In conventional multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) systems with frequency division duplexing (FDD), channel acquisition and precoder optimization processes have been designed separately although they are highly coupled. This paper studies an end-to-end design of downlink MU-MIMO systems which include pilot sequences, limited feedback, and precoding. To address this problem, we propose a novel deep learning (DL) framework which jointly optimizes the feedback information generation at users and the precoder design at a base station (BS). Each procedure in the MU-MIMO systems is replaced by intelligently designed multiple deep neural networks (DNN) units. At the BS, a neural network generates pilot sequences and helps the users obtain accurate channel state information. At each user, the channel feedback operation is carried out in a distributed manner by an individual user DNN. Then, another BS DNN collects feedback information from the users and determines the MIMO precoding matrices. A joint training algorithm is proposed to optimize all DNN units in an end-to-end manner. In addition, a training strategy which can avoid retraining for different network sizes for a scalable design is proposed. In this paper, we consider an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-assisted cognitive radio system and maximize the secondary user (SU) rate by jointly optimizing the transmit power of secondary transmitter (ST) and the IRS’s reflect beamforming, subject to the constraints of the minimum required signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio at the primary receiver, the ST’s maximum transmit power, and the unit modulus of the IRS reflect beamforming vector. This joint optimization problem can be solved suboptimally by the non-convex optimization techniques, which however usually require complicated mathematical transformations and are computationally intensive. To address this challenge, we propose an algorithm based on the deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) method. To achieve a higher learning efficiency and a lower reward variance, we propose another algorithm based on the soft actor-critic (SAC) method. In these proposed algorithms, a reward impact adjustment approach is proposed to improve their learning efficiency and stability. Simulation results show that the two proposed algorithms can achieve comparable SU rate performance with much shorter running time, as compared to the existing non-convex optimization-based benchmark algorithm, and that the proposed SAC-based algorithm learns faster and achieves a higher average reward with lower variance, as compared to the proposed DDPG-based algorithm. Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is an emerging cost-efficient technology to enhance communication performance by implementing a large number of passive reflecting elements with tunable phases in wireless systems. In this paper, we propose a general framework for the IRS-aided MIMO system designs under both single-user and multi-user setups, in which the diverse performance metrics including weighted mutual information and weighted MSE, and the realistic multiple weighted power constraint are taken into consideration. Leveraging the alternating optimization approach, the optimal IRS phase shifts are obtained in semi-closed forms. Specifically, based on the matrix-monotonic optimization theory, it is found that optimizing IRS phase shifts is essentially equivalent to tuning the eigenvalues and the corresponding eigenvectors of the MSE matrix. Then the proposed general framework is extended to a multi-user system by introducing a majorization-minimization (MM)-based method for IRS phase shift optimization. Simulation results show that our proposed optimal design brings significant enhancement on the chosen performance metric compared to the traditional MIMO systems without the IRS, and also significantly outperforms various benchmark designs in both single-user and multi-user systems. This paper considers the finite-order filter design problem for the source and multiple full-duplex (FD) relays in a cooperative communication system under frequency-selective fading channels. The goal is to optimize the source and relay filters such that the end-to-end signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) of minimum mean-squared error decision-feedback equalizer (MMSE-DFE) can be maximized. The resultant design problem is very difficult since we need to deal with self interference (SI), inter-relay interference (IRI), and inter-symbol interference (ISI) at the same time. Novel designs are then proposed to overcome the difficulty in this work. Transforming the signals into the frequency domain and using some optimization techniques, we first theoretically derive the power spectrum of the source filter and the spectrums of the relay filters. Then, the finite-order design is developed to approach the derived spectrums. Based on the weighted least-square (WLS) criterion, the Steiglitz-McBride method is exploited to obtain the filter coefficients in finite lengths. Numerical results demonstrated that complete removal of SI may not be a good strategy; preserving a certain amount of SI at each relay instead provides better SINR performance. In this paper, we consider a multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system aided by multiple intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs) that are deployed to increase the coverage and, possibly, the rank of the channel. We propose an optimization algorithm to configure the IRSs, which is aimed at maximizing the network sum-rate by exploiting only the statistical characterization of the locations of the mobile users. As a consequence, the proposed approach does not require the estimation of either instantaneous channel state information (CSI) or second-order channel statistics for IRS optimization, thus significantly relaxing (or even avoiding) the need of frequently reconfiguring the IRSs, which constitutes one of the most critical issues in IRS-assisted systems. Numerical results confirm the validity of the proposed approach. It is shown, in particular, that IRS-assisted wireless systems that are optimized based on statistical position information still provide large performance gains as compared to the baseline scenarios in which no IRSs are deployed. Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) that enables the control of wireless propagation environment has recently emerged as a promising cost-effective technology for boosting the spectral and energy efficiency of future wireless communication systems. Prior works on IRS are mainly based on the ideal phase shift model assuming full signal reflection by each of its elements regardless of the phase shift, which, however, is practically difficult to realize. In contrast, we propose in this paper a practical phase shift model that captures the phase-dependent amplitude variation in the element-wise reflection design. Based on the proposed model and considering an IRS-aided multiuser system with one IRS deployed to assist in the downlink communications from a multi-antenna access point (AP) to multiple single-antenna users, we formulate an optimization problem to minimize the total transmit power at the AP by jointly designing the AP transmit beamforming and the IRS reflect beamforming, subject to the users’ individual signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) constraints. Iterative algorithms are proposed to find suboptimal solutions to this problem efficiently by utilizing the alternating optimization (AO) as well as penalty-based optimization techniques. Moreover, to draw essential insight, we analyze the asymptotic performance loss of the IRS-aided system that employs practical phase shifters but assumes the ideal phase shift model for beamforming optimization, as the number of IRS elements goes to infinity. Simulation results unveil substantial performance gains achieved by the proposed beamforming optimization based on the practical phase shift model as compared to the conventional ideal model. The emergence of interference alignment (IA) as a degrees-of-freedom optimal strategy motivates the need to investigate whether IA can be leveraged to aid conventional network utility maximization algorithms, which are typically only capable of finding locally optimal solutions. To test the usefulness of IA in this context, this paper proposes a two-stage optimization framework for the downlink of a $G$ -cell multi-antenna network with $K$ users/cell. The first stage of the proposed framework focuses on nulling interference from a set of dominant interferers using IA, while the second stage optimizes transmit and receive beamformers to maximize a network-wide utility using the IA solution as the initial condition. Further, this paper establishes a set of new feasibility results for partial IA that can be used to guide the number of dominant interferers to be nulled in the first stage. Through simulations on specific topologies of a cluster of base stations, it is observed that the impact of IA depends on the choice of the utility function and the presence of out-of-cluster interference. In the absence of out-of-cluster interference, the proposed framework outperforms straightforward optimization when maximizing the minimum rate, while providing marginal gains when maximizing sum rate. Coordinated multipoint transmission (CoMP) and soft frequency reuse (SFR) techniques are two common mechanisms that are often combined with the aim of reducing the deleterious effects caused by inter-cell interference in current and envisaged cellular networks (4G/5G). The performance of this combined mechanism has been shown to be strongly influenced by the specific choice of the parameters determining the frequency reuse settings. So far, their optimization has relied on time-consuming simulations that make the CoMP-SFR optimization a challenging issue. In an attempt to revert this situation, this paper introduces a novel analytical framework that, for a specific set of SFR parameters, allows the computation of closed-form approximations to relevant performance metrics such as average total capacity, worst-users rate, and backhaul requirements. Remarkably, these approximations exhibit a dependence on the SFR parameters that match that of the true metrics, hence allowing the optimization of the SFR-related parameters based on the proposed analytical expressions. Furthermore, and very important from a practical perspective, the availability of these closed-form expressions allows the efficient application of multi-objective optimization techniques to realistic scenarios with irregularly deployed base stations that serve to evaluate the various tradeoffs the designer is facing when optimizing multiple, and often conflictive, performance metrics. In this paper, we investigate joint level 2 and 3 dynamic spectrum management (joint DSM 2/3) for downstream (DS) DSL. We consider a DS scenario in which users are divided into a few separate groups, where vector encoding based signal coordination can be applied in each group and spectrum coordination is possible for all users. This can be seen as a mixed interference/broadcast channel (IF/BC) scenario. In order to obtain the optimal transmitter structure, we develop a generalized duality between the vector broadcast and multiple-access channel (MAC) for scenarios in which partial signal coordination is available among users. This theory together with optimal spectrum balancing (OSB) is exploited to calculate the jointly optimal filters and transmit powers for non-linear vector dirty paper coding structures (in the form of Tomlinson-Harashima precoder (THP)) in the groups. The proposed scheme is compared to several other joint DSM 2/3 algorithms for DS DSL. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme (referred to as the IF/BC-OSB algorithm) achieves considerably higher bit rates than the other schemes. IF/BC-OSB encompasses the earlier developed BC-OSB algorithm as a special case. A simplified version of IF/BC-OSB avoiding exhaustive search with near-optimal performance is also proposed. This paper focuses on distributed linear precoding when users transmit correlated information over a fading multiple-input and multiple-output multiple access channel. The precoders are optimized in order to minimize the sum-mean square error (MSE) between the source and the estimated symbols. When sources are correlated, minimizing the sum-MSE results in a non-convex optimization problem. The precoders for an arbitrary number of users and transmit and receive antennas are thus obtained via a projected steepest-descent algorithm and a low-complexity heuristic approach. For the more restrictive case of two single-antenna users, a closed-form expression for the minimum sum-MSE precoders is derived. Moreover, for the scenario with a single receive antenna and any number of users, a solution is obtained by means of a semi-definite relaxation. Finally, we also consider precoding schemes where the precoders are decomposed into complex scalars and unit norm vectors. Simulation results show a significant improvement when source correlation is exploited at precoding, especially for low signal-to-noise ratios and when the number of receive antennas is lower than the number of transmitting nodes. We consider optimal linear precoder and decoder designs in a multi-cell multiple-input multiple-output system, where base stations and mobile users are both operating in full-duplex (FD) mode. Existing works on FD cellular systems focus on the maximization of overall throughput, which can result in unfairness between uplink and downlink channels depending on the self-interference power and inter-user interference levels. Therefore, to introduce fairness, in this paper, we consider the transmit and receive beamforming designs that maximize the harmonic-sum of signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratios (SINRs) in the uplink and downlink channels. We propose a low-complexity alternating optimization algorithm which converges to a stationary point. Moreover, in order to address practical system design aspects, we consider the transceiver design that enforces robustness against imperfect channel state information (CSI) while providing fair performance among the users. To this end, we formulate an optimization problem that maximizes the worst case SINR among all users under norm-bounded CSI errors. We devise a low-complexity iterative algorithm based on alternating optimization and semidefinite relaxation techniques. Traditional cellular networks are moving toward heterogeneous cellular networks (HetNets) to satisfy the stringent demand for data rates and capacity. To enable the new applications in 5G, such as haptic communications, we face new challenges of achieving high availability with low latency in HetNets. In this paper, we introduce coordinated multi-point (CoMP) and carrier aggregation (CA) techniques in HetNets to guarantee the availability of all user equipment (UE), where the CoMP improves the single-path availability, and the CA enhances availability via multi-carrier gain combining. To characterize the availability, we first derive an exact closed-form expression for the availability of a random UE in a CoMP and CA-enabled HetNets. To achieve the maximum UE availability, we formulate a max-min optimization problem. To solve it, we then propose a two-step optimization algorithm (TSOA) and a joint (JTOA). The TSOA is based on heuristic algorithm for the optimal subcarrier assignment and UE association, and based on the Lagrangian dual method for the power allocation. The JTOA is based on genetic algorithm to achieve the interaction between the first step and the second step. In this paper, we present a joint antenna beamforming and power allocation technique to maximize the multiuser sum rate in an underlying microcellular system which reuses the same spectrum of a macrocellular system. One challenge in this kind of hierarchical cognitive radio (HCR) systems is to manage the interference between the macrocell and the microcell. The key contribution of this paper is to develop an optimization technique for antenna beamforming that can maximize the achievable sum rate of the underlying cognitive radio (CR) microcellular system and control the interference between the macrocell and the microcell with a satisfaction level. The proposed technique optimizes the sum rate performance by maximizing its lower bound and transfers the original non-convex problem into a convex optimization problem by introducing auxiliary variables to confine the intra-user interference power among the secondary system. Next, an iterative sum rate maximization (ISM) algorithm is developed to find the beamforming weights and the allocated power for each secondary user to simultaneously maximize system sum rate, coverage, and concurrent multiuser transmission probability in the HCR system. The developed joint design methodology provides valuable insights into the design of an optimal HCR system for various numbers of users as well as cell coverage, and can quantitatively optimize the performance tradeoffs in the hierarchical multiuser CR systems for current and future wireless communication applications. Increasing spectrum-efficiency (SE) as well as energy-efficiency (EE) has attracted much attention recently due to the fact that the future wireless networks need to address the issues of high throughput and low power consumption. However, the objective for optimizing SE sometimes conflicts with the one for optimizing EE, and the methods for improving EE may result in a decrease in SE. In this paper, we consider the SE-EE tradeoff for cognitive radio (CR) networks with co-operative spectrum sensing (CSS). First, we formulate the general problem, and analyze two special cases: the SE maximization problem and the EE maximization problem. The SE and EE are optimized separately via joint optimization of sensing duration and final decision threshold in CSS. Based on