The reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), which consists of many low-cost reflecting elements, can enhance the reception of the desired signal and suppress the interference. Considering the above advantages, this paper investigates the RIS-assisted wireless communication in the presence of an interferer, where a receiver receives the desired signal and interference from a transmitter and an interferer, respectively, and the RIS is deployed to assist this system. First, an interference-limited channel capacity maximization problem is formulated, and a numerical algorithm based on the fraction programming and optimality conditions is proposed to obtain the optimal solution. Then, this paper shows the upper boundary of the maximal capacity with interference and discusses what kind of channel conditions can achieve the upper boundary and the corresponding optimal phase shifts. Next, this paper analyzes the asymptotic behaviors of the maximal capacity in the scenarios that some or all of the number of reflecting elements, antennas at the transmitter, and interferer go to infinity. Indoor optical wireless communication (IOWC) is a key technology complementing radio communication in 6G. Typically, the downlink of IOWC is implemented using visible light and uplink is implemented using infrared. Though the downlink of IOWC has been studied well, the uplink of multiple-access IOWC requires further research. In this paper, power allocation strategies in the uplink of IOWC with multiple non-cooperative users is studied. Optimizing power allocation in IOWC that maximize sum-rate with power constraints becomes a non-convex problem. First, this paper proposes an alternating maximization algorithm to compute near optimal power allocation policies for small number of users. Next, a phenomenon of invariance is observed when the number of users in the system is large. Under invariance, the optimal power allocation policy of a user becomes independent of other users, thereby facilitating fast and decentralized computation of power allocation strategies. From simulations, it was observed that the invariance can occur even with five to ten users. For the first time, a rigorous analysis of the invariance phenomenon is provided. An algorithm to compute the optimal power allocation at invariance is proposed; this algorithm is proven to achieve the global maxima in sum-rate without the channel knowledge of other users. This paper presents a part of our ground-breaking work on evaluation of buildings in terms of wireless friendliness at the building-design stage. The main goal is to devise building design practices that provide for a good performance of wireless networks deployed in buildings. In this paper, the interference gain (IG) and power gain (PG) are defined as two figures of merit (FoM) of the wireless performance of buildings. The FoMs bridge the gap between building design and wireless communications industries. An approach to derive exact closed-form equations for these FoMs is proposed for the first time. The derived analytic expressions facilitate straightforward and more computationally efficient numerical evaluation of the proposed FoMs as compared to Monte Carlo simulations for well-known indoor propagation models. It is shown that the derived closed-form expression can be readily employed to evaluate the impact of building properties, such as the sizes and the aspect ratios (ARs) of rooms, on the wireless performance. Computation over multiple access channels (CoMAC) has been proposed to solve the problem of spectrum scarcity in wireless networks, which combines communication and computation efficiently using the superposition property of wireless channels. In this paper, we consider a multi-cluster CoMAC network, whose performance is affected by the inter-cluster interference and the non-uniform fading. To minimize the sum mean squared error of signals aggregated at different fusion centers (FCs), we propose a transceiver design for multi-cluster CoMAC. Specifically, we adopt a uniform-forcing transmitter design to formulate the receiver design as a quadratic sum-of-ratios problem with nonconvex quadratic constraints. Then, we propose a branch-and-bound algorithm to find its optimal solution with a given error tolerance. To solve the problem in a decentralized way, we develop a distributed algorithm based on the primal decomposition theory. Each subproblem is solved by using the successive convex approximation method. Further combining Lagrange duality, we derive the optimal solution structure of each subproblem, based on which we can find the solution with lower complexity. Caching at the wireless edge nodes is a promising way to boost the spatial and spectral efficiency, for the sake of alleviating networks from content-related traffic. Coded caching originally introduced by Maddah-Ali and Niesen significantly speeds up communication efficiency by transmitting multicast messages simultaneously useful to multiple users. Most prior works on coded caching are based on the assumption that each user may request all content in the library. However, in many applications the users are interested only in a limited set of content that depends on their location. For example, assisted self-driving vehicles may access super High-Definition maps of the area through which they are travelling. Motivated by these considerations, this paper formulates the coded caching problem for location-based content with edge cache nodes. The considered problem includes a content server with access to ${\mathsf N}$ location-based files (e.g., High-Definition maps), ${\mathsf K}$ edge cache nodes located at different regions, and ${\mathsf K}$ users (i.e., vehicles) each of which is in the serving region of one cache node and can retrieve the cached content of this cache node with negligible cost. Depending on the location, each user only requests a file from a location-dependent subset of the library. The objective is to minimize the worst-case load (i.e., the worst-case number of broadcasted bits from the content server among all possible demands). For this novel coded caching problem, we propose a highly non-trivial converse bound under uncoded cache placement (i.e., each cache node directly copies some library bits in its cache), which shows that a simple achievable scheme is optimal under uncoded cache placement. In addition, this achievable scheme is also proved to be generally order optimal within a factor of 3. Finally, we extend the coded caching problem for location-based content to the multiaccess coded caching topology originally proposed by Hachem et al., where each user is connected to ${\mathsf L}$ nearest cache nodes. The future connectivity landscape, and notably, the 5G wireless systems will feature Ultra-Reliable Low Latency Communication (URLLC). The coupling of high reliability and low latency requirements in URLLC use cases makes the wireless access design very challenging, in terms of both the protocol design and of the associated transmission techniques. This paper aims to provide a broad perspective on the fundamental tradeoffs in URLLC, as well as the principles used in building access protocols. Two specific technologies are considered in the context of URLLC: massive MIMO and multi-connectivity, also termed interface diversity. In this paper, we investigate a secure mobile edge computing (MEC) network in the presence of multiple eavesdroppers, where multiple users can offload parts of their tasks to the computational access point (CAP). The multiple eavesdroppers may overhear the confidential task offloading, which leads to information leakage. In order to address this issue, we present the minimization problem of the secrecy outage probability (SOP), by jointly taking into account the constraints from the latency and energy consumption. With the aim to improve the system secrecy performance, we then introduce three user selection criteria to choose the best user among multiple ones. Specifically, criterion I maximizes the locally computational capacity, while