with increasing autoregressive coefficient. This paper provides a deep analysis for millimeter-wave device-to-device (mm-wave D2D) underlaid cellular networks to investigate how the performance of individual users or link percentiles under constraints are affected by the interaction between D2D and cellular communication modes integrated with the salient mm-wave features. Under a general Nakagami fading model, we derive the upper bounds for the $b$ -moments of the conditional signal-to-interference-noise ratio (SINR) distributions for the two modes given the network realization, and further calculate the upper bounds of SINR meta distributions (MDs). Moreover, we extend the MD-based analysis to evaluate the fine-grained performance for the transmission effectiveness, through deriving the bounding results for the user-perceived rate MD and spatial rate capacity (SRC), the latter of which is defined as the effective density of users satisfying a given transmission rate requirement with a certain probability. Numerical results validate the tightness of the proposed bounds and reveal the different effects of the network configuration parameter associated with mm-wave on the link and network performances from the view of individual users. In order to satisfy the requirement of extremely high data rate in traffic hotspot regions, millimeter wave (mmWave) has attracted significant attention in wireless communication networks. While the coverage performance of mmWave networks based on the distribution of signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) has been widely studied, it provides only very limited information on the link reliability. In this paper, we provide a fine-grained performance analysis of the mmWave networks with hotspots. Specifically, we first establish a general and tractable framework to investigate the performance of mmWave networks using the Poisson cluster process integrated with several features of the mmWave band. Both open and closed association strategies are considered. To show what fraction of users in the networks achieves target reliability when the SINR is given, we derive the tier association probability and the moments of the conditional SINR distribution, based on which the exact meta distributions of SINR are given. Interestingly, in clustered mmWave networks, the widely used standard and generalized beta approximations do not work well when the blockage effect is severe. To resolve this issue, we provide a modified approximation by scaling the standard beta distribution, which is shown to be closer to the exact results. We conduct extensive simulations to study the impact of mmWave and deployment features on the performance of clustered mmWave networks. Numerical results reveal that the optimal scattering variance of mmWave base stations scales with the cluster size to maximize the number of concurrent reliable links, and increasing the antenna directivity results in more reliable communications than elevating the transmit power of mmWave base stations. To achieve better connectivity in future communication networks, the deployment of different types of access points (APs) is underway. APs are expected to be equipped with self-organizing capabilities to reduce costs. Moreover, due to the spectrum crunch, frequency reuse among the deployed APs is inevitable, exacerbating the problem of inter-cell interference (ICI). Therefore, ICI mitigation in self-organizing networks (SONs) is commonly identified as a key radio resource management mechanism to enhance performance. To this end, this paper proposes a novel solution for the uncoordinated channel and power allocation problems. Based on the multi-armed bandits (MAB) framework, the proposed technique does not require any communication between the APs. The case of varying channel rewards across APs is considered. In contrast to previous work on channel allocation using the MAB framework, APs are permitted to choose multiple channels for transmission. Moreover, non-orthogonal multiple access is used, allowing multiple APs to access each channel simultaneously. This results in an MAB model with varying channel rewards, multiple plays and non-zero reward on collision. The proposed algorithm has an expected regret in the order of $\mathcal {O}(\log ^{2}T)$ , with extensive numerical results revealing it significantly outperforms a well-known baseline algorithm in terms of energy efficiency. Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is deemed as a promising solution to improve the spectral and energy efficiency of wireless communications cost-effectively. In this paper, we consider a wireless network where multiple base stations (BSs) serve their respective users with the aid of distributed IRSs in the downlink communication. Specifically, each IRS assists in the transmission from its associated BS to user via passive beamforming, while in the meantime, it also randomly scatters the signals from other co-channel BSs, thus resulting in additional signal as well as interference paths in the network. As such, a new IRS-user/BS association problem arises pertaining to optimally balance the passive beamforming gains from all IRSs among different BS-user communication links. To address this new problem, we first derive a tractable lower bound of the average signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) at the receiver of each user, termed average-signal-to-average-interference-plus-noise ratio (ASAINR), based on which two ASAINR balancing problems are formulated to maximize the minimum ASAINR among all users by optimizing the IRS-user associations without and with BS transmit power control, respectively. We also characterize the scaling behavior of user ASAINRs with the increasing number of IRS reflecting elements to investigate the different effects of IRS-reflected signal versus interference power. Moreover, to solve the two ASAINR balancing problems that are both non-convex optimization problems, we propose an optimal solution to the problem without BS power control and low-complexity suboptimal solutions to both problems by applying the branch-and-bound method and exploiting new properties of the IRS-user associations, respectively. In intelligent transportation systems, vehicular ad-hoc network (VANET) is an important technique for data exchange among vehicles and