This paper studies an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-assisted wireless powered IoT network, where a rotary-wing UAV adopts fly-hover-communicate protocol to successively visit IoT devices in demand. During the hovering periods, the UAV works on full-duplex mode to simultaneously collect data from the target device and charge other devices within its coverage. Practical propulsion power consumption model and non-linear energy harvesting model are taken into account. We formulate a multi-objective optimization problem to jointly optimize three objectives: maximization of sum data rate, maximization of total harvested energy and minimization of UAV’s energy consumption over a particular mission period. These three objectives are in conflict with each other partly and weight parameters are given to describe associated importance. Since IoT devices keep gathering information from the physical surrounding environment and their requirements to upload data change dynamically, online path planning of the UAV is required. In this paper, we apply deep reinforcement learning algorithm to achieve online decision. An extended deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) algorithm is proposed to learn control policies of UAV over multiple objectives. While training, the agent learns to produce optimal policies under given weights conditions on the basis of achieving timely data collection according to the requirement priority and avoiding devices’ data overflow. The verification results show that the proposed MODDPG (multi-objective DDPG) algorithm achieves joint optimization of three objectives and optimal policies can be adjusted according to weight parameters among optimization objectives. In this paper, we leverage reinforcement learning (RL) and cross-layer network coding (CLNC) for efficiently pre-fetching requested contents to the local caches and delivering these contents to requesting users in a downlink fog-radio access network (F-RAN) with device-to-device (D2D) communications. In the considered system, fog access points (F-APs) and cache-enabled D2D (CE-D2D) users are equipped with local caches that alleviate traffic burden at the fronthaul and facilitate rapid delivery of the users’ contents. To this end, the CLNC scheme optimizes the coding decisions, transmission rates, and power levels of both F-APs and CE-D2D users, and RL scheme optimizes caching strategy. A joint content placement and delivery problem is formulated as an optimization problem with a goal to maximize system sum-rate. The problem is an NP-hard problem. To efficiently solve it, we first develop an innovative decentralized CLNC coalition formation (CLNC-CF) switch algorithm to obtain a stable solution for the content delivery problem, where F-APs and CE-D2D users utilize CLNC resource allocation. By considering statistics of channel and users’ content request into account, we then develop a multi-agent RL algorithm for optimizing the content placement at both F-APs and CE-D2D users. Simulation results show that the proposed joint CLNC-CF-RL framework can effectively improve the sum-rate by up to 30%, 60%, and 150%, respectively, compared to: 1) an optimal uncoded algorithm, 2) a standard rate-aware-NC algorithm, and 3) a benchmark classical NC with network-layer optimization. In this paper, we investigate the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-aided simultaneous uplink and downlink transmission networks, where one UAV acting as a disseminator is connected to multiple access points (AP), and the other UAV acting as a base station (BS) collects data from numerous sensor nodes (SNs). The goal of this paper is to maximize the system throughput by jointly optimizing the 3D UAV trajectory, communication scheduling, and UAV-AP/SN transmit power. We first consider a special case where the UAV-BS and UAV-AP trajectories are pre-determined. Although the resulting problem is an integer and non-convex optimization problem, a globally optimal solution is obtained by applying the polyblock outer approximation (POA) method based on the problem’s hidden monotonic structure. Subsequently, for the general case considering the 3D UAV trajectory optimization, an efficient iterative algorithm is proposed to alternately optimize the divided sub-problems based on the successive convex approximation (SCA) technique. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed design is able to achieve significant system throughput gain over the benchmarks. In this paper, we investigate resource allocation for IRS-assisted green multiuser multiple-input single-output (MISO) systems. To minimize the total transmit power, both the beamforming vectors at the access point (AP) and the phase shifts at multiple IRSs are jointly optimized, while taking into account the minimum required quality-of-service (QoS) of multiple users. First, two novel algorithms, namely a penalty-based alternating minimization (AltMin) algorithm and an inner approximation (IA) algorithm, are developed to tackle the non-convexity of the formulated optimization problem when perfect channel state information (CSI) is available. Existing designs employ semidefinite relaxation in AltMin-based algorithms, which, however, cannot ensure convergence. In contrast, the proposed penalty-based AltMin and IA algorithms are guaranteed to converge to a stationary point and a Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) solution of the design problem, respectively. Second, the impact of imperfect knowledge of the CSI of the channels between the AP and the users is investigated. To this end, a non-convex robust optimization problem is formulated and the penalty-based AltMin algorithm is extended to obtain a stationary solution. Simulation results reveal a key trade-off between the speed of convergence and the achievable total transmit power for the two proposed algorithms. In addition, we show that the proposed algorithms can significantly reduce the total transmit power at the AP compared to various baseline schemes and that the optimal numbers of transmit antennas and IRS reflecting elements, which maximize the system energy efficiency of the considered system, are finite. This paper investigates the energy efficiency (EE) optimization in downlink multi-cell massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO). In our research, the statistical channel state information (CSI) is exploited to reduce the signaling overhead. To maximize the minimum EE among the neighbouring cells, we design the transmit covariance matrices for each base station (BS). Specifically, optimization schemes for this max-min EE problem are developed, in the centralized and distributed ways, respectively. To obtain the transmit covariance matrices, we first find out the closed-form optimal transmit eigenmatrices for the BS in each cell, and convert the original transmit covariance matrices designing problem into a power allocation one. Then, to lower the computational complexity, we utilize an asymptotic approximation expression for the problem objective. Moreover, for the power allocation design, we adopt the minorization maximization method to address the non-convexity of the ergodic rate, and use Dinkelbach’s transform to convert the max-min fractional problem into a series of convex optimization subproblems. To tackle the transformed subproblems, we propose a centralized iterative water-filling scheme. For reducing the backhaul burden, we further develop a distributed algorithm for the power allocation problem, which requires limited inter-cell information sharing. In this paper, an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) assisted spectrum sharing underlay cognitive radio (CR) wiretap channel (WTC) is studied, and we aim at enhancing the secrecy rate of secondary user in this channel subject to total power constraint at secondary transmitter (ST), interference power constraint (IPC) at primary receiver (PR) as well as unit modulus constraint at IRS. Due to extra IPC and