criterion II and III maximize the secrecy capacity and data rate of main links, respectively. For these criteria, we further analyze the system secrecy performance by deriving analytical and asymptotic expressions for the SOP, from which we can conclude important insights for the system design. Finally, simulation and analytical results are provided to verify the proposed analysis. The results show that the three criteria can efficiently safeguard the MEC networks, compared to the traditional local computing and fully offloading, especially with a large value of user number. Covert wireless communications aim to hide the existence of transmission behavior from watchful adversaries to enhance security. In this paper, we propose a spectrum mask based covert communication strategy in Internet of Things (IoT) networks, where the overt channels are leveraged to enhance the covertness. Specifically, the legitimate IoT transmitter superimposes its own message on the overt channel to avoid being detected by the warden. We assume that proper Gaussian signaling (PGS) is adopted at the overt channel, and improper Gaussian signaling (IGS) is adopted at the legitimate transmitter to improve the covert transmission performance. To maximize the covert rate of the legitimate IoT system, a joint transmit power and IGS factor optimization problem is formulated under the constraints of covertness requirement. The metric of minimum error detection probability, that represents the worst-case for the legitimate transmitter, is utilized to measure the covertness. By exploiting the piece-wise monotonic properties of the objective function and the constraints, we derive the optimal transmit power and IGS factor pairs in both the IGS and PGS schemes. Finally, extensive numerical results are presented to demonstrate that the IGS scheme can improve the covert rate compared to the PGS scheme under a given covertness constraint. In order to satisfy the requirement of extremely high data rate in traffic hotspot regions, millimeter wave (mmWave) has attracted significant attention in wireless communication networks. While the coverage performance of mmWave networks based on the distribution of signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) has been widely studied, it provides only very limited information on the link reliability. In this paper, we provide a fine-grained performance analysis of the mmWave networks with hotspots. Specifically, we first establish a general and tractable framework to investigate the performance of mmWave networks using the Poisson cluster process integrated with several features of the mmWave band. Both open and closed association strategies are considered. To show what fraction of users in the networks achieves target reliability when the SINR is given, we derive the tier association probability and the moments of the conditional SINR distribution, based on which the exact meta distributions of SINR are given. Interestingly, in clustered mmWave networks, the widely used standard and generalized beta approximations do not work well when the blockage effect is severe. To resolve this issue, we provide a modified approximation by scaling the standard beta distribution, which is shown to be closer to the exact results. We conduct extensive simulations to study the impact of mmWave and deployment features on the performance of clustered mmWave networks. Numerical results reveal that the optimal scattering variance of mmWave base stations scales with the cluster size to maximize the number of concurrent reliable links, and increasing the antenna directivity results in more reliable communications than elevating the transmit power of mmWave base stations. Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is deemed as a promising solution to improve the spectral and energy efficiency of wireless communications cost-effectively. In this paper, we consider a wireless network where multiple base stations (BSs) serve their respective users with the aid of distributed IRSs in the downlink communication. Specifically, each IRS assists in the transmission from its associated BS to user via passive beamforming, while in the meantime, it also randomly scatters the signals from other co-channel BSs, thus resulting in additional signal as well as interference paths in the network. As such, a new IRS-user/BS association problem arises pertaining to optimally balance the passive beamforming gains from all IRSs among different BS-user communication links. To address this new problem, we first derive a tractable lower bound of the average signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) at the receiver of each user, termed average-signal-to-average-interference-plus-noise ratio (ASAINR), based on which two ASAINR balancing problems are formulated to maximize the minimum ASAINR among all users by optimizing the IRS-user associations without and with BS transmit power control, respectively. We also characterize the scaling behavior of user ASAINRs with the increasing number of IRS reflecting elements to investigate the different effects of IRS-reflected signal versus interference power. Moreover, to solve the two ASAINR balancing problems that are both non-convex optimization problems, we propose an optimal solution to the problem without BS power control and low-complexity suboptimal solutions to both problems by applying the branch-and-bound method and exploiting new properties of the IRS-user associations, respectively. It has been a challenging task to derive the complementary cumulative distribution function (CCDF) of aggregate interference as closed-form in Poisson point process (PPP). In this paper, we consider wireless communication networks where transmitters are all distributed according to homogeneous PPP and study the CCDF of the interference. Mainly, we derive generalized bounds on the CCDF of aggregate interference from whole homogeneous PPP based on discretization of interference, which considerably enhance tightness compared to the previous bounds. These bounds can be used to the analysis requiring the distribution for aggregate interference, such as deployment and activation of BSs, massive MIMO, and millimeter wave communication networks. As examples of utilizing the derived bounds, we derive tractable coverage probabilities of uplink non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) users and downlink users in cellular networks under line-of-sight(LoS)/non-line-of-signt (NLOS) channels, respectively. In NOMA, we derive the closed-form bounds on coverage probability when successive interference cancellation is adopted for NOMA signal demodulation. Using the proposed bounds, we also obtain the bounds on coverage probability of a cellular system with LoS/NLOS channels. The tightness of bounds in this work is shown via numerical comparison. Doppler effect is a fundamental phenomenon that appears in wave propagation, where a moving observer experiences dilation or contraction of the wavelength of a wave. It also appears in radio frequency (RF) wireless communication when there exists a relative movement between the transmitter and the receiver, and is widely considered as a major impairment for reliable wireless communication. The current paper proposes Doppler assisted wireless communication (DAWC) that exploits Doppler effect and uses kinetic energy for co-channel interference (CCI) mitigation. The proposed system also exploits the propagation environment and the network topology and consists of an access point (AP) with a rotating drum antenna. The rotating drum receive antenna is designed in such a way that it shifts the interfering signals away from the desired signal band. This paper includes a detailed system model, and the results show that under favorable fading conditions, CCI can be significantly reduced. The universal filtered multicarrier (UFMC) modulation is among the most considered solutions for the realization of beyond orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) air interfaces for future wireless networks. This