other mobile terminals (MTs) on the roads. In VANET, radio frequency (RF) and visible light communication (VLC) links could cooperate to improve the communication quality of MTs. However, in order to fully exploit the benefits of these two kinds of communication links and improve the VANET performance, a topology control (TC) scheme should be developed to help MTs establish VLC and RF links with their neighbors properly based on the distribution of MTs in the VANET. Since there is usually not a central controller in the VANET, the TC scheme should be conducted locally at each MT. As the size of VANET increases, distributed TC becomes more challenging since MTs usually need to make decisions with only local knowledge about the VANET. In addition, the frequent changes of VANET structure due to MT movements require that the TC scheme can adapt to the dynamic changes quickly. In consideration of those challenges, an adaptive TC scheme is proposed in this paper, aiming to achieve a balance between connectivity and power consumption for MTs in the hybrid VLC/RF VANET. In the proposed TC scheme, MTs can adjust their related links locally and iteratively based on merely its knowledge about the local VANET topology. In this paper, by considering the average mean squared error (AMSE) of channel estimation, we primarily obtain the closed-from expressions of the probability density function (PDF) and cumulative distribution function of AMSE for the least squares (LS)/minimum mean squared error (MMSE) estimation method as the line-of-sight (LOS) component is known, where the asymptotic analysis is executed in Rayleigh fading and strong LOS conditions. Secondly, the closed-form expressions for the expectation of AMSE (Expamse) and variance of AMSE (Varamse) are acquired, where Varamse is inversely proportional to the number of antennas (M). As M becomes infinite, the PDF of AMSE at Expamse has an order of root M. When the pilot power decreases with M in a power law, the LS case keeps deteriorating while the MMSE case converges to a constant which basically depends on the Rician K-factor. Next, the spectral efficiency is investigated by considering AMSE. When Expamse accelerates, the spectral efficiency of the LS method keeps dropping and that of the MMSE method firstly is degraded and then is improved to a constant except Rayleigh fading. In this paper, we develop an innovative approach to quantitatively characterize the performance of ultra-dense wireless networks in a plethora of propagation environments. The proposed framework has the potential of simplifying the cumbersome procedure of analyzing the coverage probability and allowing the unification of single- and multi-antenna networks through compact analytical representations. By harnessing this key feature, we develop a novel statistical machinery to study the scaling laws of wireless networks densification considering general channel power distributions including small-scale fading and shadowing as well as associated beamforming and array gains due to the use of multiple antenna. We further formulate the relationship between network density, antenna height, antenna array seize and carrier frequency showing how the coverage probability can be maintained with ultra-densification. From a system design perspective, we show that, if multiple antenna base stations are deployed at higher frequencies, monotonically increasing the coverage probability by means of ultra-densification is possible, and this without lowering the antenna height. Simulation results substantiate performance trends leveraging network densification and antenna deployment and configuration against path loss models and signal-to-noise plus interference thresholds. In this paper, a comprehensive design and analysis of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) full-duplex (FD) relaying systems in a multi-cell environment is investigated, where a multi-antenna amplify-and-forward FD relay station serves multiple half-duplex (HD) multi-antenna users. The pivotal obstacles of loopback self-interference (LI) and multiple co-channel interferers (CCI) at the relay and destination when employing FD relaying in cellular networks are addressed. In contrast to the HD relaying mode, the CCI in the FD relaying mode is predicted to double since the uplink and downlink communications are simultaneously scheduled via the same channel. In this paper, the optimal layout of transmit (receive) precoding (decoding) weight vectors which maximizes the overall signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio is constructed by a suitable optimization problem, and then a closed-form sub-optimal formula based on null space projection is presented. The proposed hop-by-hop rank-1 zero-forcing (ZF) beamforming vectors are based on added ZF constraints used to suppress the LI and CCI channels at the relay and destination, i.e., the source and relay perform transmit ZF beamforming, while the relay and destination employ receive ZF combining. To this end, unified accurate expressions for the outage probability and ergodic capacity are derived in closed form. In addition, simpler tight lower bound formulas for the outage probability and ergodic capacity are presented. Moreover, the asymptotic approximations for outage probability are considered to gain insights into system behavior in terms of the diversity order and array gain. Numerical and simulation results show the accuracy of the presented exact analytical expressions and the tightness of the lower bound expressions. The case of hop-by-hop maximum-ratio transmission/maximal-ratio combining beamforming is included for comparison purposes. Furthermore, our results show that while multi-antenna terminals improve the system performance, the detrimental effect of CCI on FD relaying is clearly seen. This paper analyzes an emerging architecture of cellular network utilizing both planar base stations uniformly distributed in the Euclidean plane and base stations located on roads. An example of this architecture is that where, in addition to conventional planar cellular base stations and users, vehicles also play the role of both base stations and users. A Poisson line process is used to model the road network and, conditionally on the lines, linear Poisson point processes are used to model the vehicles on the roads. The