eavesdropper (Eve) are considered, all the existing solutions for enhancing secrecy rate of IRS-assisted non-CR WTC as well as enhancing transmission rate in IRS-assisted CR channel without eavesdropper fail in this work. Therefore, we propose new numerical solutions to optimize the secrecy rate of this channel under full primary, secondary users’ channel state information (CSI) and three different cases of Eve’s CSI: full CSI, imperfect CSI with bounded estimation error, and no CSI. To solve the difficult non-convex optimization problem, an efficient alternating optimization (AO) algorithm is proposed to jointly optimize the beamformer at ST and phase shift coefficients at IRS. In particular, when optimizing the phase shift coefficients during each iteration of AO, a Dinkelbach based solution in combination with successive approximation and penalty based solution is proposed under full CSI and a penalty convex-concave procedure solution is proposed under imperfect Eve’s CSI. For no Eve’s CSI case, artificial noise (AN) aided approach is adopted to help enhancing the secrecy rate. Simulation results show that our proposed solutions for the IRS-assisted design greatly enhance the secrecy performance compared with the existing numerical solutions with and without IRS under full and imperfect Eve’s CSI. And positive secrecy rate can be achieved by our proposed AN aided approach given most channel realizations under no Eve’s CSI case so that secure communication also can be guaranteed. In this paper, we explore optimization-based and data-driven solutions in a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided multi-user mobile edge computing (MEC) system, where the user equipment (UEs) can partially offload their computation tasks to the access point (AP). We aim at maximizing the total completed task-input bits (TCTB) of all UEs with limited energy budgets during a given time slot, through jointly optimizing the RIS reflecting coefficients, the AP’s receive beamforming vectors, and the UEs’ energy partition strategies for local computing and offloading. A three-step block coordinate descending (BCD) algorithm is first proposed to effectively solve the non-convex TCTB maximization problem with guaranteed convergence. In order to reduce the computational complexity and facilitate lightweight online implementation of the optimization algorithm, we further construct two deep learning architectures. The first one takes channel state information (CSI) as input, while the second one exploits the UEs’ locations only for online inference. The two data-driven approaches are trained using data samples generated by the BCD algorithm via supervised learning. Our simulation results reveal a close match between the performance of the optimization-based BCD algorithm and the low-complexity learning-based architectures, all with superior performance to existing schemes in both cases with perfect and imperfect input features. Importantly, the location-only deep learning method is shown to offer a particularly practical and robust solution alleviating the need for CSI estimation and feedback when line-of-sight (LoS) direct links exist between UEs and the AP. Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is a promising new paradigm to achieve high spectral and energy efficiency for future wireless networks by reconfiguring the wireless signal propagation via passive reflection. To reap the promising gains of IRS, channel state information (CSI) is essential, whereas channel estimation errors are inevitable in practice due to limited channel training resources. In this paper, in order to optimize the performance of IRS-aided multiuser communications with imperfect CSI, we propose to jointly design the active transmit precoding at the access point (AP) and passive reflection coefficients of the IRS, each consisting of not only the conventional phase shift and also the newly exploited amplitude variation. First, the achievable rate of each user is derived assuming a practical IRS channel estimation method, which shows that the interference due to CSI errors is intricately related to the AP transmit precoders, the channel training power and the IRS reflection coefficients during both channel training and data transmission. Next, for the single-user case, by combining the benefits of the penalty method, Dinkelbach method and block successive upper-bound minimization (BSUM) method, a new penalized Dinkelbach-BSUM algorithm is proposed to optimize the IRS reflection coefficients for maximizing the achievable data transmission rate subjected to CSI errors; while for the multiuser case, a new penalty dual decomposition (PDD)-based algorithm is proposed to maximize the users’ weighted sum-rate. Finally, simulation results are presented to validate the effectiveness of our proposed algorithms as compared to benchmark schemes. Cache optimization, i.e., determining the optimal content placement and routing paths, is essential for obtaining high performance of cache-enabled networks. This paper studies the problem of optimizing system throughput and content delivery cost over cache networks with lossy links (i.e., ICN-based wireless IoT systems), where content is divided into packet-level chunks, and packets may be lost in transmission. We first propose a new performance metric – the expected overall content routing cost for satisfied requests (RCS), for better characterizing content delivery cost under packet losses. RCS at the same time possesses the attractive mathematical property of super-modularity. We then formulate an optimization problem for the task through jointly optimizing content caching and request routing, and analyze it under fixed-routing scenario. The formulated problem is NP-hard and we prove it is reducible to the one of minimizing content routing cost without packet losses. We establish rules for the reduction, and leverage existing efficient algorithm to solve the problem. We also propose a potential-based online algorithm that is simple and adaptive to traffic changes and packet losses. Fog radio access network (Fog-RAN), which pushes caching and computing capabilities to the network edge, is capable of efficiently delivering content to users by using carefully designed caching placement and content replacement algorithms. In this paper, the transmission scheme design and coding parameter optimization will be considered for coded caching in Fog-RAN, where the reliability of content delivery, i.e., content outage probability, is used as the performance metric. The problem will be formulated as a complicated multi-objective probabilistic combinatorial optimization. A novel maximum $b$ -matching approach will then be proposed to obtain the Pareto optimal solution with fairness constraint. Based on the fast message passing approach, a distributed algorithm with a low memory usage of $O(M+N)$ is also proposed, where $M$ is the number of users and $N$ is the number of fog access points (Fog-APs). Although it is usually very difficult to derive the closed-form formulas for the optimal solution, the approximation formulas of the content outage probability will also be obtained as a function of coding parameters. The asymptotic optimal coding parameters can then be obtained by defining and deriving the outage exponent region and diversity-multiplexing region. Simulation results will illustrate the accuracy of the theoretical derivations, and verify the outage performance of the proposed approach. Therefore, this paper not only proposes a practical distributed Fog-AP selection algorithm for coded caching but also provides a systematic way to evaluate and optimize the performance of Fog-RANs. This paper investigates the dynamic access point (AP) clustering and precoding problem in the downlink of user-centric virtual cell networks. The goal is to maximize the weighted sum spectral efficiency (SE) while satisfying the power constraints and AP clustering constraints in adjacent time slots (TSs). By adopting the random walk mobility