paper focuses on the design and analysis of a UFMC transceiver equipped with multiple antennas and operating at millimeter-wave carrier frequencies. This paper provides the full mathematical model of an MIMO-UFMC transceiver, taking into account the presence of hybrid analog/digital beamformers at both ends of the communication links. Then, several detection structures are proposed, both for the case of single-packet isolated transmission and for the case of multiple-packet continuous transmission. In the latter situation, this paper also considers the case in which no guard time among adjacent packets is inserted, trading off an increased level of interference with higher values of spectral efficiency. At the analysis stage, several considered detection structures and transmission schemes are compared in terms of bit-error rate, root-mean-square error, and system throughput. The numerical results show that the proposed transceiver algorithms are effective and that the linear minimum mean-square error (MMSE) data detector is capable of well managing the increased interference brought by the removal of guard times among consecutive packets, thus yielding throughput gains of about 10%–13%. The effect of phase noise at the receiver is also numerically assessed, and it is shown that the recursive implementation of the linear MMSE exhibits some degree of robustness against this disturbance. This paper provides an analytical performance characterization of both the uplink (UL) and downlink (DL) user-centric network multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, where a cooperating base station (BS) cluster is formed for each user individually and the clusters for different users may overlap. In this model, cooperating BSs (each equipped with multiple antennas) jointly perform zero-forcing beamforming to the set of single-antenna users associated with them. As compared with a baseline network MIMO system with disjoint BS clusters, the effect of user-centric clustering is that it improves signal strength in both the UL and DL, while reducing cluster-edge interference in the DL. This paper quantifies these effects by assuming that BSs and users form Poisson point processes and by further approximating both the signal and interference powers using Gamma distributions of appropriate parameters. We show that BS cooperation provides significant gain as compared to single-cell processing for both the UL and DL, but the advantage of user-centric clustering over the baseline disjoint clustering system is significant for the DL cluster-edge users only. Although the analytic results are derived with the assumption of perfect channel state information and infinite backhaul between the cooperating BSs, they nevertheless provide architectural insight into the design of the future cooperative cellular networks. In this paper, a comprehensive design and analysis of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) full-duplex (FD) relaying systems in a multi-cell environment is investigated, where a multi-antenna amplify-and-forward FD relay station serves multiple half-duplex (HD) multi-antenna users. The pivotal obstacles of loopback self-interference (LI) and multiple co-channel interferers (CCI) at the relay and destination when employing FD relaying in cellular networks are addressed. In contrast to the HD relaying mode, the CCI in the FD relaying mode is predicted to double since the uplink and downlink communications are simultaneously scheduled via the same channel. In this paper, the optimal layout of transmit (receive) precoding (decoding) weight vectors which maximizes the overall signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio is constructed by a suitable optimization problem, and then a closed-form sub-optimal formula based on null space projection is presented. The proposed hop-by-hop rank-1 zero-forcing (ZF) beamforming vectors are based on added ZF constraints used to suppress the LI and CCI channels at the relay and destination, i.e., the source and relay perform transmit ZF beamforming, while the relay and destination employ receive ZF combining. To this end, unified accurate expressions for the outage probability and ergodic capacity are derived in closed form. In addition, simpler tight lower bound formulas for the outage probability and ergodic capacity are presented. Moreover, the asymptotic approximations for outage probability are considered to gain insights into system behavior in terms of the diversity order and array gain. Numerical and simulation results show the accuracy of the presented exact analytical expressions and the tightness of the lower bound expressions. The case of hop-by-hop maximum-ratio transmission/maximal-ratio combining beamforming is included for comparison purposes. Furthermore, our results show that while multi-antenna terminals improve the system performance, the detrimental effect of CCI on FD relaying is clearly seen. The integration of local device-to-device (D2D) communications and cellular connections has been intensively studied to satisfy co-existing D2D and cellular communication demand. In future cellular networks, there will be numerous standby users possessing D2D communication capabilities in close proximity to each other. Considering that these standby users do not necessarily request D2D communications all the time, in this paper we propose a hybrid D2D-cellular scheme to make use of these standby users and to improve the rate performance for cellular users. More specifically, through D2D links, a virtual antenna array can be formed by sharing antennas across different terminals to realize the diversity gain of MIMO channels. This paper considers the use of millimeter wave links to enable high data rate D2D communications. We then design an orthogonal D2D multiple access protocol and formulate the optimization problem of joint cellular and D2D resource allocation for downlink transmissions using the proposed scheme. We obtain a closed-form solution for D2D resource allocation, which reveals useful insights for practical system design. Hardware calibration is essential to restore the uplink/downlink channel reciprocity for multi-user massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems operating in a time division duplexing mode. Unfortunately, due to the associated overhead, calibration cannot be performed frequently; furthermore, any calibration procedure leaves behind a residual mismatch between the uplink and downlink channels. In this paper, we study the effects of these calibration errors on the achievable rates in the downlink of a multi-cell, multi-user, and distributed massive MIMO system. Specifically, we develop accurate, yet simple, lower-bounds on the per-user achievable rate, assuming either zero-forcing (ZF) or matched filtering (MF) are used. We also introduce a performance loss coefficient as a measure of sensitivity of the performance to the calibration errors. Using this measure, we identify the conditions under which ZF precoding is more sensitive to calibration errors than MF. Finally, we consider the robust weighted sum-rate maximization problem to mitigate the degrading effects of non-ideal calibration. Our numerical experiments show that the rate lower-bounds developed in this paper accurately quantify the impacts of non-ideal calibration on performance. This paper analyzes an emerging architecture of cellular network utilizing both planar base stations uniformly distributed in the Euclidean plane and base stations located on roads. An example of this architecture is that where, in addition to conventional planar cellular base stations and users, vehicles also play the role of both base stations and users. A Poisson line process is used to model the road network and, conditionally on the lines, linear Poisson point processes are used to model the vehicles on the roads. The conventional planar base stations and users are modeled by the independent planar Poisson point processes. We use Palm calculus to investigate the statistical properties of a typical user in such