conventional planar base stations and users are modeled by the independent planar Poisson point processes. We use Palm calculus to investigate the statistical properties of a typical user in such a network. Specifically, this paper discusses two different Palm distributions, with respect to the user point processes depending on its type: planar or vehicular. We derive the distance to the nearest base station, the association of the typical users, and the coverage probability of the typical user. Furthermore, we provide a comprehensive characterization of coverage of all possible cellular transmissions in this setting, namely, vehicle-to-vehicle, vehicle-to-infrastructure, infrastructure-to-vehicle, and infrastructure-to-infrastructure. Terahertz (THz) band has attracted considerable interest recently due to its superior high frequency and large available bandwidth. THz could act a vital part in the sixth generation (6G) mobile communication networks. In this paper, we introduce the downlink non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) technology into THz band small cell networks, where the total performance is optimized considering the two key enabling technologies. In order to decrease the energy consumption triggered by increasing of wireless services, we pay great attention to energy efficiency (EE) optimization and resource allocation in the THz-NOMA downlink systems by solving the subchannel assignment and power optimization. We first exploit a channel model for the THz-NOMA downlink system by using the key features of THz-NOMA networks. Then we utilize Dinkelbach-style algorithm to solve the resource allocation problem and decompose it into two subproblems. A subchannel assignment algorithm and a power optimization based on alternative direction method of multipliers (ADMM) algorithm are developed to get the solution. Finally, to embody the strengths of THz-NOMA performance, we compare our proposed schemes against the conventional schemes. In this paper, we investigate a coordinated multipoint (CoMP) beamforming and power control problem for base stations (BSs) with a massive number of antenna arrays under coarse quantization at low-resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) and digital-to-analog converter (DACs). Unlike high-resolution ADC and DAC systems, non-negligible quantization noise that needs to be considered in CoMP design makes the problem more challenging. We first formulate total power minimization problems of both uplink (UL) and downlink (DL) systems subject to signal-to-interference-and-noise ratio (SINR) constraints. We then derive strong duality for the UL and DL problems under coarse quantization systems. Leveraging the duality, we propose a framework that is directed toward a twofold aim: to discover the optimal transmit powers in UL by developing iterative algorithm in a distributed manner and to obtain the optimal precoder in DL as a scaled instance of UL combiner. Under homogeneous transmit power and SINR constraints per cell, we further derive a deterministic solution for the UL CoMP problem by analyzing the lower bound of the SINR. Lastly, we extend the derived result to wideband orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing systems to optimize transmit power and beamformer for all subcarriers. This paper analyzes the performance of hybrid control-access schemes for small cells (such as femtocells) in the context of two-tier overlaid cellular networks. The proposed hybrid access schemes allow for sharing the same downlink resources between the small-cell network and the original macrocell network, and their mode of operations are characterized considering post-processed signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratios (SINRs) or preprocessed interference-aware operation. This paper presents a detailed treatment of achieved performance of a desired user that benefits from MIMO arrays configuration through the use of transmit antenna selection (TAS) and maximal ratio combining (MRC) in the presence of Poisson field interference processes on spatial links. Furthermore, based on the interference awareness at the desired user, two TAS approaches are treated, which are the signal-to-noise-based selection and SINR-based selection. The analysis is generalized to address the cases of highly-correlated and un-correlated aggregated interference on different transmit channels. In addition, the effect of delayed TAS due to imperfect feedback and the impact of arbitrary TAS processing are investigated. The distributed power control algorithms available in this paper assume perfect estimation of interference power at the receivers and often, the availability of perfect local channel state information (CSI). However, perfect estimation of interference power or acquisition of channel information is impractical. In this paper, we consider a generic class of distributed power control algorithms and analyze the resulting performance loss when faced with errors in CSI and/or interference level estimation. We approximate such power control algorithms with linearized state space dynamics wherein the errors in the estimation of received interference or the CSI, can be modeled as additive observation noise. Based on the proposed model, we derive lower bounds on the norm of the errors in the transmit power vector and receive signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) vector. Our analysis suggests that when the target SINR vector approaches the Pareto-optimal bound, the errors in the transmit vectors could grow without bound. As a consequence, to maintain a performance loss within an acceptable range, either much longer estimation times or lower target SINRs are required. This paper studies robust energy optimization for the cloud radio access network (C-RAN). The objective of this paper is to jointly minimize network power consumption through optimizing the base station (BS) mode, multi-user (MU)-BS association, and beamforming vectors given imperfect channel state information (CSI). To solve this non-trivial problem, we first transform the problem to a semi-definite programming (SDP) one using the S-lemma with the aid of the semi-definite relaxation technique, and then propose a SDP-based group sparse beamforming approach to solve it iteratively. Since the computational complexity of solving SDP