to model the mobile user equipments’ movement behaviors, we consider dynamic and time-varying channel conditions. Therefore, the weighted sum SE maximization programming takes the form of discrete-time sequence of mixed-integer non-convex optimization problems. In this paper, we propose to solve this sequential problem in two stages. In the first stage, a dynamic AP clustering approach based on discrete particle swarm optimization is developed. This approach takes the advantage of the channel correlation by exploiting the relationship between AP clustering solutions in adjacent TSs to improve the SE performance and reduce complexity. In the second stage, given the AP clustering solution obtained in the first stage, a distributed precoding algorithm is devised via applying the weighted minimum mean square error method. By combining these two stages, we propose a novel dynamic AP clustering and precoding algorithm (DAPC-Pre). The effectiveness of the proposed DAPC-Pre algorithm is verified by the simulation results. In this paper, the joint spectrum sensing and resource allocation problem is investigated in a multi-band-multi-user cognitive radio (CR) network. Assuming imperfect spectrum sensing information, our goal is to jointly optimize the sensing threshold and power allocation strategy such that the average total throughput of secondary users (SUs) is maximized. In Addition, the power of SUs is constrained to keep the interference introduced to primary users under certain limit, which gives rise to a nonconvex mixed integer non-linear programming (MINLP) optimization problem. Our contribution in this paper is threefold. First, it is illustrated that the dimension of the nonconvex MINLP problem can be significantly reduced, which helps to re-formulate the optimization problem without resorting to integer variables. Second, it is demonstrated that the simplified formulation admits the canonical form of a monotonic optimization, and an $\epsilon $ -optimal solution can be achieved using the polyblock outer approximation algorithm. Third, a practical low-complexity spectrum sensing and resource allocation algorithm is developed to reduce the computational cost. This paper studies robust energy optimization for the cloud radio access network (C-RAN). The objective of this paper is to jointly minimize network power consumption through optimizing the base station (BS) mode, multi-user (MU)-BS association, and beamforming vectors given imperfect channel state information (CSI). To solve this non-trivial problem, we first transform the problem to a semi-definite programming (SDP) one using the S-lemma with the aid of the semi-definite relaxation technique, and then propose a SDP-based group sparse beamforming approach to solve it iteratively. Since the computational complexity of solving SDP problems is intractable, we propose to translate the uncertainty in the CSI to the uncertainty in its covariance matrix, and then recast the original problem as a mixed-integer second-order cone programming problem. We further propose a two-stage rank selection framework to determine the BS mode and MU-BS association separately and successively. Simulation results demonstrate the convergence of our proposed algorithms, and validate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms in minimizing the network power consumption of the C-RAN. This paper proposes a secure downlink multi-user transmission scheme enabled by a flexible unmanned aerial vehicle base station (UAV-BS) and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA). According to their heterogeneous service requirements, multiple legitimate users are categorized as security-required users (SUs) and quality of service (QoS)-required users (QUs), while these QUs can potentially act as internal eavesdroppers which are curious about the secrecy transmissions of SUs. In such a context, our goal is to maximize the achievable minimum secrecy rate among SUs through the joint optimization of user scheduling, power allocation, and trajectory design, subject to the QoS requirements of QUs and the mobility constraint of UAV-BS. Due to the non-convexity of the problem, an efficient iterative algorithm is firstly proposed, based on the alternative optimization (AO) and successive convex approximation (SCA) methods and along with a penalty-based algorithm to deal with the introduced binary integer variables, to obtain a sub-optimal solution. Then, we propose an SUs-oriented low-complexity algorithm by taking advantage of the inherent characteristics of the optimization problem, which can efficiently reduce the computational complexity and can act as a reasonable initial solution for the previous iterative algorithm to achieve better performance. In this paper, we study a joint placement, resource allocation, and user association problem for UAV-assisted wireless networks with constrained backhaul links, where multiple UAV-mounted base stations (UBSs) are deployed to provide wireless services for ground users. We propose a novel framework to maximize the user throughput within the flight-time of UBSs and provides fairness among the users. We first obtain the optimal resource allocation schemes based on different fronthaul and backhaul conditions, and an efficient iterative algorithm is then developed to jointly optimize user association and UBS placement. The optimal UBS placement can be achieved by solving an unconstrained optimization problem which is a simplification of the initial constrained optimization problem based on the optimal resource allocation. We develop a dual-domain coordinated descent and bipartite graph matching based sub-process to identify an optimal user association that prefers the nearby UBSs, as the user association under constrained backhaul links have non-unique optimal solutions. Extensive simulations are conducted to verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, and results show that our proposed method under constrained backhaul can improve both the average throughput by 49% and the fairness among the users by 47% in comparison with the method under ideal backhaul. Large-Scale Antenna System (LSAS) has played an important role in the emerging fifth-generation mobile systems (5G) due to its potential for excellent spectral efficiency. However, it may cause a mass of pilot overhead that is not conducive to the application of LSAS in massive Machine-Type Communications (mMTC), one of three typical traffic modes of 5G. In this paper, we present a pilot-efficient scheduling strategy for mMTC systems, in which the Base Stations (BS) are equipped with large-scale antennas, from a cross-layer perspective. Our scheme can not only schedule the massive devices to access the spectrum, but also allocate the BS’ power without the need for much pilot overhead. More particularly, the users allowed to access the spectrum can be selected based on their queue state information without any channel estimations, while the power allocation only needs the channel estimations for scheduled users. We shall show the optimality of the presented policy based on the Lyapunov optimization theory. To solve the Lyapunov optimization problem, we present a low complexity two-layer iteration algorithm for more practical purposes. Existing decentralized coded caching solutions cannot guarantee small loads in the general scenario with arbitrary file sizes and cache sizes. In this paper, we propose an optimization framework for decentralized coded caching in the general scenario to minimize the worst-case load and average load (under an arbitrary file popularity), respectively. Specifically, we first propose a class of decentralized coded caching schemes for the general scenario, which are specified by a general caching parameter and include several known schemes as special cases. Then, we optimize the caching parameter to minimize the worst-case load and average load, respectively. Each of the two optimization problems is a challenging nonconvex problem with a nondifferentiable