a network. Specifically, this paper discusses two different Palm distributions, with respect to the user point processes depending on its type: planar or vehicular. We derive the distance to the nearest base station, the association of the typical users, and the coverage probability of the typical user. Furthermore, we provide a comprehensive characterization of coverage of all possible cellular transmissions in this setting, namely, vehicle-to-vehicle, vehicle-to-infrastructure, infrastructure-to-vehicle, and infrastructure-to-infrastructure. Visible light communication (VLC) is an emerging short-range optical wireless communication technology that is driven by the widespread deployment of light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Indoor VLC users may experience noticeable interference when independent transmitters utilizing wide-beam luminaires are closely located. In this paper, a coordinated beamforming (CB) scheme is proposed for downlink interference mitigation among the coexisting VLC attocells utilizing multi-luminaire transmitters. Compared to joint transmission (JT) schemes, wherein the data and channel state information are shared among transmitters of different attocells, the proposed CB scheme places lower requirements on the network in terms of backbone traffic, and is easier to implement in a practical deployment, though at the cost of compromised performance. In this paper, we investigate the downlink transmission of coordinated VLC attocells and focus on its transmitter design. The weighted sum mean square error (WSMSE) is adopted as the performance metric to take into consideration interference, noise, and fairness among users in system optimization. The WSMSE minimization problem is considered with linear beamforming restricted by amplitude constraints. Such constraints arise from the dynamic range limitations in typical LEDs. Moreover, we extend our design method to take into account possible mismatches in channel information available to the transmitters. Numerical examples are provided to illustrate the performance of the proposed CB scheme in typical VLC scenarios. Cognitive radio (CR) is an effective solution to improve the spectral efficiency (SE) of wireless communications by allowing the secondary users (SUs) to share spectrum with primary users (PUs). Meanwhile, intelligent reflecting surface (IRS), also known as reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), has been recently proposed as a promising approach to enhance energy efficiency (EE) of wireless communication systems through intelligently reconfiguring the channel environment. To improve both SE and EE, in this paper, we introduce multiple IRSs to a downlink multiple-input single-output (MISO) CR system, in which a single SU coexists with a primary network with multiple PU receivers (PU-RXs). Our design objective is to maximize the achievable rate of SU subject to a total transmit power constraint on the SU transmitter (SU-TX) and interference temperature constraints on the PU-RXs, by jointly optimizing the beamforming at SU-TX and the reflecting coefficients at each IRS. Both perfect and imperfect channel state information (CSI) cases are considered in the optimization. This paper presents a computationally efficient technique for decomposing non-orthogonally superposed $k$ geometric sequences. The method, which is named as geometric sequence decomposition with $k$ -simplexes transform (GSD-ST), is based on the concept of transforming an observed sequence to multiple $k$ -simplexes in a virtual $k$ -dimensional space and correlating the volumes of the transformed simplexes. Hence, GSD-ST turns the problem of decomposing $k$ geometric sequences into one of solving a $k$ -th order polynomial equation. Our technique has significance for wireless communications because sampled points of a radio wave comprise a geometric sequence. This implies that GSD-ST is capable of demodulating randomly combined radio waves, thereby eliminating the effect of interference. To exemplify the potential of GSD-ST, we propose a new radio access scheme, namely non-orthogonal interference-free radio access (No-INFRA). Herein, GSD-ST enables the collision-free reception of uncoordinated access requests. It is known that superposition signaling in Gaussian interference networks is capable of improving the achievable rate region. However, the problem of maximizing the rate gain offered by superposition signaling is computationally prohibitive, even in the simplest case of two-user single-input single-output interference networks. This paper examines superposition signaling for the general multiple-input multiple-output broadcast Gaussian interference networks. The problem of maximizing either the sum rate or the minimal user’s rate under superposition signaling and dirty paper coding is solved by a computationally efficient path-following procedure, which requires only a convex quadratic program for each iteration but ensures convergence at least to a locally optimal solution. One of the major purposes for fifth generation (5G) communications waveform design is to relax the synchronization requirements for supporting efficient massive machine type communications (MTCs). Polynomial cancellation coded orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (PCC-OFDM) and universal filtered multi-carrier (UFMC) are designed to reduce the sidelobes of the OFDM waveform to protect against intercarrier interference (ICI) in the 5G uplink. To the best of our knowledge, there is no analysis of the effect of ICI for the UFMC system with time offset transmissions that many arise in MTC scenarios. Furthermore, there is no study on reducing the computational complexity of the UFMC system. This paper provides closed-form expressions for time offsets interference in such a case for OFDM, PCC-OFDM, and UFMC. This paper also presents theoretical analysis for the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio, achievable rate, and bit error ratio performance. The results show that PCC-OFDM significantly protects against ICI at the cost of halving the spectral efficiency. In this paper, a hybrid radio frequency (RF) and visible light communication (VLC) system is considered. A hybrid system with multiple VLC access points (APs) and RF APs is designed and analyzed. In indoor environments, VLC APs provide very high data rates whilst proving illumination, and RF APs offer ubiquitous coverage with moderate data rates. Since VLC networks piggyback on existing lighting infrastructures, they may not always be able to provide full coverage despite supporting very high data rates in some areas. Hence in practical deployments, the standalone VLC networks should be augmented in order to improve the per user data rate coverage. In this context, RF APs can be used to improve the per user rate coverage of VLC networks as well as to provide the ubiquitous control functionalities. In this paper, a simple RF deployment is proposed in order to improve the per user outage data rate performance of standalone VLC networks. It is assumed that the VLC system resources are fixed, and this paper quantifies the minimum spectrum and power requirements for a RF system, which after introduction to the VLC system, the hybrid RF/VLC system achieves certain per user rate coverage performances. This paper proposes a new paradigm for spectrum sharing between cellular wireless communications (CWC) and radio astronomy systems (RAS). In contrast to the existing paradigm of geographical and spectral isolation between CWC and RAS, this paper develops a three phase spectrum access, which enables geographical and spectral coexistence between CWC and RAS. Shared spectrum access zone (SSAZ) is created around the RAS site and CWC cells within the SSAZ follow the three phase spectrum access scheme while those outside the SSAZ have full spectrum access. In addition, system characteristics-based improved spectrum sharing is developed. Furthermore, a built-in fine tuning mechanism is presented for addressing mismatches between design and