problems is intractable, we propose to translate the uncertainty in the CSI to the uncertainty in its covariance matrix, and then recast the original problem as a mixed-integer second-order cone programming problem. We further propose a two-stage rank selection framework to determine the BS mode and MU-BS association separately and successively. Simulation results demonstrate the convergence of our proposed algorithms, and validate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms in minimizing the network power consumption of the C-RAN. It is known that superposition signaling in Gaussian interference networks is capable of improving the achievable rate region. However, the problem of maximizing the rate gain offered by superposition signaling is computationally prohibitive, even in the simplest case of two-user single-input single-output interference networks. This paper examines superposition signaling for the general multiple-input multiple-output broadcast Gaussian interference networks. The problem of maximizing either the sum rate or the minimal user’s rate under superposition signaling and dirty paper coding is solved by a computationally efficient path-following procedure, which requires only a convex quadratic program for each iteration but ensures convergence at least to a locally optimal solution. In this paper, a hybrid radio frequency (RF) and visible light communication (VLC) system is considered. A hybrid system with multiple VLC access points (APs) and RF APs is designed and analyzed. In indoor environments, VLC APs provide very high data rates whilst proving illumination, and RF APs offer ubiquitous coverage with moderate data rates. Since VLC networks piggyback on existing lighting infrastructures, they may not always be able to provide full coverage despite supporting very high data rates in some areas. Hence in practical deployments, the standalone VLC networks should be augmented in order to improve the per user data rate coverage. In this context, RF APs can be used to improve the per user rate coverage of VLC networks as well as to provide the ubiquitous control functionalities. In this paper, a simple RF deployment is proposed in order to improve the per user outage data rate performance of standalone VLC networks. In this paper, we investigate the two-way communication between two users assisted by a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS). The scheme that two users communicate simultaneously over Rayleigh fading channels is considered. The channels between the two users and RIS can either be reciprocal or non-reciprocal. For reciprocal channels, we determine the optimal phases at the RIS to maximize the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR). We then derive exact closed-form expressions for the outage probability and spectral efficiency for single-element RIS. By capitalizing the insights obtained from the single-element analysis, we introduce a gamma approximation to model the product of Rayleigh random variables which is useful for the evaluation of the performance metrics in multiple-element RIS. Asymptotic analysis shows that the outage decreases at $\left ({\log (\rho)/\rho }\right)^{L}$ rate where $L$ is the number of elements, whereas the spectral efficiency increases at $\log (\rho)$ rate at large average SINR $\rho $. For non-reciprocal channels, the minimum user SINR is targeted to be maximized. For single-element RIS, closed-form solution is derived whereas for multiple-element RIS the problem turns out to be non-convex. This paper puts forth an interference mitigation scheme, named signal-aligned network coding (SNC), for both uplink and downlink cloud radio access networks (C-RANs). The base stations (BSs) are connected to a central processor (CP) via digital links with individual limited capacities. The user equipments (UEs) communicate with the CP through BSs serving as relay nodes. We focus on the situation that the digital links have moderate rate constraint. Loosely speaking, the capacities of the digital links and the wireless links are of the same order of magnitude. The SNC scheme strategically aligns the signals by signal alignment (SA) and then decodes the aligned signals by physical-layer network coding (PNC). With the proper designs of the network-coded messages transmitted and the alignment of signals, the SNC scheme significantly mitigates the inter-cell interference. No matter the size of the network, the SNC scheme achieves full degrees of freedom (DoF) asymptotically. For the finite signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) performances, simulation results show that the SNC scheme achieves superior sum-rate than the conventional compute-and-forward scheme in the two-user and the three-user cases, especially in the high SNR regime. In this paper, we analyze pilot contamination (PC) attacks on a multi-cell massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) network with correlated pilots. We obtain correlated pilots using a user capacity-achieving pilot sequence design. This design relies on an algorithm which designs correlated pilot sequences based on signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) requirements for all the legitimate users. The pilot design is capable of achieving the SINR requirements for all users even in the presence of PC. However, this design has some intrinsic limitations and vulnerabilities, such as a known pilot sequence and the non-zero cross-correlation among different pilot sequences. We reveal that such vulnerabilities may be exploited by an active attacker to increase PC in the network. Motivated by this, we analyze the correlated pilot design for vulnerabilities that can be exploited by an active attacker. Based on this analysis, we develop an effective active attack strategy in the massive MIMO network with correlated pilot sequences. Our examinations reveal that the user capacity region of the network is significantly reduced in the presence of the active attack. This paper studies the energy-efficient power allocation problem for physical-layer security in multi-user (MU) distributed massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. A new metric called global average secrecy energy efficiency (GASEE) is proposed to measure the MU secrecy energy efficiency (SEE) with a single eavesdropper (Eve). We