the solutions of the two special cases, the general problem for SE-EE tradeoff is solved. Then, we consider the tradeoff of SE and EE from two perspectives: (1) maximizing EE while satisfying SE requirement; and (2) maximizing SE while satisfying EE requirement. Efficient algorithms for sensing strategy design are proposed for each scenario. In this paper, we consider multiple-input single-output (MISO) physical layer multicasting, where several multiantenna transmitters each simultaneously multicast a common message to a distinct set of single-antenna receivers, causing interference between different multicast messages. To optimize the achievable rate of this MISO multicast interference channel, we propose iterative distributed transmit optimization algorithms that are based on interference leakage control, requiring local channel state information at each transmitter and leakage information exchange among transmitters. We, furthermore, propose extensions of existing coordinated multipoint transmission schemes that have been developed for unicast interference channels, such as signal to leakage and noise ratio beamforming, to the considered multicast system. Such methods are of importance, e.g., for future releases of LTE that will support multiantenna multicasting using MBMS/MBSFN. Full-duplex transmission is a promising technique to enhance the capacity of relay communications. In this paper, we investigate the power and location optimization for full-duplex decode-and-forward (DF) relaying systems. The outage probability is adopted as the optimization criterion and a two-dimensional (2D) optimization problem is formulated for systems with and without the direct source–destination link. Analytical and numerical results are provided to demonstrate advantages of the power and location optimization. More interestingly, the effect of residual self-interference (RSI) introduced by full-duplex transmission is investigated in terms of the optimal power allocation and relay location deployment and the outage probability performance improvement. Furthermore, we show that the minimal outage probability can be achieved via joint power-location optimization. In this paper, we tackle the problem of multi-cell resource scheduling, where the objective is to maximize the weighted sum-rate through inter-cell interference coordination (ICIC). The blanking method is used to mitigate the inter-cell interference, where a resource is either used with a predetermined transmit power or not used at all, i.e., blanked. This problem is known to be strongly NP-hard, which means that it is not only hard to solve in polynomial time, but it is also hard to find an approximation algorithm with guaranteed optimality gap. In this work, we identify special scenarios where a polynomial-time algorithm can be constructed to solve this problem with theoretical guarantees. In particular, we define a dominant interference environment, in which for each user the received power from each interferer is significantly greater than the aggregate received power from all other weaker interferers. We show that the originally strongly NP-hard problem can be tightly relaxed to a linear programming problem in a dominant interference environment. Consequently, we propose a polynomial time distributed algorithm that is not only guaranteed to be tight in a dominant interference environment, but which also computes an upper bound on the optimality gap without additional computational complexity. The proposed scheme is based on the primal-decomposition method, where the problem is divided into a master-problem and multiple subproblems. We solve the master-problem iteratively using the projected-subgradient method. We also show that each subproblem has a special network flow structure. By exploiting this network structure, each subproblem is solved using the network-based optimization methods, which significantly reduces the complexity in comparison to the general-purpose convex or linear optimization methods. In comparison with baseline schemes, simulation results of the International Mobile Telecommunications-Advanced (IMT-Advanced) scenarios show that the proposed scheme achieves higher gains in aggregate throughput, cell-edge throughput, and outage probability. We propose a power-efficient Tomlinson-Harashima precoder (THP) in the downlink of multi-user multiple-input single-output (MU-MISO) systems, where a transmit power reduction is achieved by means of interference optimization. The adopted approach is based on adaptively scaling the symbols of a number of users whose received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) thresholds are known to the transmitter. By doing this, the interference can be better aligned to the symbols of interest, thus reducing the power required to cancel it. The scaling is performed by forming a constrained optimization problem, solved with existing well-known techniques, which entails an increase in the computational complexity at the base station. To quantify this trade-off in performance and complexity, a study of the impact in the signal processing load is carried out by means of a power efficiency analysis. The presented analytical and simulation results in this paper confirm that the proposed technique increases the power efficiency up to 100% with respect to previous THP-based approaches while, at the same time, maintaining the same average performance. This paper studies downlink coverage maximization for cellular networks in which base station (BS) locations are modeled using a spatial Poisson point process, considering three different coverage models, and under constraints on transmit power, BS density and transmit power density. Firstly, the coverage optimization problem is solved analytically for the first coverage model that focuses on noise-limited communication by ignoring interference and random fading effects. This model provides useful insights into the significance of bounded path loss models to obtain meaningful solutions for this problem. The