practical environments as well as for facilitating service evolutions. Performance evaluation results demonstrate that the proposed paradigm offers 1) certain guaranteed spectrum access to RAS, which is impossible in the existing paradigm, 2) capability to handle higher peak and mean traffics to CWC under spectrum restructuring of both CWC and RAS bands, and 3) overall improved spectrum utilization. A common model for transmission over wireless links is that of a multiantenna system affected by an additive interfering signal. In some scenarios of interest, such as when the interferer is located close to the transmitter and performs retransmission, interference may be learned by the transmitter, but remain unknown at the receiver. In this case, it is well known that, if transmitter and receiver have perfect channel state information (CSI), then a technique called Dirty Paper Coding (DPC) is able to fully mitigate the interference. This paper studies the impact of imperfect CSI on a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system with interference and compares the performance of DPC with that of a scheme where interference is decoded at the receiver, which we refer to as beamforming with joint decoding (BF-JD). Unlike DPC, which models the interference as an "unstructured" random process, BF-JD exploits the fact that the interfering signal is a codeword of the interferer's codebook. It is demonstrated by analysis and numerical results that BF-JD provides advantages over DPC when CSI is imperfect at the transmitter but perfect at the receiver, whereas this is not true for the case of imperfect CSI at both transmitter and receiver. The wireless communication field is approaching the realization of the integrated unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and cellular network for further improved communication performance. In this paper, we consider a cellular network with a UAV-mounted aerial base station (ABS) coexisting with multiple terrestrial base stations (TBSs), where each base station (BS) is serving multiple users. Under the probabilistic channel based environment, we design the three-dimensional (3D) positioning for the ABS and the transmit power allocation for all the nodes in the uplink (UL), downlink (DL), and combined UL and DL operations. Considering the ABS user (AU) and the TBS user (TU) as contending parties, our objective is to maximize the weighted sum of the minimum data rate of the AUs and the minimum data rate of the TUs. The whole optimization problem is non-convex and difficult to be directly solved, for which we employ the block coordinate descent (BCD), the successive convex approximation (SCA), the particle swarm optimization (PSO), and the discrete search algorithm (DSA) methods. In this paper, we investigate the multiple input multiple output (MIMO)-non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) transmission with the aid of location information. We first consider two users separated in both the distance and angle domains. With different access distances, NOMA could be used to serve the near-user and the far-user simultaneously, whereas spatial division multiple access (SDMA) would be applied if the two users have largely-separated angles of departure (AOD) that guarantees spatial orthogonality. Comparing the ergodic sum rates of these two multiple access (MA) schemes, we first characterize the preferable MA regions in the angle-distance plane. Analytical expression of the region boundary between NOMA and SDMA is derived. Moreover, NOMA-preferable regions are expressed in terms of the maximum distance difference and the minimum angle difference between the two users, respectively. On basis of these results, we further propose a location-based low-complexity user pairing algorithm for the general multiuser scenario. Numerical results confirm the accuracy of the derived region boundaries, and the simulations show that the proposed user pairing algorithm can effectively improve the resource utilization rate, compared to the conventional MA and user pairing schemes. Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) and spectrum sharing (SS) are two emerging multiple access technologies for efficient spectrum utilization in future wireless communications standards. In this paper, we present the performance analysis of a NOMA-based cooperative relaying system (CRS) in an underlay spectrum sharing scenario, considering a peak interference constraint (PIC), where the peak interference inflicted by the secondary (unlicensed) network on the primary-user (licensed) receiver (PU-Rx) should be less than a predetermined threshold. In the proposed system the relay and the secondary-user receiver (SU-Rx) are equipped with multiple receive antennas and apply selection combining (SC), where the antenna with highest instantaneous signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is selected, and maximal-ratio combining (MRC), for signal reception. Closed-form expressions are derived for the average achievable rate and outage probabilities for SS-based CRS-NOMA. These results show that for large values of peak interference power, the SS-based CRS-NOMA outperforms the CRS with conventional orthogonal multiple access (OMA) in terms of spectral efficiency. The effect of the interference channel on the system performance is also discussed, and in particular, it is shown that the interference channel between the secondary-user transmitter (SU-Tx) and the PU-Rx has a more severe effect on the average achievable rate as compared to that between the relay and the PU-Rx. Hardware non-idealities are among the main performance restrictions for upcoming wireless communication systems. Asymmetric hardware distortions (HWD) happen when the impairments of the I/Q branches are correlated or imbalanced, which in turn generate improper additive interference at the receiver side. When the interference is improper, as well as in other interference-limited scenarios, improper Gaussian signaling (IGS) has been shown to provide rate and/or power efficiency benefits. In this paper, we investigate the rate benefits of IGS in a two-user interference channel (IC) with additive asymmetric HWD when interference is treated as noise. We propose two iterative algorithms to optimize the parameters of the improper transmit signals. We first rewrite the rate region as an pseudo-signal-to-interference-plus-noise-ratio (PSINR) region and employ majorization minimization and fractional programming to find a suboptimal solution for the achievable user rates. Then, we propose a simplified algorithm based on a separate optimization of the powers and complementary variances of the users, which exhibits lower computational complexity. We show that IGS can improve the performance of the two-user IC with additive HWD. Mutually orthogonal complementary codes have found many practical applications in wireless communications owing to their perfect correlation properties. However, the set size of a mutually orthogonal complementary code set (MOCCS) is upper bounded by the number of constituent sequences in each complementary code. As a result, the number of users in the communication system is limited. To overcome this limitation, quasi-complementary sequence sets (QCSSs) were proposed, which include low correlation zone complementary sequence sets (LCZ-CSSs) and low correlation complementary sequence sets (LC-CSSs). In this paper, aperiodic quasi-complementary sequences are our main interest. Constructions of aperiodic LC-CSSs and aperiodic LCZ-CSSs over the complex roots of unity are proposed. This paper investigates a new scenario of spectrum sharing between unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and terrestrial wireless communication, in which a cognitive/secondary UAV transmitter communicates with a ground secondary receiver (SR), in the presence of a number of primary terrestrial communication links that operate over the same frequency band. We exploit the UAV’s mobility in three-dimensional (3D) space to improve its cognitive communication