first derive closed-form expressions for the signal to interference-plus-noise ratios (SINRs) of legitimate users and the Eve with pilot contamination. Under a power consumption model that incorporates transmit power, backhaul power, remote antenna unit (RAU) circuit and signal processing power, and with transmit power constraints as well as SINR constraints for both users and the Eve, the GASEE maximization problem is formulated as a joint optimization of power allocation, RAU clustering, RAU selection and artificial noise (AN) selection. The formulated problem is a mixed integer nonlinear program (MINLP), which is solved by a double-loop procedure. In the outer loop, the denominator of objective is approximated as a linear function. In the inner loop, an efficient algorithm is proposed to find a near-optimal solution to the approximated problem by solving a sequence of sub-problems. Motivated by the increasing computational capacity of wireless user equipments (UEs), e.g., smart phones, tablets, or vehicles, as well as the increasing concerns about sharing private data, a new machine learning model has emerged, namely federated learning (FL), that allows a decoupling of data acquisition and computation at the central unit. Unlike centralized learning taking place in a data center, FL usually operates in a wireless edge network where the communication medium is resource-constrained and unreliable. Due to limited bandwidth, only a portion of UEs can be scheduled for updates at each iteration. Due to the shared nature of the wireless medium, transmissions are subjected to interference and are not guaranteed. The performance of FL system in such a setting is not well understood. In this paper, an analytical model is developed to characterize the performance of FL in wireless networks. Particularly, tractable expressions are derived for the convergence rate of FL in a wireless setting, accounting for effects from both scheduling schemes and inter-cell interference. Using the developed analysis, the effectiveness of three different scheduling policies, i.e., random scheduling (RS), round robin (RR), and proportional fair (PF), are compared in terms of FL convergence rate. It is shown that running FL with PF outperforms RS and RR if the network is operating under a high signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) threshold, while RR is more preferable when the SINR threshold is low. Moreover, the FL convergence rate decreases rapidly as the SINR threshold increases, thus confirming the importance of compression and quantization of the update parameters. In this paper, we investigate physical-layer security for a heterogeneous cellular network consisting of a macro cell and a small cell in the presence of a common eavesdropper that intends to tap both the macro cell and small cell. The orthogonal spectrum sharing (OSS) and non-orthogonal spectrum sharing (NOSS) are considered for the heterogeneous cellular network. The OSS allows the macro cell and small cell to access a given spectrum band in an orthogonal manner, whereas the NOSS enables them to access the same spectrum simultaneously and mutual interference exists. We present two NOSS schemes, namely, the interference-limited NOSS (IL-NOSS) and interference-canceled NOSS (IC-NOSS), where the mutual interference is constrained below a tolerable level through power control in the IL-NOSS, and the IC-NOSS exploits a specially designed signal for canceling out the interference received a legitimate user while confusing the eavesdropper. We derive closed-form expressions for an overall secrecy outage probability of the OSS, IL-NOSS, and IC-NOSS schemes by jointly considering the secrecy of both the macro cell and small cell. Furthermore, we characterize the secrecy diversity of the OSS, IL-NOSS, and IC-NOSS schemes through the asymptotic secrecy outage analysis in the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) region. It is proved that the OSS and IL-NOSS schemes obtain the same secrecy diversity gain of zero only, and a higher secrecy diversity gain of one is achieved by the IC-NOSS scheme. In addition, numerical results demonstrate that secrecy outage probabilities of the IL-NOSS and IC-NOSS can be minimized through an optimization of the ratio of the SNR of small cell to the SNR of macro cell, called the small-to-macro ratio (SMR). While the growth of mobile applications brings enjoyment to daily life, it also imposes more complicated traffic situations on wireless networks. A complete understanding of the impact from the traffic profile is thus essential for network operators to deploy next generation small cell networks. In this paper, based on stochastic geometry and queuing theory, we develop a mathematical framework that captures the interplay between the spatial location of small access points, which determines the magnitude of mutual interference, and their temporal traffic dynamic. We derive a tractable expression for the SINR distribution, and verify its accuracy via simulations. Based on our analysis, we find that: 1) under the same configuration, when traffic condition changes from light to heavy, the corresponding SINR requirement can differ by more than 10 dB for the network to maintain coverage; 2) the SINR coverage probability varies largely with traffic fluctuation in the sub-medium load regime, whereas in a scenario with a very light traffic load, the SINR outage probability increases linearly with the packet arrival rate; and 3) spatial densification can boost the cell-edge rate almost linearly in the dense regime, and thus confirms the appeal for ultra-dense deployment of small cells in the next generation wireless network. Combining cache and heterogeneous cellular networks (HetNets) together is proposed to satisfy the increasing capacity requirements in 5G networks. In this paper, we consider the analysis and optimization of random caching in the $K$ -tier multi-antenna multi-user HetNets. We derive the expressions of the cache hit probability and the potential throughput, using tools from stochastic geometry. Limiting to the fully loaded interference-limited scenario, we obtain the closed-form exact expressions and the upper bounds of the metrics. The linear asymptotic expression of the cache hit probability in the high signal to interference and noise ratio (SINR) threshold