objective function. For each optimization problem, we develop an iterative algorithm to obtain a stationary point using techniques for solving Complementary Geometric Programming (GP). We also obtain a low-complexity approximate solution by solving an approximate problem with a differentiable objective function which is an upper bound on the original nondifferentiable one, and characterize the performance loss caused by the approximation. Finally, we present two information-theoretic converse bounds on the worst-case load and average load (under an arbitrary file popularity) in the general scenario, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work that provides optimization-based decentralized coded caching schemes and information-theoretic converse bounds for the general scenario. Multi-view videos (MVVs) provide immersive viewing experience, at the cost of traffic load increase for wireless networks. In this paper, we would like to optimize MVV transmission in a multiuser wireless network by exploiting both natural multicast opportunities and view synthesis-enabled multicast opportunities. Specifically, we first establish a mathematical model to specify view synthesis at the server and each user, and characterize its impact on multicast opportunities. This model is highly nontrivial and fundamentally enables the optimization of view synthesis-based multicast opportunities. For given video quality requirements of all users, we consider the optimization of view selection, transmission time and power allocation to minimize the average weighted sum energy consumption for view transmission and synthesis. In addition, under the energy consumption constraints at the server and each user respectively, we consider the optimization of view selection, transmission time and power allocation and video quality selection to maximize the total utility. These two optimization problems are challenging mixed discrete-continuous optimization problems. For the first problem, we propose an algorithm to obtain an optimal solution with reduced computational complexity by exploiting optimality properties. For each problem, to reduce computational complexity, we also propose a low-complexity algorithm to obtain a suboptimal solution, using Difference of Convex (DC) programming. Finally, numerical results show the advantage of the proposed solutions over existing ones, and demonstrate the importance of the optimization of view synthesis-enabled multicast opportunities in MVV transmission. In this paper, we investigate distributed inference schemes, over binary-valued Markov random fields, which are realized by the belief propagation (BP) algorithm. We first show that a decision variable obtained by the BP algorithm in a network of distributed agents can be approximated by a linear fusion of all the local log-likelihood ratios. The proposed approach clarifies how the BP algorithm works, simplifies the statistical analysis of its behavior, and enables us to develop a performance optimization framework for the BP-based distributed inference systems. Next, we propose a blind learning-adaptation scheme to optimize the system performance when there is no information available a priori describing the statistical behavior of the wireless environment concerned. In addition, we propose a blind threshold adaptation method to guarantee a certain performance level in a BP-based distributed detection system. To clarify the points discussed, we design a novel linear-BP-based distributed spectrum sensing scheme for cognitive radio networks and illustrate the performance improvement obtained, over an existing BP-based detection method, via computer simulations. Power domain non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA), with the ability to serve multiple users within one resource block, is one of the most promising technologies for the fifth generation. In this paper, we study the downlink millimeter wave (mmWave) NOMA-based system, where the base station sends messages to multiple clusters and serves multiple users simultaneously, and sum-rate maximization problem is investigated. Since users are multiplexed on one resource block, user clustering is important for NOMA and has a great influence on sum-rate optimization problem. Inspired by correlation features of users’ spatial distributions in mmWave NOMA-based system, we introduce unsupervised learning method into user clustering. We first develop an Expectation Maximization (EM)-based algorithm in fixed user scenario. Then, the dynamic user scenario is introduced, which includes user reduction, increment and movement situations. After that, an online EM-based clustering algorithm is proposed to fast update user distribution parameters with lower computational complexity compared to the conventional complete re-clustering methods. Simulation results show that the proposed EM-based algorithm can improve the performance of NOMA-based system in fixed user scenario. In addition, the proposed online EM-based algorithm can achieve similar performance as the complete EM-based algorithm with less computational complexity in dynamic user scenario. In this paper, we investigate the energy-efficient resource allocation problem in an uplink non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) millimeter wave system, where the fully-connected-based sparse radio frequency chain antenna structure is applied at the base station (BS). To relieve the pilot overhead for channel estimation, we propose a codebook-based analog beam design scheme, which only requires to obtain the equivalent channel gain. On this basis, users belonging to the same analog beam are served via NOMA. Meanwhile, an advanced NOMA decoding scheme is proposed by exploiting the global information available at the BS. Under predefined minimum rate and maximum transmit power constraints for each user, we formulate a max-min user energy efficiency (EE) optimization problem by jointly optimizing the detection matrix at the BS and transmit power at the users. We first transform the original fractional objective function into a subtractive one. Then, we propose a two-loop iterative algorithm to solve the reformulated problem. Specifically, the inner loop updates the detection matrix and transmit power iteratively, while the outer loop adopts the bi-section method. Hardware non-idealities are among the main performance restrictions for upcoming wireless communication systems. Asymmetric hardware distortions (HWD) happen when the impairments of the I/Q branches are correlated or imbalanced, which in turn generate improper additive interference at the receiver side. When the interference is improper, as well as in other interference-limited scenarios, improper Gaussian signaling (IGS) has been shown to provide rate and/or power efficiency benefits. In this paper, we investigate the rate benefits of IGS in a two-user interference channel (IC) with additive asymmetric HWD when interference is treated as noise. We propose two iterative algorithms to optimize the parameters of the improper transmit signals. We first rewrite the rate region as an pseudo-signal-to-interference-plus-noise-ratio (PSINR) region and employ majorization minimization and fractional programming to find a suboptimal solution for the achievable user rates. Then, we propose a simplified algorithm based on a separate optimization of the powers and complementary variances of the users, which exhibits lower computational complexity. We show that IGS can improve the performance of the two-user IC with additive HWD. Key update and residence management have been investigated as an effective solution to cope with desynchronization attacks in mobility management entity (MME) handovers. In this paper, we first analyze the impacts of the key update interval (KUI) and MME residence interval (MRI) on handover processes and their secrecy performance in terms of the number of exposed packets (NEP), signaling overhead rate (SOR), and outage probability of vulnerability (OPV). Specifically, the