performance while controlling the co-channel interference at the primary receivers (PRs), such that the received interference power at each PR is below a prescribed threshold termed as interference temperature (IT). First, we consider the quasi-stationary UAV scenario, where the UAV is placed at a static location during each communication period of interest. In this case, we jointly optimize the UAV’s 3D placement and power control to maximize the SR’s achievable rate, subject to the UAV’s altitude and transmit power constraints, as well as a set of IT constraints at the PRs to protect their communications. Second, we consider the mobile UAV scenario, in which the UAV is dispatched to fly from an initial location to a final location within a given task period. We propose an efficient algorithm to maximize the SR’s average achievable rate over this period by jointly optimizing the UAV’s 3D trajectory and power control, subject to the additional constraints on UAV’s maximum flying speed and initial/final locations. Finally, numerical results are provided to evaluate the performance of the proposed designs for different scenarios, as compared to various benchmark schemes. It is shown that in the quasi-stationary scenario the UAV should be placed at its minimum altitude while in the mobile scenario the UAV should adjust its altitude along with horizontal trajectory, so as to maximize the SR’s achievable rate in both scenarios. In this paper, we optimize the energy efficiency (bits/s/Hz/J) of device-to-multi-device (D2MD) wireless communications. While the device-to-device scenario has been extensively studied to improve the spectral efficiency in cellular networks, the use of multicast communications opens the possibility of reusing the spectrum resources also inside the groups. The optimization problem is formulated as a mixed integer non-linear joint optimization for the power control and allocation of resource blocks (RBs) to each group. Our model explicitly considers resource sharing by letting co-channel transmission over a RB (up to a maximum of $r$ transmitters) and/or transmission through $s$ different channels in each group. We use an iterative decomposition approach, using first matching theory to find a stable even if sub-optimal channel allocation, to then optimize the transmission power vectors in each group via fractional programming. In addition, within this framework, both the network energy efficiency and the max-min individual energy efficiency are investigated. We characterize numerically the energy-efficient capacity region, and our results show that the normalized energy efficiency is nearly optimal (above 90% of the network capacity) for a wide range of minimum-rate constraints. The emergence of interference alignment (IA) as a degrees-of-freedom optimal strategy motivates the need to investigate whether IA can be leveraged to aid conventional network utility maximization algorithms, which are typically only capable of finding locally optimal solutions. To test the usefulness of IA in this context, this paper proposes a two-stage optimization framework for the downlink of a $G$ -cell multi-antenna network with $K$ users/cell. The first stage of the proposed framework focuses on nulling interference from a set of dominant interferers using IA, while the second stage optimizes transmit and receive beamformers to maximize a network-wide utility using the IA solution as the initial condition. Further, this paper establishes a set of new feasibility results for partial IA that can be used to guide the number of dominant interferers to be nulled in the first stage. Through simulations on specific topologies of a cluster of base stations, it is observed that the impact of IA depends on the choice of the utility function and the presence of out-of-cluster interference. In the absence of out-of-cluster interference, the proposed framework outperforms straightforward optimization when maximizing the minimum rate, while providing marginal gains when maximizing sum rate. Joint optimal resource allocation and probabilistic caching design is conceived for device-to-device (D2D) communications in a heterogeneous wireless network (HetNet) relying on full-duplex (FD) relays. In particular, popular contents can be cached at user devices and at relays that are located close to users. A user may request the contents of interest from another user via D2D communications and also from a nearby relay equipped with FD radios. If the requested contents are not found in the buffers of other users/relays within the coverage range, users may opt for connecting to the macro base station (MBS) via a relay by using an FD communication. Furthermore, we propose a beneficial mobility-aware coded caching philosophy for D2D communications in the HetNet considered. Especially, we model the mobility pattern of users as discrete random jumps and exploit coded caching for improving the throughput attained. Subsequently, we develop mathematical models for analyzing the throughput in the presence of edge caching, where both the system-level co-channel interference and the FD self-interference are considered. We circumvent the high complexity of stochastic optimization by developing low-complexity optimization. By supporting asynchronous transmission and flexible subband (SB) setting, filtered orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (f-OFDM) has been identified as one of the most promising waveforms for future wireless communications, which makes the deep investigation on the f-OFDM an urgent mission. Therefore, this paper investigates the downlink interference of asynchronous f-OFDM systems under different SB configurations. We initially classify the overall interference into two categories, termed as the inner-SB and inter-SB interferences. Subsequently, the closed-form expressions for interference and its variances are derived on the basis of interference structures and are then verified via simulations. Some important influencing factors, such as the timing offset between the user of interest and the interfering user, the width of guard band, as well as the choice of SB filter, are simulated and analyzed. By blending the concepts of non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing, in this paper, a novel hybrid scheme is conceived for supporting diverse services in future wireless systems. Motivating to maximize energy efficiency (EE), the joint resource management of user clustering (UC) and power allocation is investigated for the downlink hybrid NOMA systems. Under two different power consumption cases, the optimal resource allocation (Opt-RA) algorithm is developed with the help of converting the original mixed integer non-linear programming (MINLP) problem to the tractable decoupled problems. For practical implementation, the heuristic resource allocation (Heur-RA) algorithm is also proposed, and it includes a low-complexity UC algorithm based on the candidate search-and-allocation approach. Our simulation results show that, both the Opt-RA and Heur-RA algorithms achieve significantly higher EE performance than other existing algorithms. Further, the results also prove that, the hybrid NOMA conceived is able to exploit the advantages of NOMA scheme, and is superior to conventional orthogonal multiple access (OMA) in terms of EE, as well as achieving higher flexibility for system configuration than NOMA. In this paper, we analyze a carrier-sense multiple access system with all-to-all broadcast data traffic to assess the performance gain obtained by using multiple sector antennas and a receiver setup that can decode multiple packets simultaneously when packets arrive in narrow angle of arrivals. In the broadcast mode of IEEE 802.11p-based vehicle-to-vehicle communications, acknowledgment messages are absent and a fixed contention window is used in medium access. As a result, the probability of multiple vehicles simultaneously transmitting a packet increases with the number of vehicles. In the case of a simultaneous transmission, a receiver with omnidirectional