region is also obtained. Based on analytical results, we consider the potential throughput maximization problem via optimizing the caching distribution. For a general scenario, we obtain a local optimal solution and a simple approximate asymptotic optimal solution in the high SINR threshold region. For a special case where each BS serves the largest number of users per resource block, we numerically solve a non-convex problem and propose a sub-optimal caching strategy by approximation, where a closed-form result is obtained in each iteration. Numerical simulations show that our proposed caching schemes outperform existing caching schemes. The emergence of interference alignment (IA) as a degrees-of-freedom optimal strategy motivates the need to investigate whether IA can be leveraged to aid conventional network utility maximization algorithms, which are typically only capable of finding locally optimal solutions. To test the usefulness of IA in this context, this paper proposes a two-stage optimization framework for the downlink of a $G$ -cell multi-antenna network with $K$ users/cell. The first stage of the proposed framework focuses on nulling interference from a set of dominant interferers using IA, while the second stage optimizes transmit and receive beamformers to maximize a network-wide utility using the IA solution as the initial condition. Further, this paper establishes a set of new feasibility results for partial IA that can be used to guide the number of dominant interferers to be nulled in the first stage. Through simulations on specific topologies of a cluster of base stations, it is observed that the impact of IA depends on the choice of the utility function and the presence of out-of-cluster interference. In the absence of out-of-cluster interference, the proposed framework outperforms straightforward optimization when maximizing the minimum rate, while providing marginal gains when maximizing sum rate. In this paper, the spatial modulation (SM) technique is employed at the source and relay nodes in a full-duplex two-way relay channel (FD-TWRC) to support spectral-efficient bi-directional communications while guaranteeing a low cost implementation. Maximum likelihood detectors are employed at each node that is subject to an intrinsic self-loop interference. We first propose a tight upper bound on the average bit error probability (ABEP). Then, based on the ABEP upper bound, an asymptotic ABEP expression is derived in the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime. Exploiting the asymptotic ABEP, an exact SNR threshold for the selection between FD-TWRC-SM and half-duplex (HD)-TWRC-SM is derived in a closed form, which sheds light on when it is beneficial to select the FD (or HD) mode. In this paper, the sum rate of opportunistic interference alignment (OIA) is analyzed in multiple-input-multiple-output interfering broadcast channels. The alignment metric upon which users are scheduled is based on the chordal distance between certain interfering subspaces at each receiver, and the closed-form expressions for the rates of the scheduled users are derived. Furthermore, we show that for a system in which each user has $N$ receive antennas and the $j$ th base station transmits $d_{j}$ data streams, where $\sum _{j=1}^{I}d_{j}={N}+1$ and ${N}\ge 2$ , the rate for each user can be approximated by the mean of a Gumbel random variable. While the performance analysis of linear zero-forcing (ZF) and minimum mean-square error (MMSE) receivers has received much attention, there has been no exact closed-form distribution of signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) for MMSE multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems in the arbitrary fading environments for over the past 20 years. In this paper, an exact and general distribution of SINR for MMSE MIMO systems is presented under uncorrelated Rayleigh fading environments. We start our analysis by finding regular patterns from the probability density function (PDF) of SINR for small dimensions, and using the regular patterns, we extend the PDF to arbitrary dimensions. From the exact and general PDF of SINR for MMSE MIMO systems, the cumulative distribution function and the moment-generating function are derived in terms of the incomplete gamma function and the confluent hypergeometric function of the second kind, respectively. As applications, the error probability, outage probability, and achievable sum rate are investigated by using the distribution of SINR for MMSE MIMO systems. Millimeter-wave (mmWave) bands will play an important role in 5G wireless systems. The system performance can be assessed by using models from stochastic geometry that cater for the directivity in the desired signal transmissions as well as the interference, and by calculating the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio ($\mathsf {SINR}$) coverage. Nonetheless, the accuracy of the existing coverage expressions derived through stochastic geometry may be questioned, as it is not clear whether they would capture the impact of the detailed mmWave channel and antenna features. In this paper, we propose an $\mathsf {SINR}$ coverage analysis framework that includes realistic channel model and antenna element radiation patterns. We introduce and estimate two parameters, aligned gain and misaligned gain, associated with the desired signal beam and the interfering signal beam, respectively. The distributions of these gains are used to determine the distribution of the $\mathsf {SINR}$ which is compared with the corresponding $\mathsf {SINR}$ coverage, calculated through the system-level simulations. The results show that both aligned and misaligned gains can be modeled as exponential-logarithmically distributed random variables with the highest accuracy, and can further be approximated as exponentially distributed random variables with reasonable accuracy. This paper focuses on the meta distributions of the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) and user-perceived rate in heterogeneous cellular networks (HCNs) with multiple tiers of base stations. On the one hand, it is desirable to offload users to small cells to alleviate the congestion in macrocells; on the other hand, such offloading would in turn cause an SINR degradation of the offloaded users, which needs to be mitigated