bounds of the derived NEP and SOR not only capture their behaviors at the boundary of the KUI and MRI, but also show the tradeoff between the NEP and SOR. Additionally, through the analysis of the OPV, it is shown that the handover security can be enhanced by shortening the KUI and the desynchronization attacks can be avoided with high-mobility users. The above facts accordingly motivate us to propose a multi-objective optimization (MO) problem to find the optimal KUI and MRI that minimize both the NEP and SOR subject to the constraint on the OPV. To this end, two scalarization techniques are adapted to transform the proposed MO problem into single-objective optimization problems, i.e., an achievement-function method via fractional programming (FP) and a weighted-sum method. Based on the derived bounds on NEP and SOR, the FP approach can be optimally solved via a simple numerical method. For the weighted-sum method, the firefly algorithm (FA) is utilized to find the optimal solution. The results show that both techniques can solve the proposed MO problem with a significantly reduced searching complexity compared to the conventional heuristic iterative search technique. Hybrid analog and digital beamforming (HBF) has recently emerged as an attractive technique for millimeter-wave (mmWave) communication systems. It well balances the demand for sufficient beamforming gains to overcome the propagation loss and the desire to reduce the hardware cost and power consumption. In this paper, the mean square error (MSE) is chosen as the performance metric to characterize the transmission reliability. Using the minimum sum-MSE criterion, we investigate the HBF design for broadband mmWave transmissions. To overcome the difficulty of solving the multi-variable design problem, the alternating minimization method is adopted to optimize the hybrid transmit and receive beamformers alternatively. Specifically, a manifold optimization-based HBF algorithm is first proposed, which directly handles the constant modulus constraint of the analog component. Its convergence is then proved. To reduce the computational complexity, we then propose a low-complexity general eigenvalue decomposition-based HBF algorithm in the narrowband scenario and three algorithms via the eigenvalue decomposition and orthogonal matching pursuit methods in the broadband scenario. A particular innovation in our proposed alternating minimization algorithms is a carefully designed initialization method, which leads to a faster convergence. Furthermore, we extend the sum-MSE-based design to that with weighted sum-MSE, which is then connected to the spectral efficiency-based design. In this paper, an optimization problem to maximize the energy efficiency of a hybrid automatic repeat request with incremental redundancy (HARQ-IR) is considered for massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. Because a sum rate for multiple HARQ-IR rounds is approximated by a Gaussian distribution, a problem maximizing energy efficiency becomes tractable. In particular, a simplified form of energy efficiency for massive MIMO transmissions with an HARQ-IR protocol is derived using an outage probability, which is given by a tail probability of the Gaussian distribution. By exploiting the proposed simplified form, we show that the energy efficiency of the system is approximated by a piecewise quasi-concave function. Using these properties, an algorithm finding the optimal transmission power and number of transmission rounds for maximizing energy efficiency is proposed. Moreover, we show that the optimal number of HARQ transmission rounds can be less than the maximum allowable retransmissions when considering the constant power consumption of the massive MIMO system with an HARQ-IR protocol. Dynamic network architectures (DNAs) have been developed under the assumption that some terminals can be converted into temporary access points (APs) anytime when connected to the Internet. In this paper, we consider the problem of assigning a group of users to a set of potential APs with the aim to maximize the downlink system throughput of DNA networks, subject to total transmit power and users’ quality of service (QoS) constraints. In our first method, we relax the integer optimization variables to be continuous. The resulting non-convex continuous optimization problem is solved using successive convex approximation framework to arrive at a sequence of second-order cone programs (SOCPs). In the next method, the selection process is viewed as finding a sparsity constrained solution to our problem of sum rate maximization. It is demonstrated in numerical results that while the first approach has better data rates for dense networks, the sparsity oriented method has a superior speed of convergence. Moreover, for the scenarios considered, in addition to comprehensively outperforming some well-known approaches, our algorithms yield data rates close to those obtained by branch and bound method. In mobile opportunistic networks, a common assumption is that nodes are able to complete as much data exchange as needed during a communication opportunity, which is, however, not the case in practice due to limited wireless link bandwidth. Beyond that, the storage capacity at a node is also limited, further impacting the communication efficiency. In this paper, we explore delay sensitive and network resource constrained traffic allocation for mobile device-to-device crowdsourcing. With the requirement of restricted node storage and link bandwidth, we first formulate a non-linear traffic allocation optimization problem that would be at least as hard as NP-hard. In order to practically solve it, based on the submodular property, we propose an approximation algorithm and a distributed heuristic in the same design principle. We implement the latter on Dell Streak tablets and deploy an experiment with 21 nodes for a period of three weeks. Moreover, we extract the implementation codes from the prototype and run simulations using the Haggle trace to study its performance trend. The experiment and simulation outcomes verify that the proposed mechanisms achieve the close-to-optimal performance with affordable computation complexity, which can be easily implanted in practical network environment. Motivated by the work of Dahrouj and Yu in applying the Han-Kobayashi transmission strategy for mitigating the intercell interference in a multi-cell multi-user multiple-input single-output interference network (MISO IN), this paper considers splitting messages into private and common parts in a multi-cell multi-user MIMO IN. Specifically, the covariances of the private messages and common messages are designed to optimize either the sum rate or the minimal rate. The common messages and private messages are decoded in sequence using successive decoding. This paper shows how these difficult optimization problems can be adequately solved by means of d.c. (difference of concave functions) optimization over a simple convex set. Numerical and simulation results also reveal the great advantage of our proposed solutions for various types of INs. In this paper, we consider a cooperative diffusion-based molecular communication (MC) network consisting of single source, single decode-and-forward relay, and single destination. The source and the relay nodes use different types of molecules for information transmission. Considering both the relay and the direct links at the destination node, we have two different received signals that can be used by the destination node to retrieve the data transmitted by the source node. Therefore, diversity arises at the destination node. For detection, we adopt the energy detector applying the diversity combining technique. Since the optimum relay position in relay-aided networks plays a crucial role to enhance their performance, we study the relay location optimization problem. We first derive a closed-form expression for the bit error probability of the proposed detection scheme in which the