antennas receives power from all the transmitting vehicles and the probability of successfully decoding a packet decreases. This problem can be alleviated by using sector antennas when the simultaneously transmitted packets arrive at a receiver in the narrow angle of arrivals. We show through analysis and simulations that the packet success rate (PSR) can be improved significantly by using the sector antennas’ setup instead of an omnidirectional antenna. Numerical results show that a several-fold increase in the PSR can be achieved in a setup with four sector antennas compared with an omnidirectional antenna when the density of vehicles is large. Unmanned aerial vehicle-based aerial base stations (BSs) can provide rapid communication services to ground users and are thus promising for future communication systems. In this paper, we consider a scenario where no functional terrestrial BSs are available and the aim is deploying multiple aerial BSs to cover a maximum number of users within a certain target area. To this end, we first propose a naive successive deployment method, which converts the non-convex constraints in the involved optimization into a combination of linear constraints through geometrical relaxation. Then, we investigate a deployment method based on $K$ -means clustering. The method divides the target area into $K$ convex subareas, where within each subarea, a mixed integer non-linear problem is solved. An iterative power efficient technique is further proposed to improve coverage probability with reduced power. Finally, we propose a robust technique for compensating the loss of coverage probability in the existence of inaccurate user location information. Our simulation results show that the proposed techniques achieve an up to 30% higher coverage probability when users are not distributed uniformly. In addition, the proposed simultaneous deployment techniques, especially the one using iterative algorithm, improve power-efficiency by up to 15% compared with the benchmark circle packing theory. Massive multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) systems can suffer from coherent intercell interference due to the phenomenon of pilot contamination. This paper investigates a two-layer decoding method that mitigates both coherent and non-coherent interference in multi-cell Massive MIMO. To this end, each base station (BS) first estimates the channels to intra-cell users using either minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) or element-wise MMSE estimation based on uplink pilots. The estimates are used for local decoding on each BS followed by a second decoding layer where the BSs cooperate to mitigate inter-cell interference. An uplink achievable spectral efficiency (SE) expression is computed for arbitrary two-layer decoding schemes. A closed form expression is then obtained for correlated Rayleigh fading, maximum-ratio combining, and the proposed large-scale fading decoding (LSFD) in the second layer. We also formulate a sum SE maximization problem with both the data power and LSFD vectors as optimization variables. Since this is an NP-hard problem, we develop a low-complexity algorithm based on the weighted MMSE approach to obtain a local optimum. Simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) is characterized by the ambiguous role of multi-user interference. In short, the beneficial effect of multi-user interference on RF energy harvesting is obtained at the price of a reduced link capacity, thus originating nontrivial tradeoffs between the achievable information rate and the harvestable energy. Arguably, in indoor environments, this tradeoff might be affected by the propagation loss due to blockage objects like walls. Hence, a couple of fundamental questions arise. How much must the network elements be densified to counteract the blockage attenuation? Is blockage always detrimental on the achievable rate-energy tradeoff? In this paper, we analyze the performance of an indoor multiple-input multiple-output SWIPT-enabled network in the attempt to shed a light of those questions. The effects of the obstacles are examined with the help of a stochastic geometry approach in which the locations of energy sources (also referred to as power heads) are distributed by using a Poisson point process and walls are generated through a Manhattan Poisson line process. The stochastic behavior of the signal attenuation and the multi-user interference is studied to obtain the joint complementary cumulative distribution function of information rate and harvested power. Theoretical results are validated through Monte Carlo simulations. Eventually, the rate-energy tradeoff is presented as a function of the density of walls to emphasize the cross-dependences between the deployment of the network elements and the macro parameters characterizing the topology of the venue. The existing proactive caching policies are designed by assuming that all users request contents with identical activity level at uniformly distributed or known locations, among which most of the policies are optimized by assuming that user preference is identical to content popularity. However, these assumptions are not true based on the recent data analysis. In this paper, we investigate what happens without these assumptions. To this end, we establish a framework to optimize caching policy for base stations exploiting heterogeneous user preference, activity level, and spatial locality. We derive success probability and average rate of each user as utility function, respectively, and obtain the optimal caching policy maximizing a weighted sum of average utility (reflecting network performance) and minimal utility of users (reflecting user fairness). To investigate the intertwined impact of individual user request behavior on caching, we provide an algorithm to synthesize user preference from given content popularity and activity level with controlled preference similarity and validate the algorithm with the real datasets. Analysis and simulation results show that exploiting individual user behavior can improve both network performance and user fairness, and the gain increases with the skewness of spatial locality, and the heterogeneity of user preference and activity level. Radar and wireless communication coexistence is considered in this paper as a possible solution to face the exploding demand and rising congestion in wireless networks. The transmission medium is modeled as an AWGN channel with additive radar interference. Standard constellations are not optimal in this context, and an auto-encoder (AE) is used to design proper constellations and corresponding receiver devices. AE is a powerful tool in neural networks that shares strong similarities with communication systems. This technique is particularly relevant in the lack of an analytical expression of the loss function. In the asymptotic region (high interference regime), the optimal constellation shape is known and the AE always converges toward this optimal solution. In the other regions, the AE is able to yield solutions that outperform the standard configurations. Several demapping alternatives are also considered leading to the conclusion that it is possible to maintain the communication link in the presence of radar interference independently of the interference power. This paper studies interference exploitation techniques for secure beamforming design in simultaneous wireless information and power transfer in multiple-input single-output systems. In particular, multiuser interference (MUI) and artificially generated noise (AN) signals are designed as constructive to the information receivers (IRs) yet kept disruptive to potential eavesdropping by the energy receivers. The objective is to improve the received signal-to-interference and noise ratio (SINR) at the IRs by exploiting the MUI and AN power in an attempt to minimize the total transmit power. We first propose second-order cone programming-based solutions for the perfect channel state information (CSI) case by defining strong upper and lower