through interference avoidance based on resource partitioning. Thus, in consideration of both aspects, we provide a general framework for modeling and analyzing joint spectrum allocation and offloading in an HCN using the $K$ -tier homogeneous-independent Poisson model. With it, we derive the per-tier and overall moments of the conditional SINR and rate distribution given the point process, based on which the exact meta distributions are given. We show that the conventional SINR or rate performance evaluated at the typical user (averaging over all tiers and links in the HCN), by itself, is insufficient, and a much sharper version provided by the meta distribution is required in conjunction with the expected value to give a thorough assessment of the benefits of joint resource partitioning and offloading in HCNs. Coordinated multipoint transmission (CoMP) and soft frequency reuse (SFR) techniques are two common mechanisms that are often combined with the aim of reducing the deleterious effects caused by inter-cell interference in current and envisaged cellular networks (4G/5G). The performance of this combined mechanism has been shown to be strongly influenced by the specific choice of the parameters determining the frequency reuse settings. So far, their optimization has relied on time-consuming simulations that make the CoMP-SFR optimization a challenging issue. In an attempt to revert this situation, this paper introduces a novel analytical framework that, for a specific set of SFR parameters, allows the computation of closed-form approximations to relevant performance metrics such as average total capacity, worst-users rate, and backhaul requirements. Remarkably, these approximations exhibit a dependence on the SFR parameters that match that of the true metrics, hence allowing the optimization of the SFR-related parameters based on the proposed analytical expressions. Furthermore, and very important from a practical perspective, the availability of these closed-form expressions allows the efficient application of multi-objective optimization techniques to realistic scenarios with irregularly deployed base stations that serve to evaluate the various tradeoffs the designer is facing when optimizing multiple, and often conflictive, performance metrics. This paper studies interference exploitation techniques for secure beamforming design in simultaneous wireless information and power transfer in multiple-input single-output systems. In particular, multiuser interference (MUI) and artificially generated noise (AN) signals are designed as constructive to the information receivers (IRs) yet kept disruptive to potential eavesdropping by the energy receivers. The objective is to improve the received signal-to-interference and noise ratio (SINR) at the IRs by exploiting the MUI and AN power in an attempt to minimize the total transmit power. We first propose second-order cone programming-based solutions for the perfect channel state information (CSI) case by defining strong upper and lower bounds on the energy harvesting (EH) constraints. We then provide semidefinite programming-based solutions for the problems. In addition, we also solve the worst case harvested energy maximization problem under the proposed bounds. Finally, robust beamforming approaches based on the above are derived for the case of imperfect CSI. Our results demonstrate that the proposed constructive interference precoding schemes yield huge saving in transmit power over conventional interference management schemes. Most importantly, they show that, while the statistical constraints of conventional approaches may lead to instantaneous SINR as well as EH outages, the instantaneous constraints of our approaches guarantee both constraints at every symbol period. This paper considers a wireless communication network consisting of multiple interfering multicast sessions. Different from a unicast system where each transmitter has only one receiver, in a multicast system, each transmitter has multiple receivers and broadcasts a common message to all of them. It is a well-known result for wireless unicast systems that the feasibility of a signal-to-interference-plus-noise power ratio (SINR) without power constraint is decided by the spectral radius of a nonnegative matrix. We generalize this result and obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for the feasibility of an SINR in a wireless multicast system with and without power constraint. The feasible SINR region and its geometric properties are studied. This paper develops an innovative approach to the modeling and analysis of downlink cellular networks with device-to-device (D2D) transmissions. The analytical embodiment of the signal-to-noise and-interference ratio analysis in general fading channels is unified due to the H-transform theory, a taxonomy never considered before in stochastic geometry-based cellular network modeling and analysis. The proposed framework has the potential, due to versatility of the Fox’s H functions, of significantly simplifying the cumbersome analysis procedure and representation of D2D and cellular coverage, while subsuming those previously derived for all the known simple and composite fading models. By harnessing its tractability, the developed statistical machinery is employed to launch an investigation into the optimal design of coexisting D2D and cellular communications. We propose novel coverage-aware power control combined with opportunistic access control to maximize the area spectral efficiency (ASE) of D2D communications. A fractional frequency reuse (FFR) system is an inter-cell interference coordination scheme used in cellular networks. In FFR systems, the available bandwidth is partitioned into orthogonal subbands such that the users near the cell center adopt subbands of a frequency reuse (FR) factor equal to one (i.e., Full FR), and the users near the cell edge adopt the subbands of an FR factor greater than one (i.e., Partial FR). The proper design of Full FR coverage, which is used to distinguish Full FR regions from Partial FR regions, plays a critical role in FFR system performance. This paper studies the optimal Full FR coverage that maximizes system throughput in the downlink in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) cellular networks. For MIMO systems, orthogonal space–time block