received energy from the source and the relay nodes are linearly combined at the destination node. Then, in order to find the optimum relay position as well as the optimal destination decision threshold for a given number of molecules released by the source and the relay nodes, we formulate a joint optimization problem whose objective is to minimize the bit error probability of the network. To solve this optimization problem, we propose an iterative algorithm based on the block coordinate descent algorithm and study its convergence behavior. Numerical results show that the error performance can be improved by optimizing the position of the relay node. Our analyses help us in designing a reliable cooperative diffusion-based MC network. This paper investigates the problem of dynamic spectrum access for canonical wireless networks, in which the channel states are time-varying. In the most existing work, the commonly used optimization objective is to maximize the expectation of a certain metric (e.g., throughput or achievable rate). However, it is realized that expectation alone is not enough since some applications are sensitive to fluctuations. Effective capacity is a promising metric for time-varying service process since it characterizes the packet delay violating probability (regarded as an important statistical quality-of-service index), by taking into account not only the expectation but also other high-order statistic. Therefore, we formulate the interactions among the users in the time-varying environment as a non-cooperative game, in which the utility function is defined as the achieved effective capacity. We prove that it is an ordinal potential game which has at least one pure strategy Nash equilibrium. Based on an approximated utility function, we propose a multi-agent learning algorithm which is proved to achieve stable solutions with dynamic and incomplete information constraints. The convergence of the proposed learning algorithm is verified by simulation results. Also, it is shown that the proposed multi-agent learning algorithm achieves satisfactory performance. In this paper, we investigate the linear transceiver optimization for multiple-inputmultiple-output (MIMO) interference networks, where multiple pairs of multi-antenna source and destination nodes communicate simultaneously. Different from most of existing works, we jointly consider three critical issues of the linear transceiver optimization for MIMO interference networks based on multi-objective optimization theory, i.e., signal transmission, energy and security. Specifically, using the modified weighted Tchebycheff method, we investigate three kinds of multi-objective optimization problems (MOOPs): 1) sum mean square error minimization and harvested energy maximization; 2) transmit power minimization and energy harvesting efficiency maximization; 3) transmit power minimization, energy harvesting efficiency maximization, and physical layer security. Based on the Charnes–Cooper transformation and penalty function method, the formulated MOOPs are transformed into convex optimization problems and thus can be effectively solved. The resulting Pareto optimal solutions set reveals the complicated but important relationships among these involved single objective optimization problems, which are usually individually investigated in the literature. In this paper, we investigate the design of linear precoders for simultaneously wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) in a multi-input multi-output (MIMO) broadcasting system with discrete input signals. The considered system model consists of one base station (BS), one information receiver (IR), and one energy receiver (ER). The design objective is to maximize the input–output mutual information of the IR subject to the power constraint and the harvested energy requirement for the ER. We derive the structure of the optimal linear precoder by using manifold optimization, and propose an algorithm to find the optimal precoder. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can achieve better performance than the time sharing scheme and the Gaussian optimal precoder when Gaussian inputs are replaced by discrete input signals. In this paper, we propose a joint source-relay precoding scheme to secure an amplify-and-forward multiple-input multiple-output wireless relay network in the existence of a multi-antenna eavesdropper. Different from existing works that only consider some specific signal design to simplify the problem, we take both the direct links from the source to the destination and to the eavesdropper into account, and investigate the general joint signal covariance matrices optimization problem to maximize the secrecy rate, which leads to a difficult non-convex optimization problem. To handle it, we propose a group alternating optimization algorithm to find a solution, which alternately optimizes the signal covariance matrix and the linear precoding matrix at the source and the relay, respectively. For optimizing the linear precoding matrix at the relay, the problem is still non-convex, and we propose a minorization–maximization (MM) method to handle it. The MM method transforms the original non-convex problem into a series of convex problems and guarantees the convergence of a local optimum. For optimizing the signal covariance matrix at the source, we reveal the convex–concave property of the problem, and find its global optimum using a barrier method combined with the Newton iteration. We also provide an initialization method to trigger the algorithm and analyze the convergence and complexity. In wireless network resource allocation, the radio power control problems are often solved by fixed point algorithms. Although these algorithms give feasible problem solutions, such solutions often lack notion of problem optimality. This paper reconsiders well-known fixed-point algorithms, such as those with standard and type-II standard interference functions, and investigates the conditions under which they give optimal solutions. The optimality is established by the recently proposed fast-Lipschitz optimization framework. To apply such a framework, the analysis is performed by a logarithmic transformation of variables that gives tractable fast-Lipschitz problems. It is shown how the logarithmic problem constraints are contractive by the standard or type-II standard assumptions on the power control problem, and how sets of cost functions fulfill the fast-Lipschitz qualifying conditions. The analysis on nonmonotonic interference function allows establishing a new qualifying condition for fast-Lipschitz optimization. The results are illustrated by considering power control problems with standard interference function, problems with type-II standard interference functions, and a case of subhomogeneous power control problems. Given the generality of fast-Lipschitz optimization compared to traditional methods for resource allocation, it is concluded that such an optimization may help to determine the optimality of many resource allocation problems in wireless networks. Optimal signaling for secrecy rate maximization in Gaussian MIMO wiretap channels is considered. While this channel has attracted a significant attention recently and a number of results have been obtained, including the proof of the optimality of Gaussian signalling, an optimal transmit covariance matrix is known for some special cases only and the general case remains an open problem. An iterative custom-made algorithm to find a globally-optimal transmit covariance matrix in the general case is developed in this paper, with guaranteed convergence to a global optimum. While the original optimization problem is not convex and hence difficult to solve, its minimax reformulation can be solved via the convex optimization tools, which is exploited here. The proposed algorithm is based on the barrier method extended to deal with a minimax problem at hand. Its convergence to a global optimum is proved for the general case (degraded or