other two coverage models are based on the users' received signal-to-interference-plus-noise-ratio (\sinr) from their associated BSs. For these models, it is shown that the coverage optimization problem can be reduced to a constrained single dimensional optimization problem without any loss of optimality. The related solutions can be obtained with limited computational complexity by resorting to a numerical search over a compact subset of candidate values. Bounds on the optimum BS density are also provided to further truncate the search space. All results are derived for general bounded path loss models. In this paper, we address the problem of optimizing signal constellations for strong phase noise. The problem is investigated by considering three optimization formulations, which provide an analytical framework for constellation design. In the first formulation, we seek to design constellations that minimize the symbol error probability (SEP) for an approximate ML detector in the presence of phase noise. In the second formulation, we optimize constellations in terms of mutual information (MI) for the effective discrete channel consisting of phase noise, additive white Gaussian noise, and the approximate ML detector. To this end, we derive the MI of this discrete channel. Finally, we optimize constellations in terms of the MI for the phase noise channel. We give two analytical characterizations of the MI of this channel, which are shown to be accurate for a wide range of signal-to-noise ratios and phase noise variances. For each formulation, we present a detailed analysis of the optimal constellations and their performance in the presence of strong phase noise. This paper presents an optimization framework for a wireless sensor network whereby, in a given route, the optimal relay selection and power allocation are performed subject to signal-to-noise ratio constraints. The proposed approach determines whether a direct transmission is preferred for a given configuration of nodes, or a cooperative transmission. In the latter case, for each node, data transmission to the destination node is performed in two consecutive phases: broadcasting and relaying. The proposed strategy provides the best set of relays, the optimal broadcasting power and the optimal power values for the cooperative transmission phase. Once the minimum-energy transmission policy is obtained, the optimal routes from every node to a sink node are built-up using cooperative transmission blocks. We also present a low-complexity implementation approach of the proposed framework and provide an explicit solution to the optimization problem at hand by invoking the theory of multi-parametric programming. This technique provides the optimal solution as a function of measurable parameters in an off-line manner, and hence the on-line computational tasks are reduced to finding the parameters and evaluating simple functions. The proposed efficient approach has many potential applications in real-world problems and, to the best of the authors' knowledge, it has not been applied to communication problems before. Large-scale propagation effect plays an important role in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) relay systems. In particular, the position of the relay (between the source and destination) determines the path-loss effects of adjacent hops, which will further affect the performance of each hop and thus the relay system. In this paper, by minimizing the outage probability of a decode-and-forward (DF) MIMO relay system with orthogonal space-time block coding, we show that relay position optimization improves the finite-SNR (signal-to-noise ratio) diversity gain of a relay system whose adjacent hops have different diversity orders (unbalanced system). Specifically, with relay position optimization, the diversity gain is no longer bounded by that of the weaker hop, i.e., the hop with a lower diversity order, but approaches the diversity order of the stronger hop. This diversity improvement provides a dramatic improvement for the end-to-end outage probability. In this paper we consider orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) based cognitive radio systems that operate as secondary users (SUs) in a spectrum overlay approach and study joint spectral shaping and power control subject to specified target signal-to-interference+noise ratio (SINR) as a constrained optimization problem. We discuss necessary and sufficient conditions for the optimal solution of this problem where the spectrum overlay constraints are satisfied and the specified target SINR value is achieved with minimum transmit power. We also present an algorithm that incrementally adapts the OFDM transmitter to reach the optimal solution and study the convergence speed of the proposed algorithm through simulations. For a block-fading channel, this paper optimizes the allocation of redundancy between packet-level erasure coding (which provides additional packets to compensate for packet loss) and physical layer channel coding (which lowers the probability of packet loss). After some manipulation, standard optimization techniques determine the trade-off between the amount of packet-level erasure coding and physical-layer channel coding that minimizes the transmit power required to provide reliable communication. Our results indicate that the optimal combination of packet-level erasure coding and physical-layer coding provides a significant benefit over pure physical-layer coding when no form of channel diversity is present within a packet transmission. However, the benefit of including packet-level erasure coding diminishes as more diversity becomes available within a packet transmission. Even with no diversity within a packet transmission, this paper shows that as the total redundancy becomes large the optimal redundancy for packet-level erasure coding reaches a limit while the optimal redundancy for physical-layer coding continues to increase. Hence providing limitless redundancy at the packet-level with rateless codes such as fountain codes is not the best use of limitless redundancy for block-fading channels. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