codes are considered. We analytically compare the outage probabilities of Full FR and Partial FR for a given user’s location, where the outage probability is evaluated through small-scale multipath fading. By doing so, subject to the constraint that a given target outage probability (quality-of-service) is satisfied, the optimal Full FR coverage is analyzed as a function of base station (BS) power. We prove that the optimal Full FR coverage is a non-increasing function of BS power when the powers of all BSs in the network are scaled up or down at the same rate. This result offers insight into the design of Full FR coverage in relation to BS power; we gain insight into the complicated relationship between crucial FFR design parameters. This paper investigates a new beamforming approach for interference exploitation, which has recently attracted interest as an alternative to conventional interference-avoidance beamforming for the downlink of multiple-input multiple-output systems. Contrary to existing interference exploitation approaches that focus on signal-to-noise ratio performance, we adopt an approach based on the detection region of the signal constellation. Focusing on quality of service, we then formulate the optimization for minimizing the error probability (EP) for the worst user, subject to power constraints. We do this by employing the knowledge of channel state information at the transmitter, along with all downlink users’ data that are readily available at the base station during downlink transmission. In this context, we also show that the detection-region-based beamforming and the worst user EP downlink beamforming are equivalent problems. Finally, we further propose a sum EPs approach and provide an analytic bound of average symbol error rate performance. This is a sequel of our previous work on characterization of maximum sum rate of slotted Aloha networks. By extending the analysis to incorporate the capacity-achieving receiver structure, successive interference cancellation (SIC), this paper aims to identify the rate loss due to random access. Specifically, two representative SIC receivers are considered, i.e., ordered SIC, where packets are decoded in a descending order of their received power, and unordered SIC, where packets are decoded in a random order. The maximum sum rate and the corresponding optimal parameter setting including the transmission probability and the information encoding rate in both cases are obtained as the functions of the mean received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The comparison to the capture model shows that the gains are significant only with the ordered SIC at moderate values of the mean received SNR $\rho $. With a large $\rho $ , the rate gap diminishes, and they all have the same high-SNR slope of $e^{-1}$ , which is far below that of the ergodic sum capacity of fading channels. The effect of multipacket reception (MPR) on the sum rate performance is also studied by comparing the MPR receivers including SIC and the capture model to the classical collision model. This paper considers the problem of dynamic power allocation in the downlink of multi-cell networks, where each cell utilizes non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA)-based resource allocation. Also, coordinated multi-point (CoMP) transmission is utilized among multiple cells to serve users experiencing severe inter-cell interference (ICI). Under this CoMP- NOMA framework, CoMP transmission is applied to a user experiencing less distinctive channel gain with multiple base stations (BSs)/cells (i.e., severe ICI-prone user) and non-CoMP transmission (i.e., transmission without any coordination among multiple BSs) is applied to a user experiencing dominating channel gain with only one BS/cell, while NOMA is utilized at each BS to schedule CoMP and non-CoMP users over the same transmission resources, i.e., time, spectrum and space. After discussing various CoMP- NOMA models for downlink power allocation in multi-cell networks, we focus on a joint transmission CoMP- NOMA (JT-CoMP-NOMA) model. For the JT-CoMP-NOMA model, an optimal joint power allocation problem is formulated and the solution is derived for each CoMP- set consisting of multiple cooperating BSs (i.e., CoMP BSs). To avoid the huge computational complexity of the joint power optimization approach, we propose a distributed power optimization approach at each cooperating BS whose optimal solution is independent of the solution of other coordinating BSs. The distributed solution for the joint power optimization problem is validated and numerical performance evaluation is carried out for the proposed CoMP- NOMA models including JT-CoMP-NOMA and coordinated scheduling CoMP- NOMA (CS-CoMP-NOMA). The obtained results reveal significant gains in spectral and energy efficiency in comparison with conventional CoMP- orthogonal multiple access (CoMP-OMA) systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we provide a global framework analysis of a dual-hop mixed radio frequency (RF)/free space optical (FSO) system with multiple branches/relays wherein the first and second hops, respectively, consist of RF and FSO channels. To cover various cases of fading, we propose generalized channels’ models for RF and FSO links that follow the Nakagami-m and the double generalized gamma distributions, respectively. Moreover, we suggest channel state information (CSI)-assisted relaying or variable relaying gain based amplifiy-and-forward amplification. Partial relay selection with outdated CSI is assumed as a relay selection protocol based on the knowledge of the RF CSI. In order to derive the end-to-end signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio statistics, such as the cumulative distribution function, the probability density function, the higher order moments, the amount of fading and the moment generating function, the numerical values of the fading severity parameters are only valid for integer values. Based on these statistics, we derive closed-forms of the outage probability, the bit error probability, the ergodic capacity, and the outage capacity in terms of Meijer-G, univariate, bivariate, and trivariate Fox-H functions. Capitalizing on these expressions, we derive the asymptotic high SNR to unpack valuable engineering insights of the system performance.