not) and a bound for the optimality gap is given for each step of the barrier method. The performance of the algorithm is demonstrated via numerical examples. In particular, 20 to 40 Newton steps are already sufficient to solve the sufficient optimality conditions with very high precision (up to the machine precision level), even for large systems. Even fewer steps are required if the secrecy capacity is the only quantity of interest. The algorithm can be significantly simplified for the degraded channel case and can also be adopted to include the per-antenna power constraints (instead or in addition to the total power constraint). In this paper, we tackle the problem of multi-cell resource scheduling, where the objective is to maximize the weighted sum-rate through inter-cell interference coordination (ICIC). The blanking method is used to mitigate the inter-cell interference, where a resource is either used with a predetermined transmit power or not used at all, i.e., blanked. This problem is known to be strongly NP-hard, which means that it is not only hard to solve in polynomial time, but it is also hard to find an approximation algorithm with guaranteed optimality gap. In this work, we identify special scenarios where a polynomial-time algorithm can be constructed to solve this problem with theoretical guarantees. In particular, we define a dominant interference environment, in which for each user the received power from each interferer is significantly greater than the aggregate received power from all other weaker interferers. We show that the originally strongly NP-hard problem can be tightly relaxed to a linear programming problem in a dominant interference environment. Consequently, we propose a polynomial time distributed algorithm that is not only guaranteed to be tight in a dominant interference environment, but which also computes an upper bound on the optimality gap without additional computational complexity. The proposed scheme is based on the primal-decomposition method, where the problem is divided into a master-problem and multiple subproblems. We solve the master-problem iteratively using the projected-subgradient method. We also show that each subproblem has a special network flow structure. By exploiting this network structure, each subproblem is solved using the network-based optimization methods, which significantly reduces the complexity in comparison to the general-purpose convex or linear optimization methods. In comparison with baseline schemes, simulation results of the International Mobile Telecommunications-Advanced (IMT-Advanced) scenarios show that the proposed scheme achieves higher gains in aggregate throughput, cell-edge throughput, and outage probability. Cloud services based on data center networks (DCNs) require a transmission infrastructure with high-capacity, low-latency, low-cost and high-availability, which can be offered by survivable optical networks. DCN placement is a fundamental issue in supporting cloud services in optical networks. It concerns not only the cost of providing cloud services, but also the service availability against failures via proper service replicas. In this paper, we jointly optimize DCN placement with service routing and protection to minimize the network cost, while ensuring fast protection of all services against any single link failure or service failure at a particular DCN. An ILP (Integer Linear Program) is first formulated to achieve optimal joint design. It integrates p-cycle (preconfigured protection cycle) for fast protection against a single link failure, and DCN replicas and fast service rerouting against a service failure. To make the design more scalable, a two-step heuristic is then proposed for large-size network scenarios. The first step separately solves the DCN placement and service routing problem in the failure-free scenario, and the second step takes fast service protection into account. Iterative clipping and filtering (ICF) is a well-known technique to reduce the peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signals. Recently, Wang and Luo investigated the clipped signal and proposed a modified algorithm called optimized ICF (OICF). This is an optimal algorithm since it can achieve the required PAPR reduction with minimum in-band distortion and far fewer iterations. However, OICF needs to solve a convex optimization problem with O(N^3) complexity, where N represents the number of subcarriers. In this paper, instead of analyzing the clipped signal, we study the clipping noise and propose a simplified OICF algorithm. In the new algorithm, solving the convex optimization problem is approximated by some simple algebraic operations and the computational complexity reduces to O(N). Simulation results show that after three iterations, the original OICF algorithm can achieve the desired PAPR while the simplified one exhibits almost the same performance: for a 128-subcarrier and quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) modulated OFDM system, the PAPR-reduction performance difference between the two algorithms are 5x10^-3dB at a 10^-4 clipping probability and the bit-error-rate performance difference is 6x10^-3dB at a 10^-7 error probability. Existing minimum-symbol-error-rate equalizers were derived based on the symbol-error-rate objective function. Due to the complexity of the objective function the derivation is not straightforward. In this paper we present a new approach to derive the minimum-symbol-error-rate adaptive equalizers. The problem is formulated as minimizing the norm between two subsequent parameter vectors under the constraint of symbol-error-rate minimization. The constrained optimization problem then is solved with the Lagrange multiplier method, which results in an adaptive algorithm with normalization. Natural type selection was originally proposed by Zamir and Rose for universal single description coding. In this paper, we generalize this principle to universal multiple description coding (MDC). Two schemes based on random codebooks are proposed: one is of fixed distortion and the other is of fixed weight. Their operational sum-rate-distortion functions are derived, which coincide with the EGC (El Gamal-Cover) sum-rate bound if the parameters of the schemes are optimized. It is also shown that in both schemes the joint type of reconstruction codewords can be used to improve the rate-distortion (R-D) performance. Based on our theoretical results, a practical universal scheme is proposed by leveraging the MDC methods based on low-density generator matrix (LDGM) codes. In this paper we consider orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) based cognitive radio systems that operate as secondary users (SUs) in a spectrum overlay approach and study joint spectral shaping and power control subject to specified target signal-to-interference+noise ratio (SINR) as a constrained optimization problem. We discuss necessary and sufficient conditions for the optimal solution of this problem where the spectrum overlay constraints are satisfied and the specified target SINR value is achieved with minimum transmit power. The Shannon code is a very simple suboptimal scheme for computing prefix-free codelengths for a given memoryless source. A recursive version of the well-known Shannon code (RSh) is investigated in this paper. It has a redundancy which never exceeds that of the Shannon code. Unlike the Huffman code, the RSh code and its variations can be directly applied to sources with an infinitely countable alphabet. The average redundancy, taken over the set of all n-tuple distributions, is considered as a criterion for code comparisons. For n>40, the average redundancy is approximately 0.14 bits for the RSh code, compared to approximately 0.5 and 0.03 bits for the Shannon and Huffman codes, respectively. For large n, a constrained version of the RSh code, called CRSh, has an average redundancy of only 0.07 bits for unsorted symbol probabilities. If the symbol probabilities are sorted in