In code-division multiplexing, the real/complex-valued sequence (signature) that maximizes the pre-detection signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) at the output of the maximum-SINR filter is simply the minimum-eigenvalue eigenvector of the disturbance autocorrelation matrix. SINR sequence optimization over a finite alphabet, however, is NP-hard in the sequence length. This paper studies the tradeoff between channel coding and ARQ (automatic repeat request) in Rayleigh block-fading channels. A heavily coded system corresponds to a low transmission rate with few ARQ re-transmissions, whereas lighter coding corresponds to a higher transmitted rate but more retransmissions. The optimum packet error probability, where optimum refers to the maximization of the average successful throughput, is derived and is shown to be a decreasing function of the average signal-to-noise ratio and of the channel diversity order. A general conclusion of the work is that the optimum error probability is quite large (e.g., 10% or larger) for reasonable channel parameters, and that operating at a very small error probability can lead to a significantly reduced throughput. This conclusion holds even when a number of practical ARQ considerations, such as delay constraints and acknowledgement feedback errors, are taken into account. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

This paper presents a joint subcarrier and power allocation algorithm for cooperative multiuser orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MU-OFDM) cognitive radio (CR) systems. By simplifying a three-node relay network to a two-node network with the equivalent channel gain, we formulate the resource allocation problem for a cooperative MU-OFDM CR system in a similar form to that for a non-cooperative MU-OFDM CR system. With this problem formulation, a rule is derived for performing subcarrier assignment operations under a given power distribution, where the sum capacity optimization is alternated between the subcarrier and power to form a joint subcarrier and power allocation algorithm. To simplify the high-complexity optimal power allocation algorithm (i.e., the iterative partitioned water-filling algorithm) for the joint scheme, we further develop a simple method for updating the water level when each subcarrier is assigned. Simulation results show that, with or without cooperative transmission, using the proposed method to update the water level achieves a system capacity close to that of the joint subcarrier and power allocation algorithm with the optimal power distribution. In this paper, we consider beamforming (BF) for cooperative networks with one multi—antenna source, multiple multi—antenna amplify—and—forward (AF) relays, and one single—antenna destination. The source BF vector and the AF—BF matrices at the relays are optimized for maximization of the signal—to—noise ratio (SNR) at the destination under three different power constraints. In particular, we consider individual relay power constraints, a joint relay power constraint, and a joint power constraint for the source and the relays. We solve the associated optimization problems in two stages. In the first stage, we find the optimal AF—BF matrices for a given BF vector at the source. For the cases of individual and joint relay power constraints, closed—form solutions for the AF—BF matrices are provided, respectively. Furthermore, for the case of a joint source—relay power constraint, the AF—BF matrices are obtained in closed form up to a scalar power allocation factor and an efficient numerical algorithm for the power allocation between the source and the relays is given. In the second stage, the optimal source BF vectors are computed. Thereby, we show that for the joint relay and the joint source—relay power constraints, the resulting problem can be transformed into a non—convex polynomial programming problem which allows for an exact solution for small—scale networks. For large—scale networks and networks with individual relay power constraints, we propose efficient suboptimal optimization methods for the source BF vector. Simulation results show the benefits of having multiple antennas at the source and/or multiple multi—antenna relays and illustrate the performance differences introduced by the three different power constraints. In cognitive radio (CR) systems, reliable spectrum sensing techniques are required in order to avoid interference to the primary users of the spectrum. Whereas most of the existing literature on spectrum sensing considers impairment by additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) only, in practice, CRs also have to cope with various types of non—Gaussian noise such as man—made impulsive noise, co—channel interference, and ultra—wideband interference. In this paper, we propose an adaptive L_p—norm detector which does not require any a priori knowledge about the primary user signal and performs well for a wide range of circularly symmetric non—Gaussian noises with finite moments. We analyze the probabilities of false alarm and missed detection of the proposed detector in Rayleigh fading in the low signal—to—noise ratio regime and investigate its asymptotic performance if the number of samples available for spectrum sensing is large. Furthermore, we consider the deflection coefficient for optimization of the L_p—norm parameters and discuss its connection to the probabilities of false alarm and missed detection. Based on the deflection coefficient an adaptive algorithm for online optimization of the L_p—norm parameters is developed. Analytical and simulation results show that the proposed L_p—norm detector yields significant performance gains compared to conventional energy detection in non—Gaussian noise and approaches the performance of the locally optimal detector which requires knowledge of the noise distribution.