bounds on the energy harvesting (EH) constraints. We then provide semidefinite programming-based solutions for the problems. In addition, we also solve the worst case harvested energy maximization problem under the proposed bounds. Finally, robust beamforming approaches based on the above are derived for the case of imperfect CSI. Our results demonstrate that the proposed constructive interference precoding schemes yield huge saving in transmit power over conventional interference management schemes. Most importantly, they show that, while the statistical constraints of conventional approaches may lead to instantaneous SINR as well as EH outages, the instantaneous constraints of our approaches guarantee both constraints at every symbol period. This paper considers a wireless communication network consisting of multiple interfering multicast sessions. Different from a unicast system where each transmitter has only one receiver, in a multicast system, each transmitter has multiple receivers and broadcasts a common message to all of them. It is a well-known result for wireless unicast systems that the feasibility of a signal-to-interference-plus-noise power ratio (SINR) without power constraint is decided by the spectral radius of a nonnegative matrix. We generalize this result and obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for the feasibility of an SINR in a wireless multicast system with and without power constraint. The feasible SINR region and its geometric properties are studied. Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems operating within the millimeter wave frequency range offer exciting opportunities for the future fifth-generation (5G) wireless networks. While the increased bandwidth and spectral efficiency are attractive, transitioning to millimeter massive MIMO presents significant challenges with respect to blockages, high attenuation, and channel estimation errors. To address these challenges, this paper evaluates the outage performance of a millimeter wave cellular network using massive MIMO under a stochastic set-up subject to pilot contamination and matched-filter precoding. We model the cellular users and base stations with Poisson point processes. Furthermore, we consider blockages from random objects, and employ different path loss and fading models for the line-of-sight (LOS) and non-line-of-sight scenarios. Moreover, both fixed power transmissions and path loss inversion-based power control are considered along with the sectored antenna patterns. Using stochastic geometry, we derive the moment generating function of the interference experienced by a typical cellular user and its outage probability. It is observed that the environments with different path loss exponents have varying behaviour for similar blockage sizes and densities. In this paper, a fundamental study of energy efficiency (EE) optimization for coordinated multi-point (CoMP) simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) heterogeneous networks (HetNets) is provided. We aim to optimize the EE while satisfying certain quality-of-service requirements in regard to transmission rate and energy harvesting at both the macro cell and small cells. The corresponding joint beamforming and power allocation in the presence of intra- and inter-cell interference constitutes an EE maximization problem that is non-convex, and hence, very challenging to solve. In order to solve this problem, we propose to separate the beamforming design and power allocation processes. First, we adopt linear zero-forcing (ZF) beamforming to suppress the multi-user interference from both the energy harvesting users (EH-UEs) as well as the information decoding UEs (ID-UEs), thus transforming the HetNet under consideration to a virtual point-to-point system. An efficient power allocation algorithm is then developed to maximize the corresponding EE. On the other hand, the ZF strategy does not utilize the notion that interference benefits the EH-UEs. As a result, we propose a partial ZF approach by differentiating the EH-UEs and ID-UEs in order to further improve the EE. Channel asymmetry and channel correlation are frequently encountered in wireless communication systems. Orthogonal transmission schemes are usually inefficient in dealing with these problems. In this paper, in order to boost the throughput performance for multiple-input multiple-output broadcast communications in the presence of channel asymmetry and/or channel correlation, we study optimization algorithms for multi-user superposition coding beamforming (SCBF). Starting with solving the minimum power optimization problem for the two-user case, we derive the optimal solution structure of the problem and two types of dedicated algorithms that could efficiently find the optimal solutions with all parameter setups. Extensions are then made to the same problem with the signals of more than two users multiplexed in the power domain as well as to the rate region computation problem. Finally, to adapt our algorithms to more general cases, novel hybrid precoding schemes are proposed, where certain user grouping strategy is used to combine zero-forcing beamforming and SCBF. Numerical simulations are provided to show that with our algorithms, a considerable performance gain is achieved by SCBF compared to the other orthogonal transmission methods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, new enhanced cognitive radio networks (E-CRNs) based on spectrum sharing (SS) and spectrum aggregation (SA) are proposed for fifth generation (5G) wireless networks. The E-CRNs jointly exploit the licensed spectrum shared with the primary user (PU) networks and the unlicensed spectrum aggregated from the industrial, scientific, and medical bands. The PU networks include TV systems in TV white space and different incumbent systems in the long term evolution time division duplexing bands. The harmful interference from the E-CRNs to the PU networks are delicately controlled. Furthermore, the coexistence between the E-CRNs and other unlicensed systems, such as WiFi, is studied. The E-CRNs framework including dynamic spectrum management (DSM) is designed for the key parameters of licensed SS and unlicensed SA. The essential tradeoff between sharing efficiency and aggregation efficiency for the E-CRNs is discussed. Based on this tradeoff, a spectrum lean-management scheme is proposed to fulfill the DSM. Moreover, a water-filling algorithm is designed to dynamically access the available spectrum. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed E-CRNs can significantly improve the system performance in terms of data rate, outage probability, and spectrum efficiency. A base-station (BS) equipped with multiple antennas can use its spatial dimensions in three different ways: 1) to serve multiple users, thereby achieving a multiplexing gain; 2) to provide spatial diversity in order to improve user rates; and 3) to null interference in neighboring cells. This paper answers the following question: What is the optimal balance between these three competing benefits? We answer this question in the context of the downlink of a cellular network, where multi-antenna BSs serve multiple single-antenna users using zero-forcing beamforming with equal power assignment, while nulling interference at a subset of out-of-cell users. Any remaining spatial dimensions provide transmit diversity for the scheduled users. Utilizing tools from stochastic geometry, we show that, surprisingly, to maximize the per-BS ergodic sum rate, with an optimal allocation of spatial resources, interference nulling does not provide a tangible benefit. The strategy of avoiding inter-cell interference nulling, reserving some fraction of spatial resources for multiplexing, and using the rest to provide diversity, is already close-to-optimal in terms of the sum-rate. However, interference nulling does bring significant benefit to cell-edge users, particularly when adopting a range-adaptive nulling strategy where the size of the cooperating BS cluster is increased for cell-edge users.