descending order, then a very simple modification of the RSh algorithm results in a code which is near-optimal from the average redundancy point of view. In code-division multiplexing, the real/complex-valued sequence (signature) that maximizes the pre-detection signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) at the output of the maximum-SINR filter is simply the minimum-eigenvalue eigenvector of the disturbance autocorrelation matrix. SINR sequence optimization over a finite alphabet, however, is NP-hard in the sequence length. This paper presents a joint subcarrier and power allocation algorithm for cooperative multiuser orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MU-OFDM) cognitive radio (CR) systems. By simplifying a three-node relay network to a two-node network with the equivalent channel gain, we formulate the resource allocation problem for a cooperative MU-OFDM CR system in a similar form to that for a non-cooperative MU-OFDM CR system. With this problem formulation, a rule is derived for performing subcarrier assignment operations under a given power distribution, where the sum capacity optimization is alternated between the subcarrier and power to form a joint subcarrier and power allocation algorithm. To simplify the high-complexity optimal power allocation algorithm (i.e., the iterative partitioned water-filling algorithm) for the joint scheme, we further develop a simple method for updating the water level when each subcarrier is assigned. Simulation results show that, with or without cooperative transmission, using the proposed method to update the water level achieves a system capacity close to that of the joint subcarrier and power allocation algorithm with the optimal power distribution. In this paper, we address the issue of multiaccess communication through multi-hop linear non-regenerative relays, where all users, all relay nodes, and the destination node may have multiple antennas. Using a linear minimal mean-squared error (MMSE) receiver at the destination node, we demonstrate that the optimal amplifying matrix at each relay node can be viewed as a linear MMSE filter concatenated with another linear filter. As a consequence, the MSE matrix of the signal waveform estimation at the destination node is decomposed into the sum of the MSE matrices at all relay nodes. We show that at a high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) environment, this MSE matrix decomposition significantly simplifies the solution to the problem of optimizing the source precoding matrices and relay amplifying matrices. Simulation results show that even at the low to medium SNR range, the simplified optimization algorithms have only a marginal performance degradation but a greatly reduced computational complexity and signalling overhead compared with the existing optimal iterative algorithm, and thus are of great interest for practical relay systems. In this paper, we study the capacity-achieving input covariance matrices for the multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) uplink channel under jointly-correlated Rician fading when perfect channel state information (CSI) is known at the receiver, or CSIR while only statistical CSI at the transmitter, or CSIT, is available. The jointly-correlated MIMO channel (or the Weichselberger model) accounts for the correlation at two link ends and is shown to be highly accurate to model real channels. Classically, numerical techniques together with Monte-Carlo methods (named stochastic programming) are used to resolve the problem concerned but at a high computational cost. To tackle this, we derive the asymptotic sum-rate of the multiuser (MU) MIMO uplink channel in the large-system regime where the numbers of antennas at the transmitters and the receiver go to infinity with constant ratios. This paper discusses a special type of multi-user communication scenario, in which users' utilities are linearly impacted by their competitors' actions. First, we explicitly characterize the Nash equilibrium and Pareto boundary of the achievable utility region. Second, the price of anarchy incurred by the non-collaborative Nash strategy is quantified. Third, to improve the performance in the non-cooperative scenarios, we investigate the properties of an alternative solution concept named conjectural equilibrium, in which individual users compensate for their lack of information by forming internal beliefs about their competitors. The global convergence of the best response and Jacobi update dynamics that achieve various conjectural equilibria is analyzed. It is shown that the Pareto boundaries of the investigated linearly coupled games can be sustained as stable conjectural equilibria if the belief functions are properly initialized. In this paper, we consider beamforming (BF) for cooperative networks with one multi—antenna source, multiple multi—antenna amplify—and—forward (AF) relays, and one single—antenna destination. The source BF vector and the AF—BF matrices at the relays are optimized for maximization of the signal—to—noise ratio (SNR) at the destination under three different power constraints. In particular, we consider individual relay power constraints, a joint relay power constraint, and a joint power constraint for the source and the relays. We solve the associated optimization problems in two stages. In the first stage, we find the optimal AF—BF matrices for a given BF vector at the source. For the cases of individual and joint relay power constraints, closed—form solutions for the AF—BF matrices are provided, respectively. Furthermore, for the case of a joint source—relay power constraint, the AF—BF matrices are obtained in closed form up to a scalar power allocation factor and an efficient numerical algorithm for the power allocation between the source and the relays is given. In the second stage, the optimal source BF vectors are computed. Thereby, we show that for the joint relay and the joint source—relay power constraints, the resulting problem can be transformed into a non—convex polynomial programming problem which allows for an exact solution for small—scale networks. For large—scale networks and networks with individual relay power constraints, we propose efficient suboptimal optimization methods for the source BF vector. Simulation results show the benefits of having multiple antennas at the source and/or multiple multi—antenna relays and illustrate the performance differences introduced by the three different power constraints. This paper considers the optimization of a class of joint source-channel codes described by finite-state encoders (FSEs) generating variable-length codes. It focuses on FSEs associated to joint source-channel integer arithmetic codes, which are uniquely decodable codes by design. An efficient method for computing the free distance of such codes using Dijkstra's algorithm is proposed. To facilitate the search for codes with good distance properties, FSEs are organized within a tree structure, which allows the use of efficient branch-and-prune techniques avoiding a search of the whole tree. In this paper, we consider the problem of resource allocation in the DFT-Spread-OFDMA (DFT-S-OFDMA) uplink. We show that the resource allocation problem can be formulated as a set packing problem, which in general is NP-hard. We propose polynomial-time message-passing based algorithms, one of which is guaranteed to yield a solution that is within a constant fraction of the optimal solution and is also asymptotically optimal in the limit as the number of subcarriers in the system goes to infinity. The message-passing based algorithm is also extended to solve the resource allocation problem over a multi-cell uplink in a distributed fashion. Our algorithms account for finite input alphabets and non-ideal practical outer codes. Extensive simulations are performed to assess the performance of the proposed algorithms and it is shown that they yield near-optimal